showers, but it was in tennessee yesterday we saw some of our heaviest storms. we ended up with a lot of tree damage because of damaging wind gusts and also a possible tornado. this is right near nashville. this tree falling right on a car, falling across the roads, downing power lines. some were without power because of these storms yesterday. this is a stalled from the that is sitting right through the tennessee river valley and there's a possibility we could see more strong storms again today, although with each day, we are losing the threat of severe weather and it looks more like we will just see some rain. a couple of areas of low pressure and within these heavier downpours, we could end up with some flash flooding there is a flash flood warping here in red where some of these storms are just training over the same area. and we could end up with a couple inches of rain. we do have a slight risk from oklahoma right back into the carolinas, where we could see, again, large hail damaging wind gusts and isolated tornado is possible be brief and it's not going to be a tornado outbreak by any means but there are about 25 million people in that at-risk area. as we go through the day today, we are still going to see these

showers and storms develop through tennessee. watch as this area of low pressure creeps a little bit further into the mid-atlantic. it is not looking like a washout, but just keep in mind saturday afternoon, we could see a couple of spotty showers from d.c. up through new york city. but the main rainy areas will be back through arkansas into mississippi through alabama and up into atlanta, too. so for your fourth of july forecast it's this area in green where we could see some of our spotty showers. out in the southwest, too, it is still going to be hot with a few isolated thunderstorms and the heat is just exceptional in the pacific northwest. all right, dylan, thank you very much. see what happens around the country there. but it is not the storms but sharks that are causing concerns along the north carolina coast. a string of seven attacks in just a few weeks has both beachgoers and officials on alert. nbc's gabe gutierrez is on the outer banks. gabe good morning. >> reporter: tamron good morning. local officials say they are vigilant here but right now there are no plans to close any of these beaches. they hope the tourists do not stay away during this crucial

holiday weekend. all this after those seven shark attacks in just thee weeks, a record here in north carolina. this morning, the latest victim is recovering a man in his late 60s. he is in good condition but doctors say he will need multiple surgeries to recover. now, expert says there is a wide variety of reasons why this may be happening, including warmer water this year may have brought the sharks and what they eat further north this year. now, state officials are scrambling to try to find a pattern to all this and they are urging anyone who fishes this weekend to do so away from swimmers and surfers to help keep these sharks at a distance. tamron? >> all right, gabe gutierrez, thank you very much gabe. all right. meantime the presidential campaign frenzy is descending on new hampshire over this long holiday weekend. hillary clinton and chris christie will be there today. jeb bush and marco rubio arrive tomorrow. nbc's kristen welker is in hanover keeping an eye on all of them. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: carson good morning to you. that's right. it's becoming an american tradition, presidential

candidates coming to new hampshire on the fourth of july holiday weekend to court some of this state's famously independent voters. hillary clinton kicks things off with an organizing event here at dartmouth college. polls show she has a pretty strong lead here but she is also getting a robust challenge from the left vermont senator, bernie sanders, closing the gap in polls and also drawing some pretty big crowds. she is also getting some more competition. just yesterday, former virginia senator jim webb joined the race. meanwhile, republicans will also be flocking to the granite state this holiday weekend. so far, 14 declared candidates of those who will be here this weekend, chris christie rick perry, jeb bush marco rubio, polls show bush has the lead right now but it's a small one and donald trump is coming in a close second here in new hampshire. trump has no plans to be here this weekend, but for the candidates who will be here this weekend, the stakes are high with tens of thousands expected to turn out and join the parade

destroyed a predominantly black church in south carolina. investigators say they found no evidence of criminal intent at mt. zion church and declare the investigation complete. health officials are urges parents to vaccinate their kids after news of the first measles related death in the u.s. in 12 years. officials in washington state say a young woman with a weak immune system got the measles during an outbreak back in the spring. they say she was likely exposed to the virus at a local medical facility. she died of pneumonia. a common cause of death from measles. officials don't believe other people are at risk at this time. a russian rocket successfully launched an unmanned cargo ship to the international space station today. the iss crew was anxiously awaiting it after the failures of two previous supply missions. last sunday a u.s. supply mission failed when a spacex rocket broke apart shortly after liftoff. the russian ship is carrying supplies to the space station including water, food spare parts and experimental

authorities say he confessed to killing mike and tina careccia and then pointed investigators to their bodies, buried in six-foot-deep graves in valenzuela's backyard. >> we believe right now that this is a very strong case and we are trying to make it even stronger. >> reporter: according to the sheriff, valenzuela says he had been friends with the couple for two years and they used meth together. on june 21st, father's day, things took a fatal turn at valenzuela's house at his home in maricopa, arizona. >> jose is saying he brought the meth, they wanted more and that is when they came back over to the house and that's when this big fight ensued and then the murder took place. >> reporter: it is unclear what this fight could have been about, and the sheriff says toxicology tests will determine if the careccias actually did use drugs. >> i'm sceptical about that, especially tina. she was very, very dedicated to her children and she seemed focused on that. so, yes, i'm skeptical. >> reporter: he also said

and many places extra police will be on hand for fireworks and other celebrations. officials in north carolina say there are no plans to close beaches in the state, despite seven shark attacks in the past three weeks. they're encouraging people who are planning to visit this fourth of july weekend to keep those plans. experts are still trying to figure out what is behind the spike in attacks. they think warmer water this summer is bringing fish and sharks closer to the shore. officials are encouraging fishermen to stay as far away as they can from swimmers. meanwhile the latest shark attack victim is speaking out. andrew costello feels fortunate to have survived the frightening and painful attack. this will be a working holiday weekend for the presidential candidates with many of them in new hampshire. today, hillary clinton was at an event in dartmouth college. among them chris christie, rick perry and marco rubio. new hampshire's first in the

nation primary is about seven months away. police in modera, california, are looking for a man who they say assaulted a clerk with a soda and then robbed the store where he worked. surveillance cameras show the man at a convenience store and then throwing his drink into the face of the clerk. the man then grabbed some cash but dropped most of it be jumping over the counter and, look at this, grabbing the rest. the store owner said he's just grateful that no one was hurt. a driver and a homeowner in south africa may have a tough time explaining this to the insurance company. the driver said he went over a ramp of some sort and went airborne, crashing through the roof of this house. no one was seriously injured in the crash and rude awakening, though, for one person who was asleep inside the house at the time. and a retired new york city firefighter is celebrating in a big way this morning. carmelo ricardo won $5 million on a scratch off lottery ticket and gets a lump sum of $3.3 million after taxes. he was among the firefighters who rushed to the world trade

devices may be leaving us vulnerable. all that information we used to store in our brains is now often also stored in our devices. it becomes sort of a crutch for our memories. according to an online survey, it found more than 90% of respondent say they use the internet as an extension of their brains. >> we have several areas of the brain that you work. memory, problem solving, attention, motor skills. well, if we give up all those skills and give it up to computers, what is your brain doing? i think it's a significant question to address. >> reporter: 67% of those surveyed could remember the phone number to the house they lived in when they were 15 but only 43% could recall their siblings' phone number off the top of their head. >> i only know my mom's phone number. >> reporter: the incident has also changed how we seek out information. according to the survey, half of us will immediately go online to

find an answer, while only 3.5% will look it up in a book. oh, those lonely encyclopedias. >> we certainly do love instant gratification, but i'm not sure that's a bad thing and the key is not to shun the technology, but learn to use it with a balance. >> reporter: our relationship with the internet in particular those easy to access mobile devices and the trust we put in them can resemble a human relationship to some experts. they'll know when it is suggesting we should all fall in love with our cell phones. >> or is he just programming you? >> if you rely on other things and don't challenge the brain, you actually lose the muscle. >> what is the take away here? like most things in life, especially on this day, like beer and hot dogs, it's all about moderation. it's okay to let your devices to

i'm ... ==topvo== a sad end to a summer trip for one south bay family. good bring morning. it's 8:26. i'm sam brock. a sad end to a summer trirpp. a 14-year-old died in a jet ski crash south of yosemite. he and an 18-year-old friend were aboard a seadoo and they struck a boat. he died from his injuries. his family has a home at the lake and they visit often. this is the second jet ski related death there this week. very sad developments there. if you're getting ready to start the july 4th weekend, what does it look like.

this morning, taking a deep dive and exploring the world of sharks. >> yeah. seaworld and busch gardens animal ambassador julie is here to share some fascinating information about these feared and often misunderstood predators. good morning. good to see you. >> good morning. >> this is some setup here. >> suspect this amazing? you know we know obviously that there's been some scary attacks happening in the wild recently but we wanted to come and kind of explore the world of sharks because there are over 400, or about 400 different species and only about a dozen or so are actually dangerous to humans at all. >> so who do we have with us today? >> the ones in this tank here are leopard sharks that were actually born at seaworld as well as some southern rays. these guys are only 15 months old right now, they were born right at our park and they are going to get to be about seven feet long when they are full grown. but again, a shark that is not considered dangerous at all to humans they are actually found right off the coast of the pacific, you know coast there and people swim with them all

the time and, you know there's not incidents at all. now, the other sea creatures in here how safe are they? >> also safe. you have heard of the stingray shuffle, you go in the water, make sure you shuffle your feet. the others are horse conches, beautiful animals found right off the coast of florida. yeah. so you guys are gonna get a chance to actually meet our sharks right now. >> let's meet some sharks. >> we have brown bandied sharks and epaulet sharks they are my favorite because they use the pectoral flippers to walk. so cute. >> the lighter color? >> the ones with the spots behind. >> actually picking up? >> all right. this is not -- >> is this a prank or anything? >> no. no. >> my gosh. >> guests can go this right at seaworld and explore the reef. >> ellie jumped. we are quite a pair. >> but these animals are found close, called carpet sharks in the family of carpet sharks

>> two things that don't exist in the ocean. undertoe and riptide. >> really? >> rip current. you can see on this graphic a little bit a lot of foam going back out in the the ocean in a perpendicular manner. >> show us point to it. >> if you're standing here in knee high water, next thing you know a couple sets come in and now you're up to your neck and you can't stand up and it takes you back out. water wants to go back out. so they call it rip current. next thing you know you just went from being den feet from the shore to being 125 neatmeters out. >> what do you do? >> don't panic. i've pulled many swimmers experts, out of rip currents because they panic. >> but it's hard to say be quiet and float. >> so what are you supposed to go? >> after about 25 meters 50 meters, the rip current will stop and you swim side to side.

>> parallel with the ocean? >> parallel with the ocean and you can escape out the side. >> so what ultimately is the problem? you cert you exert so much energy? >> you panic and you drown. >> what about boating? >> the main problems we have with boats is partying on the boats. alcohol. it's similar. just watch. everyone has to cover each other. sometimes people fall off a boat they don't even know. >> you should have a designated driver just like you do -- >> exactly. >> everyone should wear a life vest. >> especially kids. where do kids like to go? they go right to the edge of the boat and they're hanging their handout. the boat hits a wake. they'll fall over. >> one thing you didn't mention is the pool alarm. what is that? >> well these pool alarms are effective, they work they are battery powered. >> so check your batteries. >> what does do it? >> if someone jumps in the pool
