we had over 800,000 people without power. and as you look right now, this is a severe weather in the northeast damaging -- i mean, punishing tornadoes ripping apart homes, flipping over cars. this is in depford new jersey, you can see in the parking lot, a possible ef-1 tornado causing big problems, flipping over these cars. we had a real mess out there. and then we also started to see torrential downpours, this is in midtown manhattan. the rain came down but we were spared some of the bad stuff. this is hoboken. look at the lightning strike there. and the ominous clouds over fenway park and besides that, they lost to the baltimore orioles, so -- adding insult to injury. here in the northeast, we ended up with gorgeous sunsets. look at those skies. the bright purples and pinks and oranges, a nice end to the day but boy, a lot of folks looking

at rough stuff. we've got rough stuff, there you go again looking over the fenway park. we have strong storms pushing in over the midwest again. third day in a row we've been seeing this. omaha, you're looking at showers and thunderstorms moving through right now. from iowa to indiana, daytime heating, a lot of moisture coming up from the south along the boundary layer. we have a risk of strong storms, especially from central iowa to western indiana, 20 million people at risk. tornado threat greatest in iowa. could be enhanced to a strong risk later this afternoon. and then tomorrow we've got a wide swath, 21 million people, wind gusts of 60 miles per hour and hail and tornadoes can't be ruled out. flood watches from des moines to chicago. we'll look at anywhere from 2 to 3 inches of rain coming in with strong storms again tonight into tomorrow. we may be looking at this another outbreak later on today

into tonight for a lot of folks. >> al, weather and sports today. >> thank you very much. >> thanks very much. there's a new report this morning tied to the death of freddie gray while in police custody. a death that touched on violent protests in the city of baltimore. it is the leaked copy of gray's autopsy. today national correspondent craig melvin is here with more on that. good morning. >> good morning to you. this autopsy report was completed on april 30th, the day before the maryland state's attorney announced those criminal charges against the six officers involved in gray's death. it has not been made public and not been seen by nbc news, but the leaked information to the baltimore sun comes just twojust two days ahead of the deadline for releasing evidence in the case. according to the autopsy report reviewed by the baltimore sun but not independently verified by nbc news, the state medical examiner's office declared freddie gray's death a homicide because officers failed to

follow safety procedures through acts of omission. >> they obtained the autopsy report for freddie gray and say his death met the medical and legal definition of a homicide by the act of omission, failure to render aid and use of seat belt. >> it obtained the report from an o none mouse source, it was likely caused by a high impact injury to the head, comparing those injuries seen in shallow water diving accidents. >> likely when the van he was driving in accelerated or decelerated caused him to hit walls in the van. >> he suffered injuries while in police custody. his death, a week later sparked protest and riots in baltimore that drew national and international attention. six officers were charged in gray's death. they have all pled not guilty. the defense attorneys for those officers released a statement saying in part, neither the six

officers nor any of their attorneys have a copy of the autopsy report, nor have we ever seen it. both the medical examiner's office and state's attorney's office say they are not the source of the leak of the report. state's attorney marilyn mosby released a statement, i strongly condemn anyone with access to trial evidence who has leaked information prior to the resolution of this case. >> according to the paper, the medical examiner concluded gray's most significant injury was to the lower left part of his head, also noted, the possibility that gray's neck injury happened with him in a partially reclining position or as he was changing his position on the floor of the van. lots more on that report. >> thank you. spying by the nsa is back in the headlines with revelations that the nsa eavesdropped on three french presidents, the country summoning the u.s. ambassador to its foreign ministry. nbc chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell is covering the fallout here.

good morning to you. >> good morning this is the kind of revelation that's proved explosive in the past with our closest allies. when it comes to spying, the u.s. may be keeping our enemies close and friends even closer. this morning the french government is summoning the u.s. ambassador to france after claiming the nsa has been spying on the current president hol hand and two predecessors. hollande is call the breach unacceptable, adding that france will not tolerate actions that threaten security. the accusations come after wikileaks published documents late tuesday that have not yet been confirmed. the white house told nbc news we are not targeting and will not target the communications of president hollande. we do not conduct any foreign intelligence surveillance activities unless there is a specific and validated national security purpose. the white house statement did not specifically address whether the u.s. spied on the two

previous french presidents. this isn't the first time wickky leaks revealed that the u.s. spied on foreign leaders. when president obama met with german chancellor angela merkel only a few weeks ago at the g-7, he was still trying to repair the damage from a previous wikileaks revelation that the nsa had eavesdropped on her cell phone for years. and the timing of all of this couldn't be worse for president obama, who needs all the help he can get from allies as secretary of state john kerry is about to head into the final round of nuclear talks with iran this friday. >> he's going to need all of his diplomacy skills on a lot of different levels, thank you. >> in other news, the massive search for fugitive now entering the 19th day, we're learning about the help the killers

received to carry out their brazen escape. stephanie gosk has the latest. >> reporter: in our drive up here we were stopped no fewer than a half dozen times in a stretch of about ten miles, each time we had to lower our windows and pop our trunks. this search as it goes on, any hope that the latest lead will lead to a quick capture has faded. richard matt and david sweat keep slipping through their fingers. this morning the grueling search for david sweat and richard matt focused on this rugged thick forest. sources close to the investigation tell nbc news that's where a cabin owner caught the convicts by surprise. roughly 30 miles from the prison. dna from both men was found. it left behind half eaten food and pair of underwear. new details on how they escaped. according to the da, joyce mitchell says she smuggled tools into the prison by hiding them in ground beef. hacksaw blades and drill bits

and a hole punch. gene palmer, put on administrative leave not being charged, is the one who delivered the meat to sweat and matt. he passed a polygraph test saying he didn't know he was handing over tools. joyce's husband, lyle mitchell told matt she was in too deep and didn't know how to get out of it. >> did she claim she was forced to do the things she did in terms of supplying them? >> not as far as to the tools. when it comes down to hurting me, that's when she said something was wrong. >> as the search reaches day 19, residents are taking extra precautions. this cabin is five miles from where the dna is found. >> it's very unnerving when i pulled in and had to have a loaded weapon with me. >> we're basically in the middle of the woods here. >> you're a long ways from anywhere right here, absolutely. >> reporter: state police have moved their staging area from the fire department here in town to a local ski resort. the county sheriff says right

flag merchandise. meanwhile, ahead of the ban, sales of certain items on amazon jumped nearly 9,000%. >> interview with the ceo of walmart saying that he was surprised they sold the confederate flag. didn't realize and was an easy decision. >> a new decision from the white house on what families can and cannot do to try to win loved ones release. peter alexander is following this story this morning. >> reporter: he'll meet privately with the family of hostages here today and announce new changes, most notably will announce that the white house will not stop families from privately paying ransom. basically the government officials tell me will look the other way and not threaten to prosecute families that pay. the u.s. government will city not pay ransom. the law doesn't change. this is obviously significant.

summer vegetable chowdererment erchowder. one of our most requested recipes with our new contributor siri pinter. the rest of the gang is at the tasting table. good morning. >> good morning. >> we are doing one-pot, trying to make it easy. you don't want to complicate it with a thousand ingredients. >> simple ingredients. onion, celery potatoes, red bell pepperer corn cream -- which is optional -- olive oil, chicken stock, parsley, salt and pepperper and zucch ini. >> can i substitute? >> throw whatever in it. >> i watched you cutting the corn off the ear a while ago. we are going to give tips. >> this is a tip. i'm doing this this a lot. my son has no front teeth. always cutting corn off the cob. use a pie pan and watch. okay. we lost a couple. >> don't worry about it. >> most of it is caught eight in the pie pan. great tip.

taking a look at the taking a look at the headlines, the child protection group says kids since 2012 have had more than 32,000 calls to poison control for children who have ingested the laundry pods. they get a call once a day because of the pods. they are considering new safety standards and encourage parents to keep the pods out of a child's reach. and loud traffic noise is bad for your health. british researchers looked and listened around london monitoring traffic noise during the day and at night and they found deaths were 4% higher in areas with loud traffic.
