>> we may be dusting off the umbrellas in time for the weekend. rain may be headed the to the bay. more in the forecast coming up. >> a couple of slow spots now. i'll talk about the tri-valley as well. that change coming up. . >> announcer: from nbc bay area this is "today in the bay.." >> good morning to you. thanks for joining us. >> we are going to bring you an update. a multi-million dollar home still smoldering after flames ripped through it overnight. >> this is happening at a home on los gatos saratoga road along the border of los gatos. kris sanchez has been at the scene all morning long. we understand a woman inside the house woke up to what she called popping noises. >> yes. she heard popping noises. ended up being spray paint cans from an art studio on the second floor.

that floor was fully engulfed. firefighters standing outside, waiting for it to extinguish. it's cover had had in foam. the flames keep coming up and up. the danger is that the whole thing will collapse. the fire investigator says he can't even get close enough to try to determine what the cause mean. it was 2:30 this morning. all of the five people in the home at the time were sleeping. the woman woke up, smelled smoke. went to see what the source w was she woke everybody up and got home out alive. >> i walk around the back and see smoke off the roof. i ended up seeing smoke coming out of a window. i knew the house was on fire. i ran back in, woke everybody up. got everybody out. >>. >> the fire is still burning and that's why the rigs are on the roadway. that's the reason why the road is still closed as mike has been

watching. we have been keeping in touch. they cannot open one lane of traffic here on highway 9. because they have to make sure the rigs are are a safe distance from the fire. listen to the might the fire department had in this area. before the fire they were responding to a bad crash a half mile down the road. a woman crashed into a tree. they had to use the jaws of life to get her out. before that there were power outages. they were running around dealing with that. that's not going to happen with the crews right here. unknown how these things are related. we foe it creates a tax on the subpoena. -- system. strained for resources here. kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> another story developing

overnight and a drop tick rescue in china. a passenger ship carrying more than 450 people capsized, killing at least five people. crews are rescued more than a dozen people after they heard sounds coming from the partly submerged ship. about 12 hours after it went down. the captain says the ship sank kwekly after being caught in a cyclone. >> many lives saved. >> developing closer to home, what went wrong? this morning federal investigators hope daylight could deliver answers as to why a small plane crashed, killing the pilot. >> bob riddell is live near the scene of the crash. now we know the pilot is from the bay area. >> not from livermore. the medical examiner confirmed he 's local. they are not releasing his name yet. the sheriff's office is out by the wreckage. it's a piper aircraft that crashed in north liverhr many.

we are expecting the ntsb to come out here. the pilot had a problem with the aircraft are. here is a clip of his conversation. >> i have a slightle control problem. i'm going to circle and check it out and head back to the president pattern. >> take notice of how calm he was. it's not clear how soon after that bit of conversation his plane lost kro and crashed into the field. you can see in the photos from people who live near the field, they heard the plane crash a temperatured images. the fire department was able to put it out. the pilot did die at the scene.

this is fortunately a remote area. the closest is a good mile away. no one on the ground was in danger. the ntsb expected this morning to get a better sense of what caused the craft to go down unfortunately i willing the one man. >> hopefully his family could get resolution. 6:05 now. happening today a court hearing for the woman accused in a road rage crash that killed a ser vase vis man from the bay area. new cell phone video shows dar la jackson's nissan altima closely following a motorcycle on i-5. you see it spotlighted there. this was last week in san diego. the chp said jackson hit and killed the motorist identified as zachary bi ub, a chief petty officer this the fay vi. he was from san jose. officers say the two got into an altercation on the freeway that led to the crash. jackson now faces murder charges. >> it's 6:05.

this this morning a $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of a driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run in the east bay. it happened friday night on 28th street in oakland, not far from mcclimate high school. this is a photo of the victim royce vaughan. he may have been at a local restauranter or bar in the hours before his death. investigators are looking for a vehicle sip to this one. white toyota sj cruiser. >> now in san francisco, a dramatic end to a dangerous police chase. all of this on camera. you soo police mounting the top of cars. the went down during rush hour next to the popular westfield shopping center. police say the suspect hit several cars and a patrol agent.

everyone will be okay. we know the suspect was a wanted parolee. >> a once beloved day the care worker, now accused child mo mes lester is out on bail. 22-year-old alex kurtz was arrested on suspicion of lewd acts on a child. he was taken into custody at the school. his alleged victim attended the after school program there last year. the alleged molestation happened in december of last year. last night parents had an emotion al meeting with police. >> it breaks my heart somebody had to go through it pt. >> i hope it never happens again. >> ongoing investigation. so far, no other victims have come forwardment. >> the san francisco giants are looking at opposition as they try to develop the area around at&t park. sp giants are building a 28-acre

south bay peninsula. upper 60s in the forecast. overall the general trend will be for a touch warmer air in time for the weekend. we may also be track aring rain. another look. how traffic is flowing with meek. >> as you would expect we have some of the traffic starting to build. unexpected it's a lighter flow. well we have been talking about it. as far as the volume goes even today. look at northbound 101. just north of this shot. we'll sow you the happen. the arrow points to the camera. 87, 85, 280. not even the yellow zone. not even dipping below the speed limit yet. that will kick in in about a half an hour. over here we have continuing highway 9 with the closure because of the fire that kris sanchez is reportingment the

breaking news. government officials say five flights were named in bomb threats. four of the five flightses are are on the ground already. the airline said the the threats have been determined to be not credible. go of the flights involve san francisco airport. one is a united airlines flight to chicago still on the ground. the other is still in the area. a korean airlines flight number 23 are from seoul. that will land shortly after # 11:00. the threats are similar to previous threat overseas the last two weeks suggesting chemical weapons are on board. today's threats are of low concern but all claims are being checked out of an abundance of caution. >> ellen pou headed back to court. >> she's appealing the the case. that will cost her a good amount of cash. >> close to a million dollars. she lost her civil lawsuit against cliner perkins with the

jury clearing them on all points meaning pao who brought the suit has to pay their legal fees. clinerer said it would waive the fees if she didn't a peel the case. pao filed an intention to appeal with superior court monday. in it she and her lawyers do not say what they will be appealing. you don't appeal a verdict. you have to name an error in the trial. she has 40 days to spell out what the error is cisco's chief officer is leaving. it's not uncommon to see top executives leave during a change in leadership. turning to your money, a squeaker of a win on wall street means we are positive for the month. sometimes you will hear the term june swoon. it's a period of negativity by trader ifs june.

north bay 76 and sunny skies. still fog on the bay. especially for the coastal area. you are seeing the fog roll through. as i take you through the forecast we see mostly clear skies throughout the afternoon. later tonight the clouds roll back in. then a few more clouds for the morning. clearing in the afternoon. same story for wednesday. look what happens on thursday. we see the cloud cover increase. it is what the radar and satellite look like as we start to see splotches of green here indicating a little bit of rain for the north bay for thursday and fridayment a better chance of rain for the weekend. i will be talking more about it as we go into the next few minutes. the micro climate forecast for today, morgan hill s, 79 degrees. redwood city, 71 lt 60s across san francisco, the north bay into the low to mid 70s in fremont. 72 degrees while livermore today tops out at 77 degrees. looking ahead through the weekend, looking at a chance of

just in this morning the faa is grounding every single united airlines flight worldwide because of a computer problem at united. we are not sure of the extent of the problem so far. the warning is posted on the faa website and says every airport is affected. we are of course working to get more information about this. new details for you as soon as we get them. the headline here, computer problems at united this morning according to the faa. call the airline if you have a flight. so far grounded until at least

worldwide because of computer problems at united. the warning posted on the faa website says every airport is affected until at least 7:00 this morning pt. >> happen ing today on capitol hill, a top official from takata testified before a. >> giving us a little bit of a glimpse of what the company is doing to try to fix the problem. >> they have come up with a new design. they hope will solve the problem. the matter is how quickly they can manufacture it. and get it out to deal with 34 million cars. they are using competitor parts to do this. the government believes it's the inflater that's the problem.

takata has taken that out in the hopes of resolving a problem. it seems to ignite. today takata's vice president will come to capitol hill and tell lawmakers they have a new design to get out. they have taken the chemical out and they also deeply regret what's happened. they believe only a small percentage of the nearly 34 million cars actually have are a problem. they are in charge of the recall. >> a will the of drivers impacted. >> meantime we could soon learn more about a dead le amtrak train derailment in philadelphia. a congressional committee also beginning to push for answers on a hearing on the tragedy.

new this morning a russian arms makerer con if i wered one on its missiles was use shoot down a flight last year. flight 17 was shot down over eastern ukraine last summer. there is controversy over who is responsible for attackment because of the fighting between russian backed rebels and the ukrainian government. the maker of the missile says

russia doesn't use that version anymore but the missile is part of ukraine's arsenal. investigators stopped short of blaming ukraine's hill tear for the attack. >> new this morning, something most football fans thought would not happen again. star running back adrian peterson expected to return to the minnesota vikings. the team holds the first of three voluntary practices. he's excited to put on the bads and the vikings have been in a bitterer dispute. peterson played in one game. many believe the vikings would trade him. >> officers in i iowa had an unusually rescue on their hands. a deer got caught in a soccer net. dash cam video shows the deer trying to escape. one of the officers had to lie on top of the deer to hold it down while another officer tried to cut the net away. once it was free the deer sprinted quickly into the woods. >> poor guy.

>> announcer: now 15 minutes of continuous news, weather and traffic on "today in the bay." >> breaking news to follow up on this morning. two major stories as we look outside at sfo where flights had been grounded. all united flights across the krand the world due to computer problems. >> there were issues worldwide. imagine all the united flights

that were completely stopped. now they have started them again. we understood it was because of computer problems but there are additional concerns this morning because be there were bomb threats. >> we'll start with the bomb threats. government officials telling nbc news the bomb threats were made against five flights this morning. the airlines say the threats aren't credible. four of the flights are on the ground at the moment. two at san francisco airport. one is a united airlines flight to chicago . that flight never took off. it is still on the ground at sfo. the other is in the air. it's a kerr yans airlines flight. it's halfway across the pacific now. that will land shortly after 11:00. the threat is similar to similar threats over the past few weeks suggesting chemical weapon call weapons on board.

that turned out not to be true. officials tell nbc news the threat is a low concern but they are being checked out. as an abundance of caution. here is the other issue are. there was an issue with united airlines computers. just a few minutes ago, the faa lifted a ground stoppage that had affected every single united airlines flight in the world. apparently because of a pilot's computer problem. the faa saying every airport, every flight affected. now add been liftedment if they are on a flight in the air, this is not an issue you need to worry about. this is an issue with the pilot's computer system with mapping or something. we have seen problems before post recently with american airlines. if you have a loved one with a flight in the air, don't worry.

it's going to be fine. two issues, bomb threat, computer problem, terrible day to fly. >> doesn't sound good out there. at least it's lifted now. we have another update to breaking news. this one is local. a multi-million dollar home still smoldering this morning after flames ripped through overnight. >> this is happening along the border of los gatos and mon monte sarino. a woman inside the house woke up to what she called popping noises and woke everyone else up in the house. >> there were spray paint cans in an art studio on the second level of the home. that's where the fire appears to have started on the second level. you can see waes left of the home now. firefighters dousing it with water. you can see flames licking the rooftop. much of the second story is down. collapsed down on the first floor.

the good news is everyone made it out. >> i ended up seeing smoke copping out of a window. i knew the house was on fear.mi. i knew the house was on fear. i went back in and got everyone out. >> there were two cats, one is unaccounted for. but the people are out. there were power outages in the area.

clearing by lunch. breezy ander warm this afternoon. the fog returns this evening. sun set at 8:26 as the days continue to get longer. this is the future cast. this shows what the clouds and radar could look like into the next couple of days. fog near the coast. as we go into the rest of the day, a couple more clouds moving in by tomorrow. out to the pacific, a category two hurricane with wind speeds of 105 miles an hour. to the southwest of cabo, maybe making a turn closer to cabo over the ethics couple of days. we are watching another tropical system behind that. this is tropical storm blanca, currently a tropical storm but may become a category two hurricane. this one looks to take more of a direct hit toward cabo.

across the flat section. no incidents reported. no problems. i want to show you westbound away from us on the foster city side. we'll see traffic coming toward us with the continuation. we see traffic flowing nicely. jamming up off the flat section up the high rise. look at the map . slower drives getting over from the east bay. over on the shoulder. the east shore freeway moves well. we have slowing coming througher for southbound 101. typical pattern. lighter than typical. we shift toward the summerer time commute which sees the traffic lighter shifting toward the later morning southbound. through fremont into the south bay. northbound routes through san ho say show 101, 87, 280 and 85 with speeds toward 15 miles per hour at their worst.

the bottom of the screen here, highway 9 has one way traffic control past the scene of the fire causing a slow drive from highway 17 to north santa cruz. from time to time you can see the smoke. just a note for drivers through the area. back to you. >> thank you very much. 6:53. twoping news close to home. this morning federal investigators hope daylight could bring answers as to why a small plane crashed, killing the pilot. >> bob riddell joins us live near the scene of the cash. that pilot reported issues control aring the plane moments before it went down, not far from the local airport. >> you can see in this field a couple hundred yards from where we are north of 580. a few mile it is from the livermore municipal airport where we know the alimeda county medical examiner arrived on the scene. we believe there are investigators with the ntsb to determine what caused this single engeneral aircraft to crash, killing the pilot.

vi. he was from san jose. officers say the two got into some kind of argument on the freeway that led to the crash. jackson is facing murder charges. >> shock and disbelief in the tri-valley. a once beloved day care worker now accused of sexual assault. police arrested 22-year-old alex kurtz on suspicion of lewd acts on a child. he worked at building kids day care in pleasanton and was taken into custody at the school. his alleged victim is a 13-year-old girl who attended the after school program there last year. she is not a student now. the alleged molestation happened in december of last year. now this morning he's out on bail. police say this is an ongoing investigation. so far, no other victims have come forward. a plan years in the making may be on the verge of reality for oakland's residents scarred by the deadly 1990 fire storm involving million os dollars to clear nonnative trees. >> stephanie is live in oakland. not everyone is on board with this idea.

bay." >> we have been following breaking new this is morning about the united airlines ground stoppage that kept every united plane on the ground until a few minutes ago. scott has new information for us. >> good news for traveling. the ground stop has been lifted by united airlines. let's take you out live with the helicopter to san francisco. you can see one of them has at least pushed away from the gate. united airlines does say it is trying to get everything back to normal. this is apparently a dispatching issue. a computer issue that forced airlines -- united airlines all over the world to hold at their gate. aircraft in the air, of course, continued on tear way. united did release a statement saying united began delaying flights at approximately 8:00 a.m. central time or 6:00 a.m. or time to be sure aircraft left with proper dispatching information. flights are are now departing and we are accommodating our customers to their destinations.
