straight ahead. and a live look outside this morning. the golden gate bridge. it's monday, may the 25th. you're watching "today in the bay." >> from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> good monday morning. thank you very much for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> a magnitude 5.5 magnitude earthquake temporarily stopped the trains in tokyo. the good news so far no apparent damage or injuries. officials issued a tsunami warning and it was lifted within minutes. the international airport in the area shut down so that inspectors could look at the runways but then flights resumed after ten minutes. a live look right now at the san mateo bridge which is officially back opened to traffic. open for business. both directions right now.

the westbound lanes opened just minutes ago. the eastern span opened around 3:30 this morning. 90 minutes ahead of schedule. caltrans closed it over the weekend to resurface the pavement on the high rise portion of the bridge. before you fix a sandwich or pick one up at your sandwich shop, there's a major recall to hear about. >> hundreds of thousands of pounds of meat we're talking about. stephanie strong joins us live from san jose. a government food safety agency said the meat was not properly inspected. >> reporter: that's right. you're talk about 213,000 pounds of meat sold to countless people, mostly in california. and we're standing in front of the lee's sand witches corpor e corporate -- sandwiches corporate headquarters. they began back in 1980, they have a huge presence. look at the products that have been recalled. banh pork and chicken pates sold

and produced from may of last year to may of this year. a pretty long time. the u.s. department of agriculture said a surveillance review showed lee sandwiches selling chicken, beef and pork products that were not inspected but had the usda inspection approval stickers on them. check out other recalled items. the sliced oil turkey breast and sliced salami and beef jerky. these have different flavors. now the usda has three recall classification. this is the highest level. where there is reasonable probability that it will cause serious consequences or death. so far, they have not gotten any reports of illness, but it's a year we are talking about. this is just getting out to the public. there are 14 stores in the bay area alone, seven right here in san jose.

live in san jose, stephanie strong. >> well, as the summer season begins so does serious injuries. doctors at vanderbilt university hospital say memorial day is one of the busiest days of the year with victims of motorcycles, boating and swimming accidents. they say many of these traumas could be avoided if people would wear helmets, put on the seat belts an cut back on the alcohol. a fast-moving grass fire is out this morning but sparking new concerns this could be the start of an especially dangerous fire season. >> so incredibly dry today. we have details. >> reporter: good morning. if you're cooking outside, bear in mind perhaps the dusting off the grill for the first time, bear in mind this charred grass field bemind he here are the result of a -- behind me here are the result of a homeless person cooking. this fire began at 4:30 in the

afternoon and yesterday, wind up to 25 miles per hour whipped this into the much larger fire very quickly and threatened two mobile home parks nearby. the fire was put out without injuries or damage. capital expressway and the roads which were closed are now open. firefighters are advising all homeowners in the area to be advised. clear brush from away -- away from your homes and your roof. >> if you have a wood shake roof, clean it up. if you have any leaves, grass on it, take it off. clean your rain gutters. any stuff in this that can come bust, get it out. you can replace your roof, replace your roof. because if it's wood shingle it's going to go. >> just what we all need. more yard work to do on this memorial day weekend, but pretty good advice. firefighters say you should clear brush from around your

home from within 100 feet of your home. now, capital expressway provided a very nice and wide fire break, but a lot of homes in the bay area are not so advantageous. reporting live. outrage over a new law that bans nighttime marches. overnight dozens of activists defied that order. in total police cited 19 people and arrested four during demonstrations in the downtown area of oakland. right now you're looking at the video of a similar demonstration from saturday night. all coming in response to the new policy making it illegal to march after dark without a permit. she says the ban will cut down on vandalism and violence against oakland businesses. a religious symbol stolen for scrap metal maybe. investigators say that might be the reason why someone snatched the figure of jesus right off the cross. this happened some time before

the early morning mass wednesday at the church of the transfiguration. that cross is outside on the property and parishioners believe the bronze statue may have been taken to be sold as scrap metal. >> lots of people are scandalized at the thought of someone doing this. we'd like this back. >> it was there for about nine years and during the theft other statues and figures were left untouched. keeping track of the oil spill from southern california. it has been an uphill battle. clean-up efforts continue near santa barbara today. the company behind the crude oil spill says as much as 20% of the oil has been recovered. a ruptured pipeline responsible for spilling more than 100,000 gallons of oil on to the coastal bluffs and into the pacific ocean. an estimated 12,000 gallons made it directly into the pacific. local areas remain in a state of emergency.

our leaders need to grow a spine! >> dozens of folks in santa barbara county protested the oil spill there. about 60 people marched near that spill site. the group dressed in beach attire and gas masks are hoping to get the governor's attention. they want governor brown to ban extreme forms of oil extraction as well as fracking. seaworld giving out a helping hand, sending two animal workers to santa barbara to help wildlife impacted by the spill. meantime, seaworld employees are tirelessly working to save the animals already at their facility. >> so i'm getting emotional because i'm very proud of this team. the time, the effort and the energy. >> no doubt a lot of animals in need right now. all eyes are on the just rescued sea lions. they're weak and workers are keeping their distance until they're healthy enough to start

the oil removal process. a necropsy will be performed on the sick sea lion. he was rescued on tuesday and driven to seaworld on thursday. the animal arrived in critical condition. the they hydrated the sea lion and started to wash off the oil but it died on saturday. another dead whale washed up on the shore. this time, there's no plan to remove it. a decomposing juvenile gray whale washed up on sonoma coastline. this one at portuguese beach. this was taken by a ranger there. the press democrat reports they plan to let nature take its course and have the tide carry it back out to sea. it is the fourth whale to watch up over the last six weeks. you'll remember there was a sperm and a humpback whale that was washed up. they were buried. now not what you'd like to see on your memorial day. how about a spike in great white shark sightings off of the

southern california coast? from santa barbara all the way down to baja, mexico, more than a dozen great white sharks have been spotted in recent weeks. experts say don't worry about it, they're seeing juvenile sharks doing what they're supposed to do they're chasing sting rays and small fish which live closer to shore. and they are not experts say looking for people. >> mm-hmm. okay. i'll say -- >> separate question. >> meteorologist -- >> not too many people swimming i would imagine. at this part of california. >> even air temperatures out on the coast have been in the 50s. right around san francisco, you can see across the golden gate bridge, the high clouds are higher and away from the ground. and 3,000 feet up at the top as those low clouds have swept inland. 53 right now in san francisco. and about 57 degrees currently in san jose. so we have lots of low clouds inland out to the tri valley

this morning. then clearing as we head to the afternoon. but then that all day sea breeze will turn stronger after 3:00 this afternoon. that will help to keep our temperatures down into the 60s and low 70s later on. so 50s to start. and around lunch time you'll start to see the numbers creeping up to the 60s and then near 72 later on. san francisco, highs today only in the low 60s around the north bay. upper 60s out to santa rosa. oakland, 65 and if your memorial day plans include catching some baseball, temperatures in the mid 60s as that game goes on with mostly cloudy skies. a mist possible early as we head into the late morning and early afternoon before skies briefly clear. in san francisco and oakland, it's staying cool through wednesday. a more noticeable jump in temperatures for places like san

jose and tri valley. that's sneak preview where next weekend's forecast, which has been fairly cool, finally some 80s are popping up. back to you. >> thanks very much. holiday baseball action for you. turns out today is the busiest day of the year for one bay area holiday meal program. st. anthony's expects more people for today's memorial day meal than any other holiday and that includes thanksgiving and christmas. now, that's part in because the usual stand byes are closed. the director says many of those served are veterans. it all starts at 10:00 a.m. meantime, a somber memorial day service is planned for those who gave their lives. this will be in san jose and during that event, a wreath will be laid to honor san jose police officer michael johnson. he was shot and killed in the

line of duty back in march. separately another memorial day service is planned for fremont. community leaders are going to join the groups and that starts at 10:00 a.m. a free barbecue lunch will follow the service. tornadoes to flooding, deadly weather ripping apart the plains states. and there's more rain on the way, but there's a silver lining that could change the lives of people living in the plains for years to come. and it's almost a big win for a big company? >> yes. we'll take a look at that in business. ♪

you're watching "today in the bay." >> all right, no trading going on right now. not too much anyway. the markets are closed for the memorial day holiday. >> scott mcgrew says it's one more day -- >> yeah, specifically ahead in the interest rates is what they're going to wonder. janet yellen gave a speech on friday in which she said indeed rates would probably rise later this year. remember the rates that the fed controls are essentially at zero right now. also the fed is sitting on a fortune in assets. yellen did say she thought any of our problems with the economy earlier this year was probably because of poor weather and not because of anything fundamentally wrong with the american economy.

nice san jose company represented. thank you. new details on a deadly storm system that barrelled through texas and oklahoma yesterday. this morning we have learned that three people were killed in floods and tornadoes. one person died when heavy floods washed over san marcos, texas. at least eight people are still missing. in oklahoma two people die. one of the victims was a firefighter trying to save the lives of other people. claremore firefighter jason farley is being hailed a hero. s he helping -- he was helping people evacuate from their homes and then he got stuck into the storm drain. his department was reeling. >> it's hard to imagine jason is not here. >> jason farley was a veteran firefighter. he was just one month shy of 20 years on the job. oh, my god, stop stop stop. he needs to get out.

>> imagine seeing that during the middle of the extreme weather. look at that suv caught up in fast moving floodwaters. some good samaritans helped the driver inside escape just in time. because afterward that suv flipped over and then it started to drift out of sight. in houston an ef-1 tornado ripped the roof off an apartment complex. two people were taken to the hospital, then another twister was confirmed near dallas causing damage to traffic lights and garages. >> glanced down, the signs bent down to the ground like the incredible hulk came through. >> at least one with home was destroyed when the unconfirmed tornado touched down. fortunately, no one was home at the time. >> that funnel cloud will make your heart skip a beat, rob. you're talking about tornadoes and flooding, nightmare situations. >> and the pattern is resetting itself. we're watching a pattern moving

through west texas and for houston today, more severe weather. thunderstorm warnings and watches up. this is a memorial day forecast that will include severe thunderstorms and tornado producing storms from dallas into houston. as that upper level system tracks on through. some strong directional, winds at the surface. winds strongest from the west. up to des moines there and off to the west of st. louis, just west of chicago there's the risk of severe weather. a large corridor along the mississippi river valley. for us the complete opposite story. just about as calm as the weather pattern can get. low clouds. taking a marine layer which is very high this morning. so clearly it has no trouble crossing over the towers of the golden gate bridge. obviously over the hills of the east bay, as you get up to the higher peeks today, mount diablo or mount hamilton to the south you can look down on the low

clouds we have this morning. we'll break out of sunshine as we head to the afternoon. but the sea breeze will turn stronger so that ocean air conditioning continues. our temperatures will have a tough time climbing into the 60s. staying close to 60 right around san francisco. 70 in san jose. temperatures up in the north bay in the upper 60s to low 70s and close to 70 in livermore. back to you. now to the developing story out of the nation's capital. a man has been booked and charged with -- for driving without a license after a bomb squad found a pressure cooker in his car. israel shimeles was arrested around the time that they blew up the cooker. he left the cooker inside his car near the capitol building. an officer said he smelled gasoline coming from the car and then called for backup. early this morning officials said they didn't find anything else suspicious in the car.

paid the ultimate sacrifice. this afternoon at 3:00 p.m., the buses and light rail will stop service for one minute as part of the national moment of silence. all take time out of our day to recognize that. a massive search underway after a new orleans police officer is killed while sitting in his patrol car. the 45-year-old officer was patrolling a construction site just blocks from the superdome yesterday morning when he was shot and killed. so far no arrests have been made. the officer has not been identified yet. a nigerian man reportedly behind the drug ring in "the orange is the new black" will be in court today. u.s. officials say he was the king pin of a heroin trafficking ring back in the 1990s. it was the same trafficking ring that led to the arrest of piper kerman and then "orange is the new black" based on her experiences in prison. he was recently elected to the senate in nigeria.

impacting up to 55 stores in arizona, nevada, oregon, texas and mostly though here in california. take a look at some of the recalled products that may have sickened you and may still. the chicken pates sold from may of 2014 through may of this year. and the others are the turkey premium breast and sliced salami meat with wine. the smallest recall involves the beef jerky products. the u.s. department of agriculture says surveillance review revealed that they were selling chicken, beef, pork products that were not inspected but workers are labelling them as usda inspected. this is the highest risk level of recall for the usda where that's reasonable probability that the use will cause serious adverse health consequences or death. so far, neither the usda or lee's sandwiches has reported getting any reports of illnesses, but again this news

getting out to the public. live in san jose. >> a follow up, b.a.r.t. police are saying little about the pittsburg bay point station. someone stabbed a man at 4:30 in the afternoon. he managed to stumble to the information booth where he collapsed. his injuries are not considered life threatening. so far no update. and one outspoken critic has called the new body camera program all splash, no substance. one believes it will undermine transparency because of the policy that allows them to deactivate the cameras once they determine that taking video is unnecessary. cordell says that will likely render information from the body cameras newsless. as the summer starts so does

ridge mall. high winds whipped these flames 25 miles per hour into a much larger fire. it brought nearly 100 firefighters to the scene near capital expressway which were closed at the time but have reopened. two mobile home parks were threatened. one of them was threatened as well, but fortunately the fire was put out without injuries or damage. it has however served as a reminder to homeowners take care of your yard. >> if you have any growth within 100 feet of your house, take it down. if it's grass, stop, shrubbery, trees, trim them. keep them nice and tight so they don't create any hazard. if they catch on fire, your house is right next to go. >> reporter: fire investigators believe this fire in the foothills was probably started by a homeless person cooking on

a portable stove. bear that in mind if you fire up the grill for first time this memorial day weekend. i'm chuck coppola. the nation's largest supter market is taking -- supermarket is taking on the treatment of the factory farm animals. walmart is kcurbing the use of antibiotics and giving them enough room to roam around and open access to food and water. and they're also calling on them to stop mutilations such as tail docking. the move is going to be a game changer. >> walmart is such a power house within the food world. representing so much food production. food sales that any policy they have is de facto going to be the most significant policy. >> well, right now it's a request from walmart, not mandatory, but experts say the suppliers will likely comply.

miles per hour in the afternoon. that will prevent most of the valleys from warming much above the low 70s. by the afternoon, partly cloudy skies inland. continued cool and cloudy out near the coast and our temperatures warming slowly. still stuck with low clouds probably through 10:00 this morning. then around lunch time, break out to some mid 60s in livermore and san jose. san francisco highs still near 60 into the north bay, highs in the upper 60s. oakland about 65 degrees. the early start to the a's game hosting the detroit tigers in town. should see 60s. fifth inning temperatures in the mid 60s in oakland. the temperature trend as we move ahead will begin to warm things up. high pressure building back in. san jose climbing closer to 80, about the same out to livermore and for san francisco, finally going slightly above average. could jump to 67 degrees on

>> it is 5:41 right now and take a look at that. looking all normal along the san mateo bridge. one side opened. 90 minutes ahead of schedule. the other open not too long ago. things are looking peachy this morning. new this morning, five people are dead and more than 60 others hurt after a suicide truck bomb exploded in southern afghanistan overnight. that blast struck the gate of a local government compound in the early morning hours. three council members and several children were among the people hurt in the attack, but so far no group has claimed responsibility. today of course one for reflection and as america takes time to remember those who have given their lives u.s. and u.s. lawmakers grapple with isis. >> several are questioning the current strategy and "today in the bay's" tracie potts will explain. >> reporter: hi, good morning.

there are some here in washington who doesn't think the strategy is working. we have heard that the syrian air force launched 50 more air strikes but air strikes alone aren't doing it. as rolling thunder veterans mark another memorial day in the nation's capital, washington is debating how to defeat the islamic state. >> we need to have a strategy. there is no strategy. >> reporter: senator john mccain insists air strikes are not enough. we need boots on the ground. ashton carter disagrees. he says the problem is that iraqis don't want to fight. >> we can give them training. we can give them equipment. we obviously can't give them the will to fight. >> reporter: the iraqis have gained ground since isis took ramadi a week ago, but the islamic state in iraq and syria is now the size of a small european country. >> we are losing. there is no doubt about it. >> reporter: even democrats worry air strikes alone aren't working. >> clearly, isis has gained

spill now says as much as 20% of that oil has been recovered. ruptured pipeline to blame for spilling more than 100,000 gallons of oil into the ocean. an estimated 12,000 gallons made it into the pacific. local areas remain in a state of emergency. seaworld is giving a helping hand, sending two animal workers to help wildlife impacted by the massive oil spill there. meanwhile back in san diego, seaworld employees are tirelessly working to save the animals already at this facility. >> so i'm getting emotional because i'm very proud of this ti team. >> all eyes are on the rescued sea lions. workers keeping their distance until they're healthy enough to start the oil removal process. a case that's far from over -- gm may be facing criminal charges in the deaths of more than a hundred people.
