6:00 am
i'll talk more about that in the microclimate forecast. we are watching from the drizzle, the slicker roadways around the bay. point that out, as well as the crash we're tracking for the closure in fremont. good monday morning to you that thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm sack brock. later today, a protest in front of facebook headquarters. hundreds are upset about the use of fake names. >> bob is live in menlo park. the protesters say the policies can make them targets of violence or worse. >> reporter: they want to keep their anonymity. there will be protesters caravanning down from san francisco, down the peninsula to facebook headquarters here in menlo park. they're expected to arrive around 11:00 to protest the social media giant's policy
6:01 am
requiring people to register their legal name whenever they set up an account. now, this has been a problem for people like drag queens who want to go by their stage names, along with native americans and victims of domestic violence who want to remain anonymoanonymous. facebook says that's the point of requiring the legal names, it names users accountable and makes it different to commit fraud, harass or commit hate speech. both sides have met on more than one occasion. facebook did apologize at one point for closing the accounts of those who used pseudonyms. the company seemed to tweak its policy and allows people to use a fake name as long as they use a picture i.d. or birth certificate to verify their identi identity. this satisfied some protest, but not all of them. the people expected to protest this morning says the rule makes them a target of discrimination and bullying. they're expected to protest here
6:02 am
outside facebook headquarters around 11:00 this morning. reporting live here in menlo park. bob for "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. happening today, the state department is trying to come up with a plan to rescue several americans being held against their will in yemen right now. the four u.s. citizens were taken prisoner and held in the capital city to have sanaa. the "washington post" reports that attempts to rescue those americans have failed so far. they are being held by the houthi rebel group. at home, a 4-year-old girl recovering from a head injury after falling from a second story window. firefighters say the girl was conscious and alert when they arrived at the apartment complex. just off of highway 4 in concord. she fell at least ten feet. she was rushed to children's hospital in oakland and her condition now is not known. >> it's a common theme this time of year when we leave the windows open. we are waiting to learn the names of the man and woman arrested after a tense yard to
6:03 am
yard search in the south bay. our cameras were there at the moment police officers handcu handcuffed the woman. the man was found hiding in a backyard near tully road and mclaughlin drive last night. the two tried to run over a police officers with their car and later rammed a patrol car with their car and took off. no officers were hurt. >> good news. a new class of drugs could be a game changer for treating terminal cancer. an international trial suggesting taking the two drugs at the same time can shrink tumors in 60% of patients. in some cases the tumors went away altogether, leaving some patients considered terminally i'll effective liquey lly cured. they destroyed deadly tumors. researchers say these show promise, especially in the might against melanoma and lung cancer. >> that would be a good thing. the fight over soda is
6:04 am
bubbling up. lawmakers in san francisco are going to talk about new proposals aimed at curbing the amount of sugary drinks we consume. stephanie chuang is live in our newsroom. the voters were asked to ban the drinks and it didn't work. what will happen this time? >> what's different is last year, it was a soda tax initiative that needed voter approval. this time it's not necessary. supervisors can pass it as part of an ordinance. makers of sugary drinks could be required to label their ads can warnings about obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. these warnings would have to take up 20% of the ad space. that is the same standard applied by the fda to tobacco warnings. this would apply to ads on sports sen views and billboards. a second idea would ban sugary drink adds on public property,
6:05 am
including busses and shelters. the last would ban the city and county of san francisco from spending money on sugary drinks altogether. the state beverage industry group says the leaders are demonizing the soda industry. milk-based products like lattes would be exempt from the labels despite containing as much sugar and calories as sodas. if the proposals pass, they'll go into effect in an ordinance 30 days after the mayor signs, or the supervisors can override if the mayor vetoes with 8 of 11 votes. it seems it's a bit of a local trend. it was one week ago that ucsf said it would phase out sugary drinks from its campuses, clinics and hospitals. that is set to begin july 1st. live in our san francisco newsroom, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." another reason to watch the speeds around the city streets. san francisco could have more cameras to catch speeders.
6:06 am
the tcity looking at testing th cameras near schools and senior centers. >> some drivers feel they're being watched too much but others still the measure could save lives. >> speeding is the number one killer on san francisco streets. this excessive speeding has no place in our vibrant and growing city. camera enforcement is a great tool. >> supporters say that cities like new york have had great success with this kind of program. if you are in the south bay today, you may see some smoke hovering in the sky. firefighters say no need to worry or call 911 either. it's all on purpose. cal fire is doing its first of three burns in joseph grant park. there will be similar burns on wednesday and friday as well. time to check your microclimate forecast at 6:06.

a live look at the rain drops out there on the golden gate bridge. at least on the cameras. >> you say the bridge is out there. we have to trust you because we can't see it. meteorologist kari hall is here with a look at the forecast. in the a drought-busting amount of rain but we'll take it. >> indeed we'll take it. through the day, there will be clearing, a little rain in the forecast. later on this week, i'll talk about that. right now, it is 57 degrees on the south bay. partly cloudy skies. you can see the rain drops in san francisco. maybe even a couple of light showers later on this morning. for san francisco and the north bay with highs reaching 60 degrees this afternoon. san francisco, east bay, 76 degrees. also 76 degrees for the tri-valley, with mostly sunny skies. looking good for the start of the week. it does improve, as far as the chance of rain heading to the end of the week. it's been all clear this morning. no rain just yet.
6:08 am
it may not stay that way. there's a little bit of moisture streaming on shore. later on this morning, there could be some rain mainly for the north bay. san francisco, slight chance of shower. not a lot of rain there. any rain drops falling from the clouds will be a bit of help. into the rest of the week, here we are on saturday. the possibility of rain moving in with the remnants of a tropical system that will most likely bring some showers for southern california. will it make it here to the bay area? that will be the big question. something we'll be watching over the next few days. the microclimate forecast brings it up to 73 degrees today in los gatos. slight chance of shower. 63 degrees. for san francisco, the marina, 59 degrees. the forecast for north bay, 68 degrees for santa rosa and oaklaoa

oakland reaching 62 degrees. the tri-valley, it'll be a nice weekend. considering there will be a few showers possible. the temperatures trending a little cooler, especially for the east bay and san francisco. the peninsula reaching into the mid 70s. overall, more of this comfortable weather in the forecast. now, let's get a look at what's happening with sam and kris -- or mike. sorry. >> kari, i'm going to interrupt that dance. i want to talk about what you're talking about here. same thing i tell my kids. looks like a shower but it's not. your hair is dry. we'll look at this. the lens is a little wet but the rest of the air is all right. there's moisture in the air like kari is talking about. mist and drizzle. the showers are coming through the area, but not just yet for the golden gate bridge. that's the worst we see on the camera lenses. we'll show you the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on. we get one to two drops on the lens from time to time. condensation from the mist and the low clouds.
6:10 am
the drive is all right. we see a smooth flow of traffic. light for this time on a monday. the upper east shore out of hercules and highway 4 is where we see slowing. the berkeley area moves nicely. now the build for 580 off of 24. we have a smooth drive. the accident in the middle of your screen is on mission bouleva boulevard. around the sullivan underpass. if you don't know where it is, you probably don't use that portion of mission boulevard. for those of you that pass the niles boulevard, that's where it is. a car went into the road. we don't know the extent of the injuries. the investigation is happening now. you can use niles boulevard as an alternate through the area, a surface street to the south. >> something to track. impressive explanation there. >> thank you. >> bill nye the science guy has to watch out. the time is 6:10. a deadly crash caught on camera

a horrific sight in the sky over italy. two acrobatic planes collided before the start of a local air show, killing one pilot and injuring the other. there you see it.
6:14 am
horrifying to see. all of it caught on camera. the two planes appear to be flying one on top of the other, as they cruise over the beach. the video then shows one plane dropping down and colliding with the second one. both planes broke up and fell into the sea, and the cause is being investigated. this morning, an unscheduled stop for a state of the art airplane making a vjoy voyage. it started a trip around the world without using fuel. the pilots made an unscheduled landing in japan due to weather. they have the riskiest part of the journey to hawaii. that leg is expected to take several days. the senate failed to extend provisions of the patriot act. >> what does this mean for privacy and national security? >> sam, this is the debate, between security and privacy. the senate last night, not able
6:15 am
to pass the extension of something called section 215. a piece of the patriot act that expired at midnight last night. the patriot act itself did not expire. 215 did. there are three provisions under section 215. the one you're most likely familiar with is the bulk collection of phone records by the nsa. senators argued over that with rand paul saying it was a violation of our freedoms as americans. he was able to stand in the way of the adoption of the usa freedom act. this bill would have updated the existing patriot act, extending section 215, but change the way the phone records were collected. instead of the government tracking your phone calls, the phone company would keep those records. the government could then go to the phone company and ask them for it. by not passing this, nobody is collecting bulk phone records. in some people's minds, that's fine. the entire idea of bulk
6:16 am
collection of phone records is controversial. some courts say it's constitutionally questionable. nobody doubts we should track individual terrorists, but it's the bulk in bulk collection of phone records that is the big controversy. as for the political side of this, this was a big blow for senate majority leader mitch mcconnell. he should never have let lawmakers go home on vacation for the memorial daybreak. he is the senior senator from kentucky. standing in his way is rand paul, the other senator from kentucky. we should point out paul is running for president. in fact, kris and sam, mcconnell endorsed rand paul. they know each other well, but they're far apart on this issue. >> not nearly as close as you have them on the screen right now. >> much farther apart. >> different hallways. some are still worried about flooding in much of the state,

seeing sunshine today for the first time in weeks. a series of deadly storms are blamed for the death of at least 31 people in texas and in oklahoma. ten people are missing. the focus shifts to assessing the damage. in houston alone, early estimates top $45 million. not far from houston, look at this. a group of cowboys working together. they are far from the ranch though. to save several hundred cows from flood waters. they are bundled in the rising waters. ranchers were able to get half of the herd over to dry land. >> that is good news in texas. we are looking live at san jose. i live in san jose. my kids wanted to go to the swimming pool yesterday, and i said, but it's winter. let's give you a live look outside. we'll check in with meteorologist kari hall. at least in the morning hours, i said, no way am i sitting pool side. >> i don't think so. it's been really chilly. it's been good to not have to turn on the ac. i know people are wanting some warmer weather. it takes a while before it gets

happening out there in the pacific, with hurricane andres. category four hurricane won't stay that way, as it moves off to the west and then tucurbing around as we see the storm track changing. it may be enough to bring in moisture for southern california. we'll be watching this to see if it will bring us some beneficial rain in time for saturday. moving farther to the north on sunday with a few of the showers moving through the microclimate forecast today, morgan hill reaching 72 degrees with partly cloudy skies. the peninsula, redwood city, 60 degrees. san francisco for the marina, 59 degrees. the rest of the microclimate forecast, we see a slight chance of rain for santa rosa. 68 degrees. fremont, 70 degrees. for the tri-valley, dublin today, 72 degrees. if you're looking for a place to take a dip in the pool, even going into the weekend, stays cool, except for the tri-valley.
