they lose by 20 points at home. he breaks his head open and there is a reason we're blurring that below the belt. >> we'll have lebron's story in a moment. we want to get to the news. it is that intense manhunt for the two killers still on the loose one week since they escaped from that maximum security prison. our national correspondent has the latest on. that good morning. >> good morning. this small rural community remains on edge this morning. some of their latest leads say the escapees may nbtbe in the woods here. the fugitives are one step ahead of search teams. >> deploying an army more than 500 officers, authorities are chasing their best leads. canines were hot on the trail of fugitives david sweat and richard matt. >> we have helicopters. >> reporter: another all night search. after clues like bedding, food wrappers, even footprints were said to be found by investigators in these dense woods. >> 12-3 be advised marshals are

on the scene also. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. teams ordering locals to lock their doors again. trapped neighbors telling nbc news, heavily arms police clearing home after home. >> he had a pistol drawn. he told me to go back to the home because they were doing a push through the woods. >> reporter: the tense lockdown here stretching now two days. police thought to be getting close. >> officer sweeney. a possible sighting of the suspect. >> reporter: the large scale sweep focused on roughly 30 acres. the rugged terrain offering plenty of cover in a swath of woods just three miles from the prison. >> it's a huge police presence. everyone has shot guns and rifles and pistols. >> reporter: but this morning what police don't have is the escapees. still the search is far from over. >> we're looking underneath every rock, behind every tree and inside every structure until we catch these two. >> reporter: while the dragnet here continues to come up empty, investigators say they are

following new leads every day. they remain confident they will close in on the suspects. >> all right. miguel, thank you. >> there's some stunning new information coming to light this morning about the prison employee who allegedly helped with that escape plan. nbc's stephanie gosk has more on that angle. stephanie, good morning. >> good morning, willie. the da here says that a prison guard filed a kblant aboutcomplaint about a possible improper relationship between joyce mitching and david sweat last year. >> reporter: she thought it was love say sources familiar with the investigation about the relationship between convicted killer richard matt and prison worker joyce mitchell. but now the district attorney says the prison investigated mitchell for an alleged improper relationship with david sweat as well. >> there wasn't specific information to either block or facility. had some type of formal charges within the facility filed against her, but action was taken to separate the two of

them for a period of time. >> reporter: the da also denied that mitchell supplied power tools to help the inmates with their escape. >> she brought contraband into the facility but i'm not going to get into what it was. >> reporter: a former guard at clinton correctional told nbc news that some prisoners would target the "weakest workers." civilian savers like joyce mitchell were not considered as "hardcore" as the guards. the inmates even have a name for it, "grooming." >> they're kind of established a little ounce of flirtation. it's a power differential. they have everything to gain. she has everything to lose. >> reporter: in most cases, sources familiar with clinton correctional say the gain was generally small, cigarettes, food, newspapers. but matt and sweat pushed mitchell for much more. sources close to the investigation tell nbc news mitchell was supposed to be the get away driver. but on the day of the escape, the 51-year-old didn't show up. instead, checking herself into a hospital with a panic attack.

mitchell has not been charged. she has been cooperating with police and giving them information but she does still say class d felonies that could bring anywhere from two to seven years in prison. back to you. >> all right. thank you. let's turn to the former west chester county new york district attorney and she is now host of news channels justice with judge janine. so she is charged, how serious could the charges be? >> the sad part of all of this is the laws in new york in terms of aiding and abetting an escape, promoting prison contraband, most of them are d felonies, the most can you face assuming there is evidence is to support it is seven years. >> what about a conspiracy charge? >> a conspiracy charge wouldn't get more than that based on the other underlying charge which is the escape. >> if the reports are true she was supposed to be the get away driver and didn't do it, will that help her situation at all with the prosecutors. >> it depends it, f. there is any action of the conspiracy on her part, then she culpable. the fact she didn't go through

it with, she doesn't matter. she committed some act in the course of that conspiracy. but the fact that she pulled back and didn't call the police, that's not going to help her at all. >> there are all kinds of reports about her alleged relationships with one, maybe both of these inmates. you know, aren't correction officers trained not to fall for the charms of the prison inmate? i mean this is not exactly a new story where the inmates try to wow their way into the hearts of the guards. >> human beings are human beings regardless of the setting. what you got is you've got an attempt always by prisoners to row manlt romanticize with a correction officer. it happens all the time. the problem right now is you have the two guys who one has life without parole, i don't understand why they don't have some kind of gps or a chip implanted in them. if they're lifers or at least one, is the other is 25 to life, there is no way we should be going through this. we should be able to identify

them immediately based upon gps or a chip. >> have you ever seen a case like this? i mean outside of the movies, where there was such an elaborate prison escape plot? >> look, when i was da, there was an escape plot but nothing like this. this is shaw shafrpg redemption and the problem is now every other inmate around the state is going to say -- around the country, maybe i can do this, too. >> always good to you have here. thank you so much. >> there was a new arrest overnight tied to a chilling plot to kill police officers in boston. nbc justice correspondent pete williams has more. >> good morning. this is the second person who officials say was aware of plans by a boston man to carry out attacks with knives. he was shot to death last week by boston police and fbi agents who sought to question him. overnight the fbi arrested nicholas ravinski, 24 from rye richlt police and the fbi searched his home for several days last week and also took him in for questioning. officials say he and another man

met on a rhode island beach almost two weeks ago and discussed the plan by raheem to behead a new york woman, pamela geller, who organized last month's contest in texas. the fbi says he changed his mind and decided to attack police. officials did not disclose what charges will be filed against ravinski when he appears in court which will be later today. he'll be formally charged and more details will be revealed. willie? >> we'll look for that court appearance today. thank you so much. >> turning t >> turning to natalie now. she is following more information and developments about that major cyber attack. >> officials are acknowledging that massive hack into government personnel records was more serious than once thought. we first told you about this story last week. now it turns out that some of the stolen data was from diplomats and other workers with security clearances who deal with nuclear and trade secrets. hackers believed to be from china may have access government data bases undetected for more than a year.

a virginia high school student pleaded guilty thursday to providing material to support to isis. officials say 17-year-old used social media to garner monetary support and recruit others to fight with isis. prosecutors say he also went online to help another teen make travel arrangements to syria. he could face 15 years in prison. a cleveland judge ruled there is probable cause to charge two police officers in the death of 12-year-old rice. it still up to the grand jury whether the officers will be charged. rice was killed by police gunfire in november outside of a recreation center. officials told investigators that they believed the boy was reaching for a firearm which turned out to be a pellet gun. a showdown on capitol hill. many house democrats say they plan to vote today against a measure to retrain americans who have lost their jobs because of international trade. democrats say they are willing

27 million people at risk. isolated tornadoes in this region. and what we're going to watch is the future cast pushes through, more heavy showers and thunderstorms. look at what is happening down here from oklahoma into texas. we could be looking at very heavy rain, in fact, we expect to see flood threats from texas, oklahoma all the way into illinois with heavy rainfall amounts. about a half inch to an inch in the northeast. but look at what's coming between friday and saturday. as we go even further into the weekend, there could be five to eight inches of rain in northern texas and parts of western oklahoma. flooding is going to be another big problem as we head into the weekend and early next week. we're going to get to your local forecast coming up in the next

teenager make travel plans to syria. and a wide area of the country is dealing with flood threats. several parks are under water in denver and a similar scene in parts of louisiana where the red river is still rising and not expected to crest until monday. and coming up on "my kid would never do that," teens faced with what they think is someone trying to take advantage of a girl who appears to be drunk. will the teen speak up? stay tuned. we begin with a bizarre investigation that comes out of washington state. a prominent naacp leader accused of lying about being black. today sheinelle jones is here with the story. good morning. >> reporter: rachel is president of the naacp. she is also chair of the city's office of police ombudsman commission. and it's that position that's led to the scandal. the question city officials in spokane, washington, want answered this morning, did she violate policy by lying about her race on a job application. she serves as chair woman of the

city's office of police ombudsman commission where she identified herself as black, white and american indian for the volunteer appointment. she is the head of the local chapter of the naacp, and also teaches africana studies at eastern washington university. >> she wants to recreate reality. she wants to just invent it herself. >> reporter: now her parents, who are both white, have come forward, telling the nbc affiliate, khq, their family ancestry is czech, swedish and german with a touch of native american heritage and for years, their daughter has been misleading people. >> she knows it's false. but i think she has told herself, as well as she has told others this erroneous identity of hers enough that by now she may believe it more than she believes the truth. >> reporter: she made headlines in spokane back in february when she said racist and threatening letters had been sent to the naacp post office box. when a reporter for a television

station kxly interviewed her, she was also asked about her racial background. >> is that your dad? >> yeah that's -- that's my dad. >> reporter: this man right here is your father? right there? >> do you have a question about that? >> reporter: yes, ma'am. >> okay. >> reporter: i was wondering if your dad really is an african-american man. >> that's a very -- i don't know what you're implying. >> reporter: are you african-american? >> i don't -- i don't understand the question. i did tell you that yes, that's my dad. and he was unable to come in january. >> reporter: are your parents -- >> reporter: the story quickly went viral trending worldwide on twitter overnight, many asking her to be removed from her job, saying don't talk to me about how she understood knew the black struggle when she could pick and choose when to be black.

come down a few degrees for sunday, we keep the sunshine, a stronger on shore flow but overall it is looking like a nice but toasty weekend. pors and that's your latest weather. willie? >> al thank you so much. how do inmates become so close with prison employees they would actually help with their escape? nbc's kerry sanders is at a maximum security iowa state penitentiary in ft. marred madison with an inside look. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, willie no. matter what prison in our nation veterans corrections officers say they constantly have to remain vigilant because inmates are like conmen constantly trying to exploit whatever weakness they can find. it was inevitable. the escape has prompted prison authorities across the country, including here at iowa state penitentiary to reexamine the way things are done. >> we recently had a restricted movement lockdown due to an

escape attempt at this institution. >> reporter: do you think that's because they were encouraged by what they heard in new york? >> i don't know for sure. it certainly well could be. >> reporter: as in the movies like "the green mile." >> do you understand? >> yes. i think i can. >> reporter: corrections officers' daily interactions with inmates are a balancing act. share too much information and an inmate smells vulnerability. >> i know you've got something going on marriage probably on the rocks, anything i can do. >> reporter: they're trying to connect. >> yes. >> reporter: and when they make that connection. >> establish that rapport and play on that rapport. >> reporter: use it as your weakness and their position of power. >> set the hook if you will. >> reporter: in the netflix show "orange is in the new black" inmates use anything to compromise those in charge especially when it's men and women. >> it's one of those things where it's kind of a catch-22 when you're trying to be empathetic with them they try to turn around and use that against you. >> reporter: because they're

trying to manipulate. >> absolutely. >> reporter: it's why corrections officers not only watch over inmates but also each other. >> prison experts say every inmate sitting in a cell like this wonders the same thing. even if they're not going to act on it how to escape. >> ingenuity in prison is amazing. >> reporter: larry laughton was an inmate in federal prison for 11 years. he has turned his life around and helps troubled teens. >> believe me it's easy to get into a relationship and get hooked up with a guard. >> reporter: here in iowa at another prison inmates are kept busy in workshop. the reasoning, less time to plan escapes. >> and if a tool goes missing? >> if a tool goes missing, nobody goes back to their cell. everybody is searched the place is searched shook down until it's found. >> reporter: here at the iowa state prison they allowed us in because they're proud of the way they run this penitentiary. it was first opened in 1839.

that was seven years before iowa was even a state. and willie if you're wondering why we blurred the faces of the inmates, it's not because they have a right to privacy, rather out of deference to the victims of their crimes who may be watching television this morning and would just be too shocked to see their faces on the morning news. >> disturbing hearing some of the details about prison life sometimes. >> absolutely. kerry sanders, thank you so much. we still don't know exactly what happened in upstate new york but joyce mitchell did say, quote, she thought it was love with one of the escaped convicts. >> a lot of people are now interested about what happened behind the walls. coming up on trending meet the little girl who was meeting with the queen and did not go quite the way she expected. plus -- >> we're flying in formation with the team off the coast of connecticut in an l-39 aircraft. it will be a heck of a ride coming up on the "today" show.

. good morning. 7:56 right now i'm kris sanchez. san francisco police are releasing new surveillance video of this terrifying armed robbery at a convenience store last month. it happened in the early morning hours of may 19th on a shell station -- at a shell situation on harrison street south of market. the two gunmen went into the market and instead of taking money they went after the clerk with their gun. the clerk ran for his life police say the gunmen followed him and fired several shots as he ran but thankfully they missed. if you have to get around tomorrow be aware bart trains will not run between the fruitvale station and coliseum station all day long. tracks are going to be worked on for a maintenance project, however, bart plans to run buses between the two stations and service should resume sunday morning well ahead of sunday night's game at oracle arena. the warriors hopefully going to win that one. meteorologist kari hall is here with a look at the forecast

into this area over the last couple of days, but so far, their search has turned up nothing. investigators saying they are also looking into joyce mitchell. she's the 51-year-old prison insider who may have been working with those suspects those inmates, to break out of prison. police say she is a person of interest and she is still being questioned. natalie? >> all right, miguel almaguer in dannemora, new york. thank you. meanwhile, the prison worker suspected of playing a role in the escape may have had personal relationships with both of the missing murderers. sources had earlier told nbc news that joyce mitchell thought she was in love with richard matt. now the "wall street journal's" reporting that prison officials believed mitchell was also getting too close to convicted cop killer david sweat. an investigation did not find enough evidence to discipline mitchell back then but sweat was moved out of the prison tailor shop where mitchell taught. a rhode island man is in custody this morning, facing charges related to a plot to attack police officers in boston. overnight, the fbi arrested

24-year-old nicholas robinski. police and the fbi searched his home for several days last week. he's the second person who officials say was aware of plans by a boston man, usaama rahim, to carry out attacks with knives. rahim was shot to death last week by boston police and fbi agents who sought to question him. an explosion that was caught on camera has taken the life of a woman who was managing her parents' coffee shop while they were on vacation. patrons are seen running after a car plowed into the cafe. its bumper punctured containers of flammable gas, setting off a fireball. police say the driver of the car may have suffered a heart attack behind the wheel. a great white shark did something nobody expected after circling a fishing boat off the coast of new zealand. the predator then opened its jaws and tried to chomp down on the boat's outboard motor. good way to chip a tooth there, but the fisherman says the shark

celebration early with a remarkable family helping their dad achieve what seemed like an impossible dream. erica hill is here with that story. hello, erica. >> hi nice to see you. i love this story, full disclosure. the grand canyon is on the bucket list for a lot of people but for the headings family, that took on new meaning as they tackled the trail as a team carrying their father 7 1/2 miles down on the adventure of a lifetime. there are trails in life that lead to a clear destination. for the headings family of columbus ohio the destination on this trail through grand canyon was always the journey. >> i didn't hesitate. i mean i said i'm ready to go. >> reporter: getting bob headings there wouldn't be easy. >> we're bringing my paralyzed grandpa down the grand canyon. >> reporter: paralyzed from the waist down after a fall nearly ten years ago. >> that ladder shifted, i lost my balance, and i knew right then i was paralyzed because i couldn't feel my legs.

i'm ... ==topvo== facing the threat of eviction - tenants are a good friday morning. it's 8:26. i'm sam brock. facing the threat of eviction tenants right now are demanding action. last night in redwood city 20 families who recently received eviction notices held a protest. they live in an apartment building on clinton street in redwood city that the landlords now want to renovate. they were sent notices to move by the end of the month, offering them their full security deposit back plus $500. tenants argue they'll have to move far away and be priced out of the market. our calls to the company were not returned. as you get ready to start out your friday morning commute, a couple trouble spots. let's check in with mike. >> good morning. we'll take you over here southbound 101 at marsh road. reports of a motorcycle down. just your fast lane is blocked.

>> i'm out of breath. can you pull this off a dollar store? >> yes, you can. we're doing $5 meals. five ingredients dishes. i say, okay when you're in the middle of little towns like i am in washington louisiana, you may not have a supermarket close enough that is really great. but you always have a dollar store, no matter where you are in the united states. >> that's true. >> so this is my goal. i'm going to give you five ingredients, $5 and you can literally make it in five minutes. five, five, five. so the first thing, you want to make sure you make the raman noodles, frozen vegetables. i like frozen vegetables -- frozen gets a bad rap. frozen you get the strong flavors in there, all the nutrients are optimum. so as long as you read the back of the bag and make sure that it's the only ingredient. >> okay. >> that's it. put some garlic over here.

so working with their parents, we brought teenagers to this party space for what they thought was going to be a focus group. but we mixed in with them some actors who with hidden cameras rolling portrayed a scenario where a boy appears to take advantage of a girl and pretended to have have ruffied her drinking. of course this is all a setup to see how the kids would react in this difficult situation. would they speak up. so watch as one of the girls, fiona, seems to be catching on to the situation. >> are you guys from new jersey? >> i am. >> they're chatting away tasting drinks when -- fiona seems to be the only one who notices our actor taking something out of his pocket and pouring it into his drink. >> what is that? >> nothing. something just to liven things up. i'm so bored right now. >> and when the actor goes to share his tainted drink, fiona starts acting questions. >> good right? >> excuse me wait.

taking a look at the headlines. the hunt for two killers who escaped from a new york state prison is now into its seventh day. hundreds of police officers spent the night searching woods near the prison. meantime a district attorney says prison sewing teacher joyce mitchell had been investigated recently for her close relationship with fugitive david sweat. but there was not enough evidence to discipline her. officials said earlier that mitchell who is suspected of aiding the escape plan thought she was in love with the other fugitive richard matt. german prosecutors say there is evidence the co pilot who crashed a germanwings flight also explored alternate means of suicide. the prosecutor confirmed a report in a german newspaper that says that andreas lubitz researched how to obtain deadly drugs and the possibility of a

living will. the crash killed all 150 people on board. new research found post menopausal women who are overweight or obese have an increased risk of invasive breast cancer. the study followed more than 60,000 older women for over a decade. the most obese women were 58% more likely to develop invasive breast cancer than their normal weight peers. normal weight women who gained more than 5% of their body weight during the study also had an increased risk of breast cancer. parents, listen up. more than half of kids and teens aren't drinking enough water. this is according to a new harvard study. data from over 4,000 children showed nearly a quarter of the children in the study reported drinking no plain water at all. inadequate hydration has been linked to headaches, as well as poor physical and cognitive performance. mortgage rates are on the rise. the average rate on a 30-year fixed topped 4% this week for the first time since last october. banks typically link mortgage rates to yield on treasury
