>> and i'm laura garcia-cannon and i am back. >> she's back. >> back in the south bay after a little bit of traveling. let's check that forecast with meteorologist kari hall. i understand it's been pretty warm here. >> it has been and now we're breaking the heat with, get this, some rain. it's streaming across parts of the north bay and also the east bay. it is moving in this morning, but has also been enough to bring this some isolated strikes of lightning so you may be seeing that as you head out the door this morning. it will continue off and on as we go through at least this morning and then we may see another round later on this afternoon. so be aware that you may need to grab the umbrella before you head out the door. current temperatures are still very warm, look at livermore, it's 76 degrees this morning and in san francisco it is 58 degrees. so our temperatures won't be as hot today. i will show you that coming up in the full microclimate forecast. good morning, anthony. >> it was one of those lucky

ones to capture some of that lightning in the sky coming in. we definitely have to see that monsoonal area across the bay. we have some slick roads as you can see denoted by some of the green on our traffic maps and that's going to continue to be the case across the tri-valley and east bay. that's where the computer model is picking up on some slick roads. no early accidents here this morning. light open roads. >> we are following several breaking news stories this morning, first at least 36 people are dead after a ferry capsized off the coast of the philippines. >> crews rescued more than 100 people from the waters, another 19 still missing this this morning. survivors say the bow of the officery rose from the waters before it flipped over on one side and began to sink. there were heavy waves at the time that that boat went down. also breaking, more than 5,000 people told to get out of their homes after a train carrying dangerous chemicals derailed in in tennessee. the train jumped the tracks just

after midnight south of knoxville, the chemical caught fire sending toxic gas into the air. seven officers were rushed to the hospital after breathesing in fumes from that fire. authorities have set up a two mile evacuation radius around the fire which could be in place for up to 48 hours. now to new details this morning in a motorcycle crash involving pedestrians in san francisco. it happened late last night in a busy part of the city. this morning we're learning a little more about the victims' conditions can. "today in the bay" bob redell live with the latest. >> reporter: two people badly hurt in this accident involving a motorcyclist at the intersection of market and 3rd in san francisco. according to police the motorcyclist lost control of his bike and slid into two people, one in a sidewalk, one in a crosswalk. one of the pedestrians was transported unresponsive with

life-threatening injuries and rushed into surgery. the other was cut on the face, might have suffered a traumatic brain injury, but is expected to live. >> as with any collision at this point we will be looking at different collision factors such as speed, possible drunk driving, but there's many factors that could have caused the collision. a pedestrian might have go got into the roadway. we're going to look at all those different pockets. >> reporter: police tell us that they will also be looking to see if any of the surveillance cameras in this intersection, i know of at least one, might have caught last night's accident. reporting live here in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> let's hope some recovery goes on there. it was wills a busy night for san francisco police who were also investigating a deadly shooting on the embarcadero. a viewer who lives across the street sends us this video. you can see people crouching over the woman to help her after she was shot last night. it happened right out on pier 14

near the ferry building, it's an area where many tourists walk by every day. police say the 31-year-old woman was visiting from pleasanton when someone shot her in the body, the torso. the woman who has not been identified tied at the hospital. within an hour officers detained a person of interest. >> we're hoping on the fact that we have a lot of good video surveillance that pointed out on embarcadero that that will be able to assist us in the investigation. >> normally couples walking by, taking pictures of the sunset. this is the first time i have ever seen anything like this. >> san francisco police are asking any witnesses to come forward. happening today, a contractor is taking the da's office to court over the deadly balcony collapse in berkeley. segue construction is asking for a restraining order. that company wants to prevent investigators from testing any evidence without one of its representatives present. last month the balcony at the

library gardens apartments in berkeley collapsed killing six people and injuring seven others. city inspectors found the beams had severe dry rot. it's 4:35. new details now, the u.s. department of justice has cleared the sonoma county sheriff's deputy who shot and killed 13-year-old andy lopez back in 2013. prosecutors announced they will not file criminal charges against the deputy. they say he acted within the law when he shot lopez who was carrying a replica assault rifle. sonoma county prosecutors came to the a cushion last year sparking ago wave of protests in the santa rose is a zoo a mural depicting lgbt latinos brought out hundreds in san francisco to rally against hate. the mural was torched on monday night. marks the fourth attack since it went up just less than a month ago. david campos joined community leaders and a crowd condemning that attack. >> it is a hate crime.

it's being investigated as such. >> they just hate. they hate, they're angry and if they hate and they're angry then they should move out. >> we're looked at as this great city of love and acceptance, but there's still parts of it and there's a lot of change that needs to be done. >> the san francisco police say they have video of all of the attacks, but they are not releasing them yet. investigators relate that the arson was committed by a man dressed in black and wearing white gloves and a mask. crews working this morning to fix a sewage pipe that burst in alameda. i'm sorry to say it's going to affect the morning commute. it broeks on otis drive. two of the four lanes on owe if i say drive are open this morning. crews hope to have everything back to normal by at least 11:00 this morning. did you happen to catch the light show last night is this lightning lit up the bay area. this is video from two separate locations, one in san jose, the other in livermore.

it's a live look now at how the skies are shaping up this morning after that light show. rain clouds still lingering in several parts of the bay area right now, almost unimaginable as we endured two days of heavy heat. quite a contrast from what we have seen the last couple of days. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. >> we expected most of this rain to just kind of fizzle out before it moved here but it hasn't, it's brought in some at least measurable rain for parts of the east bay and north bay, while we see the lightning in the distance. so this morning it's still coming down, it's picking up a lot of that monsoonal moisture coming in from the southwest and even a little bit of lightning, too. we will see this off and on. you can feel the difference in the air this morning as you walk out the door and expect more of this off and on throughout the day and maybe even tomorrow, too. so hopefully we can squeeze out quite a bit more of that moisture and bring us some measurable rain before the weekend. it is still very mild and our

temperatures in the upper 60s starting out the day, we are at 76 degrees now in the tri-valley and as well as the rest of the bay area. we will see a high of 94 degrees still, so very warm, very humid, it will feel uncomfortable, and 84 degree today's high in the peninsula. north bay topping out at 86 degrees. i'll show you the weekend forecast are for the 4th coming up in a shoe minutes. >> actually, things are looking really good this morning, still early no big surprise there. i want to take you into the traffic maps across the east bay, some of the showers that kari was mentioning the ground is a little slick out there and it's light rain so that's the stuff you have to be careful with because it mixes in with that oil and the pavement -- well, we haven't seen rain. we actually have an oakland game this evening. keep that in mind if you're going to be using 880, around 7:00 some extra traffic for you this evening for you.

to you. the department of justice says airlines may be illegally working together to keep prices high. the agency confirms it's investigating several airlines for collusion or illegally communicating with each other. a group called flyers rights believes airlines mergers are trying to eliminate competition. >> first of all, what took them so long? ? secondly, why did they allow the mergers? thirdly, why don't they quickly run through the process, determine the cause and eliminate it, because airline passengers are suffering financially every day. >> united airlines, delta and american airlines are being investigated. in a statement the airline industry trade group says, we are confident that the justice department will find what we know to be true, our members compete vigorously every day and the traveling public has been the beneficiary. that ac has probably been getting plenty of work the last couple of days. how much money have you spent on

shows the nfl, m lflt b, nba and nhl credit cards have ratcheted up their benefits. sports league cards now offer things like low interest rates, sign up bonuses and some of those practical rewards. at 4:48 new data predicting antibiotic resistant super bugs may one day kill more people than cancer. that report published in business insider says that by 2050 super bugs could kill an estimated 10 million people a year. what the heck is a superbug you're probably wondering. critics say antibiotics are being overprescribed and inappropriately used which contributes to the spled of super bugs. the obama administration recently launched a five-year effort to try to fight the so-called super bugs. could a trip through the drive-thru actually be healthier than going through a full service restaurant? health experts say, yes, kind of. a new study found people who eat at restaurants usually get

door. so not really typical of this time of year to get some rain, even with the monsoon we don't see much of that moving into the bay area, but it's happening now and i think a lot of us will welcome it. 62 degrees in oakland now as you walk out the door and temperatures have really not dropped that much since yesterday when we first saw the showers and the clouds moving in. in the future cast we still see a chance of rain as we go through this evening. so even if we take a break i think with the daytime heating we could see more of those showers, possibly some thunderstorms firing up again. we will do it all over again tomorrow. so definitely a big change in this pattern as we go into the next couple of days we may have some of that rain off and on. i'm going to show you this because if it actually does happen it will probably be pretty awesome before the holiday weekend. this is the estimated rainfall we could have between now and early saturday as the moisture continues to stream in from the southwest, but there may also be

some lightning so we will have to watch out about that fire concern and then a cooler on shore pattern in time for the weekend. today expect highs reaching 90 degrees in los gatos which knocks it back 10 degrees from yesterday and 70s and 80s elsewhere across the bay. >> we've seen some unseasonably warm temperatures there, kari, and the water, too, it could be affecting sea life. how about the sharks? yet another attack off the north carolina coast and now experts are saying it really might be something in the water. and this had morning coming over the golden gate bridge not as much fog as we saw yesterday, but definitely some slick roads even in the north bay. we'll get you up-to-date with your morning commute when "today in the bay" comes right back.

as we continue to get updates and the skies continue to clear we will continue to update these maps as well. let's switch outside and show you what is happening in san jose, traffic streaming in smoothly. back to you. this morning we are learning of another shark attack in the waters off of north carolina. this marks the seventh attack in three weeks. police say a 67-year-old man was waist water deep -- excuse me, waist deep in the outer banks when a shark pulled him underneath the water biting his leg, hip and hands. the pan managed to swim to shore and was airlifted to a local hospital. >> the news spread quickly on the beach that it ises a shark attack or a shark bite and so, you know, obviously everybody got out of the water. >> experts say the increased number of shark attacks might be due to the unseasonably hot june. warmer water is bringing in more fish and the sharks are not far behind. >> it is 4:56. it's a place so many of us go
