is expected to take place at an event this afternoon. that makes it a total of ten republican challengers in the field of presidential contenders. the nation's two most prominent democrats will be in the bay area this week, both hillary clinton and president obama will come searching for campaign cash. on friday the president will speak at the annual meeting of the u.s. conference of mayors in san francisco. he will then go to a couple of fund razors for the dnc. the president leaves on saturday about the same time clinton comes in for a fund raising brunch in san francisco. from politics to policing. this morning a san francisco police officer is recovering from dog bites. an attack so vicious police say he was forced to open fire, killing a dog. this all went down outside of a home in the city's bayview neighborhood. officers received a 911 call and as they approached the house a dog attacked one of the officers. that officer hot and killed the dog to stop the attack. the officer went to the hospital with multiple bites. we are also learning new details

about a kidnapping in sunnyvale, the 18 month old victim spent the night in the hospital and reportedly is doing fine this morning. this is video of his mom's arrest in newark saturday night after allegedly taking the toddler without permission earlier in the day. 20-year-old christina rodriguez does not have custody over the boy and investigators say she wasn't aware that the boy was on medication that needs to be taken twice a day. it is 6:05. no word a popular ride at great america will reopen. an accident critically hurt an employee at the theme park. it happened on the flight deck roller coaster friday afternoon. investigators say an employee reached down to pick up a cell phone someone had dropped on the tracks and was hit by a heavy steel train. a guest also suffered a hand injury. investigators say it does not appear the ride malfunctioned some summer news now, you are going to have a little extra pocket money to spare when you go on your summer vacation. that's because gas prices around the bay area at least are down. >> that's a lot of good news.

"today in the bay" kris sanchez live in san jose this morning. good morning to you. time to plan the family road trip, kris >> reporter: we are planning all kinds of road trips and we know that you have minivan, laura, maybe we'll all pile in with you. it will cost a little less as we pitch if for gas, $3.03 behind me and that's even higher than the average price here in san jose. we are talking about an average of $3.44 a gallon in san jose. if you go to f or you're in san francisco it's $3.60 on average and oakland $3.46. this is of course according to the aaa. our prices are down here in the bay area and across california for that matter. gas cheaper here by about 7 currents over last week, down about a quarter, that is a coin quarter not a quarter of a price last month, but overall across the nation gas is inching up according to the leading gas analysts. it is a slow hike, though. prices were higher for the last

holiday weekend, driving weekend and approximate memorial day weekend but could stay lower for the 4th of july. our completion over at cnbc found that lower gas prices are v. not stimulated the economy as some economists have been predicting that they would, but no one is going to complain about paying a few bucks less at the pump and a couple pennies less might not amount to enough money to take a trip, but it might buy you a little cotton cannedy once you get there. we know that's expensive, too. in san jose, kris sanchez "today in the bay." >> or you're going to pay for it when you go to the dentist. >> i call front seat. if you're happening to be traveling by air don't expect to be as pleasantly priced. even though fuel costs are falling, profits are soorg. the international air transport association increased its profit outlook for the industry by more than $29 billion, up nearly 80% from last year, but passengers only saw a 66 cent reduction in

average airfares last quarter. >> the people are demanding airfare. they are also demanding nice weather to start out your week. we live you a live look outside right now, downtown san jose and throughout the bay area conditions a little bit milder to start. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. >> good morning. starting out with the low clouds, but won't stay that way all day long, we'll get $this afternoon. looking at the temperature now as you walk out the door in san francisco, 53 degrees. 55 degrees in the east bay and the south bay 56 degrees. this is where we're headed this afternoon, reaching 70 degrees in the east bay. and hecking out the tri-valley it will be hot there as we get a look at the low clouds, you can see and the sunrising. absolutely gorgeous shot there. but the winds will start to pick up later on today. this is a look from the east bay as we see some of the clouds moving in. some coastal fog is what we are

seeing this morning and then as we go into the afternoon the clouds will quickly part and give us some sunshine and it will be warming up nicely, but now as we get a look at those temperatures not bad starting out the day and once again, we will see a warm up later on this week. i will show you that and what to look elsewhere as we look at what's happening in the gulf coast, too. watching the tropics there. let's check in with mike. looking over here toward the map, a look at the south bay, we do see a smooth flow of traffic under where it says campbell that incident marking debris reported southbound 17 right around hamilton. not a major concern but still on the chp blotter. i've circled the incident there, 101 at 87 right by the airport reports of a car fire on the shoulder no years reported but someone said they saw some flames underneath the car. that will be a distraction. we'll track that. right now seeing build because of that volume typical north through san jose as well.

we'll cover the rest of your commute. happening today if you have relatives in china this will come as welcome news, san jose international airport is welcoming its first nonstop flight in china. the inaugural flight from beijing to sjc is checked to get in at 11:30 this morning. that nonstop flight is one of three new routes that they are running, the other ones go to seattle and boston. california lawmakers will vote on a budget, but they still have more work to do. the $117.5 billion spending plan would spend billions more to public schools and create a new tax credit for the working poor but governor brown has mott signed off on the plan, he and republicans are worried the state will not collect as much in taxes as democrats are expecting. lawmakers must pass a budget by midnight to continue getting paid. okay. friends and allies of edward snowden defending the secret leaker today. >> there were new ak skblagss

snowden could have cost lives >> reporter: the accusations came in britain's sunday times, the newspaper owned by the same company that makes fox news and the wall street journal, the claim is russia and china were able to dee script some of his secret files and the names of secret agents that britain's mi of had to pull some of those agents out of russia a as a result. the newspaper quotes unnamed governmental officials, snowden's defenders have several questions about this whole story. first criticizing the use of anonymous sources, second they wonder why the white house has not made any kind of similar statement, presumably the cia was affected, third questioning the very idea that those files exist. after all, the first rule of secret agents say critics is you don't write down their names. we're talking about the expectation of jeb bush announcing his official candidacy for the presidency. former ceo carly fiorina was on

nbc this morning, asked her reaction to the bush candidacy. >> i disagree with him on a number of issues, i think common core however it started has turned into a giant bureaucratic program emanating from the department of education. i disagree with him on immigration, as do many others in the party. >> fear in a also talking about this idea of a political class which is great for her because she can take the clintons and bushes on in one fell swoop and say we need something other than a proegs financial political class. >> she may not even be on the same stage as jeb bush. there are so many candidates in this race, are they going to be able to get them all up there. >> she's to go terribly in the polls. jeb bush is not polling as well as you might expect but he's got money. >> and the name, too. a bridge damaged by last month's lighter earthquake in napa, 4.1, is coming down today.

>> we have new video to show you, the damage you can see here, cracks on the oakville cross bridge, it's been shut down since it was damaged in that 4.1 that sam mentioned. there's already a plan in place to demolish the bridge but the quake sped up that timeline. the hope is to have a new bridge open by new year's day. workers will be hit the road today in oakland hoping to fix thousands of potholes in a matter of weeks, it's part of the annual pothole blitz. pop open the champagne. the project will last seven weeks. oakland's pothole problem is so bad the metropolitan transportation commission ranked it 98 out of 109 bay area cities last year. >> that's bad for that alignment. controversial plan for palo alto office and compartment complex under consideration today by the city council. developers want to tear down several dee lap dated buildings on page mill road. in their place a three story building containing 16

apartments as well as office and retail space. critics argue the project will create more traffic and parking problems in an already congested neighborhood. supporters say the city desperately needs morehousing. a decision as soon as today could maek or break the affordable house nothing california. the state supreme court is weighing a case involving a san jose law enacted back in 2010. the law requires new housing developments to set aside 15% of their units at below market rates, developers sued, an a piles court already sided with the city. a ruling is expected to come down today. it would likely impact some 200 similar laws statewide. a lot of people paying close attention to that meantime. we are watching out for your of forecast at 6:18. there is a live look from san francisco on a golden day, it's golden because our warriors return with a victory. i should say they leave with a victory. it's not as golden when it comes

degrees, but look at the tri-valley, 86 degrees today, one of the warmer spots and it continues to go up as we go through the rest of the week, now we're hoping for rain and we've been turning our attention to the tropics to see if that could provide at least a little bit of relief as we look at tropical storm carlos, no luck there. this storm will be making a hard right turn and maybe affecting some of those vacation spots and also for the gulf of mexico, could there be another tropical storm there? of course that stays well to the east of us, but this may bring even more rain for texas and louisiana as if they really need it. that's something that will be making the headlines over the next few days. the first weekend of summer this weekend and it will be heating up, expect the valleys in the 90s, woonts be surprised if we hit triple digits. make beach plans. i will have another look at the microclimate forecast. let's check in with mike.

toward the bay bridge, this is coast side, this is just the toll plaza and a backup here, fills in all lanes. gray skies but going to change like kari said. we will look at your maps and show you a smooth drive on the immediate approach. 580 westbound shows that build coming through the oakland hills. over here, west 88 hill top drive we did have a crash, looks like everything is off to the shoulder, the upper east shore freeway typical build pattern fees shows up. highway 4 and also 580 coming into the tri-valley. overall looking at a pretty good commute, mild build for south 880. southbound 680 shows a smooth drive through pleasanton. some debris around the dublin interchange but the connecting look like it's open. we'll show you this area with a live shot, san jose just a light build 101. something to think about now if you're about to who.in your car for work, the vta has

as soon as today from the u.s. supreme court. mondays are typically the day when rulings are issued and the term wraps up at the end of june. key cases include the legality of specs marriage in six states and president obama's healthcare law. jeb bush ready to launch a presidential campaign months in the making, the 62-year-old former florida governor will formally enter the race today. "today in the bay" edward lawrence live in washington, d.c. this morning. edward, bush is already being seen as a front runner in the republican field. >> reporter: yeah, he is, although polls have the other pack closing in on him. it's not quite as much as of a front runner as he would have been if he had announced early on. he is preparing for that announcement today, the former florida governor says that he is going to look forward to growing the economy, adding 19 million jobs, and discussing better democracy and diplomacy around the world. all of this will be in his speech at miami-dade college.

taking down lifeguard towers and removing trash cans. not in our neck of the woods, in fact, we have a mild day on tap, taking a live book outside, a little cloud cover, typical of a bay area morning. want to check with meteorologist kari hall. get a look at that warm up on the way. right now tropical storm ahead? >> carlos? >> we're watching carlos and also for what's happening in the gulf as we see now that there's just a swirl of clouds there as if approximate they immediate any more rain, right now there is an 80% chance of this becoming a tropical storm and it's still getting its act together but a lot of the models do take this into texas, into louisiana as well. a lot of rainfall there. so something that will be making the med lines. also tropical storm carlos, we're hoping to get at least a little bit of moisture out of this had, but it looks like this makes its way inland and it does not affect us over the next couple of days. we stay dry. as we look at the forecast for even the next days, not a drop

of rain anywhere across the bay area. so this is what the computer models are picking up for us, so it looks like we continue on with our dry conditions. starting out today at least it won't be hot for now. looking at 83 degrees today in san jose and some 70s as well for most of our area, but look at how hot it does get for the tri-valley and it continues to go up this week. we'll talk more about that coming you up in a few minutes. right now let's see what's happens happening on the roads with mike. >> we will show you palo alto where we expect to have that same jam we had all last week, the area between university and embarcaderos has the lane shift going on. that road work in the center part and that's one of the reasons. we will show you the map. just south of this shot we do have a car fire reported, the third car fire for the area -- for the morning, this time right arou san antonio road. the other car fires have cleared without incident.

maybe some brakes overheating for one of them. in the south bay a light volume of traffic as well. we typically will see some slowing about now. the east bay looking at southbound 880, south 680 just showing a little build, hayward down between union city. a smooth flow through the tri-valley as well. we do have a couple of crashes blocking a couple of plains westbound highway 4. critical time of the morning for the drive. the bart line through the area no delays reported for that, consider that as an option for you. upper east shore freeway, west 88 hill top that crass crash has been on the shoulder. you see a slower drive in record richmond, the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights on. gets see if we can get a quick check of the golden gate bridge where we have the clouds hovering over the top of the bridge. it may just be caltrans vehicles that looks like what they are, caltrans vehicles and they shouldn't be a problem. i will check for that anyway

ruptured last night in quero, texas. the explosion lit up the night sky. some people said they could see it from the next town over. the flow of natural gas was shut off, but fire crews are just letting it about your honor itself out. no one was injured thankfully but seven homes were evacuated as a precaution. the woman accused of helping two convicted killers escape from prison is facing a judge right now. this is new video from just about 90 minutes ago as joyce mitchell shuffled into a plattsburgh city court. prosecutors say mitchell gave power tools to richard matt and david sweat both of whom had been convicted of murder. they broke out of the clinton collection nl facility and remain on the run. we have just learned mitchell was investigated for a sexual incident with sweat prior to the escape. we mentioned that texas fire a is second ago. this this morning firefighters in alaska state troopers have told people living in the willow area of alaska to leave as a wildfire burns out of control. that fire started yesterday

afternoon but grew quickly and now tans at 6500 acres. one of the major highways into the area now officially blocked. that tire is so large that alaska has requested additional resources from the lower 48 states. the fire is believed to be human caused but exactly how it started is still under investigation. two north carolina beaches are open this morning, but it's unlikely anyone wants to go in the water. this after two separate shark attacks just piles apart. both attacks happened yesterday off oak island, close to the south carolina border. a 13-year-old girl lost part of her arm and was also injured in the leg. about an hour later a 16-year-old boy was bitten, also losing an arm. both attacks hand as they were in shallow waters about waist deep. the town manager says oak island is is it still a safe place adding this is highly unusual. 6:41 right now and the warriors are getting to close, one one away from the championship but everyone this

sexually assault a woman in a grocery store bathroom in april. sources tell nbc bay area that khaliqi confessed to both crimes but the da has not confirmed that. this morning a san francisco police officer recovering from dog bites. an attack to vicious police say he was forced to open fire, killing that dog. all of this went down outside of a who em in the city's bay view neighborhood when officers got a 911 call and as they approached the house a dog attacked one of the officers. that officer shot and killed the dog, to stop the attack. the officer went to the hospital with multiple bites. we are also learning new details this morning about a kidnapping in sunnyvale. an 18 month old victim spent the night in the hospital and is doing fine reportedly. here is video of his mother's arrest in newark after allegedly taking the toddler without permission earlier in the day. christina rodriguez does not have custody of the boy. investigate issers say she didn't know that he was supposed to be on medication that needed to be taken place a day yahoo no

word yet when a popular ride at great america will reopen. an accident critically hurt an employee at the theme park. it happened on the flight deck roller coaster friday afternoon. investigators say an employee reached down to pick up a cell phone someone had dropped on the track and was hit by a heavy steel train. a guest also suffered a hand injury. investigators say it does not appear the ride malfunctioned. a bridge damaged by last month's light earthquake in napa is coming down later today. you can see the damage in the video, the cracks in the side there on the oakville cross bridge. the bridge has been shut down since it was irs damaged in may's 4.1 magnitude quake centered in yountville. there was also a plan in place to demolish the bridge but the quake sped up the timeline. the hope is to have a new bridge open by new year's day. workers are going to hit the road in in oakland hoping to fix thousands of hot poles in a couple of week, the project is slated to last second weeks.
