the water rising so fast there drivers simply got out and abandoned at least 2500 cars. >> let's get to nbc's janet samlian. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. no relief. we're under a flash flood warning with lightning, thunder and rain falling. it comes as the flood waters are receding leaving a muddy mess and showing families the extent of their losses. even in a region used to flooding, this is unprecedented. streets turn to lakes. freeways into parking lots full of abandoned cars and trucks. america's fourth largest city brought to a soggy standstill. >> you see the homes, the lives and dreams of houstonians crushed by the power of the water. >> reporter: almost a foot of rain fell in sus six hours tuesday, leaving at least five dead in houston. this morning thousands are still assessing the damage.

>> lost both cars, we lost all of our flooring, all of our walls. >> reporter: further north devastation. two dead and 13 missing in a small town of wimberley, where the blanco river burst its banks late sunday, sweeping away everything in its path. laura mccomb and her children, 6-year-old andrew and 4-year-old lateen, had traveled from corpus christi for the memorial day weekend. as the house they were staying in was ripped from its foundation, laura called her sister julie. >> the house we were in, the roof collapsed, and we are now floating down the river. call mom and dad, i love you, and pray. >> reporter: all three are now missing. in devine, texas, mourners gathered at a prayer service for alyssa ramirez, a high school homecoming queen killed driving home from her prom. now even in some areas dry out, officials caution the danger is not over.

>> we're going to continue to have rising waters. if your local elected officials tell you to evacuate it is essential that you heed those warnings. >> reporter: houston trying to pick up the pieces today, but with weather like this, that is proving to be a challenge. savannah, back to you. >> thank you very much. let's bring in michael walter, the public information officer for emergency management. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. >> these images we're seeing are alarming, the governor toured the area and said you cannot candy coat it. what's the state of the city right now? >> right now we still have a lot of our neighborhoods under water. the systems of bayous are doing a good job draining but at a certain point you have this amount of rain in such a short amount of time, it's going to take us a while to fully drain the city. once we start seeing the water

levels recede, that's when really a lot of the hard work is going to start. >> let me talk about numbers. 19 confirmed dead. we have 14 listed missing. 11 in hayes county. three in houston. are those the latest and what's being done to locate those people? >> yeah, so those are the latest numbers right now for the city of houston we still have a few folks that are unaccounted for. we have had five weather associated fatalities here in the city of houston. you know, we are working our search and rescue teams are out there, at the last known place. unfortunately, with -- when people fall into the water it's very difficult for us to know exactly where they went at that point. >> you talk about moving through the cities, the streets of houston. at the height of the flooding people abandoned something like 2,500 cars on major roadways and secondary roadways. that makes it very difficult to move around.

and it also raises the question, michael, was enough done in terms of warning people and telling them to stay off the roads? >> you know, one of the things we run into every time we have any kind of severe weather here is keeping people off the roads. houston is the bayou city for a reason. we are a system of bayous and the area drains here through the houston area to get into the gulf of mexico. so, whenever we have rain, we run into this situation. you know, ahead of the storm, the city was talking with the local media, we were pushing out emergency alerts through the emergency notification system. we were on social media and our main message was turn around don't drown. stay out of these roadways. you know, and unfortunately, some people -- fortunately some did heed that, and then others did not and unfortunately some of those folks you know, ended up losing their lives as a result of that. so you know, when you hear an emergency manager tell you that condition is unsafe, we don't take that lightly.

that's the type of information we were pushing out ahead of this storm and then as we were responding to the immediate aftermath. >> i know there is more rain in the forecast. we hope people heed those warnings. thanks for joining us this morning. i know you have a busy day ahead. >> thank you. let's turn to al for the forecast. looking at the same map for days and days, this pattern is relentless. >> it's going to last into the weekend, unfortunately. let's show you what we've got. to show you that right now there is more rain as janet talked about, we have a flash flood warning in effect for houston. look at this line, this wall of water that is heading toward houston. and will be there in the next 10 to 15 minutes as we track this. again, with the risk of severe weather today, stretching from waco all the way to garden city, 8 million at risk, 2 inch hail, isolated tornados. at one point the blanco river over the weekend was going at

233 cubic feet per second. that's 144 million gallons per day. how much rain is that? well, if you were to put it in olympic pool, it would fill up 218 olympic size swimming pools. the city of houston, the last 24 hour, got 6 inches of rain, 11 inches of rain in 6 hours, and that led to 500 water rescues. there is more rain coming. if there is any silver lining in this, it is the elimination of drought. look at what we had for texas and oklahoma on april 7. by yesterday, last week, you can see it is almost all gone. we'll get another update on this coming up later on tomorrow with the drought, we expect to see no drought in texas. the bad news is we cannot turn off the spigot. >> thank you very much. another major story breaking this morning. fifa international, soccer's governing body in a corruption scandal involving tournaments in

the u.s. and the world cup. this all stems from a u.s. investigation that has uncovered millions in alleged bribes and kickbacks. nbc's bill neely has more on this. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. it is known as the beautiful game but today soccer is reeling from a scandal the fbi says spans generations and involves corruption totaling $150 million. the u.s. attorney general saying enough is enough of fifa, the organization that runs the world's most popular sport. it wasn't the wake-up call they expected. a hotel sheet is used to hide the arrests of some of soccer's top officials. six men were taken from the exclusive swiss hotel where they were preparing to elect the leader of the world's richest sporting organization. among them a vice president who runs the u.s. region. fifa runs global soccer. the u.s. indictment charges the

men with racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies, in a 24-year scheme to enrich themselves. involving $150 million in bribes and kickbacks. fifa generates billions mostly from world cup. these charges were linked to smaller tournaments, fifa today portraying itself as the victim. >> fifa suffering under the circumstances. >> qatar. >> reporter: fifa's announcement that qatar, a tiny but rich desert kingdom, had been chosen to host a world cup isn't part of the u.s. indictment but swiss officials said today they are investigating that. and the decision to give russia the world cup in three years. >> complete nightmare for fifa. the worst thing that could have happened to them. >> the u.s. attorney general had supervised the u.s. investigation as attorney in brooklyn. these charges are a bombshell for the world's most popular

sport. it's not just the fbi, the swiss are now investigating, the giving of the world cup to qatar. the u.s. equivalent maybe like giving the world series to martha's vineyard, highly unusual. questioned for years. soccer is under a legal spotlight as never before. >> bill neely, thank you so much. >> no offense to the people of martha's vineyard. >> like good idea. here is a headline that popped off the page. the irs having to reach out to nearly 100,000 people because their personal tax information was stolen by sophisticated hackers. >> officials say it was part of a scheme to claim fraudulent refunds, the entry point for the hackers an online service provided by the irs called gettranscript where you can download your past filings. that site has now been temporarily shut down. natalie is here now with new threats against passenger planes, this time out west. >> right. it's happening again, the fbi investigating another bomb

threat made against a passenger plane in the latest in a series of threats made against flights headed to the u.s. from foreign airports. this time, though, it involved a plane from taiwan bound for los angeles. tom costello is in our washington bureau, tom, what can you tell us? >> reporter: this was flight 12 taipei to los angeles, while in flight somebody called in a bomb threat. the plane landed safely. it was met by airport police t fbi and the lapd bomb squad. all of the passengers and baggage were removed and screened. nothing found. also on tuesday we're told another threat was called in against a cafe pacific flight, that plane also checked. these are just the latest in a series of threats made against aircraft headed for the u.s., on monday at least half a dozen other threats were made by phone to international flights at airports in new york, new jersey, and massachusetts. in one case, u.s. military jets escorted an air france flight into new york after somebody

claimed a chemical weapon was on board the aircraft. nothing found. the fbi investigating all of these cases. >> tom costello, thanks so much. critical testimony tuesday in the colorado shooting trial. the notebook belonging to james holmes that he mailed to his psychiatrist the day of the shootings was read to the jury. the 29-page notebook was the subject of a long court battle over whether the jury should even see it. it detailed holmes' fascination with death and his options for how to kill as many people as possible. holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. new york rangers staved off elimination tuesday night with a big win over the lightning in game six of the eastern conference finals. new york scored five times in the third period alone to leave no doubt, winning it 7-3. what's that you hear? that's matt lauer screaming. yes. the seventh game friday night. game six of the western conference finals between anaheim and chicago is tonight

on the nbc sports networks. and as we showed you at the top of the show, a fish tale like you have never seen before. two friends who happen to be out shooting video for an online fishing show called chew on this, this is down in florida between sanibel and ft. myers. they wanted to see if they could reel in a grouper from a kayak. he didjust that. >> there he is. yeah, baby! that's a big boy. >> to say the least. it certainly is a big boy. so big his rod actually snapped while trying to pull it in. it weighed in at 552 pounds, a record catch from a kayak, mind you. you have to get in the water to hold that one. the pair led to the shore, measured the grouper, then released it back in the water. the overall record by the way, 680 pounds. matt, you still question whether or not it's real? >> no, it kind of looked like a confined area. then getting in the water with it. >> by the way, what do you use

is still here exactly two weeks to the day after police say that terrifying ordeal began in this mansion. this in many ways remains an unsolved mystery. it one suspect is behind bars, police believe there may have been more than one involved. we're hearing from the murder suspect's former attorney speaking out on behalf of the family in his defense. >> he is not capable of such crimes. horrific crime, killing four innocent people. >> attorney robin thicker who represented daron wint in previous cases a decade ago not currently representing him insist d.c. police have the wrong man, telling nbc news he has been in touch with wint's mother, brother and sister who he says are all standing by wint. >> they can't believe it's him because they know him as a kind, gentle person. >> court records show wint has a criminal history dating back a decade with three separate and unrelated protective orders

issued good against him. though only one case resulted in an assault conviction. for the crust found at the house that investigators say matches his dna in a data base, wint's family insists that is impossible. >> one reason they believe he's innocent is that he doesn't eat pizza. he doesn't like pizza. they volunteered that to me. >> reporter: about the $40,000 in cash that was also delivered to the house. court papers allege that an assistant who worked for mr. savopoulos lied to investigators about when and how he brought the money to the house. that assistant has not been charged. meanwhile, with the funeral service for the three set for early next week, their loved ones and friends remember the savopouloses as a family that maintained a close bond for each other and those less fortunate and recalling phillip, nicknamed flip, as a talented fun loving 10-year-old, mature far beyond his years who aspired to be a

it looks like everything is finally cleared up. but it's a slow drive. the rest of the northbound routes continue to build subtly. and the san mateo bridge i want to point out another crash, reports of at least one slowing blocking the northbound side through san mateo. approaches the bay bridge a much smoother drive, and some crashes over in novato causing some extra slowing out of narrows back to you we'll be back in about half an hour. have a great morning.

alleged corruption and bribes dating back decades. and if you use the irs's system called get transcripts. you could be the victim of data hacking. hackers used it to steal and then file fake tax returns. the irs is reaching out to anyone impacted by that breach. meantime, we have something you've got to see coming up. tomorrow and friday on "today," we're going on the search of great white sharks. a lot of us have been tracking mary lee and kathryn who was tagged swimming in the atlantic. they've got an extensive twitter follower. >> i've got a grouper that could take them on. >> we'll have kerry sanders diving in live to try to get face-to-face with some of these fascinating and yet fear-inducing creatures. something to look forward to. we begin this half hour, though, with more on the widespread flooding in texas. in many cases, the water rose so fast people didn't have time to get out of the way.

what would you do? would you know what to do? "today" correspondent jeff rossen has more. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: hey, matt. good morning to you. we've all been -- [ inaudible ] water rescues happening in oklahoma and texas. have survived the rising floodwaters that can be so dangerous. what it's like for the water rescues themselves that are also so dangerous. we're here on this raging river here in north carolina. this is where rescue workers come, one of the locations to train for rising flood rescues. this is the real deal, by the way. i am literally hanging onto this branch or else i'll go away. it is dangerous. grab this. certified rescue group. thank you for being here. you do these types of things. you're an instructor. you see a lot of people drowning in cars sadly. what do you do?

if you come to the water, you think you can make it through, how do you decide whether to go or not at standing water? >> first of all, you do not drive through the water. turn around, do not drown. too many people are killed every year in their vehicles. >> reporter: you were telling me it only takes 4 inches of water. >> 4 inches of water to float a vehicle away. >> reporter: what happens if you do go in, water starts coming up. do you stay in or get out of it? >> it's a big mistake to stay with the car. however, if the vehicle starts to move you get out so you do not drown. inside the vehicle. >> reporter: all right. my first instinct right now would be to put my feet down. thank you very much. this is tough. put my feet down and try to get to land. >> that's the worst thing you can do. and the reason for that is your feet can become trapped in a rock or debris or anything. and the force of the water will pull you under and drown you. there's nothing you can do to fight that. >> reporter: my next instinct

would be to swim across here. where our camera is right now. >> you can't do that. it's just too strong a current in this environment to swim. you can't swim in a traditional manner across that. >> you get tired. >> you'll wear yourself out. >> reporter: what do i do in open water like this? >> the only thing you can do is defensive swim position. lay on your back with your feet downhill like i mentioned earlier. you do not want your feet down to get trapped under anything. >> like in a pool in my backyard. lay on my back. in backstroke position. position your body which way you want to go. >> reporter: go with the flow. >> yes. you want to try it? >> reporter: yeah. we'll try it. i should tell you guys we've got rescuers down here. let go? let go. >> yeah. >> angle yourself down.

>> reporter: all right. this is how dangerous even these rescues are. incredibly dangerous. thank you so much, guys. thank you to duke energy and to the men and women who do this all the time. i can't hear you because we've lost communication, but i hope this helps. especially to all the people in oklahoma and texas dealing with this right now and it can happen anywhere. >> jeff, thank you. most importantly the tips of what not do. >> exactly. >> your instinct is probably wrong at that moment. >> absolutely. >> you're not only risking your lives but the lives of those to rescue you. >> more than 500 water rescues. >> in just one overnight period. really tough stuff. we've got some more severe weather to talk about. in fact, look at what happened. this is chicago. this just goes to show you you don't need to have a tornado to cause major problems. these were straight line winds, a microburst. winds of 50 to 60 miles per hour

just outside chicago ripping off roofs, causing big problems. car damage, roof damage, siding, windows, a real mess. now let's go to southwestern ohio. beaver creek, ohio, just outside of dayton. they had a tornado, a slight tornado, an ef-0. you're looking at it right now on a security camera. and it did major damage in the town causing flipped cars, damaging roofs, big problems. again, don't have to have a severe tornado to cause big problems. we'll have more areas today under this same dangerous weather. we're looking from chicago, green bay, up into upstate new york. we have the risk of severe weather today from ohio all the way to interior parts of new england. 51 million people at risk. we could see some severe hail, damaging wind gusts. we're going to continue to track this during the day. and it is our driest month in the northeast in may. concord, new hampshire, may break a record. only .1 inch of rain for may.

give extra. get extra. all right. 7:42. we're back on a wednesday morning with our special series "the hacking of america." most of us have heard the warnings about cyber criminals. >> that's right. but there's actually a new identity theft and fraud victim in this country every two seconds. and even if you think you're a savvy consumer, you can still be targeted. nbc's tom costello is going to tell us how. hey, tom, good morning again. >> reporter: hi, guys. good morning. chances are you've received an e-mail that looks suspicious trying to get you to type in your credit card or bank information. it's actually a lot easier than that to steal from you. how many times a week do you swipe your credit card?

from the grocery store to the gas station, the coffee shop to the dry cleaner. we all do and we all have a target on our backs. in florida, heather hadley thought she was safe using her credit card at the gas pump. she had no way of knowing that thieves had attached a credit card swipe reader to the pump. >> there were many charges made. 11, 12 different charges made on my credit card that were not authorized by me. it made me feel very uncomfortable. >> reporter: the tool crooks use is called a skimmer. some can be hidden in the small of a hand or connected to an atm. we're talking about a typical credit card. james lyon showed us how it's done. the equipment he's using he bought for just a few hundred dollars on amazon. >> just swipe your credit card through here once. immediately, what we see on the screen is a copy of the cord number on the front there. so what we can actually do is

write this onto a blank new one. >> reporter: you're stealing the data from this one and putting it right onto a blank card? >> that's right. so i no longer need that. >> reporter: it doesn't have to be a blank hotel key card. even better, a used credit card that doesn't arouse suspicions. and it's big business. once thieves have copied the card, they can use this to buy merchandise or they can sell it to websites that deal in stolen cards. police in romania recently broke up an international criminal gang who'd been dealing in cloned cards targeting u.s. banks and netting more than $15 million. and americans are more at risk because many of us don't have credit cards found in europe that use an encrypted chip and require a pin code. in the states we're not using the chip and pin technology yet, but that's the next step. >> right, that's correct. >> reporter: but, of course thieves don't actually have to touch your credit card to steal from you. they just need you to give card details over the internet.

looks legit. i've typed in my information. >> reporter: and as soon as you've typed that in on the screen here, i can see the little security code capture response and i can see your credit card data. so now i'm in possession of that. >> you've got this now. >> yeah absolutely. in realtime. >> reporter: and don't put too much luck in that padlock. that only means your information is encrypted on the way who wofr receives it. in this case a cyber crook. now, the credit card company did not make heather hadley pay for those charges on her card. but you know what? the same thing just happened to me last week. i got a call from my bank that my credit card had been used in indiana even though i was in washington and the credit card was in my wallet. security pros say if you receive any e-mails suggesting your credit card or bank account has been compromised, don't click on any link. instead, call your bank directly. guys, back to you. >> thank you so much tom. has it happened to you guys? i had a fraud alert when i was

a very good morning. it is 7:56. i'm laura garcia-cannon. pilots on a southwest flights from san jose to san diego were forced to make an emergency landing late last night out of lax, after a heat sensor debited smoke in the cargo hold. all 77 passengers on board were evacuated. nothing was found. firefighters now believe it may have been a faulty warning light for the first time in drug companies will have to pay for collecting and disposing of unused drugs. that's because yesterday the u.s. supreme court refused to hear an appeal of the historic 2012 law that requires drug makers to pay about half a million a year for proper disposal of unused drugs. alameda county supervisor nate miley authored the bill. he tells "the oakland tribune" that other cities may soon adopt other laws a little overcast skies, rob. >> still a bit of drizzle around

host the world cup in 2018 and 2022. researchers in britain are suggesting a link between new oral contraceptive pills and higher risk of blood clot. a study found women taking an older type of contraceptive pill had a two and a half times greater risk of is developing a blood clot. but women had a four times greater risk with some. the difference is in the type of hormones in the pill. the lead researchers said women should not stop using the contraceptive but consult their doctors if they're concerned. how cool is this? a canadian inventor has set a record for longest ride on a hover board. he rigged up a platform that resembled a giant drone. then as you see he glides 900 feet across the surface of a lake in quebec. that's longer than any previous hover board flight. pretty cool.

it's 8:05 right now. over to savannah. now to the growing scandal surrounding the duggar family. their reality show "19 kids & counting" is losing more sponsors. and now comments from jim bob duggar's past are causing problems. >> the words came from a campaign website for jim bob's 2002 u.s. senate bid. comments being viewed in a new light given his son's molestation scandal. while questions over the show and the family's future remain unanswered. after josh duggar apologized for acting inexcusably following the publication of a police report claiming he fondled five underage girls in 2002 and 2003 the parents posted a statement on facebook. that dark and difficult time caused us to seek god like never before they wrote, reflecting on the allegation. now a week after the scandal

broke, a 2002 campaign website is drawing attention to jim bob's comments on rape and incest. rape and incest are crimes that should be capital crimes. as the scandal shows no sign of going away quietly. headlining the cover of the latest issue of "people" magazine. >> how are you? >> good. >> reporter: on tuesday tlc dropped the duggars from an upcoming appearance at a network block party scheduled for saturday and more longtime sponsors pulled their ad dollars. payless shoe stores and general mills cutting ties with "19 kids & counting." >> these are family advertisers. they do not want to be attached to such a terrible scandal. >> reporter: tlc and its parent have dealt with scandal before. canceling "here comes honey boo boo" after pictures of the

matriarch surfaced with someone who reportedly molested her daughter. forcing two of them off the air. >> television casting directors, they're looking for larger than life personalities. if it's something with child molestation, there's no way that can be spun into a positive. >> reporter: controversy is familiar territory for reality tv. phil robertson of a&e's "duck dynasty" was placed on indefinite hiatus before being reinstated to the show nine days later. bravo's real housewife theresa giudice and her husband were sentenced to prison time. but those issues are understandably different. >> this scandal will have an impact on the whole reality television landscape when it comes to casting.

passengers. but the hungry fliers shared photos of this surprise delivery all over social media. >> what kind of tip did the delivery guy get? everybody give a dollar. who ordered pepperoni? >> all right. is it fair? this morning "the wall street journal" profiles that companies bar job applicants from haggling over pay. if you're a new hire you can't negotiate your starting salary. take it or leave it. the policy promotes transparency which obviously it does. and also fairness. since studies show that women don't usually negotiate as hard as men. what do you think about that? >> i think it's very interesting. at first i didn't like it because i thought you should be able to negotiate your salary but i do like the transparency aspect of it. this is what it pays. you want the job or not? >> seems to work for car companies. dealerships. >> but you think it's stereotypical to say women don't negotiate as hard as men do?

more than 2,000 of them. numbers have dwindled since then, but some here feel it's still a problem. one that's inspiring some creative solutions. this is the new sound track here. a sea lion symphony. >> i think it's gorgeous. i think it's beautiful. >> reporter: but to some they've become unwanted beach bums. >> i constantly get phone calls and e-mails, please can you do something about the sea lions. >> reporter: the port of historia says they are competing with commercial fishermen. the answer may come from a stranger who's trying to orca-strate a plan. the fake orca he hauls through parades to promote his whale watching business in washington state. >> the whale is the natural predator to a sea lion, i thought it would be funny to

take the whale down there and see if they move. >> reporter: but before he tows it five hours, his orca needs a tune-up. dave brown is even equipping it to make killer whale sounds. >> those sea lions might just wave at us and not pay any attention. but then again, it might scare them out of there. >> reporter: but experts say the sea lions just might be too smart. >> they figure out things quickly. they think the big issue is food is a big motivator for these animals. >> reporter: astoria's latest idea is lining the docks with beach balls which seem to scare the sea lions at least for now. affordable solution, right? >> affordable. and it's festive. it does look kind of nice out there. >> reporter: on this dock where you see all the sea lions right now, there's no beach balls there. so if the beach ball solution doesn't work, no worries. that giant orca will be driving

there was a scene where we were playing beach football. you know we thought it would make sense to play tackle football which at the end of the day, you know hindsight wasn't the greatest idea. you know jerry and i were sort of roughhousing. jerry tried to tackle me. we were in the sand but you just heard that weird -- >> pop? >> -- kind of almost like splitting chopsticks. i know that sounds terrible. it's like -- it's just like a weird kind of a split noise. >> how long did that lay you up? >> i got up because my adrenaline picked up. i was a little embarrassed, first of all. all these real tough athletes are standing there. i just popped up like i was going to try to walk it off. i ducked behind a bush and cried for two hours. >> kevin came out. >> i was weeping. you know i was so embarrassed. i kind of played through it for a few days. and then i mean i worked for three days with a broken leg. finally i said guys i've got to go to the hospital. this is not a sprain. my leg is folded back the other direction. i'm pretty sure it's broken. >> i want to ask you -- first of

all, i'm happy you're okay. i want to ask you about something you put up on facebook. during high school your yearbook photo, had you labeled as most likely to be famous. >> right. >> what were you like as a young man that led your buddies to believe you were going to be the one who was going to be famous? >> well you know listen. it was a nice thing for my classmates to vote me. but at that point, i had already done a bunch of acting. to me i always took it it was more a vote of confidence from my classmates to kind of keep going. because i had been you know going -- you know, moving towards that goal. so it was really them. they knew that i was moving out to california. so it was really -- i always took it as a vote of confidence to say, listen we believe in you. go out get out there. >> did you stay in touch with them? >> of course, all the time. >> they must be so proud of you. >> it's always nice to see the guys. >> it's always good to see you. we've been waiting for the movie for a long time. we're happy it's finally here. >> it is here. >> can't wait. thank you very much. >> thank you very much. >> tomorrow we're going to catch up with vinny chase himself. and we've got jeremy piven later

theft and securities fraud. gilroy police say she promised to wire money to mexico only to pocket most of it. more than a dozen people are each dlooefdbelieved to have been bill bibliinged out of $10,000.

dead, 14 still missing. in texas alone, 46 countries have issued disaster declaration. in the city of houston, 2500 cars were abandoned. people just up and walked away from their vehicles because they had to and there's a bunch more severe weather on the way. we've heard these terrible stories of people being swept away in their cars in their homes. just their bodies themselves. we actually had our buddy jeff rossen do a live demo for us. he was down in morganton, north carolina on how to survive dangerous flooding situations. >> he was in the water with a rescue swimmer and eventually he gets in with him and lets him go to see what it's like. watch this. >> yeah.

>> one of the rescuers in the boat falls into the water. and they did get jeff back in. jeff said he was petrified. . he thought they were going to miss him. >> explain what he was teaching just regarding the angle of your body. >> you don't want your head first. because if you hit things, that's going to be a traumatic head injury. so you want to kind of feet first get yourself feet first and so you can kind of keep yourself upright. >> and go with the water. and don't try to stand up. because then your feet will get swept out from under you. >> and the problem is people don't realize the power of water. i mean, about four to six inches of water moving at about four miles per hour takes you down. one to two feet of water will float a car. and four to six feet of water moving about four miles per hour will basically move a house off its foundation.

unfortunately the nine people in that house that went down the blanco river and then smashed into a bridge and we lost them, it's horrible. speaking of the blanco river, it was at one point moveing so fast 223 cubic feet per second. that's 144 million gallons a day. if you took that amount of water, that would fill 218 olympic-sized swimming pools a day. houston, america's fourth largest city, they got so much rain. they got 11 inches of rain in six hours. they just got another inch of rain in the last hour. they're now about -- they had 500 water rescues in that six-hour period. they now are only about an inch away from having their wettest year ever. >> all in the last week and a half. >> it's crazy. and this is going to as we'll see in a little bit is going to keep reloading and they're going to get more.

they've got more weather today and get a bit of a break now. and more coming before the end of the week. >> and it's interesting. we had a couple of the city officials we've seen go through that area. hurricane ike and other disasters. and they say that this is something again like they've never seen before. we instantly know the danger and the force of a hurricane, but back to the original conversation of the velocity of the flooding and how fast there are a couple of people reportedly who were frozen in fear in their vehicles as the water rushed around them and just the speed of it all is stunning. >> and the personal stories. the heart breaking phone calls. saying pray for them because they know they're being swept away. >> the homecoming queen on her way back from prom. >> our thoughts and prayers with the people in texas and oklahoma still as this continues on. i know you're going to be busy all week long tracking these other storms that are coming their way as well. switching gears on a much lighter note who do you think is the best celebrity pitchman

lake charles all the way up to alexandria. we've got a risk of strong storms today. dangerous lightning, supercells. tornadoes can't be ruled out. 8 million people at risk. hail at about solis. so we're going to watch this very carefully. the one good thing that's come out of this, take a look at the lessening of the drought. from april to last week almost nothing. and i guarantee you we get the drought monitor update tomorrow, it will probably be just about gone. ironically, we've got drought here in the northeast in new england. we have some folk who is are way below normal for the month of high above the santa clara valley been watching the low clouds break up. now breaking out the sunshine in san jose. 58 degrees and the same temperature but very different looking sky around san francisco. misty skies there. low clouds and temperatures not moving much today around san francisco. close to 60 there. low 70s in the south bay. mid 70s towards the tri-valley.

taking a look at the headlines. america's waistline is getting bigger. according to researchers from healthways. the national obesity rate rose last year. in southern and mid-western states more than a third of the population was obese. increased use of alcohol among the elderly may lead to heart disease. a study at harvard medical school and brigham and women's hospital found the more people drink the more thickening of the heart muscle. the study reinforces u.s. recommendations that people who drink should do it in moderation. no more than a drink a day for women. no more than two drinks a day for men. researchers in britain are suggesting a link between newer

oral contraceptive pills and a higher risk for blood clots. a study found women taking an older type of contraceptive pill had a two and a half times greater risk of serious blood clots. but women taking the newer type had a four times greater risk. the difference is in the type of the hormones used in the pills. lead researcher said women should not stop using their contraceptive but should consult their doctor if they are concerned. a study in europe suggests that more dietary fiber may reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes. researchers looked at data from almost 30,000 people and found those with the higher fiber intake had an 18% lower risk of diabetes than those who took in the least fiber a day. more than 360 million people worldwide are affected by diabetes. and that number is expected to grow to more than 550 million in the next 15 years. taco bell and pizza hut are

been a faulty warning light. first time anywhere drug companies will have to pay for collecting and disposing of unused drugs in almeado county. yesterday the u.s. supreme court refused to hear an appeal of the historic 2012 law requiring drug makers to pay about half a million dollars a year for proper disposal of unused drugs. the author tells the oakland tribune other cities may adopt similar laws. clouds are starting to break up around some of the inland valleys. a slight warm upinland. not much change around the coast. highs in the low 70s. mid to upper 70s around saratoga and los gatos near the afternoon. up towards the north bay and tri-valley, mid 70s in the forecast today. oakland 65. and we'll get to the temperatures right around the midpoint of the a's game which comes up just after noon today. temperatures in the 60s with
