"today in the bay" is live to explain the controversy. >> reporter: this group of protesters will caravan from san francisco later this morning to peninsula to facebook headquarters here to protest the social media giant's policy of requiring people to register with their legal names whenever they want to set up an account. now, this has been a problem for people like drag queens who go by stage names, along with native americans and victims of domestic violence who choose and want to remain anonymous. facebook says that's the whole point of requiring people to

submit their real names. it makes the users more accountable and makes it more difficult for them to harass, commit fraud or post hate speech. this policy has been the subject debate between facebook and protesters for several months. both sides have met on more than one occasion. facebook did apologize at one point for closing the accounts of those who had been using pseudonyms and the company tweaked its policy, allowing people to use a fake name as long as they use a picture i.d. or birth certificate to verify their true adeidentity. this satisfied some protesters but not all. the protesters say it still makes them a target of discrimination and bullying. that protest scheduled at 11:00 this morning. >> thanks, bob. two years after a san jose teacher was convicted of molesting students, his former school district goes on trial for turning a blind eye.
