arrest in newark saturday night after allegedly taking the toddler without permission earlier that day. 20-year-old christina rodriguez does not have custody of the boy and investigators say she did not know he was on medication that needed to be taken twice daily. okay. a popular ride at great hearing theme park remains closed today while authorities investigate an accident that left an employee in critical condition. this happened on the flight deck roller coaster friday afternoon. investigators say that an employee reached down to pick up a cell phone that someone had dropped on the tracks when he was hit by a heavy steel train. a guest also suffered a hand injury in that incident. investigators say it does not appear that the ride malfunctioned happening today, it's a rare thing in california, state lawmakers say they have a balanced budget to send to governor injuriy brown today. that's because of an $8 billion surplus over this past fiscal year, but it may not be cause for celebration. nbc bay area political analyst larry gersten says state leaders deserve credit for managing the

sanchez live for us. >> reporter: we have gas for $3.03 here and with that it had had l. make that drive from the south bay to maybe gilroy gardens or the san francisco zoo, maybe the awake yum more comfortable. we can tell you that it is cheaper here in san jose than -- rather where we are than in the rest of san jose. the average for a gallon of gas into err in san jose is $3.44, san francisco $3.60 and oakland $3.46 according to aaa. now, our price right side down here in the blair and in the state for that matter, gas cheaper by 7 cents last week and down a quarter over last month, but overall across the nation gas is starting to inch up and the leading gas analyst says it is a slow hike this time around. prices were higher for the last major holiday weekend in which we drive, which is memorial day, but could stay lower for the

tri-valley and also the south bay, 83 degrees today, the peninsula 75. overall a beautiful day, so at this point we do need some rain so we've been watching the tropics to see what's going on out there. now we have tropical storm carlos and it looks like over the next couple of days this this may turn inland into port toe voralto. it looks like it misses out on our area and heads off to the east. we'll take a look at the rest of the microclimate forecast farther down the line. in fact, it just heats up. i'll talk more about that in a minute. right now let's check in with mike. looking over here it just gets more crowded i guess we have our own battles here. this is the bay bridge and right now very easy drive, you see a little glow for those lights, a little moisture in the air, visibility is just fine. we're talking about either side of that bridge, highway 24 westbound around fish -- just outside -- there was a report of a mattress in the lane, saw a little slowing there.

i think it's clear though, the giants game is not until this evening but keep that in mind for post work traffic. westbound 580 had a little slowing at the dublin interchange, a few more cars hit the road. not many cars on the road, it's 5:10 this morning, easy flow through the south bay. right over here south of 84, palo alto, let me give you a zoom in shot, this is the area that he had with the jam last week. right there there's that sign that says slow down, lane shift for highway 101 between university and embarcadero. it's part of the san francis bridge project. it's just a little stretch of roadway, but nonetheless, that's what it is, it's a bridge. >> you must have laser vision to be able to read that sign by your side there. you talk about bridges and demolition is going to start on a bridge damaged by a quake in napa last month which is now coming down. you can see the damage in this video, cracks on the oakville cross bridge, it's been shut down since it was damaged during may's 4.1 magnitude quake that

belmokhtar was killed in the attack but the pentagon says it's still assessing the results of the investigation and cannot confirm his death at this time. now to a developing story, five lions, three tigers and one jaguar are still on the loose in tabalisi, georgia. the animals escaped when flooding destroyed their enclosures. an escaped hippo was cornered had in one of the city's main squares and shot with a drank lieser gun. this is new video of people helping that hippo home after it had been subdued. so far 12 people have died, but officials say none of them were killed by the animals. >> almost amaze to go see there. 5:15 two teenagers seriously injured after two separate shark attacks in north carolina. both attacks happened offer oak island. a 13-year-old girl lost part of her arm and was also injured in the leg. about an hour later a 16-year-old boy was bitten, also losing an arm. both were airlifted to a

bites. police have not said what prompted the 911 call. the man accused of sexually assaulting a san jose girl in her own home is set to center a plea in court today. this is surveillance video of last month's attack. police say moemd khaliqi followed the 13-year-old home forcing his way inside and attacked her. he is also accused of skrieg to sexual assault a woman in a grocery store restroom back in april. sources tell nbc bay area that khaliqi confessed to both crimes but the da has not confirmed or denied that. in foster city police are investigating an attempted murder suicide happening on saturday night. police and firefighters sounded to an emergency medical call and found an elderly woman dead and elderly man bleeding neck to her. investigators say it appears that the men killed the woman and then stabbed himself several times. that man is currently being treated at the hospital. we're also learning new details about a kidnapping in sunnyva sunnyvale, an 18 month old victim spent the night in the

john daily boulevard from southbound 280. that's the scene where chp reported sounds like a big rig might have hit a branch, there's some wood debris in the area. i don't see a lot of slowing, be careful a little activity there as folks do head into the city and toward 19th which is a major off ramp or major cross through through the city itself. we're watching the rest of the peninsula. an easy drive. it's so early for that side of the bay. we're starting to see folks head over 92 and south bay easy drive, just your build through the tri-valley. being patriotic and saving water at the same time, san jose couple dealing with the drought but celebrating flag day in a creative way. dan and claudia decker had to let their lawn go brown conserve water but they didn't like how it looks. they wasn't painted an american flag on it in honor of flag day yesterday. they're also looking into what

airstrike against a senior al qaeda militant in libya. the pentagon sayse international news now, the u.s. military launched an air strike against a senior al qaeda militant in libya. the pentagon says he was responsible for a series of attacks in algeria dating back to 2013 which killed at least 38 people, including three americans. libya's government released a statement saying pock tar belmokhtar was killed in that attack but the pentagon says it's still assessing the results of the operation and it cannot confirm his death. meantime, happening today jeb bush is going to finally announce that he's going to run for president in a few short hours. a lot of people expecting this, but he's going to face an uphill battle in a crowded republican peeled. >> "today in the bay" edward lawrence live in washington, d.c. with a preview of his announcement. >> reporter: right now former governor of florida jeb bush is preparing for that announcement. he plans to stress growing the

we get a look at those temperatures as you walk out the door, 55 degrees in the east bay, also 55 degrees for the south bay. you can see that seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen and it just goes up and up and up each day as we get crowser to the weekend. mortgage bay right now 53 degrees, but as i take you closer to the south bay, downtown san jose, it's 58 degrees, 57 degrees for sara towing fwa and almaden at 56 degrees. as we look at those temperatures in the 50s we're heading up into the upper 80s today in los gatos, redwood city today 78 degrees, at&t park 67 degrees there. of course, the giants game going

on and it will be cooling back into the mid 60s by first pitch. lafayette today 79 degrees, but hot in the tri-valley, this is what's going on, we have a northwesterly wind and it starts to pick up as we go through the day. when we know we have a northerly wind that starts to heat up, but then the on shore below kicks in this afternoon. we can tell by the shift in the direction of these wind arrows that it brings in a little bit of some cooler air and this evening it looks much better. this is the way it looks over the next 24 hours, not a whole lot happening here, and there will be some drizzle, some low clouds this morning and then it parts to give us some sunshine this afternoon, but all sunny for the tri-valley. into the weekend as we look forward start to see some high pressure moving in, gives us sinking air, clear skies and heats things up in the valleys, the 90s return and i wouldn't be surprised if we even hit 100 degrees. maybe for this weekend summer

officially starts on sum sunday you want to head to the beach. let's check in with mike. first of all, we have your typical build west 580, that's one of your biggest slow spots in the morning right now about this time and we're seeing the dublin interchange slowing. more folks head south through sunol. southbound 680 reports of somebody having called chp and they said wood flew up, hit them in the windshield. the other incident involving wood is over in the peninsula. there may be slowing at the scene as chp arrives to help that person out. mean while, no injuries reported, a little bit of a build for north 101 through san jose is. the rest of the peninsula, patch that slowing the pally jam between university and embarcadero. over here that's the second incident with the wood involved. sounds like a big rig might have had hit a branch and so there's wood debris there as well as a about i go rig on the shoulder.
