world collide, traffic and weather together. that's what's happening today this in the bay we're live with you at 7:25 with more local news, weather and traffic. have a great day. good morning. breaking news. she thought it was love. sources tell nbc news that prison employee joyce mitchell did indeed help the two colors with their escape, and will be charged in the case. this morning, her ex-husband speaking out about her past. >> absolutely not. i loved her. she was my wife. all of a sudden, she changed. >> a new tip in the manhunt leads police to lockdown on area just a few miles from the prison. >> double threat. widespread flooding in the south, severe storms including tornadoes possible from colorado to michigan today. first, on today, new trouble for the duggars. >> 911, what's the address emergency?

>> duggar family home. >> a welfare worker called police last month after being denied access to the family home. >> i guess they're not being cooperative and we have to see the child to make sure the child is all right. >> what was being investigated? and mind games. the cia posts a photo of a cat using a computer, and hints at aliens in the basement. the tweets that have the internet freaking out today, thursday, june 11th, 2015. good morning, everyone. welcome to "today." 7:00 a.m. on the west coast on thursday. >> we have a new development in the prison break case in upstate new york. >> has to do with this woman, joyce mitchell. she's been at the center of a lot of speculation. we can now confirm through
7:02 am
sources how she got involved with the escapees. her role in the getaway plan, and at least some of the trouble she could face now. we are going to start with stephanie gosk on the story frus. good morning to you. >> good morning to you. we're learning now more about her relationship, joyce mitchell's relationship, with these two convicts. loss enforcement has been questioning her for days. the 51-year-old grandmother seamstress met them on the job in the prison tailor shop. now we're learning from senior government officials she, quote, thought it was love. government officials tell nbc news joyce mitchell was supposed to be the getaway driver in richard matt and david sweat's great escape, but on saturday morning when she was supposed to pick them up, she got cold feet, instead, checking herself in to a local hospital where she was treated for a panic attack.
7:03 am
we learned she not only defended the two but was charmed and eventually fell in love with matt. mitchell's son defended his mother, denying any possible romantic relationship with the prisoners. >> she definitely wouldn't have an affair against my father and it wouldn't be with an inmate. no proof to that. >> mitchell's first husband hasn't spoken to her in almost 20 years but believes she could have been manipulated. >> she's from the country. she's from a small town and everything. she could be a country girl that got sweet talked by some city guy. >> mitchell's marriage ended after he says she cheated on him. he doesn't want to judge her based on recent speculation. >> i don't know or not. i loved here. she was my wife, and then she changed and i was devastated. a year and a half later, i moved on. >> officials tell nbc news there will be charges, but for now, they continue to question
7:04 am
mitchell. they don't know at this point what the charges will be. >> thank you very much. >> so while that part of the investigation unfolds, an overnight tip is leading to an urge ntdnt new search for the convicted killers. six days later, could they be just a few miles away from the prison? miguel has that part of the story. >> good morning. officials will only officially say it was a tip that led them to this area. that all schools in the region have been shut down for the day as we have seen a convoy of officers headed up the hill behind me. we haven't seen a large scale operation like this one in quite some time. overnight and into this morning, what may be their best lead. authorities flooding the area just three miles southeast of the clinton correctional facility in dannemora. police shutting down this state road, ordering residents to stay indoors and turn on outside lights. it comes hours after the search expanded into vermont. >> it's insane. crazy.
7:05 am
>> across the border from new york, police on high alert. scouring homes, camp sites, boat slips and bridges for the first time authorities say convicts david sweat and richard matt thought of coming to vermont just before making their daring escape. >> we have information that they thought new york was going to be hot, vermont would be cooler, in terms of law enforcement. >> following new leads in multiple states, more than 500 tips. police are going door to door using these flyers. >> they are murderers so you don't know what they're going to do. >> investigators focusing on the shoreline and seasonal cottages. >> amazing how this has come to this. >> this morning, day six of the manhunt. no confirmed sign of these killers as the dragnet expands deeper into vermont while remaining close to where it all began.
7:06 am
like so many other areas in this region, the land behind me is a thick forest. it will be difficult for officers to conduct their grid search, but we have seen heavy resources officers coming up the hill behind me. they're developing a large police presence here. it may be their best lead and they seem to be closing in on whatever lead that may be. >> thank you. earlier this morning, we spoke about the case of the former fbi profiler and analyst clint van zand. i asked him about joyce mitchell's alleged relationship with the prisoners and why he thinks she hasn't been charged yet. >> well, they want to get the maximum amount of information they can. she may, for example, know what their steps were going to be after they popped out of the manhole. if, for example, she was supposed to drive them, where was she going to drive them? mexico, canada? we know we're looking from border to border in the united states right now, but savannah, there is no information, no solid information amongst 500

the emotions of this woman. perhaps she thought she was helping. you have this slippery slope. do this thing for me, do the next thing for me. all of a sudden, get me an electric saw, a 100-foot extension cord and wait at the manhole. it looks like that very end, should reports be correct, that's when she changed her mind. instead of waiting at the manhole, she checked into a hospital. >> that's the report, not confirmed by nbc that she was probably slated to be the getaway driver and got cold feet. if they were standing there at the end of the manhole cover expecting a ride and not getting one, would you expect them not to be able to get far? >> you always have plan b. realize that inmates inside of a prison, they spend the vast amount of their time teaming, thinking, fandicizing. part of the fantasy is the escape. escape as far as theiry're concerned, is coming out of the maniple manhole.
7:09 am
the reality is our ride is not here. where do we know? they're not survivalists, they don't know the area. it doesn't look like they had a prestaged house, food, we don't know of a car or hostage situation. that's why law enforcement says first of all, let's stay in the local area. if we get information they fled from one coast to another, that's fine. but the last thing they want to do is ignore the possibility that these two guys are inside of one of the hunting cabins, a house, a barn, something like that. hunkered down, waiting, perhaps, for law enforcement to disappear so they could disappear in the population. >> our interview earlier this morning. >> and again, senior government officials confirming to nbc news that joyce mitchell was scheduled to be the getaway driver. got cold feet, checked herself into the hospital instead. much more in the next hour. >> meanwhile, a police officer who resigned in the wake of this video showing him push a teenager to the ground at a pool party is now apologizing for his
