i.d.s, atm cards, how will we get home? >> reporter: fire officials say the fire fourth floor of the building is destroyed. in case you missed it over the weekend, one of those banner towing single engine pipers lost power on the fourth while flying on a busy california beach. the 23-year-old pilot managed to land the plane on the shore line and walk away unharmed but a 12-year-old boy playing on the beach was clipped by either the plane or flying debris. he was hospitalized with injuries. investigators will try to determine what went wrong. but for now, many are just glad the situation wasn't worse. also over the holiday weekend a gathering of two dozen family members ages 5 to 94 were standing on the deck of a rented north carolina beach home for a family photo when, all of a sudden, that deck gave way. gabe gutierrez has the story. >> i need all of the ambulances i can get. >> reporter: dispatchers got the first panic calls around 7:00 p.m. saturday. >> i was on the phone with 911 so i just counted people on the

ground. and i counted up to 21 and i just said, you just need to get as many units as you can here. >> reporter: a deck holding at least two dozen people, including children, had collapsed. >> they went to take a family photo and they were all standing there ready to take the photo and it collapsed. >> reporter: the injured ranged from 5 to 94 years old. >> hectic. a lot of people on top of each other. a lot of blood. broken bones. >> reporter: this lady was renting the house next door. >> it was truly sad to watch. there is kids lined up on the grass watching their parents and grandparents. >> reporter: the family, mostly from virginia, had rented this property for the holiday weekend. they were standing on this corner of the deck. most of the 24 injured have been treated at hospitals and released, but two of them remain in critical condition. gabe gutierrez, nbc news, emerald isle, north carolina.

a race that finished well after midnight. dale earnhardt jr. took the coke zero 400. the race was delayed by more than three and a half hours. he led 97 laps and crossed the finish line around 2:30 this morning. the race end inside a wreck that involved two dozen cars and fans suffered minor injuries. austin dillon's car went airborne and tore down part of a catch fence. fortunately he got out and waved to the fans. david ortiz, the first time in the franchise's 17,867 game history that a red sox first baseman did not record a put-out and something has not been seen in 115 years. ortiz struck out twice and had one walk. red sox beat the astros 5-4.
