all of these hours before noon and he has to be up for many of them today. >> so wrong, so wrong. >> he's going to be talking about the st. louis cardinals story, which is bizarre. >> absolutely bizarre and it's another black eye for a major league sport. we'll talk to bob in just a moment. first we want to get to today's top story. the flooding fears in the south as tropical storm bill is on the move. it's a big threat of heavy rain now as many regions hit by storms weeks ago are about to get slammed again. al is tracking it from dallas. good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, this thing is blowing around pretty good right now. it is now a tropical depression but it's still packing quite a punch. it came onshore yesterday morning. take a look and we'll show you exactly what it looked like. the winds blowing around. you can see the high waters of matagarda, texas. so much rain flooding the streets. residents kayaking down the

street in seabrook texas. a lot of flooding and big problems. here's the latest on bill. right now a tropical depression. it is moving north of waco, texas. those winds are dropping. it's moving north at about 13 miles per hour. and as it pushes north, it is going to continue to produce pretty strong winds. waco got wind gusts of over 45 miles per hour. but the big story will be the rain. by friday morning it's into missouri. rainfall amounts generally going to be about 5 to 8 inches but locally in northern texas and into central oklahoma, we are looking at about 8 to 12 inches of rain. the big problem with that, of course, is all of the heavy rain that they've already received, some areas picking up to 20 inches of rain in the month of may. so that now we are looking at conditions where you are not going to be able to absorb anymore of this water. it just continues and continues

to cause big flooding problems. so that's the latest tropical depression bill, making its way north of waco, texas. of course, we'll continue to track it for you later on here. now back to you guys in new york. >> your live shot says it all. we can see it and hear it. >> we're getting news this morning about two major terror plots here at home, one concerning new york city and other possibly last year's super bowl. justice correspondent pete williams following it all. >> reporter: the talk of attacking the super bowl came from a man who helped plan's last month's shooting in garland, texas. federal prosecutors charged abdul malik kareem who runs a carpet cleaning business in phoenix with helping plan the garland, texas attack. the men were shot and killed almost immediately. prosecutors say kareem met with

them and practiced shooting with them in the desert and provided the two men guns used in that attack. an fbi agent testified that kareem also considered some kind of attack on the 2015 super bowl in phoenix. but there's no suggestion that ever got beyond the talking stage. one prosecutor called kareem, quote, off the charts dangerous. kareem's lawyer says the fbi's case is based on a source he described as a typical jail house snitch. in the separate case the fbi arrested a new york area college student accused of planning terror attacks there. the fbi says salhi age 20 came to his attention after twice found walking on the george washington bridge. he was acquiring information on how to build a bomb. in both cases the men were inspired by isis social media. >> pete williams in washington. thanks, as always. >> now to the search for the watt escaped convicts from upstate new york. today the husband of the prison employee accused of helping them

break out of jail will meet with investigators and lyle mitchell says there's no way he's standing by his wife joyce. this as the manhunt is expanding and entering its 12th day. nbc's stephanie gosk on the story for us in upstate new york. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. joyce mitchell is still behind bars. no one has poeflted the $100,000 bail for her. while her husband, lyle mitchell will be questioned by investigators, his lawyer tells us there have been no charges and he doesn't expect there will be. his wife, joyce mitchell, is behind bars accused of helping two convicted murderers escape, allegedly having affairs with both behind prison walls. lyle mitchell's attorney tells nbc news his client is shell shocked. seen for first time in public on tuesday, mitchell advicevisited his wife in jail. >> he's standing by her so,

that's what he told me. >> reporter: but lyle's attorney quickly fired back saying his client told him, quote, nothing could be further from the truth. he says lyle believes richard matt and david sweat may have killed him if joyce followed through with the escape plan. jeff dumas worked as a prison officer for 22 years. he thinks both joyce mitchell and failing system are to blame for the historic prison break. >> it's more like a college campus than it is a prison. >> after a fight broke out in the yard on may 31 stt, a suspect as request for a lockdown was denyied. >> when a facility frisk is done, we check the bars and cell itself. those holes, if they existed at that time, they would have been found. >> reporter: many have wondered how guards could have missed the escape in overnight bed checks.

they say the cell blocks are extremely dark and not allowed to use flashlights and prisoners are allowed to pull blankets over their heads. we reached to the new york state of department of corrections multiple times and they did not respond to our request. matt and asavannah. >> thank you very much. in addition to the nba championship, there's another big story in the world of sports this morning that has a lot of people talking, the fbi is investigating a possible computer hack in major league baseball. federal authorities are looking into where the st. louis cardinals illegally hacked into a rival team's computer. talking about the houston astros. today national correspondent craig melvin is in st. louis and has more on this. hi, craig, good morning. >>. >> reporter: matt, good morning. this would be unprescedented if the allegations are true, it would mark the first case of corporate he isespionage involving

professional sports teams. could it be foul play? the number one team in baseball, the st. louis cardinals fielding questions about whether an employee stole insider information from their arch-rival, the houston astros. >> we heard from the front office that this is something that's going to be addressed soon. >> reporter: citing federal law ens force. sources, employees for the cardinals hacked into the astros computers stealing secrets about player statistics and potential trades and scouting reports. >> any allegation, no matter how serious it turns out to be, is of great concern to us. >> the general manager left the cardinals in 2011. someone connected to the cardinals may have used one of his old pass words to access the astros network. >> corporate espionage, company versus company is very unusual. to see it in professional sports, probably takes that to another level. >> reporter: neither team is

commenting citing the ongoing investigation, but this is the latest potential scandal from the world of pro sports. in may the nfl fined the new england patriots $1 million and tom brady for four games for using underinflated footballs. >> i'm from houston. >> i can't imagine that they would get any information that would help them win a game. >> reporter: with accusations of high tech cheating, america's past time could take another hit. >> so far no one is charged in the case. officials have not said which employee or employees were even involved in the hacking but yesterday the commissioner of major league baseball did say if the allegations are true, the league will act swiftly. back to you guys. >> craig melvin in st. louis. bob costas has covered baseball for decades. good morning to you. >> hey, matt. >> corporate espionage, one of the most respected teams in the game. you're a st. louis guy, does it seem real snl. >> it seems plaus able but we know more general than specific

information. one of the keys is going to be, is this just a couple of low level guys in the cardinals analystics departments and the higher ups, including the owner bill dewitt, did they not know about it? >> you mentioned the word analytics. without getting into the minutia, why this kind of information that was hacked important? >> every time has a analytics department. computer nerds, baseball wonks, they have them. it isn't just the information, a guy like jeff loonawe has formulas into which he feeds this information. there was some belief he took proprietary information with him. it could be a revenge play or search for a competitive edge. >> we don't know how deep this runs. at the moment does it sound like

mischief to you or does it sound like something more nepharious. >> they expect to have a resolution and know what the justice department plans to do sooner rather than later and the key will be how high up does it go? if it goes to the top of the cardinal pyramid, it's not just a major baseball scandal but blow to st. louis' sense of itself, viewed not such as a successful team but model franchise. >> let's take it one step further, why should a nonbaseball, nonsports fan care about this story? >> in theory, if there's a motivation to do this to a competitor in sports, then there's a motivation for another network to do it to nbc. there's a motivation for me competitor to do it to his or her competitor. information is extremely value valuable here. who acted upon is is the key question when it comes to the cardinals. >> thank you, bob, hang out for a little while.

on sunday. incredibly, he is doing okay and he and his family agreed to talk about in an interview released by the hospital. gabe gutierrez has more. >> reporter: hunter is somehow in good spirits after a horrifying ordeal. >> i felt this kind of hit on my left leg then felt it like one more time then it kind of hit my arm and it was -- that was the first i saw biting up my left arm, kind of, got that off. >> reporter: the 16-year-old lost the left arm but kept his sense of humor when a shark attacked him sunday afternoon on a north carolina beach. >> i have two options. i can try to live my life the way i was and make an effort to do that even though i don't have an arm or i can kind of let this be completely debilitating. >> his doctors say he should be ready for a prosthetic limb in about six weeks. >> he's you have walking around and eating a regular diet.

and he is one tough kid. >> reporter: hunter's attack followed a similar incident with a 12-year-old girl just an hour earlier. the family of kirsten says she's in stable condition and while she also lost her arm, she's expected to keep her leg. for that we are grateful, her family says. we want to thank the good samaritans and emergency responders whose clear heads and quick actions saved kiersten's life. since then no more attacks but several possible shark sightings around the area keeping beachgoers on edge. >> i'm very worried. we've gone here for years and nothing like this ever happened before. >> for hunter tressel, a colorado native, it will be a vacation he'll never forget. >> thank you for everybody's sport. >> reporter: for "today," gabe gutierrez, nbc news, oak island, north carolina. >> he has an amazing attitude considering.

♪ this morning on today's kitchen, father's day favorites in honor of the big day on sunday we are sharing some of our favorite recipes our dads loved as we were kids and we like making for our kids. one of my favorites is french

toast. since i usually wing it i'm calling in reinforcements. katie lee will help me with a classic breakfast dish. "endless summer" is her new cookbook. good morning. nice to see you. >> good morning. >> this is an excuse to get you in to cook breakfast for the crew. you reallize that? >> there's no sugar! we're on a detox. >> the guys down stairs cannot eat sugar. i'll be honest. i'm not great at this in the morning. annette is better than i am as she is with most things. talk about the basics. >> french toast is easy. the french name is pain per du which means lost bread so it's a way to bring stale bread back to life. >> a week? >> a couple of days. >> people say it holds juice better. >> it absorbs ss better because the bread lost its moisture. so it soaks up the good stuff.

the best are challah brioche and country white. we'll use the country white because it's not made with sugar. >> we got you. >> i thought i was the one pranked this morning. >> ingredients. >> eggs whole milk vanilla. there are usually two tablespoons of sugar. a pinch of salt. without sugar you can punch up flavor with orange zest lemon zest cinnamon. >> you say it is important to make sure you get this mixed well. why? >> you don't want egg bits on your french toast. if you don't whisk them it gets a crust of weird eggs. we'll add to it four eggs three quarters of a cup of whole milk and the milk has more fat in it for a richerer custard. a little van nil la. >> the thickness of the bread matters. >> it does matterer.

three-quarters of an inch to an inch thick. >> if it's too thick. >> it won't get done in the center. it will be soggy. too thin it can fall apart in the custard. >> let me check with the guys down stairs. they have started to dive in. how is it? >> when you can't have sugar, bacon is good to have around. >> i'm glad you like it even without sugar. >> really good. >> the bread will soak. you can do this the night before. >> put it in a bag. >> make a casserole out of it. put it in a dish and bake it the ethics day. hear's some that's soaked. i have a griddle preheated. important to preheat for a nice crust on the outside. >> do you put butter on there? >> yeah. you're having french toast. you might as well. a coup of minutes on each side. it comes out like this. really nice. let's get you a piece, matt. >> why are they giggleinggiggling.

tropical storm bill. it's now a depression. it's just north of waco now. we have been getting good rain here. there is a secondary system developing down around houston where they are getting heavy rain and thunderstorms as well. bill is going to continue to track north. it's moving north at 13 miles per hour. it's a quick mover. it is dumping from three to eight inches of rain as it makes its way into oklahoma tonight and then beyond. it goes into missouri late thursday into friday. rainfall amounts again anywhere from 5 to 8 inches. could be more locally. there is going to be localized flooding and big problems. the main trouble here is that we have had so much rain in the past month, some areas picking up 18 to 20 inches of rain so that the ground is completely saturated saturated. there is nowhere for the rain to g good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall.

. taking a look at the headlines, a new study is suggesting surgery may not always be needed to treat patients with appendicitis. the best evidence that most patients can be treated with antibiotics instead. researchers in finland looked with patients with uncomplicated appendicitis. about three out of four who got antibiotics recovered easily and patients who did need surgery after aebzntibiotics is no serious effects from waiting. the first increase in seven years thanks largely to older moms. among women in their 30s, the rate jumped by 3% and women in their 40s, up 2%.

birth rate among teens dropped 9%. one of the strongest links yet between exposure to ddt and cancer. researchers looked at 54 years of data from thousands of women, their study found babies who mothers had higher levels of ddt in the blood while pregnant were almost four times more likely to develop breast cancer as adults. the u.s. banned ddt in the 1970s but widely used in the 1960s. american students who took a flawed s.a.t. can get a do over for free. they were told 25 minutes while the directions read allowed said 20 minutes. they are waiving the fee for any students negativively affected and want to retake the exam. reminder this morning to never let your guard down when the queen's guards are coming down the road. take a look at this. this is saint james park. you can see the man with the camera on the left totally

tv. many of the things my father taught me i implement daily. i have never missed my alarm. i have never been late for work. even on my latest nights out, that clock, boom, i hit it. it's an order and discipline he brought to your lives. it pops up in the smallest ways. then it pops up in monumental ways. i'm very proud that that's a part of his legacy with me every day. since my dad passed away, every father's day has been difficult. while it is a celebration for dads and all they do for those of us whose fathers have have passed away, it means two things. it's a reminder that you had to say good-bye. but it's also through the tears a chance to say "i love you." thanks for what you did. >> so sweet! >> we are not going to weep here
