standing by is anthony slaughter, of course, with a look at the holiday forecast. >> a little fire in the sky. kind of fitting. we have fog out there built in the coastline to our inland valleys. do i have an alert headed to the sierra, unusual weather. showers building. flash flood watch in high sierra today from 11:00 this morning. that's when the rain will start until 8:00 this evening. they are expecting hefty amounts, 1 to 3 inches of rain. your forecast for the rest show temperatures nice and comfortable in the bay. warm down towards southern california. palm springs near 110. las vegas 103. again, showers and thunderstorms for tahoe and places like that here in the bay area, temperatures are going to be nice and comfortable. starting off mild in the 50s and 60s with that cloud cover but by the end of the day 80s for inland valley. for the most part we'll still see a warm day in the tri-valley. east bay, peninsula, even san francisco, right at room temperature, so it's going to be nice and sunny. the fog does roll back in this evening, headed to san francisco

for fireworks display. of course, no big surprise. some fog, drizzle at the coastline as well. but cooler conditions headed this way the upcoming week. >> after all that heat, people appreciate. >> i would agree. >> anthony, thank you. cracking down on firecrackers. the fourth of july means the sky will be lighting up in many places across the bay area firefighters say there will be zero col rans for illegal fireworks. they are worried about the fire risk especially with historic drought conditions. authorities say anyone caught with illegal fireworks will face hefty fines. $1,000 a pop. >> anything that shoots fire all over the place. anything that shoots into the air. anything that explodes. anything, for lack of a better term, shakes your house, you can feel it go through your rib cage. police are asking everyone to celebrate legally and safely not just to avoid the fines but also injuries. cal fire is going to great heights to make sure illegal fireworks don't start any brush

fires in the south bay. firefighters are on alert in a lookout tower on mount hamilton. they plan to stack that tower all day hoping to get a jump on any potential fires. for the first time in 10 years, the fourth of july fireworks show is back at great america. many people say they look forward to this event. it's an old tradition they are hoping to share with their kids. park officials say past shows used to stop traffic on highway 101. they are hoping tonight's show will have the same appeal along with same big turnout. they are say they are just as excited about the upcoming independence day. >> great america for years was the biggest fireworks show in the bay area, especially south bay. it's been in hiatus for 10 engineers but we're very happy to bring it back this year. >> this is one of the busiest weekends for santa clara's amusement park. in san francisco, crews are preparing for tonight's big show along the waterfront. pier 50, workers loading four barges with fireworks. the show will last 25 minutes,

and it will feature more than 5,000 fireworks, which are being carefully positioned. >> we don't focus as much on the big stuff, because of the f word, keep things mid to lower range because of that pesky fog rolls in it doesn't obscure too much. >> by f word, he meant fire. festivities run all day. fireworks set to launch 9:30 pier 59 this. is one of 60 fireworks displays around the bay area this weekend. we've compiled a list of all the fireworks shows. that is at nbcbayarea.com. just click on the fourth of july events guide in the upper left-hand corner. right place, right time. an off duty firefighter saved nine people from a burning south bay home. east san jose home did not have working smoke detectors. luckily a firefighter saw smoke coming from the attic of the home and helped to get that family out. you can see the red cross there already to offer emergency

services. that fire broke out yesterday around 9:a.m. on jessica way near 101. that's not far from the middle school. crews say because of the quick response there wasn't much damage. they believe an electrical fire. getaway femt on peninsula sends a police officer and another man to the hospital. this is video of the aftermath. it happened at rhonert park yesterday afternoon. happened after an officer responded to a man threatening to kill someone. he jumped in the car smashing into the officer's car. see the damage. both the officer and man were hurt. the officer released, the man treated. we're learning more about the man accused of killing an east bay home at san francisco's pier 14. authorities say francisco sanchez has a lengthy rap sheet.

seven felony convictions. he's also been deport the five times. in march he was booked on outstanding drug warrant. federal officials requested his detainer, he was released in april. san francisco's sanctuary policy only turns over undocumented immigrants if there's an active warrant for their arrest. the parents of kate steinle said they aren't dwelling on the city's policy instead thinking of kind strangers who brought flowers and built a memorial for their daughter. >> a lot of kindness wins out over evil. we're hanging our hat on that. kate would as well. >> they said they had no animosity against the man who took their daughter's life in what appears to be a random act. a 27-year-old man died when a stairway collapsed in folsom. you can see the stairway torn

off from the building. a friend said he was heading down the stairs when the collapse happened yesterday afternoon. >> as soon as we were walking down, the upstairs collapsed. i barely make it out of that collapse. and he, the victim was just behind me. the stairway collapsed, the whole section collapsed. nothing breaking down, the whole section collapsed. he fell and the stair land on his body. it's just shocking. i'm still -- i still can't believe this happened. >> residents say they have complained about problems with the stairs in the past. building inspectors are now trying to find out what went wrong. this follows last month's balcony collapse at an apartment complex in berkeley. in that case inspectors believe severe dry rot was the reason for the collapse which killed six people. alameda county prosecutors have launched an investigation and they say criminal charges may

follow. are there more victims? that is the question investigators are asking after the arrest of a nevada high school track coach accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student. nevada police arrested him at the airport after he arrived home from a hawaiian vacation with his wife. the marin county sheriff's department said the arrest came after the victimed mother contacted them. she was concerned about the texts wallet 64-year-old coach and her daughter. >> it was determined there was significant cause to arrest him, he has been having sexual relationship with 17-year-old girl. >> he's out on bail. he's coached at novato high for 20 years. amidst fireworks and celebrations, fourth of july weekend also has a history of being one of california's deadliest on the roads. the chp, though, is working to change that. they are in a maximum

foggy san francisco. don't worry, things will be clearing out. it will be nice for independence day celebration. maybe a little drizzle in the city. the vaccine law. protesters calling for the right to choose whether or not to immunize their kids. earlier this week governor brown signed a controversial bill into law that mandates all kids be vaccinated before being allowed to attend school with a couple of rare exceptions. opponents said the law unfairly restricts parents. they are working to repeal it. the law is set to go in effect next year. >> a lot of families here whose children have suffered negative reaction to their vaccines. they don't want the same for their siblings. they are fighting for the right to be able to opt out. >> in response vaccinate california, a group supporting the law said, quote, california will be a safer and healthier place once sb 277 takes effect.

moms and pediatricians are in agreement, vaccines work, vaccines save lives. expect to pay a little more for your monthly electric bill. california utility companies are changing the way they charge you. state regulators approved a new rate structure. instead of four different levels of pricing, there will now only be two. it's hard to say how much more you'll be paying but many customers will be charged at least $10 more on their monthly bill. the new rates will kick in by 2019. a historic voyage. this plane, called the impulse 2, just broke the record for the longest nonstop solo flight ever. two swiss pilots took turns flying that solar airplane over five days from japan to hawaii without a drop of fuel. the trip was risky. there was nowhere for the plane to land in an emergency and it typically flies at about 40 miles an hour depending on wind speed. coming up on "today in the

rains there. continue to be the case as we head through the day. in fact, that's why we have a flash flood watch posted by national weather service. from 11:00, that's when expected to intensify from 8:00 this evening. you've heard we have lightning strikes, fires burn in the area. that's why they have flash flood watch. not only raining heavy but burned land, received that. south bay, 63, peninsula at 64, east bay 62. your high today coming down, 86 in the south bay. still along there, 84, east bay, 83. tri-valley, that's going to be one of our hot spots today with temperatures near 90 degrees. at the coastline, nice and comfortable. 6 in san francisco. can you see that fog on our lens there. as we zoom out, show you what's happening at least as we move towards the future cast. this is around noon, 11:30 this morning. showers expected to develop across the sierra. look how the shower activity

really intensifies there. we're talking rain all day long into the evening. here at home, though, sunshine from santa rosa down towards gilroy and even into monterey. we're expected to stay dry today and tomorrow. that fog will thicken up as we head to monday. as we're looking for things to do, alameda county fair, that ends tomorrow. you can head out there today or tomorrow and enjoy lots of fun activities for the family. 89 degrees today, 87 for tomorrow. it is expected to stay sunny even at our coastline as we head through the afternoon hours of it's going to be cool at the coast. 65 your beach forecast, pacifica for today, half moon bay a little bit warmer but not overaoverly warm. santa cruz, which is where you really want to be. lots of of folks headed to the beach. 74, a little cooler at the coastline. not bad. 74 not bad at all at the coastline. future cast, i want to show you what's happening in the upcoming week. we've got all the hot air we experienced this past week off the desert southwest. now a trough developing across

parts of the pacific. this is going to move this way slowly each and every day and maybe give up a little bit of fog for monday and tuesday and some drizzle at the coastline. i don't think we're going to get any rain out of this. as it moves inland, though, sierra showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue. not great news. we do need the rain but we really don't need it all at once. this is something to watch upcoming week. showers, thunderstorms for sierra. for us morning fog, afternoon sun. temperatures cooling, though, look at this. 86 in san jose today. wen 75 degrees. same deal for east bay valley. 90 today. look at that, close to 80 by tuesday and wednesday. temperatures do cool off a little bit as we head to upcoming week. unfortunately for us no rain in the forecast. we'll have to watch that fire season especially today as temperatures will be near 90 in inland valleys. back to you, vicky. >> "today in the bay" is back after this short break. up next we'll show you what's been killing thousands of sea

studying a disturbing phenomenon happening at bay area labs. thousands of sea urchins dying in their care. "today in the bay's" joe rosato jr. looks into what's behind the mysterious die off. >> they are often covered with stuff. >> reporter: there is probably no office. >> you can see them in the tide pool right here. >> reporter: with a more breathtaking view than bodega marine laboratory in bodega bay. for a marine biologist, no place with better access to the creatures she's studying. >> this is a purple sea urchin. they are extremely common or were extremely common on the california coast. >> reporter: she studied inhabitants. >> tide pools were purple covered in so many urchins. >> reporter: then one day she noticed something strange. >> the seawater that was blue was icy colored.

>> reporter: inside tanks fed seawater from the ocean something disturbing was happening. >> we all of a sudden started noticing urchins dying in the laboratory. we had thousands and they all died. this is a direct reflection of what's happening. >> reporter: outside the environment, the news was just as grim. along 62 miles of coastline between mendocino and bodega bay, purple sea urchins and tiny six-arm sea star are in peril. >> they were wiped up from the entire range. >> reporter: now colleagues have published a paper detailing the die off and more importantly pointing the finger at the culprit. >> we're proprietary sure it's a species of plankton sometimes referred to as bloom. >> reporter: increases in harmful algae in the last decade have caused mass dieoff of species. the bloom is blamed for the current explosion of

ark, flash flood watch from tahoe and i don't vehement. keep that in mind if you're headed that way. otherwise at home beautiful day. temperatures starting off mild as well. 50s and 60s, 59 san francisco, 63 in south bay. later on this afternoon, temperatures will be really nice, 68 with plenty of sunshine in san francisco. a little breezy there, 73 for east bay, 78 for peninsula and mid-80s for north bay and south bay. tri-valley will be the warmest near 90. again, 10 degrees cooler from where it was this past week where we had triple digit heat. it's all relative, still warm inland just not as hot. >> that's welcome news. we have friends visiting from the east coast. >> humidity. >> right into heat and humidity in the bay area. >> it will cool off and humidity will come down. >> look forward to it. thanks, anthony. fireworks advance and firefighters are getting ready for fourth of july celebration. great america is hosting its first fireworks show in almost 10 years. the dry brown hills and drought

have many community leaders concerned about illegal fireworks. "today in the bay's" robert honda has more on local authorities and their push know you to leave it to the professionals. >> california's great america plans to resume its fourth of july show with a big bang. officials know it has to be spectacular. >> we have a lot of water resources right behind us right here. we create a very safe environment, watered down for regulations, everything with recycled water. >> no more cities and organizations various times canceled shows because of weather conditions have resumed including san jose. the response seems enthusiastic. san jose giants sold out its fourth of july event and have another planned sunday. >> this is going to be as good as the one downtown. it always is. >> firefighters say the more shows the better, since they say they hope the large selection of shows will cut down on illegal neighborhood shows. santa clara county fire chief investigators dennis johnson says many of the powerful

fireworks. city officials say they are a bit nervous. >> obviously everyone's concerns are raised because of the isis activity going on. >> isis urging sympathizers to attack in the u.s. no specific plots uncovered. in pittsburgh, they are on alert. >> that type of thing, there generally is no precursor warning because of the nature of it. >> reporter: here is a warning. the roads are jammed. this is new jersey on the way to the beach, the heaviest holiday traffic in eight years. denver, cheap gas has more people driving. >> prices today are almost $0.90 per gallon lower than last year. >> jammed roads, check. fear of terrorism, check. millions having holiday fun, check. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. we have some breaking news out of the south bay to tell you about. san jose police investigating a stabbing that left one man dead.

it happened on north king road about 5:00 this morning. the victim was taken to the hospital where he later died. we will bring you more information on that when we get it. a checkered history. we're learning more about the man accused of killing an east bay woman at san francisco's pier 14. authorities say francisco sanchez has a lengthy rap sheet, seven felony convictions. he's been deported five times. in march he was booked into san francisco county jail on an outstanding drug warrant. federal immigration officials requested his detainer but sanchez was released a few weeks later in april. san francisco's sanctuary policy only turns over undocumented immigrants if there's an active warrant for their arrest. the parents of kate steinle say they are not dwelling on the city's policy, instead thinking of the kind stranger who brought flowers and built a memial for their daughter. >> a lot of people and kindness

"today in the bay's" chuck coppola has more. >> sherry fitzgerald had no idea she was swimming with sharks until she came out of the water and went up to a man who had been waving his aways at her. >> a picture of me in the water with a shark 10 feet away from me. i got out of the water then and decided i'm done. >> reporter: the great whites have drifted as close as 20 yards from shore, though most have been seen farther out. >> multiple shark sightings in

certain areas. but the water is open, beaches open to the public this weekend. >> shark warnings stay posted at sea cliff and new brighton state through the july 4th weekend and perhaps to next week. the latest sighting was two days ago. >> it's a little scary, especially with shark attacks in north carolina. you kind of think the same thing could happen here. >> reporter: last week a helicopter pilot saw at least 14 great whites. jeff phillips, an oceanographer said great whites have been seen here before but rarely this many as once. >> it's nothing new for me, but i know it's concerning. >> it's concerning specifically when they spotted 14 in one spot. >> that's interesting in itself right this, 14. >> the shark warnings are only advisories. no one is being kept out of the water. but getting to the water this holiday weekend may be more difficult than usual. besides highway 17 traffic, a large number of parking spaces won't be available because of

fences put up to help law enforcement check bags and coolers for alcohol. >> the fencing is here to try to regulate the access point to the beaches so we can advise the public as they come on there's no glass, fireworks, zero col rans weekend for that. >> chuck coppola, nbc bay area news. beachgoers in north carolina are also keeping an eye out for sharks this weekend. seven people have been bitten in the last three weeks. that's a record for the state. officials decided not to close any beaches this fourth of july weekend. instead, the beaches will be fully staffed to keep a close eye on swimmers and surfers out in the water. now to a developing story overseas. loins at bank atms not to mention tensions continue to grow in greece this morning. this on the eve of a closely watched bailout referendum. greek banks have been closed all week to prevent a crash from mass money withdrawals. a few have been reopened to help

coliseum. a spectacular show after mariners. game two is today at 1:05. the a's were looking to give their fans fireworks on the field last night and they got off to a great start. oakland jumped out to a 3-0 lead. sadly it would not last. the mariners put on a power display that included four two-run homers. seattle scored nine unanswered runs before a comeback. mariners beat green and gold 9-5. to the nation's capital now, giants taking on the washington nationals. right to the top of the seventh, no score, buster posey changes that with a shot to the center. nets had an answer in the bottom half, robinson crushes two-run homer and that would be the game winner. san francisco falls to washington 2-1. burn scars, that's why they have that flash flood watch in effect. no rain, nice and sunny once we get rid of fog. 63 in south bay, 64 peninsula, 57 north bay. look at these temperatures this afternoon, nice and comfortable for most of us. there will be some hot spots like south bay reaching up to 86 but peninsula, east bay, mid to upper 70s there. san francisco, it's going to be cool today. 68 for that fog. north bay in the mid-80s and try valley, close to 90 degrees today. hot in the inland valleys but nice and comfortable peninsula, east bay. showers i was telling you about, there they are. at noon, future cast, across parts of the sierra. they will intensify this afternoon continuing from 7:00 to 8:00, then start to move out of here. notice the bay area, no rain for us. drizzle at the coastline tonight but otherwise expecting a nice, dry day. now, as we fast forward to the upcoming week, i want to show you what's going to happen on the future cast. this is an area of low pressure

across pacific. that will continue this way each and every day. by monday more drizzle, thicker marine layer. that will mean a shorter sunshine day monday and tuesday but more cloud cover in the morning hours. no rain for us unfortunately. sierra showers will continue all the way through the wednesday and thursday this upcoming week. along with heavy rain they are going to get today, more showers expected for monday and tuesday all the way through wednesday and thursday. great news for the drought, not great news getting all the rain at once. of course you know that story, saturated ground, just can't handle the rain all at once. here at home, no rain for us. unfortunately stay dry, morning fog, afternoon sun. temperatures cool off, good news for fire danger as you move forward. 80 for san jose today, 75 by wednesday. cooling trend for east bay valley. close to 90 today, closer to 80 as we head tuesday and wen. in san francisco, no big changes here. temperatures close to 70 today and then closer to 60 as we head to tuesday and wednesday. the cooling trend does continue,

"today in the bay" crunched the numbers in this week's reality check. >> in the hills of silicon valley sits the golden land of opportunity. trademarks by companies like tesla, twitter and the rest of the technology titans. silicon valley rocks the perception of being, well, rich. so when president obama trumpeted a new plan this week to boost overtime pay for millions of middle class workers, some here might have rolled their eyes. i mean, how many people could the proposal really affect? we did find optimism. >> i worked a lot of overtime hours to put myself through school and things like that. so i'm glad to see there are laws like that to protect people. >> it's great. people are going to spend money.

i mean, you know, you have kids and children and health insurance and life insurance. we need more money. >> who is getting all this newfound money? here is white house domestic policy director cecilia munoz. >> under this rule if you earn $50 or less and you're a salaried worker you would be eligible for overtime. 5 million workers will receive the benefit of this in the first year of its implementation. >> fact check time. in the u.s. white house highlights 4.7 million people that would become eligible for overtime benefits under its proposal. california boasts the highest number of any individual state. 420,000 people. well, that's odd. we had russ hancock and our friends at joint venture silicon valley crunch numbers for us. california has 4 million people who make between $23,000 and $50 orb the salary you need to qualify. only a tenth of them would get more money. >> is that a significant change? >> no, it's not. our president is trying to help

people. we understand that. this is not going to make a significant dent in a situation in california, certainly not in silicon valley. >> yes. silicon valley. what about workers here in that's the second part of our fact check. in silicon valley, joint venture found 157,000 people who make theness salary -- the necessary salary for ot, contract workers, think about uber drivers. those who already receive overtime, how many would you be left with? likely only 15,000 people. >> when you talk about 15,000 people, the same ratios that are going to see $15, $20, $25 more per hour overtime is that enough to give a jolt to the local economy? >> no, absolutely not. you're talking about the most rarified economy in the united states, you could say the world. this is a prodigious regional economy. it's at the center of the tech

it was anything but fun for people visiting a florida amusement park yesterday. the giant ferris wheel called the orlando eye suddenly stopped trapping dozens of people in enclosed pods. they were several hundred feet in the air in sweltering heat. rescuers took two hours to get everyone back on the ground safely. the eye's manager says it was a technical glitch with the ride. it is a fourth of july tradition now in it's its 99th year. today is the nation's hot dog eating contest on coney island. yesterday the competitors showed up in brooklyn for the official weigh-in. that includes joey chestnut from san jose. he's an eight-time champion looking for his ninth win in this contest. >> if i find my rhythm, i should be able to be unstoppable. i should be a machine and be
