south of gilroy but the flames are not the biggest problem this morning. turn off the ac or at least turn it up. why we're asked to conserve power on one of the hottest days of the year. yeah, very hot this morning, as we see the sun rise over san jose. bright orange and orange on the map, too, more coming up in the microclimate forecast. it's clear for inland valleys, fog over the golden gate bridge. i'm anthony slaughter in for mike inouye. tracking morning roads. we'll let you know what's happening this morning. >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning. and thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia-cannon is off this morning. >> i'm sam brock. we'll start right now with how hot and not hospitable the conditions respect today's going to be hotter than yesterday was. a live look outside right now at san jose, as we take it all in.

south bay bracing for what could be again triple digit heat. >> we have team coverage for you from a flex alert to fire concerns. but we begin with kari hall with when those heat weave may break. >> it breaks into the next couple of days. time for the fourth of july weekend. cheering for that. but today we have to make it through these temperatures. 100 degrees expected for the east bay. in the inland valleys. and 90s for concord and livermore and parts of the north bay and south bay. and then in the 80s, even for the peninsula and san francisco today, the 70s only for the coastal areas. and the heat will break after today, but this heat advisory continues until 9:00 this evening. and that's where temperatures could soar as high as 109 degrees today. and drink lots of fluid and limit time outdoors, especially for the afternoon during those hottest times of the day.

start out with temperatures already in the lower 70s for the tri-valley. san francisco now at 56 degrees. a look at some of the microclimates now, pick out where you live and the temperature today and that's when you want to start to make plans for the weekend. it will be much cooler than what we'll see today. i'll talk more about that coming up in the microclimate forecast. right now back to you, sam and kris. >> hot temperatures are a major concern as firefighters are still trying to put out a brushfire burning now for 15 hours. this happening south of gilroy near highway 25. while the firefighters are battling the flames, people as far away as san jose are struggling to breathe. with more on this developing story, bob redell live from gilroy. bob, you were saying you can smell the smoke though not as much as perhaps yesterday. >> reporter: that's the sense i get. good morning. as people wake up here, in gilroy, maybe they'll feel the

same way. yes you, can smell the smoke in the air. as we look into foothills, haiz does not appear to be as thick as it was yesterday. capture that image in your mental mind right now and go to this video here. you compare it to last night. this is video from the gilroy sports park where men were playing soccer, in spite of the trouble they had breathe in the smoky air. this is the fire burning ten miles south of gilroy. others in town yesterday found respite from the bad air by going indoors where the air was obviously cleaner. >> it was really overwhelming to breathe it, and then also to inhale it through my nose, it was really impacting. >> stifling and kind of hard to breathe a little bit. burned my eyes. >> 200 firefighters on the scene of the fire burning down 101, 10 miles south of gilroy. the later numbers from cal fire,

50 acres burned and about 50 acres contained. behind the camera position now, i see cal fire trucks about six units heading north, i'm assuming that's the shift change for this morning as the new units replenish those that have been out there all day yesterday. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> it's not just a south bay problem but a bay area wide issue now. firefighters plenty busy in benicia as well. crews stumbled upon flame as long 680 and sweltering temperatures. the fire right there burning a mile away from another gas fire. sparked by a truck fire. all of that smoke made a hot day feel hotter, as temperatures reached and exceeded 100 degrees throughout the area. fire officials reminding us, it's important to leave defensible space around your homes, clearing any grass within 100 feet. problems with power, the hot temperatures are putting a strain on our power grid. so much so, state officials are

asking all of us to conserve a little bit. >> "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live in the tri-valley. they're not saying don't crank the ac, you can't have it as cold as you want it. >> reporter: that's right. it's very tempting especially in places like livermore, close to what hit 110 yesterday, can get close to that today and feel even more humid. families likely to bring their kids to lizzie fountain in downtown where the water shoots up in different places, provides relief for the kids. a popular go-to two years ago to the day last time northern california has a flex alert in place what happen that means, the state wants people to avoid certain power usage until tonight. now air conditioner use during a heat wave can put a substantial strain on the california power grid. some recommendations in place through 9:00 tonight include, you can use ac but set it at 78 degrees or higher. turn off any unnecessary lights and don't use major appliances,

you might remember, nbc bay area broke this story last year. accused of taking bribes from undercover fbi agents in exchange for legislative favors and agreeing to import firearms. today, a change of plea hearing is scheduled which means that yee may have struck a deal with prosecutors. new this morning, fremont police need help catching the woman who attacked another woman, stealing her purse and iphone. this happening at fremont hub shopping center monday. police say the victim was walking on the sidewalk when a woman walked up behind her. that's when police threw her to the ground by the hair, punched her, stole all of her possessions. a walnut creek police on the prowl for copper thieves targeting toyota owners. swiped catalytic converters in past two days. those thefts focused on three streets, citrus, walnut, and springfield drive.

all of the catalytic converters stolen in late night hours. those converters can cost thousands to replace but have high value for recyclers. police looking at s surveillance video, hoping to capture whoever vandalized this. it's located in the mission district. someone lit fire to it. you can see the burn marks on the left side of the screen. this is the fourth time someone damaged the artwork in the past month or so. the new fiscal year means several new state laws take effect. the one that impacts the most the california paid sick leave bill. that legislation will allow all full and part-time employees who worked 30 days three paid sick leaves a year. california will phase in a ban on lead ammunition by barring its use for hunting in certain areas. all smartphones manufactured and sold starting today have to have

a remote controlled kill switch to make devices less attract toib thieatrabltractive to thie. library branches will stay open an additional two days a week. up until now, the libraries were only open four days a week, but now we're going up to six. couldn't happen at a better time. very nice place to stay cool. the city hopes changes will bring thousands more people into the public library system. >> maybe learn a little thing or two while there. state lawmakers are looking at the environmental cost of supplying california's million of marijuana users, that coming in response to reports that illegally grown pot plants are guzzling up billions of gallons of water on the north coast. pot farmers are damming streams and diverting creeks to provide water to those crops. one consequence, north coast salmon fisheries are running dry. more than 85,000 pot plants were

clara county's waking up to a new year, fiscal year. the county assessor will do his job and assess the fiscal year now in the books. among the new topics for the assessor, the first year of levi's stadium the county will get its first real look at what monetary impact the stadium's having on county revenues. the stadium opened up last july with an earthquakes so game. >> nothing like watching the ball drop on january 1st. the fbi's investigating a dozen cases where someone physically cut those fiber-optic cables here in the bay area. those attacks go back to late last year but the latest happened yesterday morning. investigators say someone broke into an underground vault in livermore and cut three cables there. that in turn cut off phone, tv, and internet service to people in the sacramento area and as far north as seattle. the fbi is not releasing much more information about that attack because of the ongoing investigation.

>> it is no longer just talk, greece is now in default. yesterday it failed to pay $2 billion payment to the internet monetary fund. >> so, what happens next? scott mcgrew, say for the moment greece is a sick patient. what are we talking about now? >> we're talk about the banks. banks in greece are the heart beat on the patient. they're the signal we're looking for to determine if greece continues as a functional eu country. the big news, the banks are back open limited to one customer in the bank at a time. new video this morning. i wouldn't say that's an orderly line but people do not seem to be in full panic mode, either. the government's trying to prevent a run on the bank. that's when everybody takes their money all out at once. no bank can handle that, not even your bank. normally if there were too many withdrawals greek banks would ask the european central bank to truck in money, we need to borrow euros to temporarily cover our customers.

>> microclimate forecast. live outside. bay bridge from emeryville. you might want to hunker down with a book, close to your cooling unit. kari hall, heat advisory. it it is serious business, in addition -- there yes. most people don't realize the number one killer in the u.s. is heat. you know, it really causes a lot of problems because people just don't pay attention to what their body is telling them. drink lots of water, take breaks if you feel light-headed and just once again, just be extra mindful of what's going on today as with high temperatures. as we start out the morning, we do see mainly clear conditions. and beautiful as you walk out the door. but it won't be so nice later on today, especially if you're in the inland valleys where temperatures are expected to heat up to over 100 degrees. tri-valley, 109. san francisco today, very warm,

80 degrees. although we are seeing more clouds there, and the peninsula today reaching 94 degrees. i think humidity will be higher today, too. and we have such a weak onshore flow. it's not fighting back this heat. but then as we go into the afternoon, the winds at 10 to 15 miles an hour along the coast. and then inland area you don't see winds picking up today. heat will continue to build as we go through today as well as tomorrow. i think by tomorrow, we'll start to see more cloud cover, as we see showers and storms firing up across the sierra, it will be enough to let clouds drift our way, not back temperatures from climbing into the 90s and triple digits like we'll see today. pattern changes ahead. just in time for the holiday weekend. valley temperatures anywhere from the 90s to 100 degrees today. and then tomorrow into the weekend, a stronger onshore flow giving us low clouds and morning fog. independence day looking nice.

leland yee back in court today, and there is a chance he may have made a plea deal on his corruption charges. happening today, a major step forward for the u.s. and for cuba. president obama is expected to announce the united states is going to reopen an embassy in havana, and cuba is going to open one in the u.s. as well. with more, we bring in "today in the bay's" tracie potts live from washington, d.c. this is the next step, congress still very divided on restoring relation with cuba. >> skeptics on this. in an hour and a half we'll hear president obama make that announcement himself. but from here, could be a bit of an uphill battle, getting that embassy funded. after more than half a century, president obama's expected to announce later this morning that the u.s. is reopening its embassy in havana. >> it's going to be great. >> reporter: cuba taken off the list of states that sponsor

heading to somewhere where the ac is blasting in public areas. una heat advisory until 9:00 for all of the areas in red. that continues until this evening, and then the temperatures come down, and it is looking better for tomorrow and the next several days. but if we can make it through today, when temperatures reach 107 degrees today in gilroy, burlingame, 79 degrees. one of the cool spots, ocean beach, 64 today. the mission district reaches into the lower 80s. napa today, 97 degrees. and oakland, 82 degrees. and livermore, once again, reaching over 100 degrees, reaching 109 today. i think the humidity will be a little bit higher, so that will make it feel worse than it did yesterday. now the heat breaks for the end of the week. i'll talk more about that coming up in the next microclimate forecast. a look at roads with anthony. >> good morning. things are light this morning. we don't have major accidents

just stalls on area roads. start off with the tri-valley through the altamont pass. things are starting to throw slew livermore. not really affecting traffic all that much it one of the spots that starts to slow. not unusual. coming through san jose, things are starting to slow there. coming through 101, that's where we have another stall. you can see, outside, not affecting traffic all that much. traffic is starting to slow. talk about the stalls on the area roads you can see the impa impact, that one car off to the side, not a huge problem but heads up, watch out for folks as they try to get the stalls out of the roads. no major accidents. >> avoid pulling off on to the dry grass, that would be very good. >> thank you. it is 6:35. still ahead -- cracking cold cases. one company trying to solve the country's most difficult crimes. live look at the big board.

into a crowd neighborhood. investigators are looking into whether some passengers skirted rules that prohibit anyone except for military members and their families from flying on those planes. new this morning, more evidence of an alarming trend in the war against terror. ten people arrested in italy, accused of trying to trojoin th islamic state. the suspects detained in three major italian cities and unnamed albanian city, landing to travel to syria to fight with isis. several dozen citizens have joined the ranges of isis in the last year. a fire that destroyed an african-american church in south carolina does not appear to be arson. the fire broke out last night at mt. zion african methodist church in south carolina. 20 years ago, the cku klux klan set fire to very church.

since last month's shooting rampage at emanuel ame church, there have been six black churches set on fire. three of those are believed to be arson. a situation that is changing by the meant in washington state. fire officials say they are slowly making progress on a massive wildfire that's burned 3,000 acres so far. 29 homes destroyed. as of this morning, the flames are about 50% contained. that's up 10% from yesterday. no word what sparked the blaze but wenatchee's mayor said a fireworks ban will likely be announced ahead of the holiday. >> about 30 miles away from that fire, firefighters are dealing with a new fire that started near the town of quincy, washington. in a few short hours, that fire ballooned to 2000 acres as it burns through dry brush and grasp it is only 2% contained. the cause is unknown. using new technology to solve cold cases.

we've arrived here in gilroy, that smell is certainly not as bad as it was when we first got around here around 4:00 this morning. you can see, looking at the foothills, as we get the sunrise, you're not seeing as much haze. ha maybe, maybe better for today. it cool now as heat expected as kari hall has been telling us about, we could see it get worse. this is the source of the smell in gilroy. and it not the garlic, unfortunately, it's this brushfire burning since yesterday, ten miles south of here. latest numbers telling us it's 50 acres burned and so far, 50% contained. but this is the problem it was causing yesterday. video from last night at gilroy sports park, you can see the dirty air sitting there over the stadium lights as men played a vigorous game of soccer in spite of the trouble having breathing. >> a lot of smoke.

>> reporter: that's right. yes, steps to take avoid a blackout, in which no one can access ac. last time we had a flex account was two years the power grid operators are warning a major strain could have a possibility at least until 9:00 tonight. some recommendations during the alert include turning off unnecessary lights, not using major appliances and you can use the air conditioner but 79 degrees or higher. effect of this is it can save up to 1000 megawatts of electricity, enough power for 1 million households. fleck alert in effect from 2:00 until 9:00 tonight. it will get more comfortable the fourth of july weekend.

we have a couple of accidents starting to pile up. altamont pass, past 84, slow towards tracy. we have a pair of stalls on 880 southbound near hayward on to the san mateo bridge, things slower there. south bay, a stall on the northbound side of 101. as you cut over, if you're taking 17, switches over to 880, an accident there. but not impacting traffic all that much. take you outside, show you what it's looking like from 101 perspective. there's a stall, not affecting traffic. this is a typical slow spot we see traffic build. a typical slowing as we're used to seeinging. further north on 101 into palo alto. northbound side, things moving smoothly. traffic does ease up especially we don't have major accidents. southbound, smoothly. best news, traffic not all that bad.

we could be looking at worse conditions. i can recall a few days. >> i like it. glass half full. happening today, it is back to court for former state senator leyland lee and he could be taking aplea deal. nbc bay area broke this story last year. yee is accused of taking bribes from undercover fbi agents in exchange for legislative favors and agreeing to import firearms. yee has pleaded not guilty. however a change of plea hearing scheduled for today, which could mean that yee has struck a deal with prosecutors. >> police need help catching a woman who attacked another woman stealing her purse and iphone at fremont hub shopping center monday. the victim was walking along when a woman came up behind her. that's when police say she threw her to the ground by the hair, punched the woman and stole all of her stuff. in san francisco, police are looking for a violent bike thief. his crime caught on camera. the suspect seen here wearing a

white t-shirt, rushed in to the san fran cyclo bike shop monday. grabbed $1000 bike. the manager tried to stop him. that's when the thief punched him and took off. if you recognize the man, they want to hear in you. walnut creek police on the prowl for copper thieves targeting toyota owners. they swiped catalytic convert converters. they'ves on three streets, citrus, walnut avenue, springfield drive. catalytic converters can cost thousands to replace. this morning, the fbi is investigating nearly a dozen cases where someone physically cut fiber-optic cables in the bay area. attacks go back to last year but the latest happened this morning.

rather yesterday morning. investigators say someone broke into an underground vault in livermore and cut three tables than cut off phone, tv, internet service to people in the sacramento area and even as far north as seattle. the fbi is not releasing much information about the attack because it is an ongoing investigation. vandals struck again in san francisco specifically this mural a piece of art celebrating lgbt and latino culture in the mission district. monday night someone lit it on fire. you can see burn marks on the left-hand side of the mural. this is the fourth time that someone has damaged the artwork in the last month or so. the art gallery's executive director says whomever did was caught on camera and police have the video and using it for their investigation. the company that is now under fire for the deadly berkeley balcony collapse will argue this morning for a temporary restraining order against investigators are. segue construct wanted to keep

prosecutors from testing the evidence without having company representatives present. in its court filing, evidence might have been damaged in the removal of the balcony after collapse. one legal expert believes this filing might be a preemptive move to replace possible criminal charges. >> if the d.a.'s office files charges and conduct destructive testing on the balcony, what could happen is the defense could later say you've jeopardized our ability to defend ourselves. >> city investigators say they discovered severe dry rot in the balcony, causing it to tear off, killing six. the dry rot would have resulted from water expose sure. new fiscal year means several new state laws take effect, impacting california's new paid sick leave bill. legislation will allow all full-time and part-time employees who have worked 30 days 3 paid sick leave days a year.
