special edition of "today." charleston church massacre with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning everyone. welcome to "today" on a thursday morning. it's 7:00 a.m. on the west coast. we come on live where everyone in charleston, south carolina are looking for the man you're about to see on this surveillance image, the person considered responsible for this terrible mass murder at a church. >> these are images you're going to see a lot throughout the day. this is our top story. here's what we know so far. ten people were shot, at least nine are dead. six women and three men killed when a gunman opened fire inside the ame church. >> police have not released the victims names but we know the name of at least one of them, the church pastor, clementa pinckney, also a state senator. >> let's put the image of the suspect again. you can see he's being described as a clean shaven white male probably in his early 20s.
7:02 am
he has sandy blond or light brown hair. >> this morning the fbi is on the scene. so far the shooter has not been found. there is an intense manhunt at this hour. let's get right to nbc's chris jansing in charleston this morning. chris, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. and that manhunt is growing. in fact, it's no longer just local, it's regional. and they believe those surveillance photos released about four hours ago could lead to a quick arrest. and they have already been getting tips. all of this started unfolding little after 9:00 last night at a church just about a block from where i'm standing. talked to church members late last night, they say the doors were always open. anyone could come in. so someone who wasn't even a member of the church could come in to the wednesday night bible study and no one would think anything of it. in fact, police revealed this morning he was there for an hour before he stood up and started shooting. and then a night of chaos ensued. this morning charleston is a city in mourning and on edge.
7:03 am
>> it's tragedy that we're addressing right now is undescribable. >> reporter: this morning police canvassing the streets of charleston, south carolina, searching for this man who they say opened fire wednesday night on a bible study session at an historic black church. >> this is a very dangerous individual. >> reporter: the shooter, descending upon parishoners at emanuel african methodist episcopal church. opening fire, killing nine people. eight who died inside the church. one person dead in the hospital. >> i regard several victims from an active shooter. >> we are definitely working right now with a number of agents and police officers in our region to identify the individual. >> reporter: police tracking the gunman describing him as a white male approximately 21 years old with sandy blonde hair were also dealing with a bomb threat which was later called off. >> you can see he has on a very distinctive sweatshirt that has
7:04 am
markings. >> we were tracking this individual with canines. we were making sure that he was not in the area to commit other crimes. >> reporter: police have not confirmed the names of victims, but reportedly among the dead state senator clementa pinckney, who was also the pastor of the church. >> he was a sweet person. he was just an ongoing kindhearted man. >> reporter: this man told us his cousin died in the attack. a local barber in his early 20s with a positive attitude. doesn't surprise you he was at a bible study? >> no. that's where he is. he's the person that uplifter. >> reporter: the shooting comes just two months after walter scott, an unarmed black man, was shot by a white police officer in neighboring north charleston sparking protests and racial tension in the area. but multiple people in the community did not want to rush to condemn the shooter. instead calling for peace. >> we are trying to keep calm. we're trying to keep peace within the community.
7:05 am
we're trying to be the barrier of good news in a time of war we're trying to have peace. >> reporter: city officials are calling this an unspeakable tragedy. they were visibly shaken as they briefed reporters this morning. there is going to be a noon prayer vigil. they're calling on the city to be calm, but also asking for help. one more thing, there were three survivors. one of them according to our local nbc affiliate was a little girl who pretended that she was dead and that saved her life. matt. >> all right. chris jansing in charleston. chris, thank you very much. federal officials are opening a hate crime investigation into this shooting. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has more on that. pete, what can you tell us? >> reporter: matt, good day to you. officials say they're following several very strong leads. they have identified several possible subjects of the investigation. because they have the surveillance video to go on, because they have the witnesses,
7:06 am
because they have the car that was in the parking lot, this gunman made no efforts to conceal his identity. atf people are checking the shell casings, witnesses are being asked for their descriptions. so they have several potential names that they're checking out now. obviously they're not releasing any of those names because they don't know whether the people they're looking at were involved or not. but they're confident that they're going to find out who did this and make an arrest pretty soon based on all the evidence they have. the fbi is attempting to enhance the surveillance pictures. they're checking databases of the car to look for other possible owners. so they're optimistic here, matt, that they have a lot of very strong leads to pursue. >> pete williams, pete, thank you very much. nbc news analyst clint van sant is a former fbi profiler. clint, good morning to you. and let's pick up on what pete just said. it looks like investigators have some tools that they can use to close in on this suspect. >> yeah.
7:07 am
they've got two different sides of this investigation right now, matt. they're putting together the forensic side so they'll have everything that's needed to identify the weapon and perhaps the individual and link him to that weapon at the crime scene. the second half is to actually find the shooter. i think it's highly likely that they may know who he is. i mean, you and i look at that picture. if that was somebody we knew, if that was a kid in the neighborhood or somebody that, you know, one of my kids had gone to school with, they would know who that is. and i'm sure the calls have come flooding in to the fbi and police. right now they may well have a number of different locations they're looking at. but i would find it hard to believe that they wouldn't have this person in custody before the day's on. >> and because we're talking about someone who exhibited an ability to display this kind of violence and this kind of hate and he's a young person about 20, 21 years old, there's a good chance he has vented that hatred to others.
7:08 am
isn't there either in person or online? >> yeah, i think we're going to find that. it's really hard somebody that young not to be on social media, not to talk to others. you know, you and i covered the virginia tech story back in 2007, and it's that same type of mentality on the part of the shooter where the shooter at virginia tech looked out and held everybody on that campus responsible for his own challenges. >> right. >> and then acted out against them. i think this shooter is the same type of individual. he's holding a certain group of people responsible and therefore took this terrible action against them. >> clint, we spoke on the phone you and i a little earlier, and you shared a statistic with me that i found shocking. we think of churches as places of refuge, holy places. just explain what you told me. >> yeah. i was researching this today, matt. and i found out that in the most recent year 2014 there were 176 significant acts of violence
7:09 am
that took place in places of worship, 74 of those that resulted in death. so, matt, you know the traditional places we think of safety are home, the schools, the churches, all of these are being invaded by individuals who believe they can come in, they can act out. they may find individuals who may not be able to defend themselves at that specific point. and that looks like what we're seeing here. but again, what level of callousness does it take, number one to bring a gun and enough ammunition so you can reload five different times, we're told. and then number two, sit there with your victims, get to know them for an hour and then stand up and kill almost every one of them. >> clint van zandt, thank you for your perspective. >> chilling facts here. earlier this morning i had a chance to talk to reverend john hall brown, he's the pastor of
7:10 am
the nearby mount zion arkszme church. began asking him how he and the community are doing this morning. >> terrible. terrible. but very supportive of the mayor, the police department and most of all bishop of the seventh episcopal district of the ame church, you know, continues to lead us and have us to respond in kind that we lean on one another to help the community get through this terrible situation. >> it is shocking in every sense and already authorities are calling it a hate crime. how do you feel about what has happened here? i mean, is there anything that would ever have made you think this could happen in your community? >> yeah. for me as far as it's a shock, but when you look at america. america has this great love affair with guns and anybody can get them. whether they're mentally
7:11 am
disturbed, whether they're crazy, whether they're part of a hate group. just give them a gun. everybody has a gun. and nobody wants to police it or reign it in. and when you have things like this, it would be absurd to think that every church that has a service or a meeting would lock their doors and lock people out. you just can't do that. so when you look at this country and the direction it's going in, it's just a lot of violence everywhere. it's almost nonstop. >> reverend, i know we're just starting to count the toll this morning, the human toll of what has happened here, in particular i know you were very close to reverend pinckney. what can you tell me about him? >> clementa pinckney was a leader with the young people, the young people group, he knew the church. he grew up in the church. when he became elder person as a man there was no doubt that he did not address as either yes, ma'am or yes, sir, always had that demeanor about him. >> i know he had a young family,
7:12 am
a wife and two daughters. do you know anything about how they're doing this morning? >> well, we were with the families last night. they're definitely in our prayers. and the church has come to their aid and rescue. so it's community along with other nine persons who were gunned down. >> you are all in our prayers this morning reverend john hall brown. thank you for your time this morning. >> thank you very much. god bless you. >> thank you, sir. >> had a press conference a little earlier this morning. the mayor of charleston, joe riley, called this "an unfathomable and unspeakable act by someone filled with hate and a deranged mind." and he added that they're doing everything they can do to bring this person responsible into custody. >> obviously will continue to follow it. we turn for new details. >> new details on what authorities call isis inspired plots to attack the u.s. the most recent came wednesday when the fbi says one of its agents was attacked in new york city. officials say agents were
7:13 am
attempting to search the suspect's home when 21-year-old fareed repeatedly attacked and stabbed the agent in the chest. prosecutors say he admitted being an isis supporter. the fbi says he was plotting with a college student arrested over the weekend. 20-year-old munthe to stage a terror attack in new york. the u.s. supreme court could rule on several high profile cases today. among them extending subsidies for the affordable care act. congressional republicans now say they will move to continue to temporarily deliver aid if subsidies are overturned. and also could vote on whether to legalize same-sex nationwide. a white tiger that broke loose from a zoo in the country of georgia during severe flooding killed one man and injured another. nbc's kelly cobiella is in london with the very latest. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning.

yes, once again people there are afraid to leave their homes today. they've been told almost all of the dangerous animals from the zoo have either been captured or have died, but clearly that wasn't the case. late wednesday a volunteer helping to clean up after the floods was attacked by a tiger. a full-grown white tiger. zoo keepers thought it had died in the floods, but when a cleanup crew went in it lunged at them. special forces shot and killed it. this eyewitness said the man who went in first was bitten in the throat. he didn't survive. throughout the night armed searchers were looking for another missing tiger and a striped edd hyena. swept away cars and people, killing 20 and destroying much of the zoo. about half of the 600 animals either drowned or escaped. this hippo swam out of its pen.
7:15 am
it was tranquilized and herded back to an enclosure. but bears and big cats were loose in the city. >> it was necessary, unfortunately, to shoot animals because they could harm people. >> reporter: officials say the last missing tiger and hyena may be buried in the mud and debris, but as wednesday's attack proved there's no way to be sure. there have been lots of false alarms overnight. no sightings of a tiger or hyena. but an endangered african penguin from the zoo was spotted alive today. he was swimming in a river 40 miles from the capital. >> wow. all right, thank you, kelly. some frightening moments this week at an airport in kazakhstan when a commercial airliner burst into flames just moments before passengers were about to board. the boeing 737 caught fire after an oxygen cylinder exploded. video shows 15-foot-high flames

8:03 am
now though that they know who he is, the question is where is he? officials have now identified the gunman behind wednesday night's tragic shooting at a historically black church in charleston, south carolina, as 21-year-old dylann roof. police are still on the hunt as they learn more about the suspect and the moments leading up to the shooting. >> he sat among the congregation for a substantial amount of time before he pulled out a weapon and started firing at people. >> reporter: officials are investigating the incident as a hate crime. federal, state and local law enforcement all on the scene are now asking the community for help. >> this is a all-hands-on-deck effort with the community as well as law enforcement. and i think with that effort we'll find this person quickly. >> active shooter, multiple people down. >> reporter: the suspect fired upon church goers during a bible study shortly after 9:00 p.m. killing eight people at the scene and another who later died at the hospital. among the dead, the church's

good morning. i spoke with and vice president biden spoke with mayor joel riley and other leaders of charleston sow express our deep sorrow over the senseless murders that took place last night. michelle and i know several members of emanuel ame church. we knew their pastor reverend clementa pinckney who along with eight others gathered in prayer and fellowship and was murdered last night. and to say our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families and their community doesn't say enough to convey the heartache and the sadness and the anger that we feel. any death of this sort is a tragedy.
9:22 am
any shooting involving multiple victims is a tragedy. there is something particularly heartbreaking about a death happening in a place in which we seek solace and we seek peace. in a place of worship. mother emanuel is, in fact, more than a church. this is a place of worship founded by african-americans seeking liberty. this is is a church that was burned to the ground because its worshippers worked to end slavery. when there were laws banning all black church gather arings they conducted church services in secret. when there was a non-violent movement top bring our country closer in line with our highest
9:23 am
ideals some of our brightest leaders spoke and led marches from this church's steps. this is a sacred place in the history of charleston and in the history of america. the fbi is now on the scene with local police and more of the bureau's best are on the way to join them. the attorney general has announced plans for the fbi to open a hate crime investigation. we understand that the suspect is in custody and i'll let the best of law enforcement do its work to make sure that justice is served. until the investigation is complete unnecessarily constrained in talking about the details of the case but i don't need to be constrained about the emotions that tragedies like this raise. i've had to make statements like this too many times. communities like this have had
9:24 am
to endure tragedies like this too many times. we don't have all the facts, but we do know that once again innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun. now is the time for mourning and for healing, but let's be clear -- at some point we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries. it doesn't happen in our places with this kind of frequency. and it is in our power to do something about it. i say that recognizing the politics in this town.
9:25 am
foreclose a lot of those after news right now, but it would be wrong for us not to acknowledge it. and at some point it's going to be important for the american people to come to grips with it. and for us to be able to shift how we think about the issue of gun violence collectively. the fact that this took place in a black church obviously also raises questions about a dark part of our history. this is not the first time that black churches have been attacked and we know that hatred across races and faiths pose a particular threat to our democracy and our ideals. the good news is i am confident that the outpouring of unity and strength and fellowship and love
9:26 am
across charleston today from all races, from all faiths, from all places of worship in the -- indicates the degree to which those old vestiges of hatred can be overcome. that certainly was dr. king's hope just over 50 years ago, after four little girls were killed in a bombing in a black church in berm hammirminghambirmingham alabama. he said they lived meaningful lives and they died nobly. they say to each of us dr. king said black and white alike, that we must substitute courage for caution. they say to us that we must be concerned not merely with who murdered them, but about the system the way of life the philosophy which produced the murderers. their death says to us that we must work passionately and unrelentingly for the

realization of the american dream and if one will hold on he will discover that god walks with him, and that god is able to lift you from the fatigue of despair, to the buoyancy of hope and transform dark and desolate valleys into sun-lit paths of inner peace. reverend pinckney and his congregation understood that spirit. their christian faith compelled them to reach out not just to members of their congregation worked to members of their own communities, but to all they opened their doors, to strangers, who might enter a church in search of healing or redemption. mother emanuel church and its congregation have risen before from flames from an earthquake
