investigation found that officers failed miserably when homeland security red teams tried to smuggle weapons past check points. tsa is waiting on congress to confirm a new administrator but the secretary of homeland security is ordering immediate changes at all airports. this morning the acting head of the ts a is out. an 11-year veteran. of the agency who took over in january immediately reassigned to another area within the department of homeland security. it comes after a humiliateing investigation from homeland security found that tsa screeners failed to detect mock explosives and other contraband in a majority of tests. the tests were conducted by homeland security red teams charged with probing tsa check points nationwide. nbc news confirmed that screening officers failed to

detect weapons in 67 out of 70 attempts, a 95% failure rate. in one case an alarm sounded, but even during a patdown the screening officer failed to find a fake explosive taped to an agent's back. >> any of these failures are a concern from a training standpoint are the officers. >> jay johnson says additional test results are classified by the tsa has been directed to conduct training for officers in airports nationwide and training for all supervisors. >> the system is in need of serious analysis to determine what the problem is. >> so the agency's deputy director will take over until congress confirms the new

administrator they hope pete nefinger will take over. >> let me talk to you about the other breaking news. five threats made against five airliners. what's the level of credibility according to officials? >> government sources say not very high, but five aircraft had bomb threats or rather chemical explosive threats phoned in against them. they are american 648. it's already on the ground in philly. lax to atlanta, unite dd is on the ground, we have korean air 23, which is coming from seoul, south korea, to san francisco has not landed yet. they are keep inging that plane in the air because they think the credibility of the threat is very low. >> tom costello, lots of news in the world of aviation this morning. tom, thank you. . a packed cruise ship flipd over on the river.

bill neely is following this story. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. it's now clear this is china's worst passenger ship disaster in almost 70 years. more than 400 people are still missing. relatives are distraught. and they're asking not only how did the ship sink, but how come the captain left the ship and survived? the search for survivors is a separate one. hammering on the overturned hull to try to make contact with passengers still trapped inside. but time is running out on the yangtze river where the ship with more than 450 on board sank in rough weather. some people have been rescued. this 65-year-old woman was pulled out by divers. a few managed to swim ashore, but after a day of searching hope is fading for so many more on "the eastern star" which was carrying hundreds and crew.

the ship's captain and chief engineer are among the survivors and are in police custody. no distress call was sent. chinese leaders have rushed to the scene. thousands of police and rescuers are helping, but weather conditions are poor and visibility low leaving relatives clinging to fading hope that their loved ones will be pulled out. well, the captain has now been questioned by police. he says the ship was caught in a cyclone and sank very quickly while many passengers were asleep. but he abandoned them to save himself and he failed to make a distress call and relatives want to know why. >> desperate hours there. bill, thank you. the commute has been a very messy one across the east.

heavy rains once again triggering flood threats from the southeast up into new england. dylan is in for al this morning. >> as you can imagine it's cause ing a lot of delays in the northeast. we also had a pretty miserable evening commute yesterday. look at newark, new jersey. roads were completely flooded out. we even had reports of fish floating through the streets along with some people there as well. we saw them trying to trudge through it. we had 3 to 4 inches in the northeast. same goes for the d.c. area yesterday. it was also a bad commute there. they also had winds too. look at this tree fell on to this bus full of people. they climbed out the back. no one was injured. it was a messy day yesterday and this morning we're starting out with more showers from the mid-atlantic to new england where we have the threat of some of those showers producing some pockets of heavier downpours that could lead to more flooding. we have up to 75-minute. delays in washington, d.c. area. all in new york city because of the poor visibility.

it's also chilly too. 48 degrees in boston. 52 in new york city. 64 in d.c. we're going to see this area of low pressure move to the northeast. we'll clear out in the northeast later today for a a brief period, but we are going to see the front stall through north and south carolina for the next 48 hours. because of that we should see showers and storms that produce 3 to 5 inches of rain, especially in norfolk, virginia. now we're shifting that flood threat to the southeast for the next couple days. >> dylan, thank you very much. natalie is following developments. >> the senate is expected to vote on that house. bill that would end the nsa's bulk collection of phone records. it expired midnight on sunday. the nsa stopped gathering the phone records from companies. the bill known as usa freedom act would reauthorize the surveillance but would faze out the collection of phone records over time.

meantime, amtrak's president will face tough questions on capitol hill today over the crash that killed eight people. the train from washington to new york derailed on a curve while going over 100 miles per hour and there's still no word on why it was going so fast. secretary of state john kerry is back in the united states. he arrived at a boston hospital late monday night in an ambulance where he's expected to have surgery. secretary kerry broke his leg over the week while cycling in eastern france. and kerry is in good spirits. hundreds of mourners gathered on monday to pay their respects to three members of the savopoulos family who were murdered in their home last month. savvas savopoulos, his wife amy, and their young son philip were honored. following the funeral the daughters walked behind the cassettes draped with white

flowers. some frightening video out of japan. four people were injured when a giant kite crashed into a crowd at a weekend festival. hundreds are gathered there for an event when a flier lost control of the kite. it weighed 1500 pound. one person in serious conditions. strong winds may have contributed to that crash. and football star adrian peterson is returning to the minnesota vikings today. he will participate in the tem's voluntary practice after nine months away from football. the running back says he's excited to put on a uniform again after missing the final 15 games of last season while addressing child abuse charges. and a police officer becomes dangerously close to a lightning strike. the moment caught on the car's dash cam. take a look at the clouds moving across the area. the blinding flash struck the

bridge right in front of the officer's vehicle. you see there it's the chunk that it left, the damage behind, the missing chunk of concrete on the bridge. the officer is okay. that's a scary situation. >> if you've ever been that close to a lightning strike, you almost hear it before you see it. it's like a -- it's just unbelievable. >> how's it looking out west? >> we have nice area of high pressure in control. we have a a lot of sunshine in the forecast. temperatures will be nice and comfortable in the 60s and 70s out in california. 90s in the southwest. the biggest threat will be in the northern plains like north and south dakota and nebraska where we could see an isolated tornado, damaging wind gusts possible with heavier downpours. east coast, showers lasting from new england into the southeast. we'll get to your local forecast

well, could there soon be a female viagra? interest is growing this morning over a possibility of a little pink pill to help certain women regain their libido. on thursday fda advisers will once again consider whether to approve a drug that's been rejected twice. kate snow has the story. >> so it's just you and your lady. >> reporter: it looks like a viagra ad, but this parody is mocking all those male pills and their big budget commercials. >> lucky for you you have countless medication options that will make you just as randy as a teenager. too bad your lady doesn't have any. >> reporter: even the score made the video backed by pharmaceutical companies. including the one that makes the so-called little pink pill. >> for the fda to approve this drug would be giving in to a public relations campaign. and decisions on drugs should be made on risks and benefits, not

on public relations. >> reporter: but proponents say the drug is addressing a real problem. low sexual desire with a pill taken every night that targets chemicals in the brain, not another organ. in the latest clinical trial, more than a thousand women diagnosed with low desire took it or a placebo for about six months. the women on the medication reported improvements in sexual desire and twice as many satisfying sexual events as before. side effects included fatigue, nausea, and sleepiness. amanda parrish was part of that trial. the divorced mom of four used to pretend to be asleep to avoid sex. but after two weeks on the pink pill -- >> i'm like my word this drug is working. >> i thought it was terrific. i mean, it was like my girl is back. and she was flirty again. it was like going back to what we had. >> reporter: what did you call it? randy teenager?

it has been submitted for approval twice before but the fda wanted more information. new safety studies found it did not cause liver problems or sleepiness behind the wheel. evidence couples like the parrishs hope will convince the fda and lead to a whole lot more of the ever-present ads but this time aimed at women. for "today," kate snow, nbc news, nashville. >> well, we asked sprout about what the pill might cost. the company said it's too soon to speculate. it is expected to be just the first in a line of pharmaceutical companies ready to bring products like this to the market. all right. in the meantime, an investigation is now underway into the tragic death of an american woman who was mauled by a lion at a south african wildlife park. katy tur has the latest on this. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. investigators are right now trying to figure out why and how the american woman were attacked. authorities are reviewing all of

the evidence which reportedly includes pictures the woman was taking of the lion right before it attacked her. a 22-year-old american woman was killed by a lion at a south african wildlife park on monday after she left her car window down. witnesses say a female lion like this one walked slowly up to the suv while the woman was taking photos of it before it suddenly sprang. biting her through the open window. monday's incident was not the first at the park which promises nowhere can you get closer to a pride of lions and other animals and still be completely safe. just last march an australian man was also attacked through his open car window. the park says it repeatedly warns tourists both verbally and marked signs to lock their doors and keep their windows up. >> witnesses that were there at the time that saw this incident took place, they said both of the windows were wide open.

and it's contrary to all our signage. >> reporter: it's a warning many people often ignore. just look at this clip. kids hanging out of the back of a car trying to get a better shot of a lion only feet away. but even with windows closed the close views can sometimes turn into close calls like this one where a lion opens a car door with its teeth. >> lock the door. >> oh, my gosh. i didn't know they could do that. >> reporter: outtakes like these are a big draw on the internet. lion after lion clawing on windows and chasing down cars as they try to speed away. sadly this time it seemed the people in the car weren't so lucky. the issue according to the guides is that there are so many people taking these tours now that the lions have lost their natural fear of humans and of cars feeling much more confident to attack. matt and savannah, the lion in this incident is now in an isolated pen, but the park

remains open to the public. >> all right. katy tur on this story, thank you very much. now to the magazine cover everybody is talking about this morning. caitlyn jenner, formerly bruce jenner, introducing herself to the world on the cover of "vanity fair." this went viral in seconds. >> it happened fast. on monday caitlyn jenner debuted her name and look and dominated the conversation online. she was a top trend on twitter and facebook. let's head into the orange room. the search into caitlyn jenner was three times higher than people looking at the other kardashian news which is kim expecting baby number two. they also rolled out her social media pages yesterday. instagram has been set up. noteworthy number of followers. she broke 1 million followers in just over four hours. that beat the previous record that the president had just two weeks ago. that didn't last long. as you see 1.92 million followers this morning.

searchers are in a race against time to find survivors. more than 450 people were on that ship when it flipped over during a storm. so far only 14 people have been rescued. and we could learn more today about what caused last month's deadly train derailment in philadelphia. the president of amtrak is set to testify before congress. this is the first hearing being held into that accident. coming up we're going to have a little more with tracy morgan as we take him back to the "saturday night live" stage for the first time since his accident. >> it was an emotional trip for him. but we're going to begin with more on bruce jenner's transition to a woman. the former olympian revealed a new look and name on the cover of "vanity fair." we'll talk to the man who spent hours with caitlyn jenner to write this story. but first here's joe fryer. >> reporter: with a single viral image, the world was introduced to caitlyn jenner. "vanity fair" also revealed behind the scenes moments of the shoot.

caitlyn jenner's life but huge difference. more open more honest more connected, more -- everything's centered. caitlyn has found her soul that bruce never had. >> you almost get the sense that caitlyn is euphoric to be free. >> and i think that's the case. i just spoke to her yesterday. she said i'm free. i can live. i don't care about the paparazzi anymore. just make sure it's a good shot but more than that it's relating to the children from her first two marriages. it's having a relationship. he never had a relationship. she is going to have bonds. she is going to be free. she's going to have fun. she was completely isolated i think, for the last five or six years of his life as bruce. >> you mentioned the kids. she had four kids from first marriages. you delve deeply into that. one of the most shocking is what you reveal about the

then-father/child relationship bruce had. in many ways he was an absentee father. >> he was. and he admits that as they were intering adolescence, he was gone. he was married to kris jenner and concentrating on the kardashians and forgot about these kids. it was very hard and bruce jenner said something that rings in my mind. he said it's hard to idolize someone who won the olympics. remember bruce jenner won the olympics. he said i wish my father hadn't done that. because i missed him. he wasn't there. but one of the beautiful parts of this is as caitlyn they are trying hard to reconnect. it's not easy but they're trying. >> would the jenner children have gone out of their way to be warm and accepting and supportive of caitlyn and this transition. i did find it interesting they didn't want to be part of this e! reality show she is doing. >> correct. they felt -- look they could

have got money from it could have got exposure from it. they said dad, you have the ability to have a legacy in sports as a sports figure equal to muhammad ali. you can be a trail blazer here in becoming a woman and becoming a transgender woman. don't blow that with spectacle. don't blow that and they said we do not want to participate. they must have been asked a dozen times. >> how does she feel about it? because she's doing it in a public way, which she's a public figure. in some sense she has no choice about that. >> i think that's right. i mean bruce as bruce said at one point what are my options? i can move to alaska. i can live in the hills. i can live on an iceberg somewhere but the paparazzi will find me. they always do. i can do that or i figured out i need to go public. i think the docuseries is going to be a combination of the serious and she's going to have fun. she's going to try to hit a golf ball 300 yards. it's much harder with breasts, let's face it. >> you talk about kris jenner. there's been a dispute between

them about how much kris jenner knew about these gender issues. what did she tell you? >> you know and kris was civil during the interview and was very open. she said i didn't know. i thought it was a man boob situation. i had a solid "b" cup. as a journalist i didn't want to delve closely into that. i didn't know. i had no idea about the gender issues the severity. i think she's right. i think bruce down played it. it was a phase in my life. it's over. it wasn't over. everyone i think kris has accepted whatever happened in the past i can fix it. and look. they produced two wonderful children and he was a terrific father to the kardashians and i think made it harder for the jenner kids. >> all the jenner kids are hoping to have a relationship with the new caitlyn jenner. that's a good ending to this story. thank you for sharing with us. the july issue of "vanity fair" hits newsstands june 11th.

very few people were rescued. this was one, a 65-year-old woman pulled from the ship after somehow the rescuers heard her. most of the tourists are between 50 and 80 years old. the ship sank late at night in high winds and drifted down river for two miles. the captain and chief engineer of the ship escaped. they told police there was a cyclone and the ship sank very quickly while most of the passengers were asleep. there was no distress call. relatives who, of course, are distraught, want to know why the captain took no emergency action and why he abandoned his passengers and survived. natalie? >> lots of questions there. bill neely, thanks so much. >> a man under surveillance by the joint terrorism task force has been shot and killed in boston. sources tell nbc news the man pulled out a large military-style knife when he was approached by a boston police officer and an fbi agent. both the officer and the agent opened fire. sources stress they do not believe there was any threat to

the general public. the oklahoma highway patrol has released a portion of a dash cam video, showing the deadly confrontation between a trooper and a church pastor. the video appears to show 35-year-old associate pastor fisher shoving an officer, who responded friday after fisher's truck got stuck in floodwaters and fisher was shot and killed during that altercation. police say he had a handgun in his possession. fisher's brother was arrested and charged with assault and public intoxication. their family has challenged the police version of events. both officers have been placed, meanwhile, on administrative leave. lawmakers in san francisco have advanced a package of measures to curb the popularity of sugary drinks. one proposal would require labels on cans and bottles warning sugar laden drinks would lead to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. that would be a first in the united states.

have sort of a knack for endurance stuff and wanted to try to use that to make an impact in her life. i've done a few endurance projects. this is the biggest one to date. 14,000 mile journey across the united states and climbing the highest point in every one. >> the hiking, the biking, the climbing. what makes you most nervous about this challenge? >> most nervous, probably the biking. it is dangerous with a lot of cars on the road. but i'm mostly excited. this is going to be a lot of fun, i think. we're doing things i really like to do. climbing, doing any kind of endurance sport but also we're meeting hundreds of people out there in the parkinson's community. >> it's a chance for people with parkinson's or having it in their family, to get together and be active with other families. and own it and move forward. >> and it continues the great work of the michael j. fox foundation. we'll talk to you more. you'll spend some time with willie next hour? >> that would be great.

she was at a wildlife park there. she had left her car window down which they advise against you doing. witnesses say the lion approached and lunge at the suv while she was taking photos. the driver was also injured. the lion sprang into the car, bit her through the open window and, again, the park does warn tourists about getting too close. also tells them to keep the doors locked. over the years as people have come to visit these parks more and more, people -- the lions have lost their fear according to animal experts. they no longer have fear of humans and of cars. we've seen all this footage of close calls before. the video we showed you earlier in march. when a lion actually opened the door handle to the car.

madeline furnstrum. let's start with this study that came out the relation between fiber intake and diabetes 2. >> there's always been a situation the last couple decades about how much fiber you have and risk of diabetes. this was a study done in europe. so thousands of people were asked how much fiber you eat over a period of about ten years. and what they found is the people that ate the highest amounts of fiber or said they did had a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes. it means this is a useful thing and whether it's fiber alone or it does help with weight loss as well, it could be one of those too. most americans don't eat enough fiber. >> so let's talk about what we need to be eating for women and for men. >> it's something that is hard to get enough fiber. women need about 21, 26 grams. and men, 26 to up to 38 because men are bigger. my general rule of thumb is over 20 grams you're doing great. and that's not hard to do. let's take look. >> can't have too much fiber?

taking a look at the headlines. new analysis finds that breast-fed babies have a 14% to 19% lower risk of pediatric leukemia, the most common childhood cancer. but one expert with the american cancer society warns the study does not prove that breast-feeding prevents cancer. get on your feet. that's the advice of some british researchers who say sedentary workers should stand for at least two hours a day to avoid health risks from too much sitting. the panel also recommends workplace standing time should eventually increase to four hours each day and companies are urged to provide sit/stand desks and allow periods of walks to break up periods of sitting.

you can blame the bird flu for a surge in egg prices. the price has doubled in the past month. consumers already seeing the impact in grocery stores and restaurants. millions of egg laying chickens have died or been euthanized because of the avian flew outbreak in the midwest. on monday the department of agriculture says it will allow imports of pasteurized egg products from the netherlands to ease the shortage. and we have some amazing video to show you of a huge thunderstorm. it was taken monday as the storm rolled over parts of western south dakota and the storm dropped significant rain on the community of blackhawk and nearby areas. a flash flood warning was posted but some pretty amazing video there. something that always gets dylan's attention when you see video like that. >> oh i love time lapse. that's incredible stuff. and we are still looking at another chance of strong storms today. right through north and south dakota. stretching down into nebraska as well. the east coast, though, is rainy and raw. temperatures running about 5 to
