has the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. sergeant cook was out here by by himself, a 21-year veteran of the state police. he didn't have a tactical team or automatic rifle, but because he was alert and such a good shot, the 23-day man hunt for matt and sweat came to an end. david sweat is hospitalized in protective custody in albany after being shot and arrested sunday afternoon. just a mile from the canadian border and 30 miles from the prison he escaped. according the authorities shortly after 3:00 p.m. jay cook saw a suspicious man jogging down the road and he ran across the open field and cook opened fire to prevent him from reaching the heavily wooded area. >> just bang-bang. >> reporter: the end of the manhunt coming close to michael doyle's window. >> i have never seen 40 or 50 cop cars or 400 guys running up

the road with guns. >> reporter: he was struck in the torso before being transported to the area hospital. 16 miles south and two days earlier, sweat's partner in the escape richard matt was shot and killed by police. autopsy results released sunday say matt died of three gunshots to the head. it's not known when or where the pair split up. but according to police sweat's dna was found on an object not far from where matt was killed. >> it was a picnic style pepper shakers, and we believe that possibly these two male were using pepper to throw the scent off of the dogs who were tracking them. >> reporter: celebration was in evidence. governor cuomo spoke publicly sunday night. >> the escapees have been dealt with. we couldn't have a better ending. >> reporter: authorities had hoped to catch sweat alive

because they want details on how he and matt escaped from prison and his more is also happy, but had she seen him, she would have turned him in herself. savannah? >> stephanie gosk thank you. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer is outside the hospital where sweat is being treated. what's the latest on his condition? >> reporter: well, good morning. david sweat was shot twice in the torso area and doctors won't release specifics about the injuries. we know he's being evaluated by a team of doctors. he was transferred by air ambulance and on the ground into the hospital. he's in the high security area. the staff here won't say if he has spoken to doctors but the district attorney says he has not yet spoken to investigators. of course, after richard matt was killed he is a key piece to this investigation. investigators clearly want to speak to him, about how he was able to escape and how he stayed on the run for nearly a month. that has not happened.

again, he's still listed in critical condition. back to you. >> as you said, authorities would love to get information out of him. meantime keeping a close eye on the delicate situation in greece this morning. the on going financial crisis now leading to an emergency banking shut down for at least six days. nbc's kerry sanders is in athens for us this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: well the banks are indeed closed today and will be for the rest of the week. atms are functioning, and they're supposedly going to dispense up to 60 euro a day to somebody who needs to get money out. the problem is that the atms are empty and they have not replenished the currency in those, so folks are lining up but they can't get any money. there's an increasing feeling here in greece that the euro which they have had for five years could be replaced with its old currency the drachma.

overseas, marks reacted this morning, and the nikkei in japan fell 3%. the london stock market is down 2%. the u.s. market has little financial exposure to the euro crisis but experts say it's often hard to predict how emotions will impact trading. after five years of dramatic and often painful cut backs on government services and attempts to have residents pay their taxes, the country remains deet deeply indebted and cannot make an immediate loan payment of $1.5 billion. the long line to atms depleted the cash that are not just hitting the greeks. those here on vacation are caught up in the financial crisis. at acropolis, the class said they have a full day to spend here. >> i'm completely out of euros and i can't get anymore. >> reporter: while street protests in athens are so far

calm the vacations said would they have to known about this they would have gone elsewhere on vacation. would you come to greece on your vacation? >> i'd have to say no to that. >> reporter: tour operators here say they have been getting worried calls from americans. meantime russia's vladimir putin could step in and help greece. if he does that that would turn a financial situation into a political situation and that would likely draw in the united states. savannah? >> kerry sanders in athens thank you. meantime experts at nasa and spacex are trying to understand how another cargo ship headed for the international space station blew up after liftoff from cape canaveral. it's a concern to nasa to the space station crew and the plans to turn over the missions to the private sector. nbc's tom costello is at the kennedy space center for us. good morning. >> reporter: hey, willie good morning. nasa is asking the people who live along florida's atlantic coast to call authorities if they find any rocket debris.

meanwhile, elon musk the founder of spacex said they're trying to figure out how and why this rocket came apart 2 minutes and 19 seconds into flight. this morning the investigation into how this seemingly picture perfect rocket launch suddenly went so wrong. the unmanned spacex falcon 9 seemed to vaporize over the florida coast. >> would appear to have had a large vehicle failure. >> reporter: it's the third time in eight months a cargo ship destined for the space station has been lost. last october, another private company's rocket up on liftoff. then in april, a russian progress ship with three tons of supplies was lost in orbit. on board the space station, astronaut scott kelly who tweeted watched dragon launched, sadly failed. space is hard. then he called his brother, mark

kelly. >> three of the cargo ships with a lot of his stuff. not only personal stuff, and clothing and food, but also supplies for some of the experiments and for upgrading the space station. >> reporter: also lost, water supplies a replacement space suit and parts for a water filtration system. but nasa claims they have enough food and water to last until the fall. >> they have done a tremendous job of balancing the consumables on orbit. >> reporter: the science experiments were gone again. >> the failure can be expected sometimes catastrophic ones but we won't let this deter us. >> reporter: a crew escape capsule is planned for the next rocket and spacex said had this been a manned mission they're confident that the astronauts would have been ejected away from the explosion. back to you. >> a lot of hopes are being placed in the spacex. tom costello thanks so much.

turn to natalie now. here with a tragic plane crash. >> that's right. frightening moments for a massachusetts neighborhood on sunday evening when a small plane slammed into a house, killing all three people on board the plane. it happened in plainville, south of boston. a family of four inside the home at the time managed to survive, fleeing before the flames engulfed their home. the faa says the plane took off from lancaster, pennsylvania it was headed to norwood, massachusetts. one neighbor said he heard the plane's engine sputtering before the crash. the ntsb arrived on the scene today to investigate. the law enforcement officials have been urged to be extra vigilant this week. there's heightened worries about home grown terrorism. and pete williams has the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning. officials stress that they know of no specific terror plots. instead they say this concern is based on two factors. first, the calendar. the obvious target that

americans birthday's celebration might present and this year the july 4th holiday comes during the holy month of ramadan. and some is aggressively calling for attacks during ramadan and around july 4th. the fbi is stepping up the pace of arrests, bringing in people who are under surveillance for months suspected of plotting attacks here. seven arrests in the past two weeks. and the secretary of homeland security, the you familiar advice -- enjoy yourself, but pay attention and if you see something, say something. natalie? >> all right, pete williams in washington for us, thank you. worshipers from a south carolina church were forced to relocate sunday services after their church was burned to the ground over the weekend. only a few charred pews remain from the fire that destroyed the missionary baptist church in warrendale. investigators are working to determine exactly what started the fire. the pastor says their faith and the help they have received from

other local churches are helping them to move past the tragedy. and at least a dozen homes have been destroyed and hundreds more evacuated as a fast moving brushfire moved across a washington state town on sunday. firefighters worked through the night to battle the flames, three helicopters were dropping water on the fire but they had to stop as night fell. the area is under a red flag warning for gusty winds as well as dry lightning. and if you park illegally in a handicapped spot a parking ticket might be the least of your worries. a driver in brazil returned to find it. blue post-its notes and the frustrated driver peeled a few of them off the windshield. also off the side window, before then eventually driving away. hard to miss the offender there though. i guess he learned a tough lesson. >> yeah. i don't know if he'll be trying

>> and that's your latest forecast. savannah? annual gay pride parades took on new meaning on sunday as people poured into the city streets to celebrate the supreme court's ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. over the weekend, comments on that decision from republican presidential candidates ranged from calls to respect the decision to support for an amendment that would reverse the ruling. texas senator ted cruz called it illegitimate and lawless. he would like a constitutional amendment that would abolish the lifetime appointment of supreme court just sises and allow voters the chance to remove them from the bench. cruz has a new book out called "a time to choose." thank you for joining us. can't think of a better time to have you as a guest with these consequential rulings coming down last week. you were quoted as saying these two decisions represented some of the darkest hours in american history. that took me aback. i can think of some pretty dark days 9/11 civil war, dread

scott. scott? >> what happened last week is twice, back-to-back majority of the justices on the u.s. supreme court violated their judicial oath. on thursday of last week the court rewrote obamacare, rewrote the statute, ignored the language of the statute and as a result forced millions of people into this failed law. millions of americans are hurting, have lost their jobs have lost their health care because of obamacare. the next day the supreme court rewrote the constitution and threw out the marriage laws of all 50 states. now, listen. i've spent my life fighting to defend the constitution and there is a constitutional means. if someone wants to change the marriage laws in the state, the way the constitution allows you to do so is to convince your fellow citizens to do so through the democratic process. what we saw instead is five unelected a lawyers saying the views of 320 million americans don't matter because they're going to enforce their own policy position. >> let me ask you about that. one thing you also said is you would support a texas state

clerk who refused to issue a license to a gay couple on religious grounds. let me ask you this. if a state clerk refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple would you agree with that too? >> well there's no religious backing for that. one of the things -- >> but you know that in the loving versus virginia case which struck down bans on interracial marriage they use religious arguments to justify that. >> there's no religious backing for that and i have spent decades fighting against bigotry and racial oppression. i'm the son of a cuban immigrant. bigotry is fundamentally wrong. one of the things i talk about in the book "a time for truth," is fighting to defend religious liberty. for me really liberty isn't just some new found campaign theme. i've spent two decades. when i was slit toreolicitor general for the state of texas, over and over again we fought and defended religious liberty and won, we defended the ten commandments and won, we defended the pledge of

allegiance and won. one thing i was really honored to do i represented over 3 million veterans defending the mo mohave desert and won. >> loving versus virginia struck down a state ban on interracial marriage. many people seem parallels with gay plarnlgmarriage. would you have taken that same position that it's not a constitutional rights and the states should have been free to ban interracial marriage if they wanted to? >> of course not. and we fought a bloody civil war. >> what's the difference in those two cases? >> it is exactly what i said that we fought a bloody civil war over the original sin of our country which was slavery. slavery was grotesque and immoral and some 600,000 americans spilled their blood on american soil and lost their lives to expunge it. we passed the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the

constitution that are to ensure that everyone has equal rights regardless of race. and that was honoring the promise of the constitution. it was the right thing to do. one of the things that in my book "a time for truth," i talk about is my time clerking at the u.s. supreme court, trying to give people a window to what happens behind the scenes. it is the same thing i try to do in the senate. we're giving people an understanding not just of what is said on the news but what's actually happening behind closed doors. the role of money and, sadly, the corruption of both republicans and democrats who join together in what i call the washington cartel. >> you talk about corruption money and politics yet you're suggesting this constitutional amendment that would subject supreme court justices to retention elections which sounds like injecting politics into the one branch of government the framers were very clear about. they did not want to have to be subject to the little bitpolitical women's.

>> let me be clear. the court has injected itself into politics. justice scalia wrote two powerful dissents. i would encourage everyone to read them where he says these decisions are a fundamental threat to democracy and he says five unelected lawyers have declared themselves the rulers -- >> would elections make it less political? >> what's interesting -- i wrote a long op-ed in "national review" laying out 20 states have adopted election retentions. one of the things justice scalia talks about, you've got nine lawyers, they're all from harvard or yale there are no protestants on the court, there are no evangelicals on the court. the elites on the court look over much of this country as fly hfr fly-over country. they think our views are parochial and don't deserve to be affected. justice scalia pointed out, what a crazy system to have the most

7:30 now on this monday morning, june 29th, 2015. a happy crowd kicking off their week in rockefeller plaza. back inside studio 1a the disco ball comes down here's a look at the headlines this morning. the big story we're following once again -- those escaped convicts and the convicted murderer david sweat has been caught he's in critical condition this morning after being shot by a new york state police officer near the canadian border. sweat and fellow inmate richard matt were on the run for three weeks after they broke out of prison. matt was shot and killed by police on friday. nasa is trying to figure out what caused the unmanned spacex falcon 9 rocket to explode over

the florida coast just minutes into the flight on a mission to carry supplies to the international space station. nasa insists the space station crew does have enough food and water to last until the fall. a dangerous wildfire burning in central washington. it is already damaged or destroyed several homes there. overnight new evacation orders were issued for some nearby neighborhoods. high-anxiety for beachgoers in north carolina after yet another shark attack. the latest victim a teenage boy who's now recovering. nbc's gabe gutierrez is on north carolina's outer banks. >> reporter: good morning. summer is apparently off to a dangerous start. six shark attacks in a month here in north carolina. just two weeks ago we were further south on the coast reporting on this. now this latest attack happened just down this beach. today many beachgoers are wondering whether this water is safe. this youtube video appears to show a seven-foot shark being reeled in by three fishermen friday on a crowded beach on

north carolina's outer banks. >> oh my god! >> reporter: the woman who shot the video tells nbc news it all happened about an hour's drive from where a shark viciously attacked a 47-year-old man the same day. >> the victim is on the beach now. respond for a shark bite. >> reporter: he spotted the shark while swimming and was franticly trying to warn others. >> on the beach, oceanside, caller's saying someone's been bitten by a shark. >> reporter: the very next day an 18-year-old nearly died after another shark attack. this morning he's improving. doctors have upgraded his conditions from critical to serious. on average, there are four or five shark bites a year off north carolina but just this month there have been six. 8-year-old brady survived with minor injuries but 12-year-old kirsten lost an arm. so did 16-year-old hunter. >> i didn't see it coming. i felt it on my leg. then i saw it once it had attacked my arm because it was out of the water a little bit.

>> the equation is shark plus human equals attack. >> reporter: experts like george burgess of the university of florida say warmer water and more vacationers play a role but now we're seeing more cell phone cameras on the beach recording every heart-stopping encounter. >> the reality is that we're not under siege by sharks and what we have of course then is a change in perception as opposed to a change in reality. >> reporter: now to put this in perspective, your odds of being involved in a deadly shark attack are 1 in 3.7 million. not sure how comforting that is but many people here in north carolina are staying out of the water for now. dylan, you got a check of the weather. >> out in phoenix yesterday we saw some pretty wild weather. another day with this dust storm that developed once these storms fire up then the winds kick up

all that dust. it reduces visibility. we had traffic having trouble on the roads because you couldn't see in front of you because of those storms. thousands were without power. we could see a similar set-up today with more thunderstorms likely that don't produce a lot of rain but do produce a lot of those gusty winds and causes some of those dust storms to develop. we also have some storms moving out of indiana and into ohio. columbus right now, you're still seeing some sun but the clouds will fill in and you will see a round of heavier rain within the next hour or two. we also have a chance in two areas to see strong storms -- up toward minneapolis and duluth as well. large hail and damaging dwind good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. we start out at 60 degrees this morning with some low clouds.

that can put those puzzle pieces together about that incredible prison escape just over three weeks ago. but for people in this area his capture is now a sign that they can finally rest easy. it's been a tense time here. >> certainly has. stephanie gosk in constable, new york thank you. world markets are reeling this morning because of the financial crisis in greece. the greek government has ordered banks closed there for six days and is limiting the amount of money that people can withdraw. tourists from the u.s. are among those struggling from a shortage of cash. the financial crisis in greece worsens when the european central bank refused to increase emergency credit. officials are trying to find out what caused sunday's massive explosion of an unmanned spacex rocket. the blast about two minutes into the flight destroyed the rocket and its cargo. more than two tons of supplies for the international space station. it is the third time in eight months that a cargo ship headed to the space station has been

lost. but nasa says the crew on the space station should have enough supplies to last until october. spacex says it will fix the problem and get back to flight. u.s. coast guard is investigating a tragic accident in maryland this morning. a 7-year-old girl was killed and seven people were injured at a speed boat race when a driver lost control and slammed the boat into spectator watching from both tethered together on chesapeake bay. the accident happened during the final race of the day. the solar impulse 2 is on the longest leg of its round the world attempts. the solar powered single seat plane took off today from japan, bound for hawaii. it should arrive there in five days if all goes well. it had been grounded for a month by bad weather. the solar impulse 2 left abu dhabi in march powered by more than 17,000 solar cells on its wings that recharge its batteries. the team is hoping it will be the first aircraft to fly around the world without fuel. she may be ugly but she is a

they have saved their body. in ten days. this is based on 22 teaspoons per day. this is over 4 1/2 cups of sugar. if the you look at the equivalent in terms of tack ets, 222. puts it in perspective. >> i am thinking more about the choices i make. >> that's what the whole idea of this detox was, to have a sharper eye as to how much sugar we're consuming in a day and now be more selective. so how do you do it? it's not so easy. the first thing is think before you automatically pop something in your mouth or cart. ask yourself do i need this? sometimes the answer is going to be no and then you're going to take a pass. the second thing that you can do is make a personal list of your non-negotiable must haves. we all have them. then you are going to figure out how to cut back or moderate. if the you put two packets of

on a boat. some people are going to see shades of diana i think in this story line. >> that's okay that they should see shades of diana in the character. she doesn't have a name. she's unnamed. i borrowed from a couple of different members of the royal family to create her. but the real impetus for the beginning of the novel is the assassination of lord bat tonton in 1889. >> he's form ira, former russian intelligence. how much of current events do you look at when writing these stories? >> i'm a former journalist inspired by the world around me endlessly fascinated by what's going on in the world today and i do borrow a lot from what's going on behind the headlines. the inspiration for this plot is true that after the war in northern ireland, a number of

very talented ira bombmakers went out into the world and sold their expertise to the highest bidder. and unfortunately, one of the places they ended up was the islamic republic of iran and they built sophisticated anti-tank weapons that were used by hezbollah against the israelis and they also built sophisticated roadside bombs that found their way into iraq. it is one of the sad ironies of the iraq war that british soldiers serving in southern iraq faced some of the same types of bombs that they faced in south ireland in the darkest days of the war. >> one thing i notice in this book there is a new layer in gabriel's life. not just a father but a twin. >> i go big with that character. >> what's that mean for gabriel here? >> it means that the character -- the readers know in this series gabriel is an art store owner. all of books deal with restoration in some capacity. the series it turns out, deals

shallots lemon. this smoked paprika, so smokey and so good. this is one of the key ingredients. little bit of cream. goat cheese -- i know that's not your favorite. we'll get there. >> this is intimidating. i like to buy shrimp peeled and already deveined. >> a way to save a little bit of money is not to buy them peeled and deveined. having said that you can buy them mostly that way. but on vacation sometimes you can't. don't be afraid of the knife. it loves you, you love it and you control it. take the shrimp rip the legs right off. get ahead of yourself. peel just right off. see how easily it comes off? i like to leave the tail on because then i think it makes it more festive, also easier to grab the shrimp. >> honey, that's skin. see how easy that is?

>> love. >> over that. lemon zest. the whole thing. four garlic cloves. a little bit of vegetable oil. the olive oil can kind of overpower. a little salt. that's it. that's the whole marinade. let this sit for 15 minutes. >> if you want to marinate it longer is that good? >> you can. i put it in the fridge if you're going to marinate longer. 15 minutes can stay at room temperature. then you take these. go with me on this adventure. >> yes, they're marinated. >> nothing really changes other than the flavor. i already oiled the grill. just put them on the grill. >> these didn't take too long. >> make sure that the grill is nice and hot. which it is. you just do two minutes on each side. don't overcook them because they get rubbery. >> this is the dip. >> this is the dip! so dip.

post" -- blood, sweat and cheers. after three weeks finally mpb lyly everybody saying thank goodness. richard matt was killed by police friday. david sweat was arrested after being shot 30 miles from the prison where he escaped. according to authorities authoritily after 3:00 p.m., new york state police sergeant jay cook called a hero by many was on his own, on patrol when he was a suspicious man jogging down the road. he was wearing fatigue pants. he recognized that it was david sweat and as sweat ran across an open field, cook opened fire, hitting him twice to prevent him from reaching a heavily wooded area. now it is not known when or where the pair split up but sweat's dna was found -- this is an interesting detail -- on pepper shakers not far from where matt was killed. police are saying they believe

that the prisoners used the pepper shakers to throw off their scent for the dogs. the tracking dogs. >> does that work? >> i don't know. but that's pretty smart to think of that. >> imagine you're sergeant cook, walking down a road by yourself. after three weeks of looking, wow there he is. >> all the cops came in and it was hundreds and hundreds of police officers descended. but to be the first guy there all alone and to see him coming -- running across the road toward you. pretty frightening. >> it's straight out -- you couldn't write this. it is insane. >> luckily had a good ending. >> there was another prison break over the weekend, a prison employee accused of helping someone else. this is going to set off a whole conversation of prison safety and what's going on in some of those jails. another story, this one on a

taking a look at the headlines. an important reminder for parents, as temperatures go up this summer doctors at vanderbilt university say the risk of heat stroke in children also rises. they say a child's body can heat up as much as five times faster than an adult. according to the group safe, an average of 37 children die a year from being left in a hot car. a new study suggests that the frequency of sex may be a factor in a man's risk of prostate cancer. the study presented at the american urological association say it doesn't necessarily lower the risk of dying from the

was very close to home. >> well this story doesn't actually mirror my story of coming out that closely. it's just that if you're butch -- which, look at me. i'm the poster child -- you have a shared life experience. i think that came out very well in the episodes. the difference being -- i had tension with my family because they were italian catholics but they learned. they grew to respect what i was and who i am. and learned. and i love them and we had a close relationship until the day they both passed. >> as natalie mentioned, this season we really get to dig behind the layers which is why i think the show has been so successful. we get to learn that there's more than what meets the eye. these women are behind bars, you probably wouldn't root for them but we find ourselves rooting for you. i can't stop looking at your body because you've been pregnant in that jump suit since

i met you. i kept looking at your tummy because your character has a real life moment with a baby and a lot of women behind bars experience that reality of of being a mom but your child is on the outside. >> which is interesting. because we tend to not think of you know pregnancy in prison but it is a fact. you know it is something that does occur. and i think the beauty of it is that you know she's learning while she's in jail. she should have learned before she was in jail. but that was not her environment. it's ironic she is learning her life lesson while she's in prison with her mother and, you know realizing how she has to make her own decisions and, you know take life seriously instead of a fairytale. >> and what's great about the show and the writing of this show is you see the relationships that women have behind bars. and karen, you have a great relationship with big boo. you're like a big sister little

sister relationship. right? >> yeah. she's guided her. making better choices. >> helping her along. >> yeah. >> we don't want to give too much away. i needed closure. i watched like marathon binge watching. the last two episodes you won't sleep. you talk about religion in here. you talk about history of where these women have come from. your character really goes through some changes with religion. >> absolutely. i think that you know everyone in prison's journey is all about survival. and faith really comes into play when you're trying to survive in prison because you need something to hold on to. you need something to live for every day. so you know coming off-season two, she's been a little beaten down. she needs something to hold on. to she needs something to live for every day. and we see that mirrored in all of the prisoners.

but, yeah she sort of gets mixed up in funny like sort of cult thing it turns out. >> yeah. very strange story line. >> but good intentions. >> okay. but on a girly note. we love to dress up. how happy are you to be out of the jump suit? i mean how good does it feel you leave work and you're like i'm out of that? >> i don't know. it's like going to work in pajamas. >> nobody likes the boots. nobody likes the boots. >> yeah. >> your character, lauren you're all about the girly girl and having the hair and makeup. >> i guess i'm the least girly girl. i like the jump suit. i can eat lunch in this. >> she's a girly girl. >> but i'm kind of like i don't know what i'm doing. >> oh, my gosh. >> the show just amazing. the season is getting better and better. i lot of characters.
