weekend. in new york city more than 7,000 extra police officers will be keeping an eye on the crowds. this is only a precaution and there is no specific terror threat. good morning to you, brian. what kind of security operations are underway? >> reporter: here in the nation's capital there's the obvious security that you can see all around this town at the major monuments and throughout the crowd. there's also the kind you can't see. authorities say there is reason to be alert. in the nation's capital a rapid response to a report of shots fired at washington's navy yard where dozens were killed by a gunman two years ago. this turned out to be a false alarm, but it's a dramatic example of preparations around the country police hope they won't need on this holiday. >> enjoy this festive weekend,

off of lighthouse beach in new south wales. and here in the u.s. the summer of the character continues with beaches planning to open this holiday weekend despite a rash of attacks. >> reporter: the rescue was frantic. >> first responders respond to lifeguard beach. we have a subject that has an injury from possible shark. >> reporter: 67-year-old andrew costello now in good condition after a shark bit him on his leg hip and both hand. >> you could see about a baseball sized gash taken out of his knee. >> reporter: it was north carolina's 7th shark attack in three weeks. a record. >> i'm reviewing to make sure we have the personnel in place to respond to any potential emergency. >> reporter: this holiday weekend officials have decided not to close any beaches. >> we have no indication we need to do that.

let's talk about the weather because the heat continued unrelentlessly. the numbers in june were off the charts hot. it broke like the hottest june ever by a couple degrees. numerous spots off the charts. as far as any relief goes over the next few days very little if any. we're still looking at heat advisories portland southward right down. boise goes from 102 friday. sunday, 96. there's maybe a tiny bit of relief by sunday in spokane, about ten degrees cooler. may be bearable or even enjoyable to be outside. as far as today's forecast goes anyone doing any air travel not a lot of problems throughout. there will be severe storms in
