underway right now for survivors. and thick black smoke forces thousands to evacuate after a train derails in tennessee. more clouds, more humidity and a little bit of rain ming into the bay area. more on that coming up in the microclimate forecast. traffic moving fairly smoothly here on this thursday, but we do have a fire that we're talking about that could affect your morning commute. we will get you out the door on time coming up in just a moment. >> announcer: from nbc bay area, also "today in the bay." >> a good thursday morning. thank you for joining us i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we do begin with an update to breaking news this morning. the washington, d.c. navy yard on lockdown right now after reports of a possible shooting. here is a live look what it looks like outside. plenty of police cars in the streets. now, the navy itself not releasing very much information, but here is what we do know. there is a shelter in place for the entire naval yard and the fbi sending a team based on

unconfirmed reports of an active shooter. d.c. fire just confirmed no reports of any injuries at this time. we're told security at the white house in fact and the capitol have been stepped up in response to this as a precaution. this is the same navy yard you might recall where a military contractor opened fire in 2013 killing 12 people before he was eventually killed in a gun fight with authorities. we're following this sorry very closely as it develops we will of course bring you the updates throughout the morning. we're also following breaking news at home. a brush fire burning in the sunol hills, that is a live picture from our helicopter. you can see how far that smoke has spread. the keen, though, smoke forming over the hilltops, it broke out just after 4:30 this morning. it's in the area that that's year cal var ras and geary road. near property soend by san francisco water company. so far that fire has burned through 20 acres. it's in a remote area and no

structures are threatened right now. a calmer scene on the roadways, a little light rain, too. while you were sound asleep some wild weather did roll through the bay area, not just that light rain but thunder and lightning creating dwight the show in the overnight sky. >> it will be interesting to see if possible lightning strikes started that fire that you mentioned in sunol as we take a live look outside, what a contrast this morning, but warm temperatures overnight. these thunderstorms making their way out of the area, but kari hall we are not out of the woods just yet he. >> no, we may see more as we go into the afternoon. we started out this morning with all of that monsoonal moisture moving across parts of the bay area and coming across the central valley. so a lot of heat to deal with, it gives it a little more energy, but the rain continues to fizzle out and we start out with dry conditions this morning. even a little bit of some clearing in spots, but as temperatures heat up later on

today we may have a few more of those storms popping. so just keep the umbrella and accessory you normally don't need this time of year, you may need that today. look at the tri-valley temperature, that's currently 73 degrees and as we go into the afternoon still very warm, a chance of a shower or storm, 94 degrees and higher humidity today, but not as hot as yesterday, but it may feel a little bit more uncomfortable as we go through the day. looking food in time for the holiday weekend. i will have a look that coming up in a few pins. if you are looking for a personalized microclimate forecast you can get it anytime just download our nbc bay area app and click on the weather tech. an update to other breaking news. frantic rescue efforts are underway in the philippines as crews race to find survivors from a capsized ferry. 36 people are confirmed dead, more than 100 others are safe, but about 20 people are missing at this hour. officials say the ferry was only

650 feet from a popular port when it went under. no word yet on a cause, but we're told the water was very choppy at the time. also breaking this morning in tennessee a train carrying dangerous chemicals derailed overnight forcing the evacuation of some 5,000 people. that train jumped the tracks just south of knoxville and the chemicals on board caught fire sending toxic gas into the air. officials say it could be as long as 48 hours before people are actually allowed to return to their homes. new details now, one person could die, two others in the hospital this morning after a motorcyclist slammed into people walking on one of san francisco's busiest streets. >> market and third. this happened late last fight at that location. "today in the bay" bob redell has been following this story this morning. he is live. bob, we know at least one person is fighting for his or her life right now.

>> reporter: san francisco police are trying to figure out who was at fault in this very bad accident at market and third in san francisco. was it the motorcyclist? was he speeding or had he been drinking? or perhaps one of the pedestrians, maybe one of them had accidentally stepped into his path, or a combination of both. those are some of the questions that investigators are trying to answer. it was a little bit after 9:00 last night that the motorcyclist lost control of his bike and slid into two people, one of the people was on the sidewalk, the other in the crosswalk. all three people taken to sf general. the condition of the motorcyclist unknown. one of the pedestrians was transported unresponsive with life-threatening injuries. rushed into surgery. the other is being treated for a head injury. >> we're looking at a possible traumatic brain injury as well as lacerations to that person's face. it looks like that second person is expected to survive, but as with any possible head injury we need to keep an eye on that victim and make sure we take proper precautions because you

never know how head injuries can turn. >> reporter: san francisco police tell us they will be checking any surveillance cameras that might have been pointed in the direction of this intersection to see if they captured last night's accident. again, sending one person to the hospital who, again, last report had life-threatening injuries. reporting live here in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." thank you very much. it is 6:06. the contractor is taking the da's office to court over the deadly balcony collapse in berkeley. segue construction is asking for a restraining order. the company wants to prevent investigators from testing evidence without one of their representatives present. last month a balcony at the library gardens apartments collapsed killing six people and injuring seven others. city inspectors found the beams had severe dry rot. investigators right now offering a $10,000 reward to help track down these three men, they are accused of punk ring the rubber dam at alameda creek

and fremont forcing the release of 50 million gallons of precious water. this happened back on may 21st. the amount of water lo was enough for 3500 families to use for an entire year. dra mon green isn't going anywhere. late yesterday he announced he resigned with the dubs. you might say green as a whole new meaning as in five years and reported $82 million. he now becomes the team's highest paid player. >> smoke screens when we talked about an impasse in his yeegss. an update to breaking news in sunol. look at that fire line still burning at this hour. it started at 4:30 this morning. this is near geary road and cal var ras in sunol, about 20 acres of land has already been burned there. it is in kind of a more remote part of alameda county. what authorities are telling us is no homes are threatened.

they're trying to get a handle on things. we know it is so dry out there in our hills, suffering a drought here in california, what about the threat of any wind in the area is this for that let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. >> the wind will be a little bit stronger today, but also with some lightning in the area that may spark off a few more problem spots as we go through the day, but as we get a live look from tiburon you see there is some clearing, but we also see those low clouds rolling across san francisco this morning. we also is have some rain. this is most likely what will cause a few more wildfires possibly. so hopefully we can get this to continue to dwindle down, but the moisture really hasn't been -- there hasn't been a lot of that this morning, but we are picking up on a few of those live lightning strikes for parts of the north bay right now. you can get a closer look at that. of course, with some of toes lightning strikes coming down to some very dry ground and right

now in santa rosa we see that thunderstorm continuing to move across, we will have a chance of seeing more of those as we go through the day. let's get a look at all of the microclimates. you to do see those rain icons there. we may have another round of showers and storms as we go through the day. a lot more humidity out there. it will feel very uncomfortable in many spots, especially spots like napa where it gets up to 86 degrees, 82 degrees in hayward and livermore today not as hot as yesterday but still pretty warm with a high of 92 degrees. a few more of those storms today and maybe tomorrow. i'll talk more about that and we will get a look at the weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. let's get a look at roads with anthony. the metering lights have been on for half an hour. traffic is starting to build at the bay bridge. we have clouds in the area. some slick roads especially coming over some of those area bridges this morning. keep that in mind. especially on those tight curves. take a look at the maps, you can see we are starting to find

traffic incidents in the bay area, uncord, 680 and burr nel avenue, 880 southbound near broadway and oakland there was a report of an mall in the roadway. altamonte pass things are starting to slow, we had an accident just before livermore. in san jose traffic not all that bad, in fact, lots of green on the map den notes traffic know is moving fairly smooth. there's a look at 101 past 680. no big problems other than that fire that continues to burn in sunol. chp continues to update their list and we will stay on that as the desk gets information. >> trying to get a line around there. it is 6:10. crews working to fix a sewage pipe that burst in alameda. as you can see from this new video this morning that area is closed off, it could impact your drive to work. now, here is the area i'm talking about, two of the four-lane of otis drive between mound and high street completely shut down.

our nbc chopov breaking news this thursday morning at 6:13. a brush fire burning in the sunol hills. our nbc chopper over the scene right now. these are live pictures where a cloud of smoke is forming over the hilltops. it broke out just about 4:30 this morning. the area is close to calaveras and geary roads near property that is owned by the san francisco water company. it's pretty remote out there, so far it's burned about 20 acres and no structures so far are threatened. at 6:14. they love to party apparently at st. mary's. some frustrated neighbors living in the quiet town of moraga say that rowdy college party years are keeping them up at night. people say they've been dealing with loud parties in one specific house for years. that is present rented by students. some say the parties are getting out of control. even though police do respond to calls neighbors want town leaders to beef up the rules. >> on the last one before the

police could get here they were all up on the roof making noise. by the time the police got here they had gotten off the roof. >> we do have unruly party ordinance that the council passed several years ago to address this issue. >> that ordinance has some loopholes and the council is working to try and close them. one proposal is to increase fines for landlords and tenants who violate the rules. the town will take another look at that issue next month. the american economy continues to grow. 223,000 jobs added last month. >> scott mcgrew, it's a pretty solid number and also comes a day early. >> tomorrow is a holiday, sal, for government workers and wall street so the usual first friday of the month jobs number became the first thursday of the month released. 223,000 jobs added, the unemployment rate falls significantly to 5.3%. workers' wages are largely unchanged. to greece where finance

minister yanis varoufakis says he will resign if greeks vote to agree to a bailout. we suspect the prime minister will, too. that up/down skroet on the bailout comes sunday. greeks will either agree to more austerity measures that's a yes or turn down a bailout and leave the your row. that's a no vote. we are almost at the end. how did we get here? greece wanted to be part of the new european grun so it essentially faked its finances. a new government got elected in greece, took a look at those books and said, oh, we are in trouble. europe which gets to tell greece what to do is part of the eu says you have to cut your benefits, raise your taxes, gets your books right and greece did for five years, but then they had enough and they voted this new government into office, this is where we get the characters like tsipras and yanis varoufakis, they're pushing back and saying no more cuts. we're getting close to the end of that record breaking solo

flight of the solar airplane. solar impulse 2 now hours away from aye. one pilot has beening fly three days and 20 hours were japan to hawaii, part of an around the world flight, the pacific ocean is the hardest. he is now a little more than halfway between the midway island and hawaii he will be there this afternoon hawaii time. fingers crossed. >> no kidding. boy, the calculations that must have gone into planning that trip. >> and the bravery because you are out there alone. >> that is a long expanse of blue. hopefully no sharks in the water. >> let's hope the water never become relevant. the sharks the latest developments in north carolina has seen an uptick in their shark attack in recent weeks. another man was attacked just yesterday. a 67-year-old man he was in waist deep water when a shark culled him under, biting his leg, hip and hands. this is the seventh attack in just three weeks. experts say that warmer water is

bringing in more fish and that in turn is bringing sharks closer to shore. >> a marine biologist kayaking in the monterey bay had a close call with a white shark. he says it happened tuesday near santa cruz. you can see the shark swim right underneath the kayak. that man is studying a group of sharks seen in the area recently. he snapped pictures of four juvenile while sharks. on the trip last week he spotted 15 swimming in shallow waters off of sea cliff state beach. kudos to californians when it comes to the drought. we're saving more water than what's required. >> back in may water use fell by 29% which is more than the mandatory mark of 25% set by governor brown. it's also the biggest savings since the state started tracking conservation last year. compare this to march when californians only cut back by 4%. >> it's been tough in the drought. also leading to very dry

conditions along our hillside. like the sunol grade this morning where there is a fire that is burning at least 20 acres so far. kind of hazy to see in this live look overhead, but that's because of all of the smoke in the area of calaveras road and geary road this morning. it's set to be a pretty remote area. no homes are threatened at this time. firefighters are trying to get a handle on this one. we don't know what caused it but there is some concern it could fb from some of the lightning strikes we saw overnight. let's check in in with meteorologist kari hall. >> we're still seeing some of the lightning moving across the tri-valley and north bay as well. the rain has pretty much fizzled out from those clouds. i do think we have a small chance of seeing some of those showers popping up later on today as well as tomorrow. let's get a look right now as we see some calm weather conditions looking at san francisco and levi stadium and we are also

seeing some clouds this morning and temperatures are coming back town as you walk out the door, you can feel it as you head out today. we are had also taking a live look at our camera from sunol and we see the smoke settling down in the hills will. this is what you need to know before you walk out the door, we have a mild start to the day and once again some low clouds. more humid, less heat. which may be some great news and then it gets cooler and dryer in time for the 4th. we are looking at a great weekend. this is what's happening the past few hours. we've seen that moisture streaming in from the monsoonal moisture and also a lightning strike being detected here for the north bay. let's get a closer look at that because it has continued to move across that area and we can tell here by that icon that there is some lightning in that storm that is just to the north and east of santa rosa, northwest rather of santa rosa. we will be watching out for that as we go through the day and now the temperature at 73 degrees in

the tri-valley, that's where we're starting this morning. and reaching into the mid 90s. the models are picking up on the possibility of more rain in the forecast. we may take a break and then here we go with more moisture moving in this afternoon. some spots may see that as we go through this evening as well as tomorrow as well as we see a lot of this monsoonal moisture sticking with us. we normally see it fizzling out. look like we will have a chance of that in the sierra and hilltops. keep that in mind as we go into the weekend. the weekend is looking nice and much cooler and by this evening into the next couple of days our highs reaching into the 80s, also seeing some 70s for the east bay and the tri-valley coming down from the triple digits to the 90s and even 80s in time for the 4th. i will have another look at the microclimate forecast coming up. right now let's check the roads with anthony. that fog is starting to being at the golden gate bridge. it was looking better an hour

ago but the visibility starting to decrease as you get over the bridge. you can't even make out the tower this morning. the bay bridge approach the metering lights have been on here for 45 minutes. you can see traffic building, low clouds as well. as we switch over to the maps i want to show you what's happening in the altamonte pass. we have a few things happening. the one i want to turn your attention to is on 580 westbound. there were two big rigs that had a crash in the fast lanes so that of course just not great news for the altamonte pass. you can see the red denoted on our traffic maps. once you get into livermore and past that towards 84 on to -- towards dublin things do start to improve. the in the south bay no big concerns here lots of green from 101, same deal for 280 and 85. wide open roads in the south bay. it is 6:22. why the horseback on the saddle, matt cane getting ready to take the mound for the first time hard to believe in nearly a year.

sending toxic gas into the air. all of this happening south of knoxville. we're going to continue to follow both of those stories and bring you new information as soon as we get it. more breaking news. authorities responding to reports of shots fired at a navy yard in washington, d.c. right now the base is on lockdown. "today in the bay" tracie potts live in washington, d.c. this morning with the latest. we've seen a lot of developments this morning, tracie. >> reporter: right. and it looks like there may be no shooter there. the latest information that we are he' getting, laura, from authorities, they've done a first entire sweep of the place and there was no active shooter, no one found with a gun, no bullet holes seen, no shots heard. the initial report was a possible shots fired, but they haven't found anyone who heard gunshots in that facility. now, the s.w.a.t. team doing ago second team just to be sure about but d.c. ems, the emergency personnel, dozens of ambulances told us that no one there has been treated.

that is certainly good news. initially the officials that we talked to there said that they thought it may be a post or a tweet, something online that gave them the concern that there may have been shots fired. there was a heavy response of police, the fbi, ambulances, they even stepped up security at the white house about a mile or so away. they are as far as we know still on lockdown, people were asked to shelter in place. we know now some of them have been evacuated. the good news at this moment it does not appear to be an active shooting situation or possibly shots fired at all, but it is still a developing story, they are still on the scene and still checking out the navy yard which of course raised lots of concerns because of the shooting of 12 people there two years ago in 2013. >> a memory that's etched in the minds of people living in d.c. thank you very much, tracie potts. other big stories we're following at home, san francisco police say they have detained a person of interest in a deadly shooting last night at a popular area it he waterfront, pier 14,

a bay area woman died after being shot there in the stomach. right now police say it appears to be a ran tomorrow shooting. three people are hospitalized, one in critical condition after a motorcycle slammed into a group of people last night on san francisco's market street at third. police have not determined what caused that biker to lose control. some action a in the skies over parts of the bay area overnight, light thing storms rolled through some locations, leaving traces of rain in the process as well. some hard to believe new findings in a deadly plane crash back in february. you height remember the video of the plane slipping an overs pass as it crashed after take off in taiwan. unbelievable. 43 people died in that accident. safety council now says the pilot mistakenly switched off the plane's only working engine just seconds before it crashed. one engine had had already malfunctioned. the crew apparently tried but failed to restart the engine that was mistakenly turned off. the plane's captain also

apparently failed a training test last year related to engine failures. new video to show you this morning of a tornado whipping through a city in most. you can see the funnel cloud briefly touchdown in the city of lee summit. a major storm pummeled that area bringing heavy rains and high winds. forecasters predict up to 3 inches of rain possible in that region. in washington state firefighters now have the upper hand on a testify stating wildfire, the sleep hey hollow fire now 83% contained. the fire burned about four square miles in the city of want achy and destroyed 23 homes. they believe the fire was caused by human but haven't determined whether it was set on purpose or by accident. we do have some new information regarding that sunol fire that is still going on right now, breaking news. there's our live camera shot. as you can see the smoke still perm yagt above the air there. what we have found out it's

still at about 20 ache err, but the belief from alameda county fire is it actually might have been two separate fires that merged and it they think that all the lightning we've seen over the course of the last day might be to blame for that fire. we're still following it to bring you more information. >> we have had quite a few lightning strikes overyiet. want to check in with meteorologist kari hall to see how our weather conditions are holding up. >> we still see some light ming coming down this morning so a major concern for us into this afternoon as well as tomorrow as this monsoonal moisture streams in and we've even seen some lightning for the north bay as well just to the north of santa rosa. we are seeing some of the showers moving through, a lot of that rain has been drying up. unfortunately we need that rain, but there may be a slight little bit of hope in the forecast as we go through the day. look at these temperatures now. this is right now in the tri-valley. it's 73 degrees and with the high humidity today our

temperatures come down, but that does not mean it will feel that much more comfortable. we will still have a chance of some of those showers and storms popping up today as we break the heat spell that we had the past couple of days. 86 degrees will be the high today in the south bay, with as well as 86 in the north bay. san francisco can expect a high of 72 degrees, a lot more clouds today and then this weekend our pattern changes once again. i will talk more about what to expect the 4th of july weekend. let's get a look at traffic with anthony. >> this morning traffic moving pretty good. we don't have any major accidents just coming through the altamonte pass but that's not that unusual, always kind of slow. just a few accidents every morning. as we look into oakland northbound lanes are starting to bog down a little bit. as we switch over to the maps and show you what's happening in the east bay, lots of green on the map as you heads down towards hayward approaching the san mateo bridge. the altamonte pass two big rigs had an accident in the fast lane

tunisia have new this morning... =laura/cu= authorities in tunisia have made more arrests in co new this morning at 6:40. authorities in tunisia made more arrests in connection with a terror attack at a popular beach resort. a tunisian official says 12 people have been detained, though their connection to the attack is not clear. 38 people died in the shooting rampage last friday, most of them british tourists. investigators say a tunisian student opened fire on the beach, he was gunned down by police. isis has claimed responsibility for the attack. new security measures are coming to the new york prison where two inmates busted out last month. the clinton correctional facility will now have more thorough searches of inmates' cells and staffing changes to ensure better bed checks. the prison will also have security gates installed in all tunnels. richard matt and david swet of

breaking news. the washington, d.c. naval yard on lockdown right now after reports of a possible shooting. here is what it looks like right though at that navy base. police cars in the streets. u.s. officials tell nbc news the first security sweep of the naval yard found no evidence of an active shooter. as a precaution security s.w.a.t. teams are going in for a second sweep of those buildings. one official tells us the initial reports of shots fired at the navy yard may have come from an internet posting or a tweet. "the today show" will have an update on this situation coming up in 15 minutes. more breaking news now. frantic rescue efforts underway as we speak in the philippines as crews race to find survivors from a capsized ferry. 36 people already confirmed dead, more than 100 others are safe. but about 20 people are missing at this hour. officials say the ferry was only 650 feet from a popular port when it went under. no word yet on a cause but we're

told the water was very choppy at the time. also breaking this morning in tennessee a train carrying dangerous chemicals derailed forcing the evacuation of 5,000 people. it jumped the track south of knoxville and the chemicals caught fire sending toxic gas into the air. authorities have set up a two mile evacuation radius around that fire. officials say it could be as long as 48 hours before people are allowed to go back home. an update to breaking news. the sunol fire that has been going on since 4:30 this morning, that is a live picture from our helicopter right now, hard to see much as the smoke is so thick, but what we do know is that it's still around 20 acres in a remote part of the sunol hills. earlier we saw some video of it, there we go, that shows the fire line kind of snaking through the hills there. it's relatively contained is what we're learning at this point, but what alameda fire officials are talking about is the possibility there were two separate fires that merged. they are still trying to figure

in, but it does get cooler for the fourth as we see a change in our pattern. this morning we see a little bit of light rain, but some lightning strikes coming down as well for the central valley moving into the east bay as well as the forth bay, but now we are still seeing those clouds and the possibility of some lightning as we go through the day. a slight chance of rain, just keep the umbrella handy, otherwise a mixture of sun and clouds. in morgan hill reaching 89 degrees, redwood city 78 degrees and ocean beach today 64 degrees. the north bay, napa, reaching 86 degrees today, hayward 82 degrees and pleasanton coming down from the triple digits and today reaching 90, but that does not mean it will feel so much more comfortable because our temperatures are in the 70s to start out the day. even some 60s as well as you head farther to the west and the east bay. as we go into the afternoon this is what the radar and the satellite could look like. here we are at 9:00 in the morning, take a break and seeing

evening. the oakland a's even this morning traffic building. so slow in the east bay this morning. 6:50. new details, a person could die, two others in the hospital this morning after a motorcyclist slammed into people walking on one of san francisco's busiest streets. >> this happened late last night near the corner of market and third streets. "today in the bay" bob redell has more on the crash. >> reporter: two people badly hurt in this this accident involving a kmlt, it happened a little around 9:00 last night at market and third in downtown san francisco. according to sfp is it d the motorcyclist lost control of his bike, slid into two people, one of the persons was on a sidewalk, the other in a crosswalk. all three taken to sf general. the condition of the motorcyclist unknown, but one of the pedestrians was transported unresponsive with life-threatening injuries and are you wished into surgery. the other was cut on the face,

killed andy lopez in 2013. prosecutors announced they will not file charges against erick gelhaus. they say he acted within the law when he shot lopez who was carrying a replica assault rifle. sonoma county prosecutors came to the same conclusion last year sparking a wave of protests in santa rosa. this morning san jose police are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol might have played a role in a deadly crash at sjc. this happens yesterday outside of terminal b at the airport on the far side of the divider. here is a graphical representation. it's near the parking garage. police say that a 25-year-old woman died when she slammed her are red pontiac into an suv. the five people inside the suv which included a baby all rushed to the hospital and they are all expected to survive. police say speed was likely a factor in the crash and now they are reviewing surveillance video to see exactly what happened. 6:54. investigators offering a $10,000 reward to help track down these

three men, they are accused of punk ring the rubber dam at alameda creek in in fremont forcing the release of 50 million gallons of water. it happened back on may 21st. the amount of water lost was enough for 500 families to use for an entire year. happening now, crews are working to fix a sewage pipe that burst in alameda. as you can see from the video this morning that area is closed off and it could impact your drive to work. here is the area we're talking about, two of the four lanes of otis drive between mound and high streets shut down. crews hope to have things back up and running to normal by 11:00 this morning. for the second straight year a popular east bay swimming spot has been closed due to toxic algae. they are closing lake to mess co in oakland. the reason toxic blue green algae, a similar bloom last summer closed that lake for two months. the rest of the park will stay open while the party gets
