west nile virus is returning to the bay area dead birds are now testing positive for the virus. the total of 23 birds have shown up in several counties. you can see the map here. across the bay area. this includes santa clara, san mateo and marin counties. dead birds are often the first sign that west nile is active in our area. this could be a particularly bad year for the virus because of our droughts. >> what happens is the mosquitos are looking for whatever water is nearby. and then you also have the birds that are congregating in that same area. >> well make sure there's no standing water on your property to avoid giving mosquitos pools to breathe in. i want to show you this video of a grass fire along 280. firefighters quickly knocked it down. it was running around northbound 280 in los altos hills. a couple of lanes had to be closed while firefighters tried to bring down the blaze. traffic is back to normal and
8:35 pm
it should be out. it was a little blustery today, that added to the situation for firefighters. >> yeah, let's bring in jeff ranieri ranieri. how are you doing? >> oh, good. you can see we didn't capture the sunset tonight. a live from the underground camera right now across the south bay looking absolutely beautiful. and across the rest of the bay area holding on at 56 in san francisco with areas of fog, 61 throughout the peninsula and 60 right now in the south bay. how about tomorrow morning's forecast? the fog is going to stay put in the morning hours. not only that but low clouds extending all the way down to the south bay and 56 to start. 54 in the east bay, and the coldest start in the north bay with 51 as that wind kicks up it's likely going to feel like the upper 40s. let's get a look at the 24-hour temperature change. numbers are still running about three to four degrees cooler compared to this time last night. so for a lot of you, that had been stuck with that super hot weather the past couple of weeks, this has been nice for you to open up the windows back in the east bay, let the breeze
8:36 pm
come on in and enjoy. now, the reason why today was so comfortable, we had that westerly wind with us 10 to 20 miles per hour. and that really helps you kick up the fog machine today. now, you're going to be able to see here throughout california, the fog is very extensive here from the northern end of california all the way down to the southern end. and right now, it's continuing to move right here through the east bay beginning to enter the north bay and eventually we'll see low clouds enter the south bay, as well. for that reason alone, tomorrow is still going to stay well at least on the cooler side at the plead coastline. here's how it looks. 80 in san jose sunny skies, morgan hill and gilroy mid to upper 80s. at the immediate coastline for the peninsula, it's going to stay fogged in and pacifica with 63. but palo alto sunny skies and 79. san francisco, a mixed bag. forest hill keeps that fog the longest. for the marina breaks of sunny. and the mission, 68 with partly cloudy skies by the afternoon.
8:37 pm
for the north bay, east bay and the tri-valley, sunny skies expected in napa and santa rosa but will likely hang on to clouds in the early afternoon. and for the east bay. pushing up to the upper 80s tomorrow, 87 in livermore, pleasanton expecting 85. now, it is going to get hotter in the forecast. let's round things out with that. and saturday in the south bay, 90 degrees by sunday 93. this ridge of high pressure will produce some hotter weather in san francisco as the fog breaks down by sunday's forecast 78, and in the tri-valley unfortunately, more hot weather coming our way. we do want to finish it out tonight with something of note. if you're doing any traveling or have the connecting flight through texas, we are now tracking tropical storm bill. this is newly named over the last couple of hours. winds at 50 miles per hour. this moves onshore tomorrow morning, winds at 60 miles per hour. it's not the wind that's going
8:38 pm
to be the biggest concern. it's the flooding threat. check out this bull's eye around dallas. 4 to 9 inches of rainfall possible. major flooding flash flooding is likely. it's going to be a serious situation. if you're traveling through texas, this is going to disrupt your plans, you guys. >> thank you, jeff. still ahead here at 8:00. the shallow water shark attacks that left two teenagers seriously injured. we're going to hear from the beach goers who may have saved their lives. also -- >> and i'm sam brock. coming up next on reality check, lebron james says he's absolutely the best player in the world. well, we're going to look at fancy stats like rpm and p.e.r. to let you know what the numbers say about who is really king on the court.
8:40 pm
8:41 pm
that below is the celebration. thousands of people down below near wrigley field where the cubs play baseball. not too far away from the arena. peaceful celebrations it's about 10:40 local time. maybe we'll be seeing some of this tomorrow night or friday night here in oakland. earlier in the newscast we mentioned the warriors arriving in cleveland tonight ready to tip off for tomorrow against lebron james. interesting debate, is king james really the king? >> well, lebron says he is the best player in the world. but is he really? and where does that leave steph curry? reality check. >> curry steps back! >> steph curry broke the cavaliers' back in game five. crushing crucial three after crucial three. lebron james unconvinced about curry's greatness. >> i feel confident because i'm the best player in the world.
8:42 pm
>> is it that simple? do the stats back up his claim? >> so there are two really effective stats looking at a player's true value. one is p.e.r. which is short for player efficiency rating, which basically looks at stats like points and rebounds and assists to figure out what a numerical value is. the second one is called rpm, real plus minus which tells us how the team is performing when he's on the court. >> here's what we found, staff trumped lebron in player efficiency. steph had the third highest mark in the nba around 28. lebron had the eighth highest. then real plus/minus. how did the teams play? when steph was on the floor, the warriors were plus nine points the best performance in the league. lebron was close at plus 8 1/2 points, third best in the nba, just not as good as steph.
8:43 pm
steph's case seems pretty strong. but there's one catch. if you look at only the performance in the postseason with all the chips on the line the scale tips toward lebron. according to espn james' efficiency numbers have provided a pop worth six wins for the cavaliers in the playoffs. curry, meantime comes in second with 5.4 wins. translation, curry is crowned best regular season player. lebron so far, has ruled the playoffs. but only one of the mega stars is walking away with a ring. slam dunk curry. i'm sam brock, that's this edition of "reality check." >> i think he gave the nba title to the warriors. >> and so it goes. >> we hope. well still ahead, quitting in a cloud of controversy. the embattled naacp leader walking away. when she's expected to speak. and he was trying to help. the curious defense coming from a man accused of kidnapping a

kidnapping of a three year old boy from the milpitas library. there was a new twist in the kidnapping of a 3-year-old boy from the library. >> the suspect's attorney now says that her client was actually trying to help the boy. joining us now is maryann favro from the hall of justice. >> a parent's worst nightmare, a 3-year-old boy kidnapped from the library earlier this month. just an hour after the abduction, police arrested 23-year-old eddington on felony kidnapping charges his defense attorney says her client actually believed he was helping the boy. >> i don't believe he was medicated at the time of this incident. he believes he knew the child. he had absolutely no tension of harming this child.
8:47 pm
>> she says her client took the boy on a vta bus to the station in fremont because he planned to return the child in antioch. a bus driver helped police arrest eddington. >> right now, still a kidnapping and that's how we're proceeding. we'll evaluate at that time. >> if convicted, eddington faces 11 years in prison. there's a possibility he may plead not guilty by reason of insanity when he returns to court in two months. nbc bay area news. >> this is not eddington's first time in court. documents obtained by nbc bay area show he was arrested in downtown los gatos, february 25th for battery. pled no contest to slugging a man in the face and was sentenced to two years probation. is it money well spent?
