drivers get the green light to head back over the san mateo bridge. so far, so good. traffic looking clear across the bridges this morning but the skies clearly not. you have some low clouds, some mists to start off memorial day. a look at your forecast and some warmer changes ahead. >> from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> good morning. thanks for joining us on this memorial day. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm sam brock. we'll kick off the holiday with a live look at san francisco and san jose this morning. you see on the left side of the screen there, plenty of clouds out there to start your day, but hopefully not to finish your day. >> let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda. >> the plans look pretty good in terms of outdoor plans.

break out the sunshine and with the low clouds and sea breeze, temperatures will be fairly cool. san jose, you have overcast skies for now. eventually breaking out to some sunshine as we head into the afternoon. but today's weather will include lots of low clouds. and some drizzle at times. you have been seeing that around oakland and san francisco for the morning and then the skies clear as we head to the afternoon. but if your memorial day plans include a trip towards the sierras look out for the risk of thunderstorms around lake tahoe, over to reno. thunderstorms are a possibility in the forecast for today. so hour by hour, if your memorial day -- for your memorial day forecast, 50s and then as we approach the lunch time, around mid 60s. morgan hill closer to 71 degrees. staying cool in the 60s in san francisco and oakland. later this week, 70s and 80s pack in the forecast. for your personalized forecast, you don't have to wait until the middle of the night to ask. just download our app.

track temperatures, any rain right to your doorstep. as early as rob gets up, i have a feeling he'd respond to you at 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning. caltrans reopened lanes in both direction. they hit the marker when they said they'd get the bridge back open. eastbound opened at 3:30 and westbound at 5:30. this marked the second time in the month that the bridge shut down for a weekend closure. well, a heads up before you make sandwiches for the trip to the beach today or the picnic. that's a major meat recall you'll want to know about. >> with a store that has plenty of locations. steph chuang is joining us this morning. this affects more than 200,000 pounds of made from a popular sandwich shop. >> reporter: it is, sam and we're talking about 14 stores with seven of them here in san jose alone. in fact, we started in the city in the '80s and we find the

corporate headquarters here. take a look at the pukts in the biggest part of the recall. we're talking about the pork pate produced from last year to this year. the surveillance review revealed that lee's sandwiches was selling chicken, beef and pork products that were not inspected but were mislabeled as usda inspected and approved. now, other recalled items are the sliced oil brown turkey breast and sliced salami meat. the smallest part of the recall -- sold in different flavors from fruit to barbecue to curry. there are three recall classifications and this is the highest level and and there's reasonable product that it will cause health consequences or deaths. early it's --

>> all right. that's steph chuang. that is steph chuang reporting from san jose. we have more information about that recall of the 210,000 pounds of meat related to lee's sandwich. found that on our website. we'll be posting that shortly. now to developing news out of the nation's capital. a man was booked and charged for driving without a license after a bomb squad found a pressure cooker in his found. israel shimeles was arrested around the time that they blew up that cooker. an officer said he smelled gasoline coming from the car. and that's when he called for backup. early this morning, officials said they didn't find anything else suspicious in the car. it's unclear if shimeles will face additional charges. a 5.5 earthquake rattling tokyo this morning.

the good news, so far no apparent injures are from the quake. they lifted the sug warning within -- tsunami warning within minutes. an airport shut down but resumed after ten minutes. the oil laden sea lion pup is waiting for help. you can see oil on his back fin. a person visiting the beach did call officials but reportedly took them several hours to get to that sea lion pup. fish and wildlife officials say they're backlogged with marine mammals in need of help. they're trying to get to them as soon as possible. over the weekend we learned that a sea lion also sickened in last weekend's oil spill died at seaworld in san diego. a necropsy will be perform to determine the cause of the death. the crews have recovered about

20% of the crude oil that seened into the ocean. still it could take some time to figure out what caused that pipeline to break. it's been a tough stretch for marine wildlife in general. another dead whale washing up on the coastlines. this time, that's no plan to remove it. a decomposing juvenile gray whale washed up on portuguese beach. the press democrat reporting they plan to let nature take its course and have the tide carry the whale back out to sea. this marks the fourth time, the fourth whale to wash up on bay area beaches just over the last six weeks. a sperm and hump back washed up also. flames like these could be a sign of what's to come throughout california, especially here in the bay area. it was a long and busy and dangerous fire season. overnight, firefighters kept an eye out for hot spots in san

jose. >> chuck coppola joins us live. a lot of people are cooking today and firefighters say they need everyone's help and cooperation. because all it could take is an errant match. >> reporter: absolutely. good morning. i have a couple of items for your to do list. clear brush within 100 feet of your home and dry leaves from your roof. anything that could ignite if emberss fly through the area. if threatened whispering -- it threatened whispering winds mobile home park, but it was put out without injuries or damage. that's an example of hitting this fire with a lot of personnel, hard and early, because that rainy season we were supposed to have, that didn't happen. >> we have had such a dry season

that that's stuff that's always dry. so any little ember, anything that lands on in. cigaret cigarette butte, it could be anything will get it going. >> reporter: fire investigators believe this fire may have been accidentally started by a homeless person cooking on perhaps a portable stove outside. and this forced the closure of two roads which have since reopened. an important caution there. we'll check out your microclimate forecast and a look at the hills. plenty of brown on the stills. very dry conditions. >> scary thing, so many people are on the roadways and sometimes it takes pulling over to get that cat alittic converter on the dry grass. >> we saw something on 580 and then a few spot fires near the roadway. as we get into may and june

where we haven't seen three years of drought, this typically is the time of the year where the hillsides turn brown. things dry out. you can see our temperatures this morning, mild, it's cool. we have some moisture in the air. 56 degrees. once the winds pick up that's when we see the fire danger kind of increase. right now, not too bad outside. you have drizzle and mist around the bay. these are the wind speeds we're watching. yes, the temperatures are cool, but as the winds pick up that's when we see the fire danger increase. we're in a cool pattern. low to mid 50s out there and when the winds come in off the ocean like that, it will keep the temperatures down and it will bring in low clouds well above the top of the golden gate bridge. you see the base of the clouds close to 1,000 feet and going up over the hill tops, about 3,000 feet thick. that's the reason that the low clouds are out to the pass and

the delta to start the day. those on shore winds keep things fairly cool. about five to ten degrees below where they should be. upper 50s to low 60s near san francisco. oakland, 65 degrees where you've got the a's game coming up. mostly cloudy skies. a bit of a mist approaching lunch time and mid 60s around the fifth inning and then cooling as the game wraps up. temperatures will dry to warm up a little bit around the bayside. from san francisco to oakland, mild through about wednesday. then perhaps a little bit above average with upper 60s there. san jose is finally breaking out of the cool may pattern. closing in on 80. and then things will turn warmer and drier in livermore. as you can see now, you'll have the breezy conditions and temperatures climbing into the

we have heard of people stealing copper wiring, but a religious symbol was maybe stolen for scrap metal. that's why someone may have smashed the figure of jesus at an east bay church. this happened in the early morning mass wednesday at the church of the transfiguration. that cross sits outside on the property and parishioners believe the bronze statue of jesus may have been taken as scrap metal. >> scandalized at the idea of somebody doing something like this. but we would love to have it

back -- the figure of christ back. >> the figure of jesus was at that church for nine years and during the theft other statues and figures on the property were not touched. 6:14. new details outrage on the streets of oakland over a new law that bans nighttime marches. dozens of activists defied that order. in total, police cited 19 people and arrested four in downtown oakland. you're looking at video of a similar demonstration on saturday night which comes in response to mayor shaft's policy making it illegal to march after dark without a permit. she says it will cut down on violence against the businesses. well, the markets are closed in honor of the memorial day holiday. >> and the investors are thinking of the future. >> and what's ahead for the interest rates. janet yellen gave a speech on friday in which she said she would indeed probably raise

rates this year. her and the open markets committee. remember, the rates that the fed controls are essentially at zero. the fed has been sitting on a fortune in assets as well. it will want to start selling those. she thought any of the problems with the economy earlier this year was probably because of poor weather. i mean, this was boston and it was an absolute disaster earlier this year. she says this was probably what affected our economy. not something fundamentally wrong. wrong with the economy. u.k. prime minister cameron says voters will be able to decide if the united kingdom stays in the european union by the end of 2017. election will be open to 18 and up. scotland allows voters as young as 16. britain is part of the e.u., but does not use the euro. a good showing in the indianapolis 500.

you're watching "today in the bay." >> 6:24 right now. looking live from our camera in san francisco. very nice way to start the day. hopefully you don't have to go to work this morning. living at high altitude may be a risk factor for babies sudden infant death syndrome in particular. researchers at the university of colorado looked at the birth and death records and they found the death record was twice as likely to those living at high at today. more studies are needed. many u.s. hospitals have abandoned an old practice of sending new moms home with formula freebies. in 2007, more than 72% of hospitals distributed infant formula packs. while in 2013 that number

usda says that southern california based lee's sandwiches marked products as federally inspected when they were not. investigators in washington, d.c. found nothing else suspicious after plowing up a car. the man in the car has been charged with driving without a license for now. we stay now in the nation's capital as america takes time to remember those who have given their lives to protect our freedom. the u.s. and u.s. lawmakers grappled with the challenge of defeating isis. some u.s. politicians are questioning the current policy. tracie potts is joining us in washington, d.c. mainly, whether that's working. >> reporter: questioning if there's a strategy. what we have been doing so far, our air strikes with the coalition we saw more from syria just today, 15 air strikes this morning. against the islamic state. but some here argue that air strikes alone are not enough. as rolling thunder veterans mark another memorial day in the

iraqi government to fully incorporate the sunnis, to peel them away from isis. >> reporter: complex politics in the middle of a war zone. now keep in mind when the islamic state takes over the cities they're not just taking over the oil fields, the gas fields and the government. they are going in and some cases destroying a lot of the history of that entire region and killing people just in the last week and a half over 200 people in syria and that included a number of children. >> all right. thank you. certainly that motivates the conversation. developing story this morning, the governor of texas will get a firsthand look at the devastation in wimberley hard hit over the weekend. at least 400 homes are destroyed an several people are missing this morning. the worst may be yet to come as more heavy rain is expected today. so far, tornadoes and flooding are blamed for the deaths of at least three people.

one person in texas and two people in oklahoma. one of the victims in oklahoma, a firefighter who died trying to save the lives of other people. claremore firefighter jason farley is being hailed a hero this morning. he was helping people evacuate from their flooded homes when the current became too strong. he have sucked into the storm drain and his department right now is reeling. >> it's hard to imagine jason is not here. >> understand the emotion there. jason farley was a veteran firefighter and he was just one month away of 20 years on the job. oh, my god! stop stop stop. he needs to get out. >> you can't help but feel the panic that person was screaming about. heart stopping video out of boerne, texas.

break out of the clouds. i notice from half moon bay over, you have the low clouds. by 7:00 we'll see the low clouds return. so it's from about noon to 5:00 we'll break out clear and then as the sea breeze turns stronger, that will pump the low clouds on in. 20 miles per hour, that will keep things feeling cool outside around the tri valley and the south bay for today. close to 70 in san jose. mid 60s around the peninsula and upper 50s to near 60 in san francisco. out to the north bay, around 60s around petaluma and 65 in oakland. the a's are taking on the tigers today. numbers in the mid 60s with misty skies early on in the afternoon. those winds 10 to 15 miles per hour later on. notice the temperature trend ahead for san francisco. mild through the middle part of the week. a jump come friday. san jose you will see temperatures soaring closer to

memorial day. here at home, the valley transportation agency will briefly suspend service in honor of our nation's veterans. this afternoon at 3:00 the buses and light rail will stop service for one minute as part of the national moment of silence. believe it or not, it's been a month since that earthquake struck nepal and survivors are still living in fear. that killed more than 8,500 people and left many of the country's cultural sites in ruins. the situation worsened after another 7.3 magnitude struck weeks later. hundreds are still living in open fields saying they're too afraid to return home. as police officers find themselves targets of violence this morning, a massive search but no suspects after a new orleans police officer was killed while sitting in his patrol car. he was patrolling a construction site blocks away from the superdome yesterday morning when

he was shot and killed. the officer has not been identified. a fly jeer man man behind the drug ring that became famous in the orange is new black is fighting extra -- extradition to the united states. he was a kingpin in the 1990s and the same trafficking ring that led to the arrest of piper kerman and then "orange is the new black." that alleged kingpin was recently elected to the senate in nigeria and is set to be sworn in on friday. but u.s. officials hope to have him stateside by then. a grisly discovery in new york but investigators said there's nothing to be worried about. authorities say they found nine brains along the street in new york. while they don't know how the brains ended up there they say they belonged to either dogs or sheep and were likely part of a collection for educational or research purposes. nothing criminal is suspected and a local vet says that at

that fire began at 4:30 in the afternoon and at this hour winds were gusting up to 25 mile per hour and it threatened two mobile home parks. fortunately the fire was put out without injuries or damage. capital expressway and quimby road were close for a while, but they have reopened. firefighters are now advising all homeowners to be aware that embers can fly in the air. so clear the dry brush from your roof. >> if you have a wood shake roof, clean it up. clean your rain gutters. if there's any stuff that can come bust get it out. i mean, you can replace your roof. replace the roof. because that's -- if it's wood shingles it's going to go.

specifically it's 213,000 pounds of recalled meat and to 55 stores in arizona, oregon, oklahoma, but mostly here in california. these are some of the recalled products. bahn, and the chicken pate sold through may 18 of last year and through may 18 of this year. the smallest recall is beef jerky sold in different flavors. the u.s. department of agriculture said its surveillance review revealed they were selling the chicken, beef and pork products that were not inspected, workers were mislabelling them as usda inspected. it's the highest risk level of recall for the usda, and there's a reasonable probability will cause serious adverse health consequences or death. it is early, also a holiday.

gasoline coming from the car and then called for backup. early this morning, they didn't find anything else suspicious in the car and it's unclear if he will face additional charges. the oil covered sea lion pup is waiting for help. you can see oil on the back fin. a person visiting that beach called the officials but it reportedly took them several hours to get there. fish and wildlife officials say they're backlogged with marine mammals in need of help. they're trying to get to them as soon as possible. meantime, over the weekend we learned that the sea lion also sickened in the oil spill died at seaworld in san diego. a necropsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death but it had oil covering most of its body on thursday. the company behind the spill saying that crews have recovered around 20% of the crude oil that seen seeped into the ocean. another dead whale washed up on a bay area beach. this time reportedly no plans to

remove it. a decomposing juvenile gray whale washed up on the sonoma coast. that's on portuguese beach. these were taken by a ranger there. the press democrat reports that the plan is to let nature take its course and let the tide carry it out to sea. this is the fourth whale to wash up over the last six weeks. there was that sperm whale and the humpback whale. and stay out of the water, that's the warning after toxic algae blooms were found in a popular park. swimming at the quarry lakes in fremont is banned until at least wednesday. that's putting a damper on memorial day festivities. biologists say the blue green aa algae can lead to skin rashes. they believe it's caused by on going drought. the rest of the park is open.

outrage on the streets in oakland after a new law bans nighttime marches. dozens defied that order. in total, police cited 19 people and arrested four others during demonstration in the downtown area. this is the video from the similar demonstration on saturday night. this comes in response to mayor shaft's new policy making it illegal to march after dark without a permit. it should cut down on vandalism and violence against businesses. one is calling the san jose's police department new body camera program all flash and not substance. the auditor the new cameras being tested out. she believes it will undermine transparency. that's mostly due to the policy that allows officers to deactivate cameras once they have determined that taking the video is unnecessary. she said it will likely render information from the body cameras useless. a religious symbol stolen allegedly for scrap metal that
