backed down from one woman and her name is taylor swift. talking about the new music service that launches next week. she wanted her royalties for her and other artists and now they're going to get them. >> if you had any doubt whether she is a force in music to day, she s more on that in a moment. it's a fresh lead in the man hunt for the two men who escaped from a maximum security prison here in new york state. officials are now focusing on a hunting cabin not far from where that search began two weeks ago. nbc's john yang has the latest for us this morning. good morning you to. >> hey, savannah. this morning in the mountains of the adirondaks, some of the most intense activity yet in the 17-day search for david sweat and richard matt. overnight, authorities confirmed to nbc news that the new search was sparked just 30 miles from the prison after a break in was reported at a remote cabin. the owners saying an individual was inside the cabin and fled the scene once he arrived. the search for escaped prisoners

david sweat and richard matt now focused on the adirondak mountains, close to where it all began. it comes less than 24 hours after a sighting two of men fitting the convicted killers' descriptions had police searching in friendship, new york. >> female reporting that she saw two males possibly matching the description of the fugitives. >> there was two people. >> that report came from brandy thompson. >> they were just coming out. my dog barked and that's when they turned around and ran back down. >> by night fall, the efforts came up empty. >> i just hope it ends. i hope they get them. >> reporter: meanwhile, nbc news learned that investigation of prison workers is expanding. already joyce mitchell is charged with giving them some of the tools they used to cut through steel walls and pipes. now several guards are under investigation and one gene palmer has been put on administrative leave. his attorney says palmer had extensive contact with the

escapees and mitchell but didn't have advanced knowledge of the prison break. >> he plans on being completely forthcoming with any information that can help and the capture of mr. sweat and mr. matt. >> and in this search the new york state police are getting help from vermont state police. a special tactical unit trained in barricade situations and active shooters. savannah? >> all right. john yang on the trail for us. thank you so much. nbc news analyst clint van zandt is a former fbi profiler. good morning to you. as i go to you, we mention we have the two sightings now. one in western new york apparently on saturday. and then another 24 hours later, 300 miles away. it is credible that both of the sightings could be confirmed? >> well, this is what law enforcement has to determine. number one, we know there is no information a car was stolen, any means of transportation once

they popped out of that man hole. so if they only had one plan and that one plan was joyce mitchell and she failed to show up, safe money says there is still around that prison somewhere. the only way they could get from point a to point b perhaps is riding the rails. hopping on and off freight trains as they pass through that area. but again, even though law enforcement has to run down every tip, i think there is something in the people involved in the search that says they haven't got out of this area. if we keep pressing the cabins, these houses, these woods, we're going to find these two. >> let's say this cabin sighting is a confirmed one. if they spent any time in that cabin at all, one imagine there's is a treasure-trove of forensic type evidence for investigators to grab on to. >> yeah, it should be fairly easy. have to go in quickly and find the fingerprints and dna of people that have the right to be in the cabin and exclude that

and thn look for the prints of the fugitives. the search dogs, they're using bloodhounds that would have the scent of these two. so they ought to be able to pick that up fairly quickly. savannah, there are hundreds of houses, homes, cabins, places they could hide. and realize you can go in and search one, move on to the next, these guys can circle around behind you and come back into the house you just searched. >> but before i let you go, are you surprised there's no report of any carjacking, any holdups, any kind of, you know, home invasion? there is really no sight of them at all. >> these are all the things you just said what we normally hear on an escaped prison that they have to have those things to take care of themselves. so either somebody else helped them or they were able to get in one location, hunker down and they're still there. they know if you steal a car, if you break into a house and it's found that you're going to have 800 cops come on you in one location at one time.

so, you know, being out 17 days is a record. but they've got 800 people looking for them. if they're still in the immediate area, they're going to be found. >> all right. clint van zandt, always good to hear from you. thank you so much. it was an emotional scene in charms ton, south carolina last night. thousands marching across the city's main bridge for the nine victims of last week's church shooting. it kamzcame hours after that church reopened the doors after the massacre. today craig melvin is there in charleston for us. good morning. >> good morning to you. as you can see, the memorial behind iman ually ame continues to grow. over the weekend, there was this 2500 word hate filled manifesto that was found online. law enforcement sources believe the shooter himself wrote it. meanwhile, all of this as charleston this holy city, continues to answer hate with

love. >> thousands took the streets in charleston charleston marching in a unity chain. just hours after the church opened the doors for the first worship service since the tragedy. >> a lot of folks expected us to do something strange and to break out in a riot. well, they just don't know us. >> among the crowd, south carolina's governor, one of the senators and the long time mayor of charleston. >> it broke our hearts in charleston. but it's broken hearts in america. >> reporter: some who lost family members in the attack just had to be there. >> my grandfather loved charleston. and to see what an example they have been to the nation, his heart would just be so full. >> reporter: across the city, bells tolled in many of charleston's other historic

churches for nine minutes, one for each victim. including the church where the alleged shooter's family worships. >> we're in solidarity with the nine families who lost loved ones. we stand in amazement at the gift of forgiveness they expressed in such an open way. >> reporter: over the weekend, more disturbing images surfaced of 21-year-old dylann roof posing with guns, confederate flags and at many sights dedicated to the history of the confederacy. there is also a 2500 word manifesto that perhaps lays out his motive for mass murder. sources have a tributed it to roof but it has not yet been verified by nbc news with passages including, "someone has to have the bravery to take it to the real world, and i guess that has to be me." roof's apparent obsession with the confederate battle flag has helped inspire a move on that petition to remove the flag from all government locations in south carolina. that petition and last check has

garnered roughly 500,000 signatures. lawmakers here in south carolina are said to return this week to hand handle some budget matters. i asked them about the likelihood there could be action taken on removing the flag from state house grounds. he told me while it's possible, "it is highly unlikely." savannah? willie? back to you. >> thanks a lot. we're all marveling at the grace and forgiveness shown about it families over the last couple days. >> it speaks louder than any act of hate, that's for sure. a lot of people are talking about race relations in america including president obama. in a new interview the president used a controversial word to make his point. nbc white house correspondent has that part of the story. good morning. >> good morning you to. after the massacre in south carolina which has been called a hate crime in which as craig just mentioned igniting calls to take down the confederate flag from flying near the state house, the new comments by president obama on race just out this morning are getting a lot of attention. the president spoke about the

country's history of racial tension and on the popular podcast in an interview taped on friday. take a listen. >> the legacy of slavery, jim crow, discrimination in almost every institution of our lives, you know, that casts a long shadow, and that's still part of our dna. that's passed on. we're not cured of it. racism. racism. we're not cured of it. clearly. >> and it's not just a matter of it not being polite to say. [ beep ] in public. that's not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. it's not just a matter of overt discrimination. we have -- societies don't overnight completely erase everything that happened two to 300 years prior. clearly, some strong language there. president obama has addressed

race several times during both his campaign and also his presidency. but use never used the highly charged n word before. he is very mindful of his role as the first african-american president and often is careful to discuss racial matters in ways that don't enflame the conversation. now we reached out to the white house but so far no reaction. by the way, in that same interview, the president renews his calls for new gun laws. but also acknowledges there is just no appetite in congress right now. it's a real indication that he has no plans to actually push for new legislation before he leaves office. savannah and willie? >> thank you. meantime, we have a new snapshot of the republican race for president. the first debate will be held in cleveland in just 46 days. according to rules set forth by fox which is carrying the debate, only the top ten candidates according to the national polls in the runup will make that debate stage. >> being up on that stage can be critical for name recognition and fund-raising w that in mind, here's is a look at the latest

nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. making the cut would be jeb bush with 22% saying set first choice. wisconsin governor scott walker at 17% followed by florida senator marco rubio, dr. ben carson, former arkansas governor mike huckabee, kentucky senator rand paul, former texas governor rick perry. rounding out the top ten, ted cruz at 4% tied with chris christie and carly fiorina, the only woman in the republican field to crack that top ten. that would meent following candidates would be out, donald trump, south carolina senator lindsey graham and john okay is sick at 1%. also not making the cut, bobby jindal, rick santorum and former new york governor george pataki. now you know why the vase to get on the stage. that is the first threshold to clear. >> obviously a lot of time to go. things can change day to day. let's turn now to a massive fight to contain a drought driven wildfire that threatened hundreds of homes near california's big bear lake. it is just one that is burning

across the state. nbc's joe fryer is there. joe, what is the latest? >> good morning, willie. firefighters working around the clock are gradually making progress. today temperatures are expected to drop a little bit which should help. this forest fire is now consumed more than 17,000 acres and we just learned it is now 21% contained. firefighters are bracing to another long day battling a stubborn fire on a steep mountain. >> if you look at the hill himd behind me, it's extremely steep. there are trees coming down, rocks coming down. >> about 2,000 firefighters have been called in they're attack flames that are feeding on old growth trees perched high atop peaks in the national forest. some spots are so rugged they can't even be reached on the ground. >> they can start fighting that fire once again. >> it's a scene playing out

news. that bold deadly attack on the parliament building in afghanistan that's the biggest taliban offensive since u.s. forces handed over security to afghan troops this year. nbc's reporters are falling the developments out of london. >> the attack began in the early hours this morning with asuicide bombing and then an attempt to storm the parliament. a government spokesperson says 31 civilians have been wounded this morning including five women and three children. on live television, an explosion rocked afghanistan's parliament. smoke and screams filled the chamber. outside, a massive car bomb had been detonated. and from four sides, taliban militants attack. a huge fire came up from the building this man said. the country's democracy deliberately targeted, defended only by guards. and this morning lawmakers had

mshgs found themselves spending the night on the building and without their luggage. united said we understand the inconvenience this causes our cuffs and will refund their rome to chicago flight. it's the second time in as many weeks united passengers have spent an uncomfortable night. mechanical problems forced a chicago to lon ton flight to land in goose bay on canada's east coast. they were housed in a local military barracks while the flight crew stayed at a local hotel. at that time, united said we apologize to our customers for the disruption to their travel plans and will be refunding their tickets to london. a routine international flight lands more than 30 hours later. but one passenger was missing. the one now charged and still being held in belfast for disruptive behavior on an airplane and common assault. for "today," kevin tibls, nbc news, chicago. >> all it takes is one passenger
