a greek debt crisis is setting off around the world as we kick off a short holiday week. early "today" starts right now. good morning i'm alissa ray burger. the nightmare is finally over. that's what andrew cuomo said after the hunt for the two escaped killers is over. richard matt is dead and sweat is in critical condition. he was found close to the canadian border. after making the announcement yesterday, a genuine since of relief and accomplishment. >> let's give a big round and applause to the men and women of law enforcement. >> perhaps no one is more relieved on than richard matt's old accomplice who testified against him. for lee bates, the threat of revenge is over. >> look at a picture of richard matt. that was the devil.

i thought, is it real? is this finally over? and part of me wanted to say, i got to see this, because i don't believe it. and then certainly i saw enough through reports and on tv and the nightmare had ended. >> reporter: nbc's jay reports on how it all happened. >> reporter: this morning david sweat is under a heavily armed police guard inside albany medical center. >> at this time his condition is listed at critical. he was he was transferred to the trauma center. >> mr. sweat was spotted by a new york state police sergeant, sergeant jay cook. >> reporter: cook was on patrol alone and outside the search area as he approached sweat, the convicted killer started to run. >> he realized that sweat was going to make it to a tree line and possibly could have

disappeared and he fired two shots from his service weapon. >> reporter: sweat was captured about 16 miles from the area where border patrol agents shot and killed his accomplice richard matt on friday. >> these were really dangerous, dangerous men, both matt and sweat. they were killers. >> reporter: overnight, dozens gathered outside the clinton corrections center the place the killers burrowed out of on june 6th. a sigh of relief for a community that spent more than three weeks on the lookout and on edge. this morning, police say they identified sweat's dna on a pepper shaker they believe he may have used to mask his scent and throw off search dogs while he was on the run. jay gray, nbc news, malone, new york. on the same day that three-week effort finally came to a close a bit of a deja vu. in north carolina another inmate escaped prison but for convicted murderer christopher mcneil his momentary freedom was much more short-lived.

he is back behind bars after several people recognized him from his photo. police found him walking along the highway and as it was in the case of the two new york escapees, he may have had help. a 33-year-old kitchen worker is being charged with harboring a fugitive and aiding and abet ago fugitive. among the charges having sex with an inmate and providing a cell phone. now to a terrible tragedy in massachusetts where a small plane crashed into a home in plainville. all three passengers on the plane were killed. amazingly, though, the four family members inside the house safely escaped before fire engulfed it which was sparked by a crash. >> anyone that was anywhere year that crash scene at the time of the crash was in great peril. it's quite a miracle the four were april to get away from that unscathed. as tragic as the situation is with multiple fatalities, it could have been a lot worse. >> that part of the south reportedly does not have fire hydrants. firefighters had to put out the flames with the water in the fire trucks.

from coast-to-coast, a big weekend for gay pride events. millions of people across the country tonight in gay pride parades on sunday. the celebrations in the wake of the supreme court's landmark decision to legalize same-sex marriage. in new york, governor andrew cuomo officiated a wedding. before the ceremony, he talked about supreme court's decision. >> marriage is an individual choice. i'm not married. equality, equality is not a choice. equality is a promise. and this was about equality. >> meanwhile, texas attorney general ken paxton is calling the supreme court's decision a lawless ruling. paxton says state workers can fight their religious objections in denying marriage listens.

nbc's tracie potts is live in washington for us today. what about other skeptics including some gop hopefuls saying the issue isn't exactly settled. >> reporter: exactly. bottom line the supreme court said it is the law of the land in all 50 states. it doesn't necessarily mean you can walk in and quickly get a marriage license whenever you live. from new york to california gay pride demonstrators were applauding. >> it's forever. >> not necessarily. they can refuse to issue licenses based on religious objections. louisiana and ohio will comply. >> the supreme court ruled and it's the law of the land. >> we have no choice to comply. i think the decision was the

wrong one. >> by the power recently vested in me in the state of new york i now pronounce you married. congratulations. >> new york's governor performed his first same-sex marriage before the paperwork left the court. presidential candidates are weighing in. >> are we going to trade one level of discrimination for a new level of discrimination? >> here is what happened if you have a church, mosque or synagogue and you're following your faith and refuse to perform a same-sex marriage because it's outside the tenants of your faith in my presidency you will not loose your tax status. >> a decision -- the attorney general in alabama and texas have made it clear they will defend the religious objections from county clerks and judges who do not want to be involved in authorizing same-sex marriages. the texas attorney general said he has an army of lawyers standing by for those cases.

we could see this work back up to the courts. thank you. an investigation is underway after an unmanned spacex rocket exploded in air yesterday. it was the third cargo ship to be lost in eight months. the rocket was heading to the international space station carrying more than 5,000 pounds of food water and supplies. following the explosion scott kelly called his twin mark kelly now at spacex and nbc news. >> they have a lot of food on board. they have a lot of supplies. >> the next russian resupply ship lifts off this friday. spacex and boeing are slated to fly stroentds to the nation 2017. a wall of dust moved across the phoenix area on sunday creating treacherous conditions for drivers over the weekend.

another dust storm brought high wind and cut off power to at least 15,000 homes. fortunately no injury sies were reported. now for a look at the weather, here is nbc meteorologist bill karins. >> good morning. happy monday. >> it is. a tale of extremes from the east coast to the west coast especially the northeast and the northwest. this is the weather pattern we had for the last two winters and now it resurfaced in the middle of summer. the effects are different. instead of snow and instead of being dry it is brutally hot in areas of the west. that's been the set up and this weekend we were off the charts in some sports here in the northwest. as far as the boston area goes we were only 59 degrees for the high temperature on sunday. boise was 110. that's 51 degrees warmer in boise than boston. these were all time june high records. redding was 101 and salt lake city 102. a lot of daily record highs but
