joining us. i'm sam brock =laura/2shot= and i'm laura garcia cannon. inching toward that holiday, i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we are following breaking news this morning, a couple of stories to tell you about. first at least 36 people are dead after a ferry capsized off the coast of the philippines. crews rescued more than 100 people from the waters. another 19 are missing this morning. survivors say the bow of the ferry suddenly rose from the waters before it filled over on one side and began to sink. there were heavy waves at the time the boat went down. a scary scene whack home now and also breaking news. more than 5,000 people told to get out of their homes in tennessee after a train carrying dangerous chemicals derailed. that train jumped the tracks just after midnight south of knoxville. the chemicals caught fire sending toxic gas spewing into the area. seven officers were rushed to the hospital after taking in the fumes from the fire. authorities have set up a two

mile evacuation radius around that fire which could be in place for up to two days. back here locally, lightning lit up the bay area overnight. this is actually video from two separate locations, one in san jose, the other in livermore. here is a live look at how the skies are shaping up this morning. rain clouds still lingering in several parts of the bay area right now, quite a contrast i understand from what we've seen in the past few days. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall to see what is going on right now. quite warm. >> it is. it's kind of very humid and midwestern like as you walk out the door because our temperatures really didn't fall that much, especially for parts of the tri-valley, and we also have a lot of humidity streaming in from the monsoonal moisture coming from from the southwest. so great news. this helped to break the heat yesterday and you may have seen that lightning initially, but though we're getting some rain to follow that. it still is coming in so we may not be done with the rain just

yet. even if we take a break for a while we may have another round rolling up today with the daytime heating. so as you head out be sure to grab the umbrella, you may need it today, low clouds and some rain in some spots, but it will be more humid and less heat this afternoon which of course is great news had. then it gets much cooler and comfortable just in time for the holiday weekend. we'll talk more about all of that coming up in the microclimate forecast which comes up in less than ten minutes. sam and laura. thank you very much. new details now on a story that we're following out of san francisco where a motorcycle slammed into pedestrians leaving one person with life-threatening injuries. >> "today in the bay" bob redell live in san francisco with reynolds wolf it all happened. >> reporter: police here in san francisco are trying to figure out who is at fault in this bad accident that took place at the intersection of market and third behind me here in the downtown area. was the driver speeding or drinking? the driver of the -- the

motorcyclist or was it one of the pedestrians who accidentally stepped out in front of his path or perhaps a combination of both. those are some of the questions that investigators are trying to answer. it was a little bit after 9:00 last night the motorcyclist lost control of his bike, slid into two people, one who was on the sidewalk, another in the crosswalk, all three people taken to sf general. the condition of the motorcyclist unknown. one of the pedestrians, however, was transported unresponsive with life-threatening injuries, rushed into surgery. the other pedestrian is being treated for a head injury. >> we're looking at a possible traumatic brain injury as well as laceration toss that person's face. at this point it looks like that second person is expected to survive, but as with any possible head injury we need to keep an eye on that victim and make sure we take proper precautions because you never know how head injuries can turn. >> reporter: san francisco police tell us they will also be taking a look at the surveillance camera footage. there's at least one camera that might have been pointed in the direction of last night's

accidents here on market and third. reporting live here in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." it is 5:03. a daytime shooting in san francisco not bar from service's ferry building, an east bay woman killed and a person of interest is now in custody. it happened along pier 14 along the embarcadero. that spot where tourists and locals alike often stop to watch the sunset. "today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us with what police know about the shooting and why the public is not considered in any danger. good morning, kris. >> good morning to you, laura, and welcome back. we are right here right in between the ferry building and the bay bridge, a spot where a lot of folks stop to take video and pictures. so that's what police are hoping for, that if anybody got pictures or video of what happened around 6:30 last night when this woman was shot and killed that they are willing to let police take a look at that video. we have video from someone who lives not far from here, a

viewer of ours who let us see as this all happened. the woman fell to the ground and people rushed over to try to help her immediately. san francisco police were on the scene even before the ambulance which then took at that woman to san francisco general hospital where she died about two hours later. now, between the time that that woman was shot and when she died san francisco police found and dee and i a man not far from here also along the embarcadero but closer to at&t park, they will calling him a person of interest. >> we're hoping on the fact that we have a lot of good video surveillance that pointed out on embarcadero that it will be able to assist us in the investigation. >> normally couples walking by, taking pictures of the sunset. this is the first time i have ever seen anything like this. >> reporter: now, the coroner is not releasing the woman's identity just yet, but again they say she is a 31-year-old woman from pleasanton. also police aren't saying how she and the person of interest might be connected, but

investigators add they are not looking for any other person of interest. san francisco police again are asking for anyone who might have video or pictures from around this area, pier 14, right between the ferry building and the bay bridge to give them a call, let them look at that video. we don't have the trained eye that investigators have and they might be able to see something that we don't. in san francisco, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." happening today, the contractor now taking the da's office to court over that deadly balcony collapse in berkeley. segue construction is asking for a restraining order. the company wants to prevent investigators from testing evidence without one of its own representatives present. last month a balcony at the library gardens apartments in berkeley collapsed killing six people, injuring seven others. city inspectors ultimately found that the beams were suffering from severe dry rot. new details this morning, the u.s. justice department has cleared the sewn had a county sheriff's deputy who shot and killed 13-year-old andy lopez in

2013. prosecutors announced they will not file criminal charges against deputy eric dellhouse. they say he acted within the law when he shot lopez who was carrying a replica assault rifle. sonoma county prosecutors came to the same conclusion last year sparking a wave of protests in santa rosa. the latest police officers have been cleared of all charges in the arrest last month of a man police say was high on meth and through his mother into upcoming traffic. he suffered is bruises and a broken leg during that arrest which a bystander caught on video. monterey county's district attorney says the officers did nothing cribbing m. we are learning more about a car crash at pin net at that airport. it happened you yesterday outside terminal b on the far side of the divider near the parking garage. one person was killed and five

others hurt, including a baby. police say a 25-year-old woman died when she slammed her red pontiac into a silver suv. the five people inside the suv were rushed to the hospital, all are expected to recover. police say the suv was stopped, about to make a turn when it was hit. >> it is apparent to the investigators at this time that the car was going at a pretty fast rate of speed. >> i can't imagine how this happened. i mean, i can't imagine how someone could have had that much speed up. >> police are reviewing security cameras to find out exactly what happened. crews this morning working to fix a sewage pipe that furs in alameda and it is going to effect the morning commute. the line broke yesterday on otis drive between mound and high streets. two of the four rains on otis street are open this morning. crews are hoping to have things normal by 11:00 in the morning and flowing again. >> sewage pipes, heat, no at good mix. >> that is a bad combination. a little cooler today.

let's check the forecast now with meteorologist kari hall. >> good morning. we start out with the low clouds and some very mild temperatures. we've seen a little bit of some rain moving into parts of the east bay and the north bay and you may even be able to see a little bit of lightning in the distance. some some more of this rain rolling in from the east. as we go into the rest of the day we will have that possibility of some of those showers popping up. just grab the umbrella just in case. this is really helping out to keep us from seeing those temperatures in the 90s and triple digits like they had yesterday. even though our temperatures start out very mild, it's 76 degrees now in the tri-valley and san francisco is at 58 degrees. this is where we're headed this afternoon. still warm in some so it's, 94 degrees could be the high today in the tri-valley and san francisco reaching 72 degrees. that's a quick look at the forecast, we will take a look at the 4th of july forecast coming up in just a few minutes.

this morning the bay bridge approach we are finding things are still very light here coming in. still very early. you can see traffic moving. no lights on just yet. let's switch over to the maps. you can see lots of green coming am from the south from 8el 0, also coming in from berkeley. emeryville no problems there. you will notice some of the green on our maps, that's the shower activity that kari was pointing out that's showing up on our traffic sensors. some of the roads may be slick across the tri-valley coming in from the castro valley into fremont. it doesn't look like we have any major accidents or minor accident. as we get down into the south bay things looking good near. we don't have slick roads here but the traffic flow is moving without a problem coming in from 101, same deal for 78 and into could you pleaser ton. into palo alto, you can see wide open roads, no major concerns here and just a little traffic it this morning. guys, back over to you. 5:10. if you feel like you're getting

an active shooter in the area. once again, the washington, d.c. navy yard this morning, it is on lock down. this is the same navy yard where a navy veteran opened fire killing 12 people before he was killed in a gun fight with authorities. you may remember that scene. but you see officers running around right now, active scene. we'll of course keep an eye on the situation, update you on any developments as they continue to come into our newsroom this morning. staying in d.c., the department of justice says airlines might be illegally working together to keep prices high. the agency confirming that it is investigating several airlines for collusion or illegally communicating with one another. a group called flyers rights believe that airline mergers are trying to eliminate competition. >> first of all, what took them so long? secondly, why did they allow the mergers? thirdly, why don't they quickly run through the process, determine the cause and eliminate it, because airline

passengers are suffering financially every day. >> united airlines, delta and american airlines all being investigated. in had a statement the airline industry trade group says, quote, we are confidence that the justice department will behind what we know to be true, our members compete vigorously every day, and the traveling public has been the beneficiary. sorry, but get ready for higher electricity bills, california's puc plans to vote on a new rate hike. it is expected to boost rates for most pg&e customers by $10 a month. some consumer groups are blasting the plan, accusing the puc of working in at that hoots in the utility companies to sneak the rate hikes through the holiday weekend, especially when it's hot. now, could a trip to the drive through actually be health yer than going to a full service restaurant? health experts have looked at this and they say, yes, kind of. a new study found that people who eat at restaurants usually get health year mels meals, but they also take in more

mark zuckerberg, either. >> do you know what gave it away, that sus is spens music. >> seems like it is the same sort of nine inch nails music that was in the other movie. maybe it is. >> who did the scoring on this movie? >> trent rez ner, right? i think maybe he did the scoring in this one, too. >> i want to see the movie now. thank you, scott. we are actually learning of another shark attack in the waters off of north carolina. this is the seventh attack in just three weeks. police say a 67-year-old man was in waist deep water in the outer banks when a shark pulled him under water, biting him leg, hip and hands. the man manned to swim to shore and was airlifted to a hospital. >> the news spread quickly on the beach that it was a shark attack or a shark bite and so, you know, obviously everybody got out of the water. >> experts say the increased number of shark attacks might be due to the unseasonably hot

june. warmer water is bringing in more fish and the sharks are not far behind. >> you know this kind of thing is really rare and still if you are a parent and you see that and you're headed out to the beach or july 4th -- >> even if you are not a parent. i don't think i would go into the water. >> we actually are going to see some temperatures coming town. >> i think so especially as we go into the 4th of july weekend, everyone is off trying to find some way to relax and enjoy the summer. we had such hot weather the past couple of days, now it's coming back down and in the form of some high humidity and even some rain across the bay area. as you take a look at the seven day forecast now coming up at the bottom of the screen, come on over, check it out. as you head out today we're getting a live look at san jose, we see some clouds, even some rain this approximate parts of the bay this morning. you walk out the door and it just feels so much more humid today with that more humidity we have less heat. so that's definitely working in our favor, but temperatures cool

down just in time for the 4th of july weekend. this is what i'm talking about, yesterday we had temperatures jumping up into the 90s and triple digits and then we have these clouds rolling in, even a little bit of lightning, but each as the rain continues to fizzle out we are seeing more of a streaming in across the central valley from the upon soon and a lot of times we see it just dry out before it gets here, but right now that's not the case. we may have the possibility of some more rain moving in. this is a look at the future cast and this is what the radar and the satellite could look like as we go through the day. you want to keep the umbrella handy as we see more of that rain possibly moving into the bay area, maybe even a little thunder in spots. we will do it all over again tomorrow. we still have that chance of rain in the forecast throughout the day as a month soonl moisture once again moves in and also for the sierra there may be some lightning in the mountain tops and cooling on shore pattern in time for the weekend.

once again temperatures will be cooling off. a quick look at all of the microclimates. temperatures today not as hot as yesterday. let's check traffic now with anthony. let's talk about this traffic. you can see not too hot on the roads, either, things looking pretty good. the north bay 880 or northbound 880 pretty good, southbound traffic starting to flow in heading down towards fremont. just a little farther south on 880 no problems. you can see the same traffic still moving northbound lanes looking pretty good as well. let's switch over and show you i want to take a look at the east bay. we don't have think major concerns really across most of the east bay headed in over towards antioch, concord, things looking good there. 680 wide open. we are starting to see traffic building across the altamonte pass, no big surprise, but you can see some of those yellows and reds starting to pop up. even down 84 down through the sunol grade. things are starting to pick up

inappropriately used which contributes to the spread of super bugs. the obama administration recently launched a five-year effort to fight sewer bugs. too many kids with adhd may be getting strong anti-psychotic drugs from their doctors. that according to a new study published by the journal of the american medical association. the study found 40% of kids prescribed anti-psychotics were diagnosed with adhd. they are meant to fight diseases like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. even if you are not a sports fan industry experts say a sports league or team credit card might be a home run for you. a new analysis by creditcards.com shows the nfl, mlb, nba and nhl credit cards have ratcheted up their benefits to compete with more mainstream credit cards. sports league cards now offer things like low interest rates, sign up bonuses and some what they consider practical rewards.

positive as you thought? >> i was calling for 240, we got 223,000 jobs added in the month of june. the unemployment rate drops to 5.3%. that's a spectacular number. i don't know how long it's been since we've been at 5.3%. i will check the starts when i get back to my desk but that's a really good number. 223 is less than we were expecting, but it's still a really good number, well over 200,000, not quite the 280 we saw last month. now, why are we kpegt getting this on a thursday? the reason is that friday is a bank holiday, government holiday, so the labor department giving us the jobs report a day early. laura. thank you very much. 5:32. now to new details on a motorcycle crash involves pedestrians in san francisco. this happened late last night in a busy part of the city. this morning we're learning more about the victim's condition. >> "today in the bay" brs joining us live from market street where this happened with

"today in the bay" kris sanchez has more on the person of interest that police now have in custody. kris. >> reporter: we know that there is a person in custody and you can also see from the shot behind me that this is an open beautiful spot, perfect for taking pictures or videos and police are hoping that anyone who might have done that last night will help had them out, let them see that video to see if there are any clues that are in that video. now, this is viewer video and you can see this chaos that followed the gunfire as a woman lay on the ground, her family and strangers surrounded her trying to help. >> it looks like we lost kris

there. very tragic situation. you see some of the video actually of the woman who was shot as people were responding yesterday. not a lot of information known about what happened before the shooting. again, tas on pier 14 in the embarcadero. kris is working on getting more details with us. now to some more breaking news. crews in alameda county are fighting a brush fire at this hour, it broke out just after 4:30 in sunol. the area is near cal var ras and gary roads near property owned by san francisco of water company. so far it's burned through 20 acres. we're told in this in a remote area and no structures are threatened. we will continue to follow that story as well. >> it's so try out there. a mural depicting lgbt latinos brought out hundreds in san francisco to rally against hate. the mural was a actually torched on monday night. the fourth attack since it went up less than a month ago. district supervisor david campos

joined opportunity leaders and a crowd of 400 people last night to condemn that attack. >> it is a hate crime. it's been investigated as such. >> they just hate. they hate, they're angry and if they hate and they're angry then they should move out. >> we're looked at as this great city of like love and acceptance, but there's still parts of it and there's a lot of change that needs to be done. >> san francisco police say they have video of all the attacks, but they are not releasing them just yet. investigators say the arson was committed by a man dressed in black, wearing white gloves and a mask. a wildfire burning in riverside county is forcing authorities to evacuate a campground just days ahead of the july 4th holiday. this fire started last night in more know valley 70 miles east of l.a. that fire has already burned about 40 acres and is headed towards lake paris state park. a campground has been evacuated. no word yet on what caused that

continue to heat up. right now it is very humid as you walk out the door and temperatures really didn't fall that much overnight, we are at 67 degrees in the south bay, tri-valley at 76 degrees and san francisco has come back down to 58 degrees with low clouds and fog. today highs reach 94 degrees, so it will still be hot, but a lot who are uncomfortable, too, with the humidity going up and reaching 84 degrees today in the peninsula. we'll talk about the 4th of july weekend coming up this a few minutes. right now let's check roads with anthony. we are stafrgt starting to find traffic building at the bay bridge approach. traffic is there and really stop and go, but it's not all bad. in fact, things aren't really stop and go until you get until this location, the maze still traffic moving smoothly there. let's switch over to the maps and show you what it looks like there. lots of green on the maps, some of the slick roads are tried up we don't have the green poly gallons we were seeing earlier.

fired at the navy yard in washington, d-c. an update now to breaking news from washington, d.c. reports of shots fired at the navy yard there in southeast d.c., that yard is still on lockdown. >> let's check in with "today in the bay" tracie potts. she is live in washington, d.c. with the very latest. >> good morning. we're getting updates by the moment. here is the latest information that we know. security at the white house has been stepped up as a response to this, but also we're learning at this moment that d.c. police are being told that no more response is needed. now, it's not clear why that is.

one source told us that there was an all clear, but we don't know if that's for the entire complex, just for one building. initially there were reports of shots fired, possible shots fired. we heard that a security guard saw two people who looked suspicious and that's what tipped off this massive police and fbi response, ambulances responded, roads were closed, people who work at the navy yard were told to shelter in place, which basically means barricade yourself in where you are and don't move in case there is an active shooter. there was no confirmation that there was an active shooter. we also know a text went out to people who had not come to work yet telling them not to because of this active shooting scene. again, we are getting sources telling us that there is an all clear, but we don't know if that applies to the entire complex. the navy is telling it us at this moment that that lockdown and shelter in place is still
