that will be the case this week. keep that in mind if you're doing traveling over the golden gate and bay bridges. a mix of sun and clouds this morning. temperatures mild. 60 degrees in san francisco. 67 in the city later on today. it will be breezy as well with a good mix of sun and clouds. coming douj from the north bay. 80 degrees there as well. comfortable room temperature. mid 70s there. a little warm in the south bay. mid 80s. there we're under a cooling trend. the next couple of days, temperatures cool off by 5 to 10 degrees. we may even have some showers for the coming week. >> we'll keep our fins crogers crossed. >> we begin this morning with a stunning confession in a murder on the peninsula. the story developing right now in san mateo after a woman turns herself in. officers say a 40-year-old woman went to police last night telling them she killed her 66-year-old neighbor. authorities found the woman dead at the scene due to head trauma. this happened around 8:30 on

north clair monremont street. police don't believe any other suspects were involved. they were still investigating this incident. this is san mateo's first homicide of the year. >> firefighters in backerville worked into the night to save people and homes from a massive grass fire still burning this morning. about 100 people had to flee their homes just take a look at this video. so far, more than 300 acres have burned. high winds spread the flames very quickly last night. the backerville fire department says it is now at 50% containment. the red cross is helping people who have to leave their homes. voluntary evacuations were lifted an hour ago. >> four people are out of the home this morning after some fourth of july festivities sparked a house fire in san jose. it happened shortly before 10:00 last night. this is near center and capital expressway. firefighters say neighbors were lighting fireworks when one fell into the backyard and started the fire. no one was hurt.

>> oakland firefighters were also busy last night dealing with multiple fires throughout the city sparked by fireworks. illegal fireworks filled the night sky in the east bay. a grass fire broke out in the oakland hills after 10:00 last night. it burned a quarter acre at skyline boulevard. crews say they found a picelo pete at the scene. >> this is about as crazy as it's been, maybe a little earlier in the night when some of the professional shows were going off. >> these are not professionals, right? >> no, i think this is everybody in the neighborhood. >> firefighters dealt with the similar situation earlier in the day. this fire on castle drive near the lake shabow space and science center. no homes were threatened and no one was hurt in either incident. our chopper found illegal shows in the air in san jose last night as well. police say anyone busted for setting off banned fireworks would face fines of $1,000 per incident. the professional shows, though

dshgs not disappoint. here's a look at one of the public fireworks shows across the bay area. this one put on by the san jose giants. thousands of people came out to enjoy the 17-minute-long display. choreographed to music. >> we get a great view of the fireworks. everybody's really nice. we bring, you know, can you barbecue out here. everybody is very mellow. there is no fighting. >> the crowds grow larger and larger every year. the fireworks are louder and louder. it's awesome. >> some folks lined up for hours before the show to get a good spot. they say it was worth it and they were happy to shart experience with their families. >> well, we will show you the warning from the chp this weekend to drink drivers. the day surrounding the fourth of july holiday are traditionally some of the deadliest of the year. extra officers are patrolling bay area roadways for suspected drunk drivers and people not wearing seat belts. san francisco and oakland police are also just a few of the

departments setting up drunk driving checkpoints again tonight. >> campers say it came out of nowhere. this morning two people are recovering after a tree came crashing down on their campsite. the branch fell at about 10:40 on friday night at the live oak campground in the state park. the 2 1/2 foot diameter branch hit a 47-year-old man. he was airlifted to the hospital with a serious head injury. another younger man was treated for scrapes and bruises. >> then we heard crackling. what is the crack snlg we thought maybe fireworks, fourth of july. and then it just started crashing and a loud boom. >> the campground is full for the holiday weekend. rangers say the trees are surveyed periodically but they did not know when the last inspection was done. >> the search will continue today for a teenager that disappeared in a north bay lake. this is happening at lake sonoma. that is 40 miles northwest of santa rosa. the county sheriff's divers were

called in to assist yesterday afternoon. deputies say two teen boys were being pulled across the lake in an inner tube when one fell off and went under. deputies want to remind everyone that even strong swimmers should be wearing lifejackets, especially in deep water. >> if they're going to be in the water and the water is 30 to 200 feet deep, you know, there is no reason not to wear a life vest. >> also in sonoma county, a pittsburgh man in his early 20s drowned in the river yesterday. friends say he was floating behind a raft with two kids but somehow flipped underwater. his bod qua was recovered. three homicides in just over a week. a spate of violence on san jose streets. a man was stabbed to death. police found his body yesterday on north king road near allen rock avenue at 5:00 a.m. he was stabbed at least once and later died at the hospital. officers have not identified the victim or provided any additional details on a suspect. we now know what caused a

deadly stairwell collapse. dry rot is likely to blame for the collapse at the 16-year-old apartment complex. the management company says there was an incident within the last year involving another stairwell collapse. crews have been repairing or replacing the stairs in the building. a 27-year-old man was crushed when the stairwell fell on top of him. >> greeks today are casting ballots in a historic reverend up that may change the country's financial future. greeks are voting on whether to accept more austerity measures to pay back greece's debt or face further alienation from europe. nbc's reporter reports from athens. >> reporter: greece is walking a tight rope. polls are opening for a vote that could change the future of europe. greeks will decide whether to accept austerity measures that europe is demanding. campaigning was banned to day but last night thousands from both sides filled the streets. the prime minister was among them. calling on greeks to vote no to

your time now is 7:10. we want to give you a live look outside from our sky camera network at the bay bridge toll plaza. a few clouds in the sky. cooler today than it was yesterday. anthony slaughter will be by in a moment to give that you complete seven day forecast. in the central valley, police are looking for the person who threw an explosive device into a backyard during a party. six teenagers were hurt. 60 teams were at a home on friday night. police say someone threw an explosive over the fence and into the backyard. it blew up near a group of teens. five were taken to local hospitals. the sixth was airlifted to children's hospital in oakland for treatment of an eye injury. one father says he showed up to pick up his daughter and found a chaotic scene. >> all the kids running out of the house, bloody shirts and pants. very scary moment to pull up to. >> authorities are looking into

in fact, inland we had a little cloud cover. not as much as we saw yesterday. you know what? that marine layer is intensifying. as we head through the day to day and tomorrow, we are going to be watching that. and it's going to be for morning drizzle. not only for monday but for tuesday, wednesday, all the way through the upcoming week. you'll notice the temperatures are mild this morning. we're in the 60s for the most part. 59 in half moon bay. 57 in santa rosa. san francisco at 60 degrees. we did have some fog this morning. in fact, you can see from this shot a little bit of a rain droplets on the lens this morning. drizzle coming down. that will be the same case as we head towards the next few mornings. the coastal drizzle will be with us today and until 10:00 at the immediate coast. then we start to clear up our inland valleys. look at the future cast. we take you through the afternoon. that coastal fog hangs on tight today. so we're not going to see a ton of sunshine at the immediate coast. it is going to be a cooler day there. even inland valleys, tonight we'll see more showers and thunderstorms pop-up across the sierra. and that will start around 6:00, 7:00 this evening.

highs to day are going to be comfortable. much cooler than they have been the last couple days. mid 70s for the east bay and pen ins l.a. south bay, you'll be coming down just a little bit. mid 80s. still warm in many spots there. trivalley, still warm there. definitely not as hot. we don't have any 90s today like we had yesterday if you were at the county fair. 67 for san francisco. breezy today. there are the trough developing across the pacific. that's going to continue to add towards our sea breeze that's going to strengthen as we head towards the next couple of days. that will mean more morning fog and again some drizzle at times. for inland valleys, woo he will see temperatures cooling back into the 70s and low 80s as we head towards tomorrow and tuesday. and you're really going to notice it as we head towards wednesday. that's when 60s are going to take over most of the inner bay with just a few 70s out there as well. take a look at what i'm talking about. you'll notice that summer heat does break this upcoming week. we'll be at 79 for san jose. mid 70s by wednesday and

thursday. more cloud cover by then. even the east bay valley expecting temperatures near 90. by wednesday and thursday, temperatures cooling. and even the chance for some showers and thunderstorms by thursday. san francisco, i don't think we'll see the showers and thunderstorms like we'll see for our inland valleys by thursday. but the morning fog will be us with each and every morning. monday, tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. look at the temperatures. not moving a whole lot. we're looking at temperatures in the mid 60s. here's a shower chance i was telling you b it comes in wednesday night into thursday. we had the dry lightning. we had a few showers. same deal. wer wednesday night into thursday, we see that same pattern unfold. we'll see a better chance of seeing any measurable prec precipitati precipitation. that comes across the east bay and south bay. i don't think it makes it far enough west to san francisco, peninsula just typical drizzle that we'll find there. so overall, vicki, as we head to the upcoming week, cooler temperatures, not as hot. definitely great news for that fire danger. back to you. >> thank you. up next on "today if the

senator bernie sanders who marched in an iowa parade. several candidates marched in southern new hampshire locations. a developing story now, negotiators are reporting progress on nuclear talks with iran. there is still a lot of work to be done. andrea mitch sl in vienna with the latest. >> reporter: technical experts on the delegation working with secretary of state john kerry and iran's foreign minister are working through what is the holiday weekend back home. they're trying to narrow differences and they have defeated in some key areas. they have, i am told, narrow differences and reached a tentative agreement on two out of three named central issues. they reached a tentative agreement at the expert but only at the expert level on lifting the u.s. sanctions and lifting the european sanctions on iran. they have not yet agreed on how to lift the united nations sanctions on iran and how those sanctions would snap back on

iran if iran were found to be cheating. that said, these tentative agreements still have to be resolved by the foreign ministers when they return on sunday to vienna. they still have to agree on how much access u.n. inspectors would have to military and other sensitive sites. so there's a lot left to do. but they're a lot closer to a comprehensive deal if they can come together on all of these unresolved issues. andrea mitchell, nbc news, traveling with secretary kerry in vienna. >> tunisia's president declares a state of emergency after last week's beach attack that killed 38 foreign tourists. the president there says it's his duty to keep another massacre from happening. he fears it would collapse the country's budding democracy and tourism industries. 30 of the victims killed by a lone gunman were british tourists. pleats killed the gunman, a

member of isis. the massacre is the deadliest in tunisia's modern history. >> summer is the time to hit the beach. a surge in shark attacks along the coast of north carolina has many people avoiding the water there. as nbc's reports, the tourism industry isn't the only one feeling threatened. >> the outer banks has never seen a summer quite like this. >> you've been coming here more than 30 years on vacation and this is the first year that you don't want to go in the watter? >> absolutely. that's right. this is the first year. >> seven shark attacks in north carolina in just three weeks. vacationers on edge after scenes like this, two men fishing in kill devil hills, reeled in a 6 1/2 foot shark before releasing it back into the water. beach patrol out in force but posted shark warnings few and far between. >> i think every year you come down here, it is certainly a consideration because after all they do out there in that water.

>> so why this year's shark surge? >> this year we went from water temperatures that were in the mid 70s to water temperatures that were in the mid to high 80s in the span of about five days. what that may have done is actually caused all of the sharks that are part of that migration to kind of move off at one big mass. >> they're not just threatening tourists, they're threatening lively hoods. local fishermen say the sharks are ruining their catches. >> you can look and there is three, four, eight, nine sharks because they know that you're going to hook a tuna and then dinner bell will ring. >> glen hopkins has been fishing for 35 years but he's never seen this many partially eaten fish. he captured this shark on an underwater camera. >> you know, you got the tuna right there getting ready and out of nowhere, a shark comes up and grabs the whole thing. takes it out of your hand. i would say last month $25,000 out of my pocket that's gone into a shark's belly. >> the communities are wondering if the attacks are over or

==scott/2 shot== dietary guidelines have 7:45. we want to give you laf look outside. looking nice. a little cooler than we have been used to this fourth of july holiday weekend. hope you're enjoying the last few hours of it. dietary guidelines have been in place for decades. how much fat should you eat each day? now the feds may do away with the guidelines. will that do away with the waistline? here is the reality check. >> fat, fat, fat. we're often told they're bad for us. remember the old school food pyramid? fats are squeezed in at the very top along with oils and sweets. the usda restricted total fat done sum togs a recommended 30 to 35% of daily caloric intake. until now. this year's guidelines could break a 40-year tradition with the current draft proposal calling for no limit on total fat intake.

welcome back on this sunday. temperatures are warming nicely. getting outside. lots of sunshine already even at the coastline. finding a good mix of sun and clouds. san francisco at 6 o degrees. 66 in san carlos. look at this. we have drizzle on the lens this morning. san francisco shot. the drizzle is going to be with us each and every morning this coming week. the future cast does show that story. the drizzle will be out of here by 10:00, 11:00. the cloud cover will hang on tight at the coastline. we start to clear out inland. look at what happens as we head towards the afternoon hours. thunderstorms here. they about one to two inches of rain up there. more expected to day. up to lake tahoe and reno. for us at home, the cloud cover will start to move back in this evening. the morning fog will be with us to start the week off for tomorrow. today's highs, nice and comfortable, especially through the east bay and peninsula. a little warm in the south bay. mid 80s there. san francisco is nice and cool at 67 degrees. north bay at 80. the tri valley, one of the

warmest as always. no 9 o's like we saw just yesterday. so we are under a cooling trend. and that cooling trend is going to continue this upcoming week because of this trough sitting out across the pacific. as that moves in, well, it's going to intensify that marine layer. that does mean coastal drizzle and falls this upcoming week. that also means cooler temperatures. 80s for our inland valleys. that includes the tri valley and north bay. but look at how that sea breeze really strengthens on tuesday and wednesday. so most of the inner bay will be in the 60s. the inland valley falling into the 70s. the tri valley holds on to the 80s. as we take you through the week ahead, you'll notice what i'm talking about. today, inland valleys especially like the east bay valleys, 87 ch. so obviously our temperature are cooling off with that marine air. inundating the bay area. we head towards thursday and friday though, that is when we have a better chance of seeing some showers in the bay area from some of that monsoonal

activity that will move this way. you can see on future cast. we move this through wednesday and thursday. the showers start to move into the sierra. some of those could make their way into the bay area wednesday night into thursday. the better chance of that happening comes in thursday night into friday. but if we do get any shower activity on wednesday night into thursday, it could be a repeat performance and like what we saw this past week where we had dry lightning. we'll be watching that as we head towards this upcome weekend. it won't be until thursday and friday. at least until then we'll be cooling off which is great news for the fire danger. we've been talking about that all morning. that will be some really welcomed relief as we head towards tuesday, wednesday and thursday, in the meantime sh another warm day for the east bay valleys. temperatures in the 9 09s. take it easy. remember, fourth of july is over. fireworks are done. >> fireworks are done. but take a look at this video from the white house and how they celebrated the fourth of july last night. >> we are grateful to our
