mitchell the prison employee who is now in jail accused of smuggling tools into the prison helping the murderers burst out of the maximum security facility. >> three of them were going to move on? >> the three of them were going to move on together. that was the plan. >> reporter: andrew wily the district attorney says mitchell sweat and matt developed a close, unusual relationship while working together behind prison walls in the tailor shop. the d.a. says mitchell was to pick up then mates at this power plant, be the getaway driver and never go home. was her thought process to help them escape and essentially go on the run and move on with them? >> it appeared that way. it appeared that way, based on her statements. and i think at the last moment she bailed out. >> reporter: mitchell who pled not guilty could be sentenced up to seven years in prison but experts say she faces even more time. >> matt and sweat, if they kill police officer, innocent civilians, you know aiding and abetting could be looked at

seriously. >> reporter: police say matt and sweat are desperate, and could easily kill again. neither are believed to be experienced outdoors machine, but if authorities are right and they're in the forest they have evaded detection, beating police and the elements for more than a week. still, investigators remain confident they're closing in. >> just a matter of time. these guys will make a mistake okay, they're fatigued possibly low or out of provisions food et cetera. >> reporter: this morning, the clock is ticking. two killers on the run and a prison employee behind bars. the d.a. says mitchell's unusual relationship began with the inmates in 2013. he says they planned to drive seven hours together in an unknown direction, but that mitchell got cold feet because she didn't want to hurt her husband. erica? >> miguel almaguer thanks. police in dallas say they're lucky to be alive after a lone gunman went on a ram pain with

automatic weapons and pipe bombs. new details what set him off. that story from charles had lock. >> reporter: police say they have never seen anything like it. a brazen attack on police headquarters overnight saturday. by a man driving an armored vehicle loaded with automatic weapons and pipe bombs. >> we're being shot at the headquarters. >> reporter: the bullets whizing by bystanders running for their lives. the armored vehicle rammed several patrol cars before speeding away with police in pursuit. >> he's explosives. >> reporter: the chase ended in a jack-in-the-box parking lot. the gunman 35-year-old james bullwear of dallas was upset over a child custody case. a police sniper shot the engine disabling the vehicle, and

later, after police say negotiations had failed they fired through the windshield killing him. his father said his son had a history of mental illness, and blamed police for losing custody of his son. >> every one of us has a breaking point. some is one point, some is another. but we are allowed one. >> reporter: jim says his son bought the armored van last week planning to live in. instead, it's where he died surrounded by more pipe bombs, police believe he intended to use on them. turning now to a crazy scene unfolding overseas in the country of georgia. after raging floods destroyed gates at a zoo, sending wild animals roaming the streets. nbc's kelly cobiella has the latest for us. good morning. >> floodwaters rose so fast overnight, all they could do was run. the city this morning is covered in mud and debris and to make

matters worse, rescues are having to be on guard against zoo animals, tigers bears, wolves as they look for survivors. >> reporter: it's a safari on city streets. a hippo looking for food a bear with nowhere else to climb. and on georgian television a big cat, clearly stunned and covered in mud, is roaming free. dangerous floods from the river via washed over the capital overnight, filling the streets with mud and debris washing away houses and cars trapping people in the water and destroying zoo enclosures like this one for the bears. this woman said the floods came so fast she ran. in 20 years, i've never seen anything like it. local officials said the damage is in the millions of dollars. this morning, the city is warning residents to stay away from the mud-filled streets while the zoo animals are hunted

down. there were six lions, six tigers three bears, and 18 wolves at the zoo. more than 30 animals escaped. >> we couldn't rescue all of them unfortunately, and special forces had to kill them unfortunately. >> reporter: some captured like this hippo, cornered shot with a train qullizer dart and moved to a safe place. a spokesperson says it's difficult to know how many animals are alive and roaming the city. they're trying to save as many as they can. three zoo workers were killed in those floods over night. and the zoo director is calling this an unbelievable tragedy. >> terrible. >> that it is. scary, too. this morning, new information about a true nightmare for air travelers left stranded for nearly a day. francis is here with more on that. >> a nightmare for hundred of the united airline passengers. they are fuming claiming they were abandoned by the airline crew after an emergency landing at a remote part of canada.

flight 958 from chicago to london had to land friday for a maintenance issue. that's when passengers say they were forced to spend the night in a freezing army barracks. they described no heat few blankets and no food for hours. the result of no contact with the crew described as staying in a comfy hotel. the spokesman says the plane was forced to land and customers were accommodated and all will receive refunds. what was your typical wedding reception at new york's waldorf hisser to rea, police rushed to the scene after reports of a shooting to discover a gun carried by a guest just gone off as pictures were being taken. the bullet hit one woman. four others were injured by glass and flying debris. all treated. no word on whether the gun-packing guest will face charges. a frightening accident canceled a concert in mid show. he good too close. watch here the pyrotechnics saturday in london, look his

the precious goal you leave it -- >> i'm sure he was replaying that in his head all night long. >> even now. >> i know. >> great series. >> all right. thanks. dylan is here with a check of the weather on this sunday morning. >> good morning. tropics getting more active out there today. we've got hurricane carlos in the pacific. that's this storm system out here it is right now just a weak category i hurricane. near acapulco. this is going to affect resorts on the west coast of mexico. we have this fancier storm, invest 91l and hurricane hunters are going out later on this afternoon and investigate this area of low pressure. a 60% chance that it could develop into tropical storm bill as we go into tuesday. here's where a lot of the computer models are taking it right into southern parts of texas, like houston, where we could end up with 4 to 7 inches of rain. this is an area that is already soaking wet because of previous flooding. we do have to keep an eye on that storm and either way, if it

ideas, and many times during the speech yesterday, it sounded like almost a retelling of president obama's previous two state of the unions. the subtle message to me was it this if you like president obama's ideas and you're a progressive, you're going to like me and what i'm going to be able to do that he can't do is i'm sort of an implementer i know how to get things done. i'll breakthrough washington. >> that's on one side. as we know jeb bush of course officially launching his campaign tomorrow. set the scene for what he needs to do. he's joining, as we know a large field of contenders on the republican side. a number of them were in utah over the weekend meeting with romney in many ways is emerged as king maker for the republican party. how did he end up in the role. what is he looking for in a candidate? >> he wants a candidate that can win. i think that's clear. he's wanting to play the role. it is interesting yesterday he did a powerpoint presentation to the donors and candidates. it was all about foreign policy.

good morning. take a live look outside [adlib] vicky/2shot i'm vky good morning. your time is 6:26. we want to give you a live look outside this sunday morning. that's the bay bridge there, looking nice in san francisco. i am vicky nguyen with anthony slaughter. you're saying it will be cooler today? >> 80s 90s, no triple digits. it has been hot the past couple days. temperatures are coming down. san jose starts off clear in the south bay and parts of the tri-valley. elsewhere we have some cloud cover. that will intensify through the day tomorrow. today is another bright day, cooler and all relative.

warm, in the low 80s for the south bay, 82 degrees there, peninsula 75 degrees, san francisco, 70s today. 70s and 80s for inland valleys. we have the first tropical system of the atlantic forming. we will talk about that at 7:00. >> sounds good thank you. a desperate search is over in the south bay. an 18 month old toddler taken from his home is safe. the search started in sunnydale and ended on ash street in newark. the 18 month old was taken from his grandmother by his mother. she does not have custody of the child and did not know he needed potentially life-saving medicine twice a day. six hours later, police tracked down the mother in a red cadillac in newark and she was arrested. the child wasn't hurt but was taken to the hospital as precaution. it is unclear at this point why

his mother the 20-year-old, christina rodriguez, took the boy. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fire in the east bay that kept firefighters busy all day. the fire started near creekview drive, not far from i-80. they called for backup several times as dry and windy conditions kept that fire going for 11 hours. embers blew onto the roof of a nearby home, causing some damage. neighbors say as soon as they noticed something was wrong, they helped each other out. >> the neighbor he was so nice went from house to house and knocked at each door to make sure everybody is out. >> firefighters left after they thought they knocked the fire down only to find it smoldering again hours later. it burned five acres an all, fortunately no one was hurt. san jose wants more women on the force. more than 100 people answered the call this weekend.

they showed up to a seminar put on by san jose police department, meant to introduce women to life as a police officer. the women got a chance to do a mock interview and went through some of the physical fitness tests that all officers must pass. the department says currently has 88 women on the force. that's the lowest number since 1993. coming up at 7:00 on today in the bay, we will get you ready for the all important game five of the nba finals tonight, the winner between warriors and cavs one step closer to history. and anthony will be back with a check of the forecast. for now, back to the "today" show.
