morning. it's easy to say that community is still reeling. savannah, good morning you to. >> good morning, matt. this is such a beautiful city. this morning, they're nursing the shared wound. it's hard to put night words just how small of grief and sadness the community is. this church behind me is steeped in history. i stood at the base of this morning and i thought how it could happen here? this is a sacred place. and so many people are wondering, how did it happen? there are so many questions, so few answers, matt. >> of course, what happened there in charleston is our top story again this morning. savannah, here's what we know. the suspect, 21-year-old dylann roof will be in court later today for a bond appearance. right now he's in the charleston county detention center. the victims in this massacre range from age from 26 to 87. they're being remembered as kind hearted people who shared the love of family and, of course, faith. tonight, members of the community will come together once again for a somber vigil to

remember those victims, savannah. >> that's right. and, of course, all eyes will be on that courthouse looking for dylann roof later today when he faces a judge. let's start our conversation this morning with nbc's chris jansing who was here from the very early hours. >> good morning. the question, is should dylann roof get bail? he'll be facing a judge for the first time since this mass murder later to day. even as the city plans another memorial for tonight, roof returned to the city that he left in mourning, wearing a bullet-proof vest and at one point flashing a smile. >> less than 24 hours after he left charleston in his black hyundai, dylann roof was brought back on a state plane in handcuffs and a prison jump suit after waiting extradition. booked by the charleston county sheriff after going into a bible study, police believe, intent on killing blacks. >> acts like this one has v. no place in our country and no place in a civilized society. >> and for the first time, we're seeing what appears to be video

inside that bible study. hosts by victim tywanza sanders. check out the man on right who appears to be roof. nbc news has not independently verified the video. the website got from sanders friends. this afternoon dylann roof will have his first day in court for a bond hearing arrested after a florist on her way to work recognized roof's car and distinctive hair cut from videos. >> it's nothing to do with me. i'm telling you, the lord had me where i needed to be on 74. he had a me watching the news. he had me see all that. >> roof didn't resist whether they stopped him in north carolina nearly 250 miles away from the shooting site. he had been arrested twice before on drug and trespassing charges. roof was convicted of press tassing while the drug case is still pending. >> do you have any indication how someone goes from two minor arrests to what is allegedly one of the worst mass killings in state history? >> try to figure that out. but right now we don't have answers to that.

>> at the church, a memorial is growing. scores of people walk together last night to pay their respects. and william gregory who knew all the victims talks of forgiveness and resilience. >> i know that this is what these nine people -- -- would want. >> now everywhere you go in this city the grief is culpable. tywanza sanders is being credited as one of the heroes inside that church behind me. he apparently said to the gunman when he was taking aim at the oldest person in the room who is 87 years old, shoot me instead. and we have reported earlier about a 5-year-old girl who laid on the floor and pretended to be dead, saving her own life. it was her grandmother who told her to do that. another one of the heroes of this very tragic story. >> we've seen people in there in their finest moments and people at their worst.

there are so many questions about this man, dylann roof. why exactly he would do what he is accused of doing. there is a lot we don't know about him much he's 21 years old. nbc's gabe gutierrez is looking into him. >> roof is being held here and friends and family say that he'd become a loner in recent years, talking about segregation and having several run ins with the law. >> reporter: this morning a clearer picture emerging of dylann roof. >> stayed to himself. really low key. he wasn't -- he was under the radar. >> reporter: this middle school friend says roof recently reached out to him for the first time in five years. and made some troubling comments about race. >> he was just saying how he deposit agree with the trayvon martin case, how he wanted segregation. he wanted it to be white with white and black with black and that he didn't believe in what the black race is doing to the white race. >> reporter: pictures on social media show roof sitting on the

hood of a car with a confederate flag on the license plate and wearing a jacket with apartheid era south africa. family members say the 21-year-old roof was a good student when he was younger but while repeating ninth grade at this high school, he dropped out and never returned. in february, police arrested roof outside this columbia mall after security reported he had been going into stores asking employees how many people were working and what time they closed. when approached, police found a bottle of narcotics used to treat addiction and booked him for drug possession. that case is still pending. but now he's a suspect in a church massacre. a woman who spoke to a survivor said one of the victims tried to talk to roof while he was reloading his gun. >> he just said i have to do it. he said, you rape our women. you taking over our country and you have to go. >> after waiving extradition, roof is expected to appear in

court via video conference this afternoon for a bond hearing. nbc news has confirmed that he confessed to the killings shortly after being taken into custody. his uncle telling might be might be msnbc he hopes he gets what is coming to him. >> thank you so much. earlier this morning i had a chance to talk with debbie dills, the woman who helped police track down dylann roof. she called her boss after she saw roof on the highway. i asked her what was going through her mind when she realized it was him. >> well, i was nervous. i was scared. normally i'm not that kind of person. i got back on the bypass to go see just if i could just get a tag number, just to see and make sure -- i had a feeling. i'm sure that was divine intervention intervention. i said brit and i'll say it again. i feel like god had his hand in it and he was -- he had me where i needed to be. he had todd to help me get

through. i was nervous. i was scared. >> and how did you feel when you found out a few moments later after you sent that license plate to todd and the police that, yes, in fact, the authorities had caught him? >> very, very nervous. but kind of had a feeling for those people in charleston. i had been praying for those people since i heard about the shooting wednesday night. and they were on my heart, on my mind heavy. and i just was praying for them and hoping that maybe it was -- would help them to find a little bit of peace in such a terrible, horrific situation. >> and, debbie, what does it mean to you that these families who are going through so much right now, they have said they want justice. that's what they want. and in a way, you're a piece of that happening to them. how does that feel? >> it wasn't me. it was god. he used me as a vessel.

anybody is a hero, it is him. it was through him everything that happened. it happened for a reason. the people there were praying. we've seen their pictures on interviews and standing around in circles and they were praying. and they need to know and i know they know today that god heard their prayers. if he used todd and me as just any kind of vessel to do that, then that's good. i'm a willing vet will, whatever he wants. so that's what matters the most. >> debbie and todd, you're incredibly brave and quick thinking and you made all the difference at a really important moment for your community. thank you so much for being here. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> one of the incredible stories of heroism to come out of this tragedy. i'm joined by south carolina governor nicky haley. she met with family members of the shooting last night and leaders of the mother emanuel church. governor, good morning. >> these are such sad circumstances. i know you spent time with the families and you carry their

grief in your public statements yesterday. what does it say about in 2015 somebody walks into a church like this during bible study, sits there and then shoots them one by one? >> you know, i had to have a conversation with my son yesterday to try and explain why this happened. and it's hard to explain. you look at something -- this is the holy city. charleston is known as the holy city. we were the friendlier state in the country. that this doesn't happen here. we're just devastated by the fact that one individual would show so much hate in a state that loves each other. and especially very faithful, very prayerful. churches are sacred. the fact that that happened is devastating. >> you mentioned the word hate s there any doubt in your mind that this is a hate crime, one motivated by racism? >> this is an absolute hate crime. i've been talking with investigators. they say they looked pure evil in the eye yesterday. >> the federal government had spoken up and opened a investigation into whether it is a hate crime.

state prosecutors may also be able to pursue a case. it's between the states and the federal government. do you want to see him prosecuted in south carolina? do you think is a death penalty case? >> without yes, yes, and in south carolina, these are nine families that are struggling. this is a state that is hurt by the fact that nine people innocently were killed. we want absolutely will want him to have the death penalty. this is the worst case that i've seen and the country has seen in a long time. we'll fight this and fight it as hard as we can. >> i note president called you yesterday. he then made public remarks. he openly vented about mass violence and in particular gun violence in this country. i know you're a strong supporter of the second amendment s there anything about this situation that makes you think, okay, should we rethink? is it time for some kind of change? >> any time there is a traumatic situation, people want something to blame. they always want something to go after. there is one person to blame here. a person filled with hate, a person that does not define south carolina. and we're going to focus on that one person.

you know, i know that president obama had his job to do and he made the statements. but my job is now to get the state to heal. and our folk us is very much on the nine families and the mother emanuel church family and ame family and people of south carolina who are saying that one person doesn't define us. what is happening in churches now around the state, that defines us. >> governor nicky haley, thank you for being here during hard times. appreciate you. matt, back to you in new york. >> savannah, thanks very much. investigators are likely working all around the clock to try to figure out the motivation behind this attack. shawn henry is a former executive assistant director of the fbi. shawn, good to see you. good morning. >> good morning, matt. >> as we learn more about this guy, he started making comments recently that started to get his friends nervous, things like he wanted segregation back. he had a plan. he was going to do something crazy. he wanted to start a civil war and hurt a bunch of people. and because he had always been a shy kid, nobody took him seriously. is that one of the things we need to learn from this situation?

>> you know, when we look at what the societal ills are that allow this to happen, i can't imagine somebody goes from being a regular citizen to massacring nine people the way this occurred. certainly people heard about this. his friends, nem school, et cetera. they've got to come forward. in our society now, law enforcement doesn't have the ability to be monitoring. they don't have the right to be monitoring everything that is occurring within a community. it really is incumbent upon people who recognize this type of activity, who see somebody who is acting oddly, somebody who is espousing violent behavior. they have to bring that forward. >> practically speaking this may sound like a hypothetical. but if they went to law enforcement and said my friend made comments like this, what could law enforcement have done? >> you know, sometimes -- there's a line, of course, between freedom of speech and someone that did something illegal. what law enforcement would have

done is gone out and talk to him. someone might have caused him to question what he was saying or perhaps he would have told law enforcement what he wanted to do in which case that would have changed this and made this a completely different dynamic. it's not really clear what could have happened. the fact that people may have heard him talking about this in this day and age i think people have to come forward and make sure that it is brought to somebody's attention. >> i agree with you on that. shawn henry, thank you very much. >> thanks, matt. >> a lot of other news to get to this morning. we have new information on those escaped convicts. >> yes, good morning. the two convicted killers who escaped out of that maximum security state prison have been added to the u.s. marshal's 15 most wanted fugitives list. stephanie gosk has the latest from dannemore yachlt good morning. >> good morning. richard matt and david sweat have eluded law enforcement for two weeks and now the convicted murderers are place ond a notorious most wanted list. >> reporter: richard matt and

david sweat have joined a dangerous club, the u.s. marshals list of top 15 most wanted fugitives. the list is a way to draw more attention to their faces and hopefully generate more tips. >> the u.s. marshal certainly has cast a wider net around the world. we're reaching in areas that are vulnerable or we believe there's been intelligence gathered. >> a new $25,000 reward will be added to the existing $100,000 reward offered by the state of new york for any information leading to their capture. >> this is a marathon. it's not a sprint. everyone wants them in custody yesterday. we'll find them. we'll definitely find them. it may take longer. they had an elaborate plan. >> the alleged accomplice, prison worker joyce mitchell sits behind bars. she plead not guilty to charges accusing her of helping the convicted murderers. the da says the threesome plotted to kill mitchell's husband. while mitchell visited his wife in jail to get answers to a lot of lingering questions.

according to his attorney who spoke out to matt. >> he's in shock. still. this is a woman he felt was his best friend for 21 years. and now he finds out she was possibly even part of a plot to kill him. >> following the escape, the prison went into lockdown. inmates in their cells sweeped inside and out. that lockdown is lifted. the investigation into what went on behind the prison walls is continuing. >> a car crashed into a wall in upstate new york injuring 17 people. the u.s. coast guard says they hit a river wall. there were 300 passengers and crew aboard. eight people were taken off the ship for treatment. the ship will remain there until it can be safely moved. a very rocky start for tiger woods on day one of the u.s. open. chambers bay golf course in washington state proved to be an uphill battle for the 14 time

7:30 now on friday morning, the 19th of june 2015. there is a somber mood in charleston south carolina. nine people being mourned and remembered after they were killed while praying in church wednesday night. matt this is a community who has a wound that feels open and raw now. >> there is only one piece of good news. the suspect is off the street and in custody. i was listening to you talk to the governor of south carolina. it was interesting what she said about the form the prosecution might take. >> absolutely. first of all, she said this is a hate crime.

back now at 7:37. on thursday nbc news announced brian williams, a 22-year veteran of the network would not return as the anchor of nbc nightly news. he steps down after revelations that on multiple occasions brian made inaccurate statements about his experiences on the field including a story about a military helicopter he was traveling in during the iraq war. brian sat down with me over the last two days to discuss how the distortions happened and what the past five months serving suspension would be. we both agreed there would be no conditions or guidelines on the

interview. what have the past five months been like? >> torture. looking back it's been absolutely necessary. i have discovered a lot of things. i have been listening to and watching what amount to the black box recordings from my career. i have gone back through everything. basically 20 years of public utterances. >> wiehy? did you have doubts about things you said over the years? >> i was reading newspaper stories not liking the person i was reading about. i would have given anything to get to the end of the story and have it be someone else. but it was about me. these statements i made. i own this. i own up to this. i had to go through and see and tie to figure out how it happened. >> you're a family man. personally what have these five months been like? >> it has been a time of

realization. trying to find out in me what changed. you know in our work i have always treated words very carefully. that's the coin of orur relalmrealm, our tool the key to our credibility and integrity. matt it is clear after work when i got out of the building when i got out of that realm i used a double standard. something changed. i was sloppier and i said things that weren't true. looking back that's plain. >> you say "sloppy." did you not deal with the reality that when you walked away from nbc, whether it was to appear on a late night talk show or some other venue, some other interview show that the title and the responsibilities of anchor/managing editor of

"nightly news" traveled with you? >> i think that's exactly it. looking back it had to is have been ego that made me think i had to be sharper, funnier, quicker than anybody else. put myself closer to the action having been at the action in the beginning. >> was it conscious, brian? let's go back to january when you went on "nightly news" and recounted a story about a military veteran who played a role in a harrowing chopper ride you took covering the iraqi war. you told the story and had told other versions of it. did you know it was not true? >> i told the story correctly for years before i told it incorrectly. i was not trying to mislead people. that to me is a huge

difference here. after that incident i tried and failed as others have tried and failed and why sitis it when we are trying to say "i'm sorry" we can't say "i'm sorry"? >> you say i wasn't trying to mislead people. did you know when you went on "nightly news" that you were telling a story that was not true? >> no. it came from a bad place. it came from a sloppy choice of words. i told stories that were not true over the years, looking back. it is very clear. i never intended to. it got mixed up . it got turned around in my mind. >> i worry as you say this brian, that people who will have listened to your apology on air

went on air and apologized. you used terms like i was mistaken in my recollections and in other apologies, con flated aircraft. did you give thought at the time to going on air and saying "i lied" is this lied"? >> i know why people would see it that way. it's not what happened. what happened is the fall of a host of other sins. what happened is clearly part of my ego getting the better of me to put myself in a better light. to appear better than i was. that's the process here. >> not to put words inner eryour mouth but had you gone on air and said folks, i lied i'm sorry. do you think the outcome would have been different? do you think forgiveness would have come sooner? >> i think perhaps, yes.

richard matt and david sweat to their 15 most wanted list. some sad news this morning, comcast founder ralph roberts has died at age 95. matt looks back at the life of cable television's pioneer. >> when i started the cable company back in 1963, i never dreamed that it could possibly grow to where it is today. >> nor could he have dreamed the company name he came up with would some day be alongside the peacock atop 30 rock. >> ralph roberts was not supposed to be the cable man he turned out to be. he started as an advertising guy. that was his original career. he was in the navy. he used to sell golf clubs. he used to sell belts and suspenders. >> reporter: all that changes ss sd in the early '60s when they bought a tiny cable company in tupelo, mississippi, better known as the birthplace of elvis presley.

me er for father's day later. >> and we can eat. >> always good. they said you just have to eat. sign me up. >> we have a great father's day surprise as well. we start with a terrible story from charleston. the suspect in wednesday's shooting dylann roof has confessed to the crimes. confession is a positive piece of evidence for the authorities. there will still be a trial but it is a big piece of evidence. police say he shot and killed nine people inside the emmanuel african methodist episcopal church near the heart of the tourist district. the nine victims ranged in age from 26 to 87. in fact one of the few survivors was a 5-year-old little girl. there was a vigil in charleston. roof arrested in shelby north carolina. actually spotted by a woman who recognized him from the news. thought she recognized the car and said i knew it by the hair cut. she saw it in the surveillance
