fourth of july hot dog eating exhibition and much more. we decided flo rida is the hardest working man in show business. has james brown's crown. >> absolutely. but glad he is here today. let's get to today's top story, everything you need to know to kick off the long holiday weekend expected to be the busiest since 2007. more than 41 million people traveling at least 50 miles. >> many of them heading to the beach, but in north carolina seven shark attacks have a lot of people dealing with mixed feelings about getting in the water. >> and on a weekend filled with large gatherings ongoing threats from isis and possible lone wolves have authorities stepping up security across the country. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is at the white house with that part of our story. peter, good morning. >> hey, tamron good morning to you. we want to be very clear about this authorities tell nbc news that there are not -- they are not aware of any specific or credible threats inside the u.s. at this time but as you noted with a focus on those so-called lone wolf attacks, those individuals ohio may simply be inspired by eyes circumstance the dangers now are more complex

and more unpredictable than ever. with america ready for the fourth of july today, officials are focused old keeping the celebrations safe. this year heightened concern, but no specific or credible threat. still, police respect taking any chances, cordoning off key sites, keeping an eye on the skies and on the ground. >> well, police are prepared but we can't just focus on major cities. terrorists may attack where they live. >> reporter: fueling fears, this fourth of july falls during the muslim holy month of ramadan. one isis leader calling for a month of calamity for the infidels. their grasp of social media is femme nominal, so quickly grasp how to use that. >> reporter: among the concerns that recent isis-inspired attacks, like this one in tunisia, could spawn copycats here in the u.s. and that fireworks sold at this time of year could be crafted into explosives. [ sirens ] the nation's nerves on display thursday after a woman reported hearing gunshots at the washington navy yard.

showers, but it was in tennessee yesterday we saw some of our heaviest storms. we ended up with a lot of tree damage because of damaging wind gusts and also a possible tornado. this is right near nashville. this tree falling right on a car, falling across the roads, downing power lines. some were without power because of these storms yesterday. this is a stalled from the that is sitting right through the tennessee river valley and there's a possibility we could see more strong storms again today, although with each day, we are losing the threat of severe weather and it looks more like we will just see some rain. a couple of areas of low pressure and within these heavier downpours, we could end up with some flash flooding there is a flash flood warping here in red where some of these storms are just training over the same area. and we could end up with a couple inches of rain. we do have a slight risk from oklahoma right back into the carolinas, where we could see, again, large hail damaging wind gusts and isolated tornado is possible be brief and it's not going to be a tornado outbreak by any means but there are about 25 million people in that at-risk area. as we go through the day today, we are still going to see these

showers and storms develop through tennessee. watch as this area of low pressure creeps a little bit further into the mid-atlantic. it is not looking like a washout, but just keep in mind saturday afternoon, we could see a couple of spotty showers from d.c. up through new york city. but the main rainy areas will be back through arkansas into mississippi through alabama and up into atlanta, too. so for your fourth of july forecast it's this area in green where we could see some of our spotty showers. out in the southwest, too, it is still going to be hot with a few isolated thunderstorms and the heat is just exceptional in the pacific northwest. all right, dylan, thank you very much. see what happens around the country there. but it is not the storms but sharks that are causing concerns along the north carolina coast. a string of seven attacks in just a few weeks has both beachgoers and officials on alert. nbc's gabe gutierrez is on the outer banks. gabe good morning. >> reporter: tamron good morning. local officials say they are vigilant here but right now there are no plans to close any of these beaches. they hope the tourists do not stay away during this crucial

holiday weekend. all this after those seven shark attacks in just thee weeks, a record here in north carolina. this morning, the latest victim is recovering a man in his late 60s. he is in good condition but doctors say he will need multiple surgeries to recover. now, expert says there is a wide variety of reasons why this may be happening, including warmer water this year may have brought the sharks and what they eat further north this year. now, state officials are scrambling to try to find a pattern to all this and they are urging anyone who fishes this weekend to do so away from swimmers and surfers to help keep these sharks at a distance. tamron? >> all right, gabe gutierrez, thank you very much gabe. all right. meantime the presidential campaign frenzy is descending on new hampshire over this long holiday weekend. hillary clinton and chris christie will be there today. jeb bush and marco rubio arrive tomorrow. nbc's kristen welker is in hanover keeping an eye on all of them. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: carson good morning to you. that's right. it's becoming an american tradition, presidential

candidates coming to new hampshire on the fourth of july holiday weekend to court some of this state's famously independent voters. hillary clinton kicks things off with an organizing event here at dartmouth college. polls show she has a pretty strong lead here but she is also getting a robust challenge from the left vermont senator, bernie sanders, closing the gap in polls and also drawing some pretty big crowds. she is also getting some more competition. just yesterday, former virginia senator jim webb joined the race. meanwhile, republicans will also be flocking to the granite state this holiday weekend. so far, 14 declared candidates of those who will be here this weekend, chris christie rick perry, jeb bush marco rubio, polls show bush has the lead right now but it's a small one and donald trump is coming in a close second here in new hampshire. trump has no plans to be here this weekend, but for the candidates who will be here this weekend, the stakes are high with tens of thousands expected to turn out and join the parade

party. >> actress opened letter thanking trump for mobilizing the latino vote with his words. and that is exactly why trump isn't just a sideshow for the republicans. he's alienating that latino vote they are striving to court. the party and other candidates guys are really feeling the pressure to distance themselves from him and from those words. >> heating up fast. all right, katy thank you very much. >> all right. sheinelle's in for natalie with the latest on a scary situation down south. >> yes, good morning. the fire from the train that derailed in tennessee late wednesday night is finally out this morning. officials in maryville, tennessee say they had a very productive night and have decided to begin lifting the evacuation order that sent 5,000 people from their homes. they'll lift the evacuation in what they call a phased and orderly way. crews have been assessing the rail car carrying a chemical that caused the fire. dozens of people have reported illnesses from the toxic fumes. at least 25 people were taken to the hospital. officials say lightning is to blame for the fire that

destroyed a predominantly black church in south carolina. investigators say they found no evidence of criminal intent at mt. zion church and declare the investigation complete. health officials are urges parents to vaccinate their kids after news of the first measles related death in the u.s. in 12 years. officials in washington state say a young woman with a weak immune system got the measles during an outbreak back in the spring. they say she was likely exposed to the virus at a local medical facility. she died of pneumonia. a common cause of death from measles. officials don't believe other people are at risk at this time. a russian rocket successfully launched an unmanned cargo ship to the international space station today. the iss crew was anxiously awaiting it after the failures of two previous supply missions. last sunday a u.s. supply mission failed when a spacex rocket broke apart shortly after liftoff. the russian ship is carrying supplies to the space station including water, food spare parts and experimental

authorities say he confessed to killing mike and tina careccia and then pointed investigators to their bodies, buried in six-foot-deep graves in valenzuela's backyard. >> we believe right now that this is a very strong case and we are trying to make it even stronger. >> reporter: according to the sheriff, valenzuela says he had been friends with the couple for two years and they used meth together. on june 21st, father's day, things took a fatal turn at valenzuela's house at his home in maricopa, arizona. >> jose is saying he brought the meth, they wanted more and that is when they came back over to the house and that's when this big fight ensued and then the murder took place. >> reporter: it is unclear what this fight could have been about, and the sheriff says toxicology tests will determine if the careccias actually did use drugs. >> i'm sceptical about that, especially tina. she was very, very dedicated to her children and she seemed focused on that. so, yes, i'm skeptical. >> reporter: he also said

nation primary is about seven months away. police in modera, california, are looking for a man who they say assaulted a clerk with a soda and then robbed the store where he worked. surveillance cameras show the man at a convenience store and then throwing his drink into the face of the clerk. the man then grabbed some cash but dropped most of it be jumping over the counter and, look at this, grabbing the rest. the store owner said he's just grateful that no one was hurt. a driver and a homeowner in south africa may have a tough time explaining this to the insurance company. the driver said he went over a ramp of some sort and went airborne, crashing through the roof of this house. no one was seriously injured in the crash and rude awakening, though, for one person who was asleep inside the house at the time. and a retired new york city firefighter is celebrating in a big way this morning. carmelo ricardo won $5 million on a scratch off lottery ticket and gets a lump sum of $3.3 million after taxes. he was among the firefighters who rushed to the world trade
