breaking overnight- a car bomb rocks afghanistan's capital overnight. details on breaking overnight, a car bomb rocks afghanistan's capital. details on the dozens injured and who was targeted. and a south bay shooting right in the thick of a popular shopping area that has investigators now canvassing that neighborhood. just into our newsroom, strike called off. the 11th hour deal preventing santa clara county workers from from walking off the job. >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." it is 4:30 right now, i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. we do have a lot to get to this morning, but first we begin with a look at your forecast and meteorologist kari hall as that
4:31 am
heat is rising. >> good morning. it's all about the heat today as we get ready for a really hot one. check out these numbers and where we're expected to be later on this afternoon. 102 degrees may be the thing that jufrs out at you for the tri-valley, south bay 95 degrees and the peninsula 86 degrees. breezy this afternoon. san francisco reaching 74 degrees. so it will be a day that starts the sizzle, but the heat peaks tomorrow. i'll talk more about that and the look at the rest of the microclimate forecast, including the 4th of july weekend, that's coming up in a few minutes. right now let's get a look at how the roads are flowing. you see the easy light drive 880 through fremont. let's talk about the nim pits. the southbound 80 at alvarado boulevard, reports of an earlier crash. i saw flashing lights heading up to the scene but i travel south of there and we didn't see any
4:32 am
slowing. light traffic flow from that shot. it doesn't sound like there are any lanes blocked. as you would expect very light easy drive for the rest of your bay as well with just a little start for a little slowing west 580 out of the altamonte. maybe some activity closer toward oakland. we will to he will that up. moving south now, we are following breaking news just into our newsroom, a last minute deal that is going to prevent a massive strike in the south bay. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang is live in san jose with the late breaking details of that agreement. they were supposed to walk off the job in just a couple of hours but they seem to have reached some sort of compromise. >> reporter: they have, kris and sam. there was a 3:00 a.m. led line. after hours of negotiating the good news is no strike. it would have happened as early as 6:00 this morning had no agreement been reached, but, again, overnight a last minute deal with both sides, the county of santa clara and the union reaching a tentative agreement
4:33 am
that covers four years. both the board of supervisors as well as the union members still have to vote to approve it. dozens of sciu members rallied last week after 75% of those voting authorized the strike, approving an open-ended one, that would have meant there would have been no end date. the union roufls 9,000 county workers, 911 ditch patchers to hospital workers at valley medical center. the employees have said pay has been far too little for them and their families to continue living in santa clara county. adding the work has grown since the recession. there was a 35% staff shortage within several areas including social services, 911 communications and public health nurses. the strike would not have included 475 essential employees. a court had ruled yesterday that they would have to report to work. before the weekend county leaders had said the budget is tight but they were confident both sides could reach an agreement and indeed that is
4:34 am
what happened overnight. avert ago strike. this would have been the first one of its kind in more than 40 years. live in san jose, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." and now to more breaking news that we're following this morning. this time out of afghanistan. the taliban is claiming responsibility for a suicide bombing near the u.s. embassy in kabul. one citizen level was filled this this this attack, 22 others were hurt including women and children. u.s. military members managed to escape that car bomb. the attack did target a nato convoy, it happened less than a half file from the embassy. a shooting in a busy part of town, a lot of people to go their shopping here. we're talking about an area offer of the almaden expressway where police say a man was shot. >> "today in the bay" is bob redell is live in san jose with what we know this morning. is there a danger to the public, bob? >> reporter: not as much according to san jose police.
4:35 am
someone shot a man -- person, sam, in this area we're at, almaden expressway, you can see the highway over behind me. video into our newsroom shows san jose police shutting down this section of roadway as they searched for the suspect last night and also for evidence, such as a bullet casing. police received a call around 10:40 from via monte drive, once they arrived officers found a man who had been shot at least once, was taken to the hospital, no indication how serious his wounds are. it appears that he was shot here on almaden and then continued on to the via monte location. san jose police are still looking for the suspect. they are not indicating what led us up to this shooting. bob redell, "today in the bay" now to no developing story, authorities in indonesia now say a military plane crash has claimed the lives of 37 people. that plane went down this morning in madan that's
4:36 am
indonesia's third largest city. the plane was carrying 12 crew members and 50 passengers. it is unclear what caused that crash. back here in the bay area today federal investigators will dig deeper into how a routine helicopter flight went terribly wrong. the coast guard was to go a test yesterday hovering only ten feet above the ground at s if fo, but when the pilot tried to land there was some malfunction and the chopper crashed on to its side. both the pilot and flight-nick are okay. >> there was some damage to the fuselage of the helicopter. as far as the extent of the damage, i don't know. the good thing is two of our crew members were not damaged. >> the coast guard says this was unfortunately one of their newer helicopter. it did not effect operations at s if fo. the balcony that collapsed in berkeley killing six people earlier this month passed an inspection less than a year ago.
4:37 am
that's according to documents the city released yesterday. the structural inspector marked the balcony supports as being in good condition last august, though the report does not say how deep that analysis was. 13 people were on the balcony when it collapsed, missouri of them students from ireland. investigators discovered dry rot in the support beams after the collapse. now to a developing story in a fast moving wildfire that's already destroyed at least two dozen homes and four businesses in the pacific northwest. the sleepy hollow fire is burning about 50 miles east of seattle. flames wiped out one neighbor today. before and after now shows you just how destructive that fire is. about 3,000 acres scorched. taking out a downtown recycling plan. so far it's only about 10% contained. >> that was a shocking picture to see that cul-de-sac and driveway and houses -- >> charred and flattened, yes. meteorologist kari hall is here with the forecast that
4:38 am
could increase our fire danger given how hot it's going to be. >> hopefully we don't have any concerns like that, but temperatures will be going way up over the next couple of days. we do have a little fog on the bay this morning. visibility, though, is much clearer than we had yesterday at this time as you head inland to the valley you do see that it is all clear this morning and then over towards the north bay a little bit more fog will near the coast. over the next couple of days high pressure boosts the temperatures and with this bringing in more of a southwesterly wind that weakness the on-shore flow and our temperatures will be going up, up, and up. now, i wouldn't be surprised if we hit well over 100 degrees, possibly up to 108 degrees by tomorrow. as we go through the day we see those temperatures starting to go up into the 70s, 80s and 90s, even some triple digits later on this afternoon in the tri-valley and parts of the far east bay. i will talk more about that,
4:39 am
what to expect over the next few days, including the weekend coming up in a few minutes. right now let's check in with mike. impressive numbers. looking over here toward the bay bridge we to like this, an unimpress ifl light drive. let me show you the span from emeryville we're looking at that beautiful tower and beautiful flow of traffic across inter state 80, no problems for the bay bridge. we will show you overall the bay looks really light as you would expect right now, just some crews, typical spots this san jose and also over in oakland. i'm zooming into southbound 880, still have that crash on the chp blotter as you're passing by alvarado. the on ramps might be affected and the tow trucks should be arriving any ekd is. also there was a little mud slide reported -- hill slide i should say eastbound 80 around highway 4, that's the upper east shore freeway but i don't see slowing. let's look at the san mateo bridge. a nice drive westbound. there are those headlights to the foster city side, the peninsula has no delays and no

4:44 am
to skip vaccinations. some parents are already threatening lawsuits. >> this bill puts government in between parents and doctors and i want to be the one deciding what goes into my child's body. >> tworcher brown's office released a statement saying that vaccinations are, quote, profounding important and he will closely consider the measure. he has a little less than two weeks to decide whether nt to sign the bill or reject it. a bay area kindergartner 'tis nated at school because ever his haircut. that is the accusation from the five-year-old's family. the suit claimed that jay listen was told he could not come to immaculate heart of mary school in belmont with this haircut. jay listen's mother said she had to bring him home to hospital because the prisoner told her his haircut might be a distraction in school. the school's poll ss sees on acceptable hairstyles are very clear. 4:44. the investigate's decision to

uphold oklahoma's death penalty could restart california prison's efforts to resume executions. california has 750 inmates on death row, but the state has not executed a single person in nearly a decade. prison officials are now considering a new single drug lethal injection cocktail or rather i should say than the drug cocktail administered previously. the supreme court ruled yesterday that oklahoma could continue using lethal injection after death penalty opponents sued, claiming that it constituted cruel and unusual punishme punishment. president obama wants millions more americans to be eligible for overtime. the president is said to propose a plan to extend overtime pay to 5 million workers who are currently excluded under federal law. he will recommend updating overtime rules for that salaried workers who earn less than $50,000 a year, be guaranteed time and a half pay when they work more than 40 hours a week. under the current rules salaried workers must earn less than $24,000 a year to get ot.
4:46 am
a lot of people working overtime right now trying to figure out what's going to happen in europe as investors are worried, a little skiddish about that growing financial crisis. >> for that and a the rest of the news before the bell we turn to landon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters. what are folks saying about greece? >> we're talking debt, debt and more debt. stocks are poised to rebound after the markets suffered their worst day of the year as investors react to greece's debt crisis, they're also unfervd by a continued sell off in china's markets and a warning that puerto rico may not be able to pay its $72 million inxfek"tsp'.

arizona right now is going to pay more than $600,000 to the families of the firefighters who tied in the yarnell hill wildfire two years ago. today marks two years since the team of 19 firefighters trapped and killed by fast moving flames. a lawyer for the families told the u.s. today the settlement was not about assigning blame. instead, the families just wanted transparency and more importantly they wanted change. it is 4:47 right now.
4:48 am
meteorologist kari hall is watching a forecast that is very hot. we were looking at your map. the more colorful it gets we mow the hotter it's going to be. >> we've seen the temperatures really fluctuating. this week it goes up for the middle of the week and then comes back down in time for the weekend, kind of like what we saw last week. right now we are in the 60s as you walk out the door. i know in the tri-valley when you wake up and are heading to work and it's 66 degrees you know it's going to be a hot day. in san francisco 56 degrees right now. and heading up to 77 degrees later today. now, we could see some triple digits in the tri-valley and the south bay as well. most areas, though, getting up to 95 degrees in the peninsula reaching 86 degrees. breezy in some spots but unfortunately we don't have the strong on-shore flow that we normally have. here is the wind forecast and these arrows show the wind direction coming in from the northwest. we can see that the winds really don't get that strong as we go through the day and our
4:49 am
temperatures will be heating up, especially the farther inland you are. high pressure is in this control and it's keeping that on-shore flow at bay and into the next couple of days that high pressure just builds, but slowly moves to the east. so in time for the weekend we will see a little bit of relief, but look at how hot it could get between today and tomorrow in the -- reaching over 100 degrees. then 90s for the south bay, the parts of the east bay and the authority bay and 80s, even warm along the coast. but later this week as high pressure moves away it may be just enough to pull in some of that monsoonal moisture across at least the sierra, but as we've had some very hot weather, a lot of that could be evaporating and could create a lightning threat for the end of the week. so not very good news, but hopefully we can squeeze out at least a little bit of that rain. into the next three days here is the forecast with highs reaching into the 90s, once again we
4:50 am
could see some triple digits across parts of the bay. try to stay cool out there today, sam and kris. >> we will be doing a lot of this. >> yeah. you will soon pay more to drive across one of the most iconic bridges in the world. starting tomorrow fares go up 25 cents on the golden gate. carpool fares also going up to $4.25. the fare will keep rising over the next few years to help close the bridge's budget testify sit. yet another reason why you should get a fast track. you you are getting a big buck discount. while we're talking about inflation and things that keep going up, healthy food, especially the org if i can kind, can price some families out of th%laaaúd market. enter a new super grocer, selling fresh food at deep discounts. what's the catch here? how can they do it and stay in business? we have the answer.
4:51 am
we're looking over here, the answer, smooth driving. the question, what's it look like by the coliseum? another question, what's it look like by the disabled vehicle in down down oakland? we'll track that as welcoming up.
4:52 am
4:53 am
welcome back, time is ... (adlib)
4:54 am
welcome back. coming up on 4:54 right now. a live look outside at san jose for the next couple of days you're going to want to have water and sunscreen handy. now, this will be a difficult task here in the next two days. if you love citrus, stay out of the sun. researchers found a surprising link between citrus and skin cancer. researchers from brown university looked at the diets of more than $100,000 americans. nearly 2000 people developed melanoma and all hadding something in common, they consumed lots of grapefruit and orange juice. people who had 1 to 2 serves a day were 66% more likely to get melanoma. all the health benefits about drinking orange juice, that's a shocking revelation. >> you can still have your margarita if you have sunscreen. >> or stay inside. which never too early for that. well, it is too early at 4:54.
4:55 am
not during happy hour. or if you're skyping with someone in another time zone. looking over here, but not if you're driving. 880 does move slowly, you do see a good volume of traffic, lighter volume for the nimitz. up to downtown, the concern is that there is a stall reported somewhere around that fifth avenue offamp there in downtown, somewhere between 5th and 29th. i'm getting two reports, they sound like the same vehicle blocking the slow lane. north of the bay bridge, eastbound 80 at highway 4 there was an earlier report of some sort of hill slide, reports of dirt and mud this two lanes. now, if that is the case it must be a busted sprinkler, but chp has been heading out there. i have no update and no slowly. we will track that countercommute through that area. that early crash from 880 cleared. we will show you the light volume of traffic throughout the south bay.
4:56 am
north 101, you know this traffic shot. back to you. in a country where one in six people struggled to find today one grocery store is doing what many people thought was impossible, selling fresh, healthy food for a cheap price. the daily table has customers doing double takes at the price tags. 29 cents a pound for bananas, a buck for a dozen eggs, but how are they doing it? by selling food near its he can operation date and pricing it for quick sale. >> many of the items that we have at talley table if we hadn't gone out to collect them or if other food recovery groups hadn't gone out to collect hem they end up in compost or landfills. >> the former president of trader joe's says that the goal of the store is to help income families realize the benefit of fresh food. right now there's only one store in massachusetts, no word on when it will expand. certainly a lot of people watching that model.
4:57 am
