meteorologist. >> we start out with low clouds and slightly more humidity this morning. we're in the lower 60s all across the bay. 60 to 61 degrees, but 55 degrees in the north bay with low clouds in spots. into the afternoon, we'll see these clouds hanging on for maybe a little longer than yesterday. reaching 69 degrees in san francisco, north bay, 78 degrees with afternoon sunshine, and 76 degrees in the peninsula while the south bay makes it up to 77 degrees. into the next few days, we may see a little bit of rain across the bay. i'll detail that in the microclimate forecast. for now, good morning. >> it's nice, we get more quality time with the low clouds. looking at the golden gate bridge, we can see the lights all the way across the span. also, the full screen look at the bottom left, you see the cones blocking off one lane, folks traveling through the area. we're looking at traffic flowing

nicely across the bridge and a smooth drive. isolated with the road crew, and doyle drive closing starting thursday night at 10:00 p.m. a smooth drive right now between the city, just a little slowing across 101. the rest of the bay, no major issues. we begin with new details on the deadly shooting on a popular san francisco pier. we know the gun used to not only belong to a federal agent, but it was stolen from the agent's car. >> kate steinle was shot and killed a week ago along the embarcadero. the man accused, juan francisco lopez sanchez pled not guilty to murder yesterday. the undocumented immigrant had been deported five times before and had been investigated on drug charges. he was later released when the charges were dropped. the deadly shooting hitting a nerve with a growing number of people blaming the city's sanctuary law for putting sanchez back on the streets. >> if the confusion at the federal level that has allowed

local communities to sort of be mischief us and in some eyes to be overly creative with the sanctuary policies. >> in a jailhouse interview, sanchez said he accidentally fired the weapon. >> presidential candidate hillary clinton weighing in on the sanctuary city policy. she said san francisco officials, quote, made a mistake, they were wrong to release sanchez from jail. she said they ignored strong evidence he should have been deported again, which would have marked the sixth time. many republican leaders agree with clinton. >> released in general society to commit a murder. does that make any sense to you? i'll tell you, it doesn't make any sense to the american public. >> that was senator ron johnson from wisconsin aggressively questioning a representative from i.c.e. during a hearing yesterday. >> republican presidential candidate donald trump has been putting his two cents into the

immigration debate, but he's not getting positive feedback. trump's comments about mexican immigrants are not sitting well with many latinos. he recently said immigrants are bringing drugs and crime into the u.s. a protest is planned for tomorrow at the hotel he's building. >> it's not going to affect me. here i am, i'm working. i'm grateful to be here. >> nine companies have severed ties with trump. new this morning, violence in college park, maryland. that's where three people are dead, another person injured after a gunman oipenned nire near the university of maryland overnight. two suspects got out of two separate vans and started shooting into a crowd. a woman and two men were killed. so far, detectives aren't naming suspects or motives, the university is warning students

to use caution in the area. >> a teenager charged with stabbing a 9-year-old boy to death in his own bed in discovery bay is back in court today for a preliminary hearing. the hearing will determine if there's enough evidence to send him to trial. defense attorney for the teen said mental illness played a role in the stabbing of the third grader. the teen has pleaded not guilty. testimony continuings to in the trial of a former high school security guard caught on surveillance video striking a student in a wheelchair. this video shows marshall mitchell slapping and knocking 17-year-old francisco martinez out of his wheelchair. mitchell faces child abuse charges. now a story you'll only see on nbc. they came for a wedding and instead they gathered to say good-bye to their son. greg ihm was walking on margaret street near 3rd in san francisco last wednesday night. that's when police say 26-year-old sean mcginnis lost

control of his motorcycle and slammed into ihm and another pedestrian. mcguiness was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. the collision happened as relatives were traveling to the bay area for his sister's wedding. >> hi, mom, it's greg again. it hurts so much. >> police are urging the district attorney to charge the driver with a long list of felony charges. at 4:36 right now, a mountain lion is causing a stir in one san francisco neighborhood and it's baffling residents and experts alike. this surveillance taking last week, that is not the only place the big cat has been seen taking a stroll. they think the other sightings relate to the same animal. also reported in the prusaidio just a couple blocks away from st. mary's cathedral and four days ago near lake merced. >> shocking to me, it's news. >> i didn't hear anything about that. >> most likely, it could have

been a -- an adult male leaving its mother's range, looking for a new range in which to live. >> well, these sightings are becoming more common on the peninsula and in the south bay. but in the city? back in may, a san mateo neighborhood was locked down as crews tranquilized a big cat. >> some wildfires could be treated as federal disasters. that's a proposal if house republicans go through. the bill will be considered tomorrow as part of a broader attempt to target overgrown national forest lands. the disaster part would allow federal agencies to tap into the disaster fund if they run out of money to fight fires. the administration said the house bill is a step forward but still does not go far enough. >> fire is a big issue in california. so, too, is the drought, and state water leaders are figuring out how to meet the drought regulations while still making money. the water resources control

the authors of the bill did not present it to the assembly health committee as planned. they pulled it because they were told it didn't have enough votes to advance. dedelay means it can't pass out of committee this year. the bill would have allowed terminally ill patients to end their lives with a help of a doctor. >> happening today, two major tobacco bills will be looked at by a state assembly committee. one aimed at curbing youth smoking. the other changes the legal smoking age to 21. both passed in the senate last month but still face tough obstacles in the assembly. tobacco companies are putting up a tough fight. >> one bay area city became the first in the area to hike the age limit to buy tobacco products. you have to be 21 or older to buy cigarettes in healdsburg. states should raise the minimum

age to 21. >> it's called the biggest advance against heart failure in more than a decade. the fda has approved a new drug. excitement has been growing since it was found it reduced the risk of heart failure more than any medication on the market. that trial shows a 20% reduction in the risk of cardiovascular causes. happening today, more than a decade after its inception, the bush era no child left behind education law is going to be up for debate on capitol hill. the senate right now working towards a bipartisan measure to rewrite the 2002 law. it would shift much of the federal oversight of the schools to the states and local districts. the white house wants changes to cap on the amount of time spent on standardized testing which is a component of the law. >> uc is launching a bold new

economy. stocks stages a big comeback on tuesday after being down 218 points, the dow closing up 93. the nasdaq up five to 4997. cvs is quitting the chamber of commerce. they stopped selling tobacco products last year and said the chamber's stance goes against their focus on health. it's trying to insure intellectual property rights are protected. twinkies have come back from the dead and may soon be headed for wall street. the maker of twinkies and other snacks is considering an ipo. shelving plans to sell itself. three years ago, the company went bankrupt and was close to shutting the doors for good before being rescued. >> that will be interesting. wonder what the symbol will be.

you have no shot afterwards. >> 4:48. theater etiquette has hit a new low as you can see in this video. a person watching a play climbed onstage to charge his cell phone. i know the batteries run low, but come on. it happened right before the curtain went unin new york city. crew member husband to tug him offstage. even more humiliating, the outlet he was trying to plug his charger into was a prop onstage. the crowd then booed the theater goer and he's not going to be allowed back in there ever. >> have you ever been somewhere, though, and looked for an outlet. >> the airport comes to mind. fully charged this morning, let's check in. >> maybe he was trying to check the weather and couldn't see what was going on. i don't know. that's kind of crazy. now, we look at these temperatures in the 60s this morning. and some low clouds as you head out the door.

it will be 77 degrees today in the south bay. mild and breezy. 70s all across the board in san francisco. making it up to 69 degrees. but here's the bright spot in the forecast. a little bit of rain, and it's comfortable for the weekend. this is what the futurecast shows. it shows how the satellite and the radar could look as we go into the afternoon. by 5:00, maybe some light sprinkles in parts of the peninsula and south bay. then a better chance of rain early in the morning as we stat out the day, spotty light showers, but the only bad thing that comes along with this, we could see lightning in the overnight hours. also for the north bay, that's where we will have our highest chance of actually getting some accumulating rain into tonight and into the day tomorrow. this is what our computer models pick up on, the possibility of .03 inch in san jose. doesn't sound like much, but this is a normally dry time of

year, and this is the normal amount of rain we get in the entire month of july on average. the north bay could see more around ukita and redding, maybe an inch of rain in those areas. also heavy rain for the sierra. that's the reason there's a flash flood watch that will be in effect as we go into the weekend, every clears out. we go back to normal. and we will have a sunny weekend ahead, picking out a few spots. expect highs to reach into the 70s, then a tad bit warmer into sunday. let's see what's happening now in news with sam and laura. >> if you want to go for the hike, the face of yosemite's half stone looks different. a massive sheet of rock fell from the mountain. the granite sheet that pilled off measured roughly 100 by 200 feet. it happened some time last week. luckily, no one was hurt or actually even saw it happen. the rock fall did not affect the popular cable rock height, but

hard to imagine how a highway breathtaking video to show you out of utah. when you see this, it's going to be hard to imagine how a highway patrol trooper escaped serious injury, yet he did. the trooper was responding to a car that hidroplaned and crashed into the median. then out of nowhere, another car skids into the median, sliding into the first one. it pins the trooper underneath the second car. firefighters had to use the skraus of life to lift the car off him. amazingly, he only suffered a few broken ribs. that car looks like it was moving 50, 60 miles per hour there. >> pretty slick on those

roadways. not on ours this morning. how are we looking? >> a lot better than that. thank goodness. just minor injuries considering the crash. look over here, looking at construction crews that have just turned off their lights except one truck at the top of the screen. the median on 101 southbound. this is where bob was talking about the lane closures and eventually the lane shifts back over to the left, toward the median. hopefully, that will mean a better commute overall on monday. let's look at the map, still light through the area, no slowing, and the bright lights from the overnight road crew look like they're just about it. we'll follow that. meantime, in chose, encircling the area where there was an earlier crash reported. and a nice smooth drive coming out of the altamonte. just a little slowing. >> you see a lot of crazy things on the roadways. well, the fireworks weren't the most memorable part of one new mexico sheriff deputy's patrol. a naked man drove away in his
