lawrence with the latest on the investigation. and edward, we're hearing they could have had from the inside. >> that's where the investigation is focused. right now new york state police are working on 300 leads to try to find the escaped criminals. the worry is that these convicted murderers will kill again. >> police search a location in upstate new york as investigators look into whether a woman who works at the facility helped the prisoners escape. tensions on both sides of the border increase each moment they're still free. >> it's worrying. >> a little nerve-wracking. david sweat and richard matt were in side-by-side cells and bunched up close to make it look like they were still in bed. they used power tools saturday to drill through a steel wall tlurks pipe and through a brick

wall to freedom. >> i don't believe they could have acquired the equipment they needed to do this without help. and we have a separate investigation that's going through exactly that question. >> police believe the escaped inmates left on foot because the getaway car that was supposed to meet them came too early, too late or not at all. >> and the new york governor says it would have taken a day to drill through the walls and out of the prison. the inmates left a post-up note saying have a nice day. >> brazen. >> we're starting to get a clearer answer to the huge question how did they do it? for that we go to nbc's miguel almaguer. and jeff rossen. >> >> reporter: authorities say the prisoners inside by side cells stufd their bunks with clothes to avoid detection and then used power tools to cut holes and then they broke through a brick wall two feet thick and going

through a steam pipe. they shimmied beneath the prison. breaking out of a manhole more than a block away. >> how long have you been doing this? >> 41 years. >> how do you get through steel? >> this is a piece of quarter-inch plate. from the pictures of the prison break, it likes it could have been that thickness. >> what kind of tools could they have used? >> this is a grinding wheel with a cutting blade. >> something this small that you could hide inside of a cell possibly? >> yes. >> how long would it take to get through. >> anywhere between 30 and 90 minutes. >> look how much noise it makes. >> noise and sparks keep in mind there was construction happening at the prison at the time. some believe the inmates timed their noise with the real construction noise. >> this is another option. this torch is a lot faster and a lot quieter.

>> the fight lasted five minutes, and police were called in and also possibly bringing in child services. another national debate over police tactics and racism is growing after a texas police officer was caught on camera aggressively confronting teenagers at a pool party. mckinney police corporal eric casebolt is seen in the video pulling a 15-year-old girl to the ground. and at one point he drew his gun. we now know that casebolt has met with the internal investigators and actions have sparked outrage in that community. hundreds marched an protested kaug for an end in police brutality. one of the teens involved spoke to nbc last night. saying the officer hit her. >> she said i needed to go home, so i pointed in the direction of my house and he said, no go the other way and i still tried to go in the direction of my house like he told me to do and then he used his baton or stick or

something and hit me in the arm with it. it wasn't like a bash but it was hard enough that i could have bruised from it. >> and the girl said she was later hit in the face. the aclu of texas is asking that mckinney police release the entire incident report and the 911 call. and former house speaker hastert will appear in court, due to an allegation with a former high school student. nbc's jay gray is live in chicago this morning. this comes two weeks after being charged with lying to the fbi and evading federal bank requirements is that right? >> yeah. it is melissa, good to talk to you. as he stands before a federal judge for the first time later today we will see hastert alongside powerful washington lawyer thomas green. again, that all getting started after noon here today.
