in heyward to clean up after a deadly crash. it happened just before 6:00 this morning south of tennyson road. it's unclear at this point how many cars were involved but we do know someone died. the chp plans to reopen the road around 8:30. we have a developing story, a look at great america. this is actually the ride being investigated after an employee and amusement park guest were injured. it happened around 8:00 last night as the inverted roller coaster called the flight deck. witnesses say a maintenance worker was walking along the track when he was hit by the roller coaster when he was hit. >> he was walking on the track and the train hit him. >> hu do you know he was maintenance then staff? >> he had the maintenance shirt. he was bleeding from his head. it was really scary. >> the ride was shut down while

crews tended to that man. we're told he's still in the hospital with a traumatic head injury. a guest of the park was also injured and taken to the park with a hand injury. park officials say there's no reason to believe the ride malfunctioned but they did shut it down as a precautionary measure. this is breaking news out of texas this morning. a shoot-out and explosion outside dallas police headquarters. less than 30 minutes ago, dallas police announced they believe they have killed the spent. it started when the suspect fired on the headquarters electric different locations and then he took off in an armored vehicle, rammed the police cruiser on his way out. officers chased the vehicle to a jack in the box parking lot and got into another shoot-out with that suspect. now they believe the suspect has been shot by a sniper but they are waiting for a bomb squad to clear the van but they approach it. the police chief says he thinks

the suspect left a bag full of pipe bombs near the headquarters as well. >> some officers say we're very lucky. i believe we're blessed that our officers survived this ordeal. there are bullet holes in squad cars where officers were sitting. there are bullet holes in the front lobby where our staff was sitting. >> we are told the suspect gave a name to officers, but dallas police haven't confirmed that identity. the fbi has been called in to investigate. authorities back here in the bay area are looking into the safety policies of a popular science camp for peninsula and south bay students after a former camp counselor was arrested. the santa clara county office of education is organizing a special task force to investigate the safety procedures at walden west science camp. this is video from our exclusive interview with former camp

counselor, who currently faces child pornography and molestation charges. last week his alleged victims' families filed suit against walden west. he'll be back in court to enter his plea. in the midst of historic drought nudist camp south of los gatos accused of stealing water. lupin lodge accused of illegally sucking water from nearby creek. the lodge owner lori stout says the creek runs through the property and the water rights are grandfathered in. she calls the water fight biased. >> it's very one-sided. we have lots of questions of we've been here since 1935 and we're getting ready to celebrate our 80th birthday. we've been good neighbors. >> the county says taking water out of any extreme without the rights is considered theft. a twist in the san jose home invasion robbery. the person accused of the crime is the family's taunlg son,

simerjeet singh. back in may two men because the on camera breaking in, grabbing knives and trying to kick down the door where the family members were hiding inside. neighbors were shocked to hear the family's own son was accused of planning the entire thing. prosecutors say he convinced gang members from school to carry out the attack. >> teenagers make terrible decisions, and i don't think it's something that should be haunting them the rest of their life. investigators say singh didn't live at the home and wasn't there during the home invasion but he is responsible for planning it. along with singh, three other people were arrested including two teens and they are all being tried as adults. activists calling for release of the name of the oakland police officers who shot and killed a man last saturday morning. occupy oakland gave us these pictures of last night's peaceful march. it began at lakeshore and headache park avenue. that's near the spot where

demouria hogg was shot and killed. demonstrators wasn't police to release the name of the officer who shot hogg and for the state attorney general to investigate the shooting. police tell us the officer was forced to shoot hogg after hogg reportedly reached for a handgun on the seat of his car during a standoff last saturday. a heads up if you're traveling through oakland on bart today. trains will not run between fruitvale and coliseum stations. b.a.r.t. will provide free shuttle buses between the stations. crews working to elevate tracks. they are way ahead of schedule. in fact, this will be the last closure needed. b.a.r.t.'s keblgter will run as usual. >> get ready for game five. oracle arena packed tomorrow night for nba finals between our warriors, of course, and cleveland cavaliers.

we hope for a certain outcome. win or lose, no one knows how fans might react. oakland city leaders know crowds can be unpredictable so they are planning ahead for the best and worst case scenario. according to a staff memo, they will open an emergency operation center on possible final game days. the city is reaching out to nearby police agencies in case they need back-up and they have also rescheduled tuesday night's city council meeting so police can focus. >> a really crowded meeting with controversial agenda items. generally some police officers are attending the meeting or on call right next door in a side room. so that will cause them to have this competition. so you don't want that when a potential celebration that could go iffy. >> so that council meeting will be instead held on wednesday. business owners who have been vandalized by protesters in the past say they are happy to hear the city is making contingency plans. no matter the outcome of game five, the warriors head

a live look at sunny skies over san jose. temperatures will be hot near the 90s in parts of the bay area today. the salmon institute is popular, a popular salmon rearing project but it's being kicked out of san francisco state as state owned marin county property. it says it's making the cut over safety concern. mark chris matthews explains the controversial decision. >> reporter: the tim arron institute raise salmon until fish are big enough to be released into the bay. something more than 1,000 children participate in every year. >> every salmon that goes up sacramento has to go past here. that's our teaching model, salmon highway. >> he's been part of this salmon program going back to 1973. but this one, he got an eviction ler from san francisco state giving them until the end of the month to get oft property. >> at the university, we have to follow various policies and

out, temperatures near 70 at the coast. a number of purple slimy creatures washing up on shore and scaring beachgoers. scientists say unusually warm ocean water may be to claim. we hit the beach to find out what they are. >> there's an uneasy feeling on east bay beaches. purple blobs invading, frightening beachgoers. >> i've been here a couple of times, never saw anything coup quite like that it was interesting. >> angela spotted one along the beach. >> looks like an organ. >> in fact, someone called the police thinking the animal was a human heart. they are a type of sea slug. >> they are gross looking for sure. when you find them, they are just a jelly like blob. often they are inking purple out of them. >> in a video on youtube you see how they swim. it looks like they have long

investigate. let's talk about this forecast we're looking at this morning. we have clouds in the bay area, fog, the marine layer is back. a weak, shallow marine layer so we're starting to see some clearing. this is what you need to know for your week. this is what we're talking about. patchy coastal fog, today and tomorrow. mainly clear skies by this afternoon and it is going to be hot. we're talking our warmest locations, livermore, tri-valley, places there near 100 degrees today. tomorrow some cooling but it's not going to be a big cooldown. we're talking about temperatures coming out of the 90s back into the 80s. all relative here. right now you can see we're looking at clouds across south bay, mentioned san francisco, peninsula, clouds burning off here. temperatures really mild this morning in the 50s and 60s. look at this, this is what i was talking about. this is why you need the extra bottle of water, sunscreen and shades with all the sunshine. 92 for south bay, 78 for peninsula, 80 for east bay and 73 for san francisco. our warm spot today will be the

north bay at 93 and also the tri-valley expecting to be near 100 degrees. that's going to be our hot spot without a doubt. now, as we move to the next few days, we are talking about cooler temperatures. but we can't leave you without things we like to show you happening across the bay. north beach festival happening in san francisco both today and tomorrow. temperatures here are really comfortable, back into the upper 60s. now, let's talk about the real beach. this is where you want to go to get away from the heat. expecting temperatures in the 60s. it's not going to be overly warm everywhere. expecting cool conditions against the coastline. half moon bay, 71 degrees. very comfortable there. temperatures got close to 80 in santa cruz, coming down just a little bit but still comfortable conditions. 75 degrees here. picture perfect out in santa cruz later on today. now, we have a big area of high pressure. we have one across the pacific. we also have another one across four corners region. both of those kept the storm door completely shut. the rain we had earlier, it came from the tropics, hurricane

blanca, remnants of that. also tracking another one, tropical storm carlos. it's high pressure in control. tomorrow executiving cooler conditions, on shore wind refs up, sea breeze takes over as we head to monday. temperatures out of the 90s, coastline out of the 70s back into the 60s. again, it's all relative. we are expecting a cooling trend. sunday and monday we'll notice that. a hot day for inland valleys, 86 for san jose. 97 meanwhile across the tri-valley. tomorrow, look at this, back into the 80s and san jose by monday we're back into the 70s. san francisco, can't forget about you guys, look at this. 73. tomorrow and monday, kyra, we're expecting temperatures to go back into the 60s. at least we have cooler weather headed our way. of course if you're doing any traveling towards cabo, we have another tropical storm carlos making its way up to puerto

something to give them in return. in lori's case, much more meaningful as well. >> come over here, some cookies for you. >> up until a few years ago, laura, like the rest of us, never imagined it could be possible to miss someone who was sitting right across from her. but then her mom, sharon, only in her mid-50s at the time was diagnosed with alzheimer's. sharon now doesn't recognize laura, her husband john, or any other member of her family. >> there's your granddaughter. there's a picture of your granddaughter. look at her red hair. look how cute she is. >> i feel so like awkward around her, which is really hard for me, because this is the woman that used football my best friend in the whole world. >> if laura couldn't feel close to her mother when she was with her, she wondered if she could ever feel that connection again.

laura did find a way. enall places, this box. it holds a collection of recipes given to sharon and john on their wedding day. one recipe in particular always more special to laura than the others. >> i have a lot of memories of being in the kitchen, rolling out the snicker doodle dough with her. yeah, we made them together a lot. >> so laura started baking those snicker doodles and baking and baking and bayinging. so many, in fact, she began selling gift boxes of three dozen for $25, 100% of the money donated to the walk to end alzheimer's. whole weekends are now dedicated in laura's apartment to nothing but snicker doodle baking. and in just three years, laura has baked more than 15,000 cookies and raised more than $15,000. all by herself but never alone. >> heat up the oven and i pop

instead jerry brown is pushing to put as much as he can into a rainy day fund. he says he's convinced another recession is right around the corner. while some critics are wondering if the governor knows something he isn't revealing, others say he's merely looking at history to prepare for the future. that's a sentiment brown himself emphasized yesterday. >> the idea that we get a little money for a lot of money for a few years that now you've reached utopia is so demonstrabley false as evidenced by the last several years. we have to learn from history and not keeping repeating the mistakes. california averages one boom and one downturn every decade. experts say the current surplus would be quickly wiped out by another major recession. cal fire has been ramping up for what's expected to be a historic fire season. a long and dangerous summer is expected. so one of cal fire's elite air attack units is passing on its knowledge to our local fire

"today in the bay" has the story. >> california fire's unit can matt make difficult rescues look somewhat simple, lower a firefighter to the ground, hoisting a victim to safety. >> real simple. has these little clips. >> today cal fire was training firefighters from santa clara county, gilroy and morgan hill on how to coordinate with the air unit on the ground. >> they are integral to all the urban airspace fires. so for us to understand as suburban firefighting, work with them, understand their operations, understand their capabilities. >> a different situation that we may be able to utilize in remote areas hikers or mountain bikers that are injured or vehicle accidents where there may be steep areas that are difficult to retrieve patients out of.

the money is part of a $110 million aid package for seven western states to help reduce the threat of wildfires and secure crop insurance. now to a developing story from prisoner employee to prisoner herself. last night the suspected accomplice in the new york prison break was arraigned in court. 51-year-old joyce mitchell pleaded not guilty to helping the two convicted killers escape. mitchell was a supervisor at the prison tailor shop where she met david sweat and richard matt. they escaped and haven't been seen since. officers searching three miles from the prison where canine dog picked up the men's scent. investigators say she provided materials and support to david sweat and richard matt. >> this is one large piece of the puzzle in our quest to find escaped murderers. >> there are reports mitchell was supposed to drive the

getaway car after they escaped. but as the plan started to unfold, she backed out. did she lie and does the color of her skin really matter? this morning naacp is standing by one of its leaders. 37-year-old rachel heads to naacp chapter of washington, d.c. she says she's partially african-american. but her estranged parents say she's caucasian. her mom and dad are both white. a president of chapter said they had caucasian leaders before and race is not an issue. >> that she's sincere about what she's doing, you know, that's all that mattered to me. whether she was black or white, it was hard to determine because this is the most biracial and interracial community i've ever been in. >> she also is being investigated by the city of spokane for saying she was african-american while applying for a commission with the police board.

naacp's official response, racial identity is not a qualifying criteria for leadership. new this morning, "full house"'s uncle jesse in a jam after being arrested for dui. they pulled over stamos for driving erratically in beverly hills. this was last night. they thought he was having some sort of medical condition so they took him to the hospital. but police say he was just drunk. he was given a citation for driving under the influence and released to the care of the hospital. he is due in court in september. all right. we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up both the giants and the a's had tough nights. we have an update on the mother who was seriously injured during an a's game last week. livepix take a live look

some good news to pass along this morning. the woman who was hit by a broken bat during an a's game is recovering at a rehabilitation center. we first reported this story last friday night. 44-year-old tonya carpenter was sitting along the third-base line at boston fenway park when a broken bat hit her in the head. brett rory at the plate. her injuries were life threatening. she was released from a boston hospital yesterday and is said to be getting stronger every day. we are so glad to know that. we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, happiness on two wheels. why an east bay man says building bikes for kids gives him so much joy. yes. the boston native, boston strong. that's the only thing. all right. let's look at this fog in san francisco. you can see it's pretty extensive. we are going to see sunshine and very warm temperatures later on. we'll talk about that coming up.

"today in the bay" caught up with one oakland man proofing real happiness comes with two wheels. >> there is no bicycle more memorable than your first. paul broun remembers his. it was a christmas gift from his mom. >> stayed up all year long. i went down in the basement and took the bike apart. >> as a child brown dreamed of bike change and fancy rims. >> i wanted to have the baddest bike that the world.

>> nearly six decades later, at least that part of brown's life is still the same. >> i just love bikes, man. >> there's nothing regular or understated about the bicycles brown builds. >> one of my favorite colors is gold. i love gold. i don't know why. i used to have some gold teeth. >> reporter: in the early days when brown wasn't behind the handlebars he was behind the wheel, 20 years driving trucks and greyhound buses. >> one day i was coming from new york. i got back down here and i was like, i don't want to do this no more. so his bikes shine with flashes of gold and jewel. brown now leads a much humbler life living in a beat up rv in an industrial neighborhood in oakland. >> i live day by day. >> he's known as call paul survives by recycling. >> i walk to emeryville, collect cardboard sometimes. >> reporter: bringing leftovers for scrap. >> whenever i can help him out,

i try to. >> reporter: mostly profits go into the bicycles. >> paint, supplies, that's the main thing in my life. when i go somewhere i go on this bike right here, pop a little wheelie. >> reporter: tall paul's bikes are legendary around the neighborhood. >> people stop and take pictures. >> that's the number one question, how do you get on and off the bicycle. >> reporter: these days brown has become known for something else. >> i'm trying to get a bike together to take it up to the school. >> reporter: he skild a bike for a pair of kids who showed him good report cards. instead of making bikes for himself, brown shifted gears. now he makes his bikes to inspire other kids. >> any little kid, black, white, spanish, doesn't matter what he is, if they got more than three as i pump their bike for-free. >> who needs a new bike when paul can pimp out another bike

volunteer catherine becker is here with paprika. she is ready for a new welcome back. special guest from pets in need, here with paprika, who will be ready for a new home, up for adoption in about two weeks. we have a special story with

paprika. her mom was pregnant. you rescued her. she gave birth. paprika was the runt of the litter. >> she was absolutely the runt. during her initial exam everything it was found she had pda. it's a heart condition. that eventually lead to heart failure and death. >> you were able to treat it. you mentioned, a no kill shelter, first in california, you're committed to keeping them safe and healthy. you went ahead and gave her the heart surgery she needed. you called in a special surgeon. >> we did. we called in a special surgeon using our second chance funds all based on public donations. some more of the exceptional cases, heart surgery for paprika. she underwent surgery. unfortunately during surgery her heart stopped and she stopped breathing but the vets were able to revive her. she's full of life and spunky now and ready for a new home.
