it's thursday july 2nd coming up on early today, break news in tennessee where a derailed train carrying a chemical compound causes 5,000 to be evacuated. just days before the biggest beach day of the year a seventh shark attack off the carolina coast. now macy's and a growing numb of celebs are distancing themselves from donald trump. but his political poll numbers are rising. before fireworks light up the sky, americans will spend big bucks on the holiday weekend. and a very unlucky boot for the brits in extra time "early today" starts right now. >> good morning, we begin with breaking news in tennessee, a csx freight train carrying a highly flammable gas derailed

after midnight and caught fire. 5,000 people in the maryville area of tennessee have been evacuated as a result. seven firefighters were reportedly take ton a local hospital after breathing in fumes. hazmat and emergency management officials are on scene right now. the red cross is using a local high school as a shelter for residents who have no other place to go. earlier, we heard from one of the workers at that shelter. >> we probably got about 150 in here now. we could handle several hundred people here. if we have to. we'll open up another shelter nearby. we're going to be here until the emergency is over and everybody has a place to go. >> we'll keep you updated on the story. we're learning new information about the moments leading up to a plane crash in taiwan earlier this year. dash cam video caught this transasia airways plane before it crashed into a river killing 43 people in february. we know the captain switched off the plane's only working engine seconds before the crash. a new report shows the captain

had previously failed simulator training in may of 2014. just two days away from the biggest beach weekend of the year and there are major fears about what lurks below the waves. nbc's rehema ellis reports. >> it's happened again -- beachgoers in north carolina stunned after the third shark attack in a week in the outer banks, this time on okracoke island island. >> the lifeguards spent a lot of time with the victim. >> a 67-year-old man was swimming in waist-deep water with his son when a lifeguard said a shark took him under the water biting him several times in his leg, hip and both hands. on twitter, hyde county officials said the man was able to swim to shore where lifeguards helped him out of the water. lynnette holman was there with her family. >> we knew on the beach it was a shark attack or a shark bite. and so you know obviously everybody got out of the water.

>> another witness posting pray for the victim great first responders. in north carolina this is the seventh confirmed shark attack in three weeks. among the victims, an 18-year-old who nearly died in june. a 12-year-old and a 16-year-old each lost an arm. an 8-year-old survived with minor injuries. officials say there are no plans to close the beaches, but emergency medical crews will be on standby for the holiday weekend. rehema ellis, nbc news. and there is another huge source of anxiety this morning as we head into the holiday weekend. the increased risk of terror attacks, especially on big gatherings "the today show's" savannah guthrie got a look at the fourth of july security preparations with the nypd's chief of counterterrorism. >> on the one hand we're showing all of the security which can make people feel better but sometimes might make them feel more afraid. what's your message to somebody who wants to come out in new

york and watch the fireworks? >> we want to assure them they can come and watch the fireworks and celebrate the country and be secure and confident in the police department and the other agencies that are going to police this event. >> now to nbc's tracie potts who is live in waesh for us. what can law enforcement do without any specific threats so far? >> they can bump up surveillance on the people they're already wash watching in this country. but we are learning that there is a heightened concern this year because the fourth of july holiday coincides with another holiday. and that is bringing more much more concern. >> nbc got a behind-the-scenes look at security preparations in new york. >> we're on guard 24 hours a day, seven days a week. >> especially this year the fourth of july coincides with ramadan, muslim holy days isis is calling for attacks. >> isil is a whole different

inspiring others. individuals already here to do these attacks on their own. dara? >> tracie potts in d.c. thank you for that report. now have you ever wondered why you're paying so much for airline tickets? turns out you're not alone. the justice department wants to know whether major airlines are illegally coordinating one another to limit capacity and keep prices high. nbc's tom costello reports. >> the justice department is looking into whether some airlines have been colluding, agreeing to limit capacity to maintain ticket prices and profits. the doj telling nbc news we're investigating possible unlawful coordination by some airlines. and often hearse airline ceos ajd analysts talk about capacity discipline. a code word. >> basically saying don't grow your airline, don't add seats, get rid of routes where you don't have your flights completely full. >> fuller planes equals bigger profits and if they do it

passengers have fewer choices. the investigation comes as the airlines have begun to turn record profits after struggling for years. today fewer available seats, higher ticket prices up 13% over five years and extra charges for checked bags ticket changes, even extra leg room. >> i think the extras they add on make it difficult to travel. >> if you don't call six months in advance, you don't get a seat. >> since 2007 through a series of mergers, nine airlines have shrunk to four controlling 80% of the u.s. market. the question is whether the airlines have worked together to maintain discipline as a group. >> that was nbc's tom costello reporting. another day, another major company cuts ties with donald trump. this time it's macy's. they're taking his men'swear line off the shelves. macy's is the third company to drop the presidential candidate following his controversial comments about mexican immigrants. macy's says it stands for diversity and inclusion and it won't tolerate discrimination.

trump responded saying both macy's and nbc totally caved at the first sign of potential difficulty with special interests groups who are nothing more than professional agitators. now he could be taking another hit. perhaps from the city of new york. mayor bill de blasio says the city is reviewing contracts with the business mogul. the firestorm may not have hurt the donald's chances at the presidency. a new poll finds trump in second place among republicans in iowa trailing only jeb bush. the world cup semifinals between japan and england was one you had to see to believe. the score was tied as japan was driving down the field in extra time and this happened. >> played the forward, and okini was there, this time they go in the goal. goal line technology. >> england defender inadvertently kicked the ball towards her own net, knocking in

storm destroyed the wood at the marina. and roofs were badly damaged as well in the storm. with that nbc meteorologist bill karins sheer with our thursday forecast. >> it hasn't been pretty in missouri. one point last night, the entire southern half of the state was under a flash flood warning. i've been telling you this day after day and showing you the high temperatures the forecast highs, running out of ways to describe how unusual and how long this duration of the heat wave is in the west. let's look at today's forecast highs compared to normal. it's hard to remember what normal is any more in the northwest. temperatures in the red arrows is how much above normal today's highs will be. these will be near records in many areas, 20 to 22 degrees above normal day after day. very unusual. yes, knife to ten, maybe 15 but to be 15 to 20 degrees above normal this long for this extended period of time is very rare. the northwest is really where the poster child is for how exceptional the heat wave has been. it's still very hot across nevada and california not as
