sunshine and there is rain if the forecast. details on that coming up. >> with all that going on we'll see how it will affecter your drive. we'll talk the about the south bay coming up. >> what about the city by the bay? a live look outside . nice look at san francisco bay bridge. it's tuesday, june 2. it is "today in the bay." >> announcer: from nbc bay area this is "today in the bay." >> a good tuesday morning to you pt thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia cannon. >> i'm sam brock. breaking news. a home worth millions in the south bay is no more. flames ripped through it overnight. everyone made it out okay. >> that's good news. chris sanchez live fear los gatos. people fds the home. we understand they heard pop ing noises as the flames broke out. >> one resident said there is an art studio on the second floor of the home and that's what woke her up -- the sound of spray

paint cans popping. if we could zoom in you will see half of the second story is collapsed down on the first. we were talking to a firefighter. he said he thinks it is a total loss. the fire came in about 2:30 this morning. ironically, fire crews were just down the road at the scene of the crash. they were using jaws of life to extricate somebody from the crash are vehicle. they drove by the scene and didn't see flames. that's how fast it was. within ten minutes the second story was engulfed in flames. firefighters could do nothing but take a defensive position. the good news is the folks inside, someone did wake up and roused everybody else from sleep. >> i walk around the back. i see smoke off the roof. i ended up seeing smoke coming out of a window. i knew the house was on fire. so i ran back in, woke everybody

up, got everybody out. >> reporter: that's the good news. everybody made it out safely. we understand there might be a cat missing. the residence are dents standing by to wait until this concludes and if the cat comes back. the red cross is on the way to assist them. they are going to need help because the house appears to be a toy tall loss. 3,000 square feet of old construction, wood siding. something that burns fast. firefighters say again the response was very fast. but the fire was just faster. near los gatos, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> we'll join kris again in a half hour. in the meantime we'll continue to cover the story across all of our digital platforms. get the latest on the nbc bay area.com on our free nbc bay area app. >> we have another developing story this morning in livermore

where federal investigators will get a look at a deadly small plane crash. >> live near the crash scene in livermore. bob, i don't learned something new about the pilot spmt. >> we spoke with the medical examiner's office. they have a tentative i.d. on the man behind the controls of the sing engine piper cub. they tell us he's not from livermore but from the bay area. in other words, he is local. he had just taken off from livermore municipal airport. it was around 9:00 when he radioed the control tower with what sounded at the time like just a minor emergency. here is a partial audio clip from the website live atc.net. >> i have a slight control problem. i'm going to circle and check it out and head back to the pattern. >> unfortunately after that conversation his plane crashed in a wide open field about three

miles north of the airport, not far from north livermore and hartford. you can soo this the photos taken by the residents the crash started a small brush fire the fire department was able to put out. fortunately the area where the plane crashed is remote, open space. a good mile or two away from homes. the pilot died at the scene and was the only person on board. they do have a tentative i.d. but they are not releasing it yet. the damage to the aircraft was so bad they were not able to decipher a tail number. with the tentative i.d., i'm sure they can find the identity of the aircraft. the aircraft was a piperer p.a. 22, similar to the one in this photo. it's a small engine aircraft. the kind you see taking off from airports like if liver it is more. the ntsb now takes over the investigation. they are expected to be here later and hope for a preliminary

report within the next couple of weeks. reporting live in livermore, bob riddell, "today in the bay." >> now to a dram technical end to a police chase in san francisco. cell phone video captured the intense moments. police can be seen climbing over anden on top of cars to arrest the suspect after he crashed into other vehicles. this happened last night next to the westfield shopping center. a witness described the scene for us. >> we were trying to pull over to the side. multiple police cars coming in this direction. there was a gigantic crash. within seconds, a police officer was on top of the gold car, beating on the window with a stick. >> police say the chase began the view district where are patrol agents spotted a man known to be armed and dangerous. he reportedly bolted this a car before hitting a house and patrol agent.

a driver was rushed to the hospital and should be okay. >> the man charged with murder for the death of a 9-year-old boy in the east bay is expected in court today. william schultz admitted to stabbing 3rd grader jordan aldgren in april. schultz said he did it because he just wanted to know what it was like to take someone's life. >> a woman accused of attacking a young child inside a walmart store in san jose is expected to enter a plea today. prosecutors say par i can't garate attacked a 4-year-old girl and her father with a wrench. she faces charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. she targeted the victims because they were asian. >> oakland city leaders could use millions to boost fire safety in the oakland hills. >> it is fuelling a debate whether it's safe or necessary.

now more on the vote and controversy. >> reporter: the decision should come tonight on whether to thin the trees. supporters say it could save lives and homes. opponents think it's too drastic. you may remember the fire storm in 1991 that killed 25 people, destroyed more than 3,000 homes. the first would include nonnative spe is sis like eucalyptus. >> we intend to take out specific sized trees within this location. again we are only taking out what's necessary to improve the safety for our community. >> more than 50 acres and 60 along the ridge line above the

tunnel. the fire department would cut it down for september and october of next year. that would include using herbicides and some say it could contaminate ground water. they are worried about mud slides so they have filed a lawsuit against the si city to prevent the project if it is approved tonight. coming up in the next report hear from a survivor back in 1991. that's in 30 minutes. >> in the meantime, firefighters will spend the next couple of days. by law homes and business owners must clear away dead brush. if they don't fix the problem. >> you will pay for it if there is a fear and the home is affected. get ahead of the curve on that one. it's a little bit of a cooler

sanchez reports a fire in the beautiful home that's been taken out. highway 9 for the morning commute. we have a traffic control. sounds leek everything west of santa cruz. should get you back around the yamplt they hope to have one direction open. kris is on scene and will give us updates. we'll zoom to the east bay. a crash going on here. westbound 580. your chute. a big rig on the shoulder. one vehicle has to be moved to the roadway. you will see it slowing here. we'll jump over to the bay bridge. we have no problem. and look at the beautiful view. i talk about this. back to you. >> i'm talking about a woman who worked as a nazi concentration camp as a guard before immigr e immigrating to california. officials say she got money from the u.s. government as late as this year.

20 million dollar this is social security benefits from are the u.s. government. alfredi rinkel worked at a concentration camp this the world war 2 before moving to california to marry a german born jewish man whose parents were killed in the holocaust. for some reason she kept getting social security benefits from the u.s. until january of this year when the no security security for nazis act kicked in. the associated press looked for her in germany but couldn't finder. she would be 92. before leaving the united states she said she never told her husband she worked as a concentration camp guard. >> there is a big shake up at the tsa after an embarrassing report. testing showeded tsa screeners missed weapons and fake explosives exactly 95% of the time. a test case where alarms sounded prompting a pat down but the

officer failed to find a fake plastic bomb taped to an under cover agent's back. the report doesn't name specific airports. the secretary reassigned the head of the tsa and told them to change security procedures and retrain officers. today member members of congress dig deeperer into one of the biggest product recalls. takat a executives and the head of the national highway traffic safety administration are ex expected to testify. ellen powell headed back to court. >> the fees aren't cheap. it's going to cost her a lot of money. >> it is. close to a million dollars. you will recall powell lost her civil lawsuit with the jury clearing the venture capita firm on all counts so powell who brought the suit has to pay legal fees. cliner would wave the fee ifs powell didn't 'peel. powell fileden an intention to appeal with the superior court

looking out there in the pacific, hurricane andres is still developing and moving off toward the west. it will make more of a turn to the east. now a category two hurricane and making a curve closer to land. so something we'll be watching. not only that. we have tropical storm blanca that may make a direct hit to cabo. if you have friends there planning a vacation, you want to keep an eye on that storm the. we are, too. it may bring in showers and storms for the weekend. keep it tuned here. we'll keep you updated. the three day outlook 71 degrees. temperatures going up as we get closer to the weekend and even for the shore we are seeing high this is the 70s. still fairly comfortable all across the bay. i will have another look at the micro climate forecast. now we'll check in with mike. >> we had a crash at the dublin

at 5:25 developing overnights are rescue crews pulled 14 people off a capsized boat off the coast of china. the passenger ship was carrying more than 450 people when it capsized. five people are con if i wered dead. the team used ham ers to tap on the boat after they heard screams coming from the ship 12 hours after it went down. the captain said the ship sank quickly after being caught in a cyclone. new this morning, russian arms maker con if i wered one of the missiles was used to shut down flight 17 last year. it's an older version of the missile no longer used. flight 17 was shot down last supper. there's been controversy over

who is responsible for the attack because of the fighting between russian-backed rebels and the ukrainian government. the maker of the missile says russian doesn't use it anymore. it is part of the arsenal. they stopped short of blaming ukrai ukraine's military for the attack. >> a settlement between the a malaysian government and the family of one of the sims on woerd the missing malaysia airline flight. this marks the first legal case against malaysia air license and the government. two boys whose father was on the flight filed the lawsuit. they wanted to accept compensation to move forward with life. we could learn more about a deadly train derailment in philadelphia. a committee will pusher for answers in a hearing on the tragedy. the train wrecked goinger more than 100 miles per hour sending all seven cars off the tracks.

you can see mist in the air. tuesday, june 2. you shall watching "today in the bay." >> good tuesday morning. thanks for joining us. >> now to breaking news. a home worth millions in the south bay. no more. everyone made it out okay. >> kris sanchez joining us live this morning. people inside the home reported hearing popping noises as the flames were breaking out. >>. >> they awoke to hearing popping sounds that turned out to be spray paint cans in the art studio up on the second floor. you can see behind me the house is 'peers to be a total loss. i'm no expert. there is not much left. the fire burned on the second story of the home. it was fully engulfed and much of the second store is down on the ground level. firefighters pulling down some of the roofing as we speak.

the fire was reported around 2:30 this morning. the fire response was fast because this home isn't far from the fire station down the road. a fire crew was just down the street trying to -- working on a rescue. they had to use jaws of life to get a woman out of the wreckage of the car down the street. one of the firefighters said as they drove past on the way to the scene, there was nothing -- they saw no flames. within ten minutes the second story was engulfed. by the time they got the hoses out they had to take a defensive position. the good news is everyone inside made it out thanks to one young woman. >> i walked around, saw spoke coming off the roof. i saw smoke coming out of a window. i knew the house was on fear. so i ran back in, woke everybody up and got everybody out. >> everyone did make it out

okay. firefighters were able to take a defensive position. there is a lot of smoke in the distance. pg & e was out here on the scene. a fire burned down one of the power lines. it was across the i roadway. see it there in the distance. firefighters were able to move it. it will be a wild before pg & e re stores power. there doesn't appear to be much there. you may be wonder iing how thiss impacting traffic. they call it the enjoins have been moved over to one side of the street to allow for the re-opening of a lane of traffic an saratoga road. they are waiting for the police to come up with a traffic plan and have the person the nel to direct people through the area are. we expect it could be happening shortly. we have a police officer waiting to talk with us as we seek. we'll get to him. for now near los gatos, "today

aircraft lost control, killing the piet. the only person on board the airplane. reporting live in livermore, bob riddell, "today in the bay." >> clearing up the mystery. the san francisco giants are running into opposition now as they tie to develop the area around at&t park. here is what's going on. the giants are are planninging to build a 28-acre development including 1500 housing units and 22-story buildings. the plan goes to voters in november. supervisor jane kim telling the chronicle is he eel introduce a competing measure today making the oomph out of the giants plan. more affordable housing. whichever receives more votes would win out. the nonaffordable ousing ones, will come at a pretty penny to be that close. >> got to be qualified. >> a plan years in the making may be on the verge of reality

distance. visibility is mostly clear, but you may dry. keep in mind there is patchy fog. today in the bay reaching 65 degrees if san francisco. micro climates now, cool as you walk out the door in the low to mid 50s. still mostly clear skies and the wind forecast by 9:00. we have a mostly calm wind, a light wind from the northwest as we go into the afternoon at noon we feel winds picking up. maybe a day not to worry so much about combing the hair . if winds kicking up to 20 miles per hour. it will be breezy. warming. even into the afternoon. mostly clear skies across the bay year by 9:00 we see many more clouds moving in. maybe rain in the weekend forecast. details on that. we'll talk about the tropical

systems in less than ten minutes. now over to mike. >> we'll talk about an update for the los gatos fire. looking ear toward the bay bridge. first of all we have the backup going on. we should see it any second now. the only real slow down not over in the east bay or north bay. the earlier crash west 580 caused the backup. all lanes clear. tough to recover. still slowing oond down here highway 9. kris are sanchez said the scene of the fire was active with fire inside the building. they are looking at 6:00 before they can institute that. >> takata will stop producing inflaters tied to defective air bags but will will use a propellant deemed dangerous by experts. when is a threat not a threat? new debate on what you can say

overnight a dramatic rescue from china. a passenger ship carrying more than 450 people capsized, killing at least five people. crews rescued 18 others after search teams heard sounds copping from the partly submerged ship about 12 hours after it went down. the captain said the ship sank kwekly after being caught in a cyclone. >> dramatic rescue there. happening today on capitol hill a top official from takata is testifying before a compound looking into the biggest recall in america's history. >> "today in the bay" tracie pottss live in washington, d.c. this morning. an advanced copy of the official remarks give us a glimpse of what the company is doing to try to fix the problem. >> exactly. they have to fix a new design that doesn't include ammonium

nitrate, the chemical used in the -- the propellant used in this that they think was the problem especially in warm and hot climates. they are redesigning and trying to ro it out to retro-fit millions of cars with the defective version. they are sending out competitor versions of this to get it done more quickly. today we'll hear that v.p. testify before a house committee. we'll hear from the national highway traffic safety administration that's overseeing the recall as they try to look into not only how quickly the recall can happen, how safe they can make the cars but what takata knew and how long they knew it. some of the problems go back a decade. >> thank you very much. a plan now to reign in the power of puc one step closer to becoming a reality.

state senators voting to approve a bill to take away sop of the power from the public utility president while increasing state oversight. this in the wake of the pg & e scandal involving michael peavy. that's moving on to the state assembly. >> three more north bay citys pulling the plug on pg & e opting for a power source closer to home. all reportedly flipped the switch on sonoma clean power. the public utility has been around 20 years and services 90% of sonoma county. >> happening today, how much water did you save last month? today we'll find out the answers on the final exam. state water officials are release new numbers showi ing h much water was saved. this after the worst snow pack on california's record books. they will release data on how

it is weakening. still with strong wind speeds making a tack farther to the west into the next couple of days it may track to the east making a little bit of a curve closer to cabo. it may be a more direct hit would be tropical storm blancament now the track of the storm is to bring it close to cabo as a category one hurricane. something we'll keep an eye on as we go through the week. maybe connecting and drawing up moisture into into the bay area. the next coup of days will be dry on the future cast. this is what the clouds and radar looks like. it stay thes clear for the next couple of days. low morning clouds. more cloud cover wednesday into thursday. by thursday afternoon, maybe light sprinkles to start the day. showers for the north bay briefly. once again a higher cannes of rain by the end weekend with the
