we are learning what they left behind in a hunting cabin. we'll err from the husband of the prison worker accused of helping them escape. first stephanie gosk has the latest on the manhunt. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it was a tough night of searching. this is a rgugged area with lots of bugs and now rain. this sleepy town became the center of the manhunt after a local hunting cabin owner stumbled across spn running from his place and reported it to police. sources close to the investigation tell nbc news dna recovered from the cabin is a match to richard matt and david sweat. we spoke to a local business owner who spoke to the cabin owner and said he's spooked. he went in and found a jar of peanut butter and a jug of water on the table that shouldn't have been there. this area is popular in the summer with tourists. there are lots of summer camps beginning to fill up. law enforcement are telling

people to be vigilant and on the lookout for anything suspicious. matt? >> stephanie gosk thank you very much. joyce mitchell the prison employee told her husband lyle the escapees threatened to harm him if she didn't go through with their plan. we the talked to lyle mitchell exclusively with his attorney peter dumas. i can't imagine a more tension-filled 17 or 18-day period. how are you? >> taking it day by day. it's been rough system. >> can you describe how it turned your life up eyde down? >> one day 100% everybody happy. the next day this is what happened. just in shock. >> like someone pulled the rug out from under you. >> yes. >> lyle mitchell spoke for the first time since his wife was charged with providing tools to help richard matt and david sweat break out of maximum security clinton correctional facility 18 days ago. tell me where you were and where

you first heard there had been this escape at the clinton correctional facility where you work by the way. >> i was at the hospital. my wife that night said she was having chestmorning i come in turn the cell phone on and we had beep beep beep from the family state troopers looking for us. when my wife turned the cell phone on she said oh my god, matt and sweat escaped. >> authorities say joyce mitchell planned to run off with the inpates after picking them up but she never showed up having suffered eded an anxiety attack. she was hospitalized that nightment the innight. when you and your wife heard today had escaped what was her reaction and yours? >> i couldn't believe it. her reaction -- they really escaped. i left it at that.

>> you looked in her eyes. nothing seemed unusual about her expression. >> nothing. they wanted to talk to us because we though them or to help out. we went to the police barracks. said you guys are are looking for us? who are you? lyle and joyce mitchell. yes, we have. >> you had no reason to ask your wife do you know anything about this escape? >> no, no. next morning she said state police called. they wanted to know about a package. i said what are you talking about? she said i need to talk to the troopers. the investigator said mr. mitchell your wife is more involved than she's letting on. what? he said she brought two hacksaw blades a philips head and a which he isle

chisel. oh, my god. >> when did you ask her? >> that night on the way hope. >> you said did you help them escape? >>she said i was over my head and scared. she said i have something else to tell you. >> i said, what's that. she said their plan was they want to kill you. they wanted her to pick them up. >> she admitted to you at that moment that once the two escaped from clinton and made their way to the manhole that she was supposed to be the one to pick them up and drive them away. >> she told me matt wanted her to pick them up. she said i never leave nowheres without lyle never. he said i will give you pis s pills to knock him out. she said i'm not doing that. i love my husband. i'm not hurting him. then she said i knew i was over my head. i can't do et. he started to threaten her with somebody inside the facility would do something to harm er or kill me or somebody outside the jail if she didn't sfatay with

times. no. and she said that's when he started to threaten her or things. >> one of the other headlines, lyle that came out was your wife joyce had a sexual relationship with one or both of these inmates. >> absolutely not. >> did you ask her point blafrpg? >> absolutely. she swore on her son's life and her son, i never ever had sex with him. >> this is where it's a tough story. as you well know. because it's almost more believable for her to try to help two guys escape if she's in love with one of them. it's hard to believe if there were not an emotional attachment. >> she told me she was matt would give her attention and stuff, and she'd -- did not believe that i loved her. >> when she keeps bringing up she didn't believe you loved her anymore, that is it does sound like a woman who is looking for love elsewhere.

>> yes. >> and you don't think she found that love with richard matt? >> no. >> he sounds like a guy who spent a lot of time getting close to your wife. >> yes. >> is it your contention and her contention that he manipulated her to the point where she did the things she did? >> i believe so. >> you went to see her, you mentioned, in jail. the tell me about that meeting. what was it like? >> i asked her how things were. they said it's rough because she has never been in jail before. treating you okay? she said yes. >> was she emotional? >> yes. crying bad. she said i did not mean to do this she said but -- things happened. and i said how can you do this? she said it just got out of hand. then i was scared and didn't know what to do. >> does she claim she was forced to do the things she did in terms of supplying them? >> she said she -- no part of the tools, she did not.

as far as everything else she said comes down to hurting me that's when she said something was wrong. >> the plan was for her to be there in your car? >> supposed to be our jeep to pick them up. >> at what point did she decide she couldn't go through with that? >> she didn't say. she said when she started having pains and she said earlier i realized i messed up and i loved you and she said i had to -- she said i couldn't do it. >> you just said something interesting. you said she realized that she got in too deep and she loved you. it sounds like before that realization, that epiphany she was ready to move on. >> could be. but she said -- it's like -- a fantasy. that's what she told me. >> what did you take from that? >> she said it was -- it's like attention. she said something i didn't

think you loved me anymore and giving me attention. >> you stop and think about it now, lyle isn't it very likely that had you been in the back of that car and had she shown up in that getaway car, that both of you would be dead right now? >> absolutely 100%. >> if she had gone in that car -- >> she would have been dead within a half hour i figure. she would just get away they were going to kill her they were and all they wanted was that vehicle. >> when you left the jail i believe it was joyce's attorney who said that you were standing by her and you were supportive of her. >> i never once told her lawyer -- that's what made me so mad on this here. i never once told i stand 100% behind my wife. there are so many thoughts running through my head. do i still love her, yes. am i mad, yes. how can she do this? how can she do it to our kids? >> she telling you the truth? >> i believe so now, yes. >> but are you standing by her? do you support her? >> as of right now i don't know

what to think. >> you knew both of these inmates pretty well. >> i've been there ten years. ten years september. and every time i went in there these two always speak to me. always. >> i think they were going person to person doing the same exact thing. >> seeing who they could get close to. >> more flies with honey than vinegar. that's what they were doing. >> your wife is facing several charges. >> yes. >> she could end up in jail or prison herself for quite a while. >> yes. >> would you stick with her through that? or might you testify against your wife? >> right now i do not know. i don't know. it is so much going through my mind. >> is he is a trustworthy person lyle? >> in my heart do i believe she'd hurt me no. >> your heart goes out to this guy. because his entire world has been turned upside down.

quality of the air on passenger planes. >> this this morning four flight attendants are suing boeing the world's biggest plane manufacturer accusing it of knowing about a defect that allows toxic fumes to leak through the engines into the cabin. off the top of your head they say the fumes could cause serious illness. tom costello has been looking into it. >> reporter: this is air all of us potentially breathe on an aircraft. for years people have complained about dangerous fumes in the cabin. now the lawsuit and the coroner's report suggesting a british pilot may have died from toxic fume ex poe sure. july 12 2013. alaska airlines flight 769 makes an emergency landing the if chicago with four flight attendants seriously ill after complaining of chemical fumes in the cabin. two passed out including vanessa woods. >> next thing i knew i was on

the galley floor. the other flight attendant was on the p.a. system just mumbling incoherently. >> reporter: paramedics rushed all four to the hospital sick disoriented and struggling to concentrate. two years later three including woods say tremors, memory problems still prevent them are from returning to work who. all four are now suing boeing accusing the plane manufacturer of exposing then and the passengers to tok sick fumes that seep into the ventilation system. >> i got on the flight, i was healthy. i got off and i have never been the same since. >> reporter: most modern aircraft are ventilating by bleeding outside air through the engines into the cabin. experts say if a seal inside the engine leaks burning oil can mix with cabin air. the flight attendants' attorneys say it happens once a day shr this the world and citing internal documents the lawsuit suggests boeing has been aware of the danger for decades

contaminants. it issest pated hundreds perhaps thousands of crew members and passengers may have been affected but may not realize why. >> they may not realize they are sick or it was caused by contaminated air so they are not properly treated for the poisonous fumes in their system. >> reporter: boeing has been sued before. it is declining comment but has studied the issue and found cabin air is safe to breathe. research has consistently shown that cabin air meets health and safety standards and contaminant levels are generally low. boeing says it is looking for ways to improve planes and cabin air is one of the many subjects it is studying. the flight attendant suit calls on boeing to stop using the bleed air system in new planes and put air quality sensors the this planes flying already to warn pilots if toxic fumes are mixing into the cabin. importantly boeing's 787 doesn't use the bleed air system to ventilate the cabin. back to you. >> tom very interesting.

debby finish each other's sentences it's hard to believe they spent the first 45 years of their lives apart. >> our birth mother thought there was one baby back then they didn't do tests and the circumstances she gave the baby away and turned out to be two. they gave two families a baby. >> the sisters met for the first time 18 years ago. debby had just learned she was adopted and with help she found out about sharon and decided to call her identical twin. >> it's like my gosh we sound so much alike. >> a twin expert studies sharon and debby. and included them in her book "born together reared apart." >> they have similar personalities, they both used to make the same funny faces as children. they used to roll their eyes to the top of their head. is this coincidence or not? i think not. i think it's scientificic data.

>> what about siblings born together with no biological connection. >> i'm john henry. >> i'm jackson. we're virtual twins. >> cary and johnny were thrilled when their adoption agency called to say they were matched with a baby but the excitement didn't end there. >> about an hour and a half later the agency called back and said wait another birth mother who is pregnant would you be interested in adopting both babies. i instantly told her both boys. >> they were fwoth adopted at birth. john henry first, and jackson five months later. the boys are now 12 and finished sixth grade. >> we are twins because we live together we do everything together and i can't remember a moment not being with im-. >> the brothers referred to as virtual twins, less than nine months apart. interest in public speaking and football. they love to throw parties and both excel in school. similarities they share with their sister kate.

and el viso. two candidates are vying for a partial term to fill the seat vacated by former council member chu. he moved to the state assembly. there are some 40,000 registered voters in district 4, and the polls close at 8:00 p.m. tonight. san jose city council members will discuss approving a new contract for firefighters. last week those firefighters overwhelmingly ratified the deal. it calls for their first wage increase since 2004 and it represents a hike of nearly 15% spread out over four years. the raise also includes lump sum payments amounting to an added 3%. let's get a look at what's going on on the weather front. >> good morning, i'm meteorologist kari hall. we start out with temperatures in the upper 50s across the bay. as we go into the afternoon, expect 60s and 70s. for most of us but a few spots will be warming up like the tri-valley reaching 86 degrees. north bay, also fairly warm 79 degrees this afternoon.
