good morning, i'm angie goff. we start with breaking news this morning. a a mass shooting at a church in charleston, south carolina. moments ago police released photos of the suspect who is still on the loose. he's described in his early 20s with sandy blonde hair. a slender build and was wearing a gray sweatshirt blue jeans and timberland boots and looks to be clean-shaven. you can also see his car. authorities wanted to get these photos out quickly. >> this is a very dangerous extremely dangerous individual. and we need the public's assistance to identify him as quickly as possible. at this time we just wanted to get this out as quickly as we could. and ask you to help us to get this out so we can identify this

individual and rest him before he hurts someone else either in the city or the general area. >> this somehow it unfolded. police were called after 9:00 p.m. eastern last night. the shooter is still at large. nine people are declared dead, eight at the scene and another shortly after he or she was transported to the hospital. among the dead long-time state senator clementa pinckney he was one of the people in attendance at emmanuel ame church at a bible stud dixt one of the oldest and most prominent black churches in the united states. earlier this morning, the charleston police chief said this is being investigated as a hate crime and the community needs to come together. >> this is a tragedy that no community should have to experience. it is senseless. and it is it is unfathomable that somebody in today society

would walk into a church when people are having a prayer meeting and take their lives. and i can assure you that we are going to do everything in our power to find this individual, to lock him up and to make sure that he does not hurt anyone else. >> and just after the shooting, there were reports of a bomb threat. police later called the scene clear. and through the evening and early morning, prayer circles, members of the community were passionate angry and airing their feelings. >> we don't know coming into a house of god. actually it's just evil. it's a sin. it's evil. >> people afraid to talk about the real issue, race, and that's what we duck around from these issues are here they're in our community. >> we applaud the coming together and the comradery of the police department. we don't hate the police departments, we love them because we want peace and war is not the answer.

war is not the answer. we want peace and one of the things that i've seen so far here tonight was everybody praying together. it doesn't matter what skin color you are, everybody praying together and joining hands and we going to continue to do that. and the one thing we do have is god on our side. >> a community prayer vigil will be held at noon today at a nearby church. msnbc's bengie sarlin has been on the scene since before the shooting. what are you hearing about the suspect? >> dara we just received some extremely important information from the police chief at his 6:00 a.m. press conference. there's a photograph of a suspect in the shooting that left nine dead at emmanuel ame church in charleston. as you can see, it is a young white male slender build with a sandy blonde or brown hair. and they also have released a photo of a possible vehicle. a black four-door sedan.

they have not identified the make or model. police are asking for any help that the public can offer in locating and capturing this individual. they warn that he's extremely dangerous. if you see him, please call 911. do not approach yourself. but they are doing their best to track this person down right now. and of course that's the most important part of this investigation now, just reassuring everyone that the threat has in fact passed. until you catch this person there's no way they can do that. they're promising more information throughout the day as they get it. there's no word on the victims' identities beyond our independent confirmation of the pastor of the church and state senator clementa pinckney. we'll see, dara if we have any more information, i throw it back do you. >> benjisarlin. isis plots. an fbi agent atauk tacked in a

dramatic takedown. here's nbc's justice correspondent, pete williams. >> fbi agents said when they went this this house on staten island the man inside lunged at him with a kitchen knife. trying to stab an agent in the chest. body armor prevented serious injury. the man, fareed mahmouny was charged to trying to kill a police officer. he admitted being a supporter of isis who wanted to join isis fighters overseas and said if he couldn't get there he would attack any police who tried to stop him. latest in a surge of cases nationwide. >> there are more cases out there, more americans out there, that right now the fbi is watching because they are concerned they may be isis supporters willing to take action even here inside the united states. >> the fbi says the suspect was plotting with a college student arrested over the weekend, 20-year-old munther sali of queens to stage a terror attack in new york.

authorities say they began watching him after he was found wandering on the george washington bridge. he downloaded information on building bombs. out west the fbi has charged an arizona man with playing a central role in last month's shooting at the draw mohammed contest in texas. prosecutors say abdul kareem in phoenix. the fbi said kareem planned attacking the super bowl in phoenix, but it never got beyond the talking stage. a new twist in the new york prison break this morning police have released new images of what richard matt and david sweat might look like right now. the two on the lam for two weeks. a prosecutor says joig mitchell has alleged she admitted to talking with the men about killing her husband, lyle. also the district attorney said mitchell used her cell phone to call matt's daughter before backing out as the getaway

driver. as for the search there are 200 fewer officers on the ground no significant leads, no one single confirmed sighting in the $1 million a day operation. >> there's nothing to suggest that they got out of that area. >> many roadblocks and armed checkpoints are gone. this morning, pope francis is expected to take on the controversy surrounding climate change. the pope as issued a call to action for his estimated 1.2 billion followers. the number includes several gop presidential hopefuls. nbc's tracey potts is live in washington with more. this sounds like the pope is going to shake up some environmental politics. >> based on what we heard this morning, he certainly could. he said the earth is turning into an immense pile of filth in part because of weak governments that won't act on climate change. he said the science is out there, it's real and it's solid. he said that businesses are more concerned with profits than the impact on the poor and he is urging a cultural revolution to

deal with it. a sneak peek at today's statement if pope francis suggests humans should be partners with and not dominate the earth. >> the pope will say that human activity is the main cause, not the only cause, but the main cause for climate change. >> more specifically that big countries like the u.s. and china should reconsider how harmful emissions are impacting the poor. >> the challenging message is mostly directed to the richer nations of the world to think more carefully about their own lifestyles of consumption. >> it's a call to action supporting scientific studies that insist global warming is man-made. the pope's statement is already drawing reaction from the dalai lama who tweeted we must develop a sense of oneness with humanity and from skeptical presidential hopefuls like jeb bush. >> i respect the pope. i think he's an incredible leader. but i think it's better to solve

this problem in the political realm. >> four candidates and two potential candidates are catholic. we may hear more about this from the pope. he is due to participate or he wants to participate in a united nations climate change summit happening later this year. >> we'll see if he has any impact on that tracey potts in d.c. for us. time for a look at the weather and here is nbc meteorologist bill karins. good morning, bill. >> tropical storm bill went down to a tropical depression yesterday, but actually caused more problems as a depression than as a landfall. these pictures out of texas. we had a couple of flash flood emergencies in texas, one was in ardmore, oklahoma. so bad flooding late last night we watch bands of very heavy rain. we're not done it's still being tracked as a tropical depression 25-mile-per-hour winds, the winds aren't an issue. it's just who sets up with the heavy rain. it made landfall through victoria. heavy rain moved through houston two days ago, there are still heavy thunderstorms from houst ton lufkin.

there are a couple of isolated flash flood warnings to the north of dallas and east of oklahoma city. still areas of heavy rain it's a matter of who gets the thunderstorms. computers pinpointing a widespread two to four inches. if you get the training of the thunderstorms, we could get as much as five to six inches of rain. it will drift towards the ohio valley. we still have the heat waves in the southwest and in the southeast. very hot and humid conditions in the carolinas continue. we're still watching temperatures in the mid 90s. that's about ten degrees above normal and the heat indices are 104-110. it's plain old hot in the areas of the southwest. phoenix, 116, ouch your go up through california. the pacific northwest is looking nice that's good.

and find this person so nobody else is hurt. the fcc is slapping at&t with a $100 million fine. the reason? allegedly misleading customers on unlimited data plans. and slowing down data speeds. at&t disputes the claims, it says it notified customers through bills, texts and online. in chicago, a near-disaster on a tarmac two planes on a collision course as the faa investigates. nbc's tom costello has the story. it happened at intercepting runways an alert air traffic controller screaming at a delta plane on a collision course with a southwest plane. >> stop stop stop. as close calls go, this one was serious. two planes loaded with passengers. before the incident, both pilots were warned they had similar flight plans.
