down is on for the closure of doyle drive. the changes you need to know about getting back and forth over the golden gate bridge. we start the morning with low clouds and mist and there may even be a couple of storms for the north bay. more on that coming up in the microclimate forecast. we're also starting the morning with road crews on the peninsula and a big problem for the bart lines. we're talking about a system wide delay. i will explain what's going on. >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." a good thursday morning. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we do begin with an update to breaking news, lock down lifted but nerves still rattled in an upscale bay area neighborhood, this after a late night home invasion robbery returned into gunfire. >> "today in the bay" bob redell joins us live from san leandro. the robbers are on the run, do they know if it's two or more suspects? >> reporter: at least with two, possibly four. just within the past 30 to 60

minutes san leandro police has cleared the home and neighborhood here on lake view drive, lifted that shelter in place. a lieutenant just informed us that the elderly man who lives in that home who was shot is expected to survive, even though he was badly hurt. it was around 12:45 this morning that those suspects, at least two of them in their early 20s, invaded that home here on lake view drive where this elderly couple lives. there was an exchange of gunfire between the husband who had his own gun and at least one of the suspects who had their own weapon. the husband was taken to the hospital, the wife was not hurt, she told police she believes her husband might have shot one of the suspects and at the time that she thought he height still be inside, hence the s.w.a.t. presence early on. as i mentioned police do believe the suspects got away. >> i don't know why this house, if you know this neighborhood it's a pretty quiet

neighborhood. not a lot of activity up here. so a lot of surprised by that. >> reporter: does it seem like it was targeted? >> i don't know. it's possible they were followed. >> reporter: police also don't know what if anything the suspects might have taken during this attempted home invasion robbery because there was that gun fire. police noticed at least one of the maybe's homes has a surveillance camera, detectives will be checking that later today to see if it captured any of this crime. reporting live in san leandro, bob redell, "today in the bay." new this morning, investigators spent much of the night investigating a deadly crash involving a person and a is vta train. this happened late last night off of tasmin and alder drives next to the cisco campus. no passengers were on the train at the time, investigators are trying to figure out exactly what happened. morning vta service is not going to be impacted. a series of commuting concerns today from the possibility of rain to a major road closure. >> we have a team in place to help you get around had this

morning and through the weekend for that matter. we begin with meteorologist kari hall and, kari, could some drivers see rain this morning? >> we're seeing some light rain and mist across parts of the bay area, especially for the north bay where there was some lightning earlier this morning, just to the south of ukiah and now the rain develops there, but there may be just enough of a mist coming through the air to wet the roads and that could cause a few concerns but of course not expecting think heavy rain and nothing that will help out with the drought. as you head out today keep this in mind, that you to want to leave just a few minutes early in case you do encounter one of those potty light showers, sunrise coming up in about 50 minutes. a mixture of clouds and sun later today and the possibility of some rain and thunder continues for the north bay and some lingering showers in those areas tonight while the rest ofs us continue on with clouds and the sunset will be at 8:37. much cooler today, but it will continue to warm as we head into the weekend with all of that

moisture moving out. more on that coming up in the next microclimate forecast. i will send it back to you. >> we mentioned a few possible obstacles, are you ready? tonight the main route on to and off of the golden gate bridge is going to be shut down. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang live near toil drive. it's going to be trick yie with that closure. >> reporter: that's right. it starts at 10:00 tonight. this will all be closed, richardson avenue as well as marina boulevard behind me. the concern is for tomorrow's peak commute hours. delays could reach up to four hours for some drivers. this shut down is happening so crews can put the final touches on the presidio parkway ro swrekt. they will go over a new short bridge and then into two new tunnels. this will eliminate the twists and turns and narrow lanes of the old doyle drive experience. project leaders say it this will lead to more safety and better views. >> i'm going to take tomorrow off and look forward to monday

morning. i think it's going to be beautiful. the work was done before time and i think on budget and i think it's going to be spectacular. >> reporter: take a look at what will be open and closed 10:00 tonight through 5:00 monday morning. you will not be able to access or enter the bridge from 101 in the marina. that leaves a giant bottleneck for drivers in both directions at park presidio and 19th avenue, golden gate bridge to highway 1, 19th avenue will stay open but expect major delays. parking lots at the bridge pavilion and vista points will be closed. if you have to access the city this weekend from friday through monday morning try the bay bridge. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." let's turn to mike inouye. you've got some work around. >> steph outlined everything. but one of the biggest work around is taking the ferry from the north bay over toward the ferry building. the east bay we offer ferries as well. we're looking over here because of this closure, cutting off between the marina trickett and

as take a symbol of hate off of these grounds on friday. >> obviously very emotional for some. the bill now goes to governor nikki haley who says she will sign it into law. back at home now, this afternoon family and friends will gather in pleasanton to honorer kate steinle, the 32-year-old who was walking along with her father on pier 14 in san francisco last week when she was shot and killed. steinle graduated from a.m. adore valley high school and cal poly. the man accused of killing her juan juan frz pleaded not guilty earlier in the week. some surprising new details on that case. the chronicle is reporting not only was the sheriff's department aware of the return of the suspect to san francisco, the department apparently requested to have him returned. the chronicle says the sheriff's department asked to gain custody of lopez-sanchez upon his release from a 46-month federal

prison sentence. a few weeks after that in april san francisco deputies released him. sheriff mirkarimi has publicly questioned why federal authorities returned lopez-sanchez to san francisco. a teenager charged with stabbing a nine-year-old boy to death in his own bed is back in court. a judge must decide whether the man is competent to stand trial. defense attorneys for 18-year-old william shultz say mental illness did play a role in the staubinging of jordan almgren. the teen has pleaded not guilty. a former teacher from the east bay admitted to having child pornography. according to the mercury news mitchell wolf pleaded guilty to charges of having 50,000 pictures and videos. wolf used to work for diablo vis ta middle school but school officials say they did not find any pictures of had his former students. he faces ten years behind bars. it is a hotly debated topic,

the potential danger to fracking. that's when a state sponsored assessment of fracking risks is set to be released. the timing of the release is off. governor brown had asked for ahead of the release of a new set of tracking rules and regulations, but those rules were announced on july 1st. it is 5:09. time to check that forecast with meteorologist kari hall. some changes today? >> yeah, some mist, clouds and a little bit of drizzle in spots. maybe just enough to wet the roads and of course create some much cooler conditions all across the bay. it's 59 degrees in san francisco, the south bay is at 61 degrees, but let me take you to the east bay where now it is 60 degrees this in dublin, walnut creek 59 degrees and or rand da it is 56 degrees. a lot of clouds today but peaks of sun in spots in afternoon, only reaching 71 degrees in los gatos, palo alto 71 degrees and mission district at 64 degrees, napa 73.

>> announcer: you're watching "today in the bay." welcome back. it is 5:13. california public school districts are now barred from keeping their own rainy day funds. that's frustrating some district leaders. board members from five bay area school districts today will speak if in san francisco. they want sacramento lawmakers to change a senate bill approved last year forcing districts to spend surplus cash. reserves are capped at 6%. not enough they say to cope with unexpected costs. california teachers union supports the cap. san francisco leaders are going to try to cool the jets on red hot development going on in the mission district. the planning commission is going to discuss an initiative to slow future real estate and commercial projects in the mission. recent surge in development there is angering long time residents who say that rents are soaring out of control and jobs are being lost. supervisors recently rejected a similar plan. voters are going to weigh in on

the matter this november. it is 5:14. greece's government is racing to finalize a plan of reforms for its third bailouts. the country's new prime minister is meeting with finance ministry officials after requesting a new three year aid program from its european partners. the prime minister promises to enact reforms to taxes and pensions in return. details must be submitted by tomorrow morning so creditors can review them ahead of sunday's european union is summit. some glitches on the market yesterday, wall street hoping for a new start a day after a computer not trading offline for hours. >> one of several computer problems hitting corporate america, scott. >> good morning to you. let's talk about that. united airlines suffered problems, too. many of us said that can't be coincident, right, new york stocks exchange, wall street journal, united airlines. it turns out it was coincidence. the company that runs the new york stock exchange says it was an internal problem that knock it off line wednesday morning.

rise in california and experts say it's only a matter of time before we see the first human case this this year. 31 counties in california have reported west nile activity, ten more than at this same time last year. in the bay area all but san francisco and napa counties have seen signs of the west nile virus. tri-valley homeowners struggling to keep their lawns green during the drought have another way to get free recycled water, the dublin san ramone services district has opened up a second fill station and how brown with is your lawn? does it need 300 dwlons of water, maybe more? northeast how much you can get. 300 gallons of water per visit. there is no limit on visits per day. that station is located on clark avenue near the 580/680 interchange in dublin. >> that sounds tempt to go a lot of people. i would imagine you would have to be a dublin resident. >> and also have a water tank to move it back and forth. are he with going to see any rain today? >> just in the north bay, that's

the only place we have seen the rain. it looks like it fizzles out as it moves towards the east bay. maybe a slight chance of a shower there but otherwise we are staying all dry as we go into not only today, but the meck several face. let's get a look at what's happening out there now as you walk out the door. you see the low clouds and patchy mist. you feel that, too, and it's just in some areas to give us some very minor accumulation and make the roads wet, sidewalks wet, too. 61 degrees in the east bay, san francisco 59 degrees. today expect a high of 65 degrees. we see that chance of a showers and thunderstorms in the north bay but there will be some clearing had this afternoon and highs reaching into the mid 70s. here is a look at the radar. we've seen some lightning strikes across parts of the north bay, ukiah and north of santa rosa. we are still seeing lightning in those spots and this this is where we will continue to see some wet weather moving in and possibility of lightning

strikes, too. we will be watching that throughout the day but this is what the computer models shows and the future cast shows what the radar could look like. om of those source moving into fairfie fairfield. as it moves into the east bay it dries out and we will be left with the clouds. we still have that possibility of some clouds and mist all across the bay because of this low pressure system sitting just into our area -- or moving into our area. temperatures will be warming up, though, as we head into the weekend. warming up by another 5 to 10 degrees. a quick look at the weekend forecast, it will be beautiful, so go ahead and make some outdoor plans. that's a look at weather. let's get a look at some of the problems happening with the bart with mike. we're looking at the outdoor bart staying at oakland coliseum, i haven't seen any rain activity because of the stoppage right now. let's look at the map. we're talking about the stoppage between the bare fare and lake merritt stations. a richmond bound train was reported with smoke inside the car, they had to stop that and that's the reason for the halt

fires-- that burned several people. welcome back at 5:24. a live look outside at san jose. mid 70s temperatures for today. kari is going to have a close look at your raft coming up. gchl m recalling 165,000 hummers after 42 vehicle fires that burned several people. gm says ventilation fans can overheat and possibly start a fire. the company says three people received minor burns and several cars were completely destroyed. models being recalled include the hummer h 3 were 2006 to 2010 and the hummer h t3 from 2009 to 2010. gm no longer makes the hummer but it still honors those warrants. land recovery is recalling more than 65,000 vehicles due to a glitch in the door latches. the problem is cause the doors it to fly open while the vehicle is in motion. the recall covers 2013 to 2016 range rovers and 2014 to 2016

range recovery sport models. dealers are going to update the keyless entry software at no cost. they may be the leaders of tomorrow in the automobile industry and they are about to unveil a one of a kind car. each year stanford students take part in a solar car pro correct. this is video of the car that was created back in 2013. tomorrow the team's newest vehicle called octon will be unveiled. octon will take place in a race this october called the bridge stone world solar challenge, it's a 2000 mile race across the australian outback that includes dozens of solar cars made by teams from 25 countries. lots of changes happening in oregon, ever since recreational marijuana was legalized, one in particular is starting to raise eyebrows. you can now board an airplane in oregon with up to an ounce of marijuana as long as your flight has to stay within the state. how is it possible? airlines are regulated by the

some problems, too. so the patchy fog, mist and also the low clouds staying with us this morning as you walk out the door. it's in the lower 60s, 59 degrees in san francisco and the north bay still cloudy now at 60 degrees. we will continue to track that possibility of rain for the north bay as we go into the afternoon. i will have more on that and a look at the weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. right now back to you, sam and laura. it's 5:33. drivers beware, the count down is on for the closure of doyle drive. tonight the main route on and off the golden gate bridge will shut down. >> that could be problematic for many. "today in the bay" steffy chuang joins us live. >> reporter: we're told this could cause delays for up to maybe four hours for some drivers, especially those heading from san francisco towards golden gate bridge. this approach will be closed. richardson avenue as well as

marina boulevard, all shut down it. this is so you can say good-bye to the old doyle drive where its winding narrow lanes and welcome the new presidio parkway. drivers heading north will cross a short bridge and into two new tunnels. project leaders say this will make the drive much safer along with softening better views. traffic will be heavier especially for the peak hours tomorrow. you might want to avoid that golden gate bridge or if you can't get an early start. >> i come here every day. i have to get to my office every day and i have clients coming in the morning, i have court hearings. it's a lot, yeah. >> reporter: again t it starts at 10:00 tonight through 5:00 monday morning, you won't be able to access or exit the bridge from 101 in the marina district. that leaves a giant bottleneck for drivers in both directions at park presidio and 19th avenue, golden gate bridge to highway 19th avenue expect major delays. parking lots at the bridge pavilion and vista point will be

closed. one more note, as people get used to this new drive delays are expected for at least a couple of weeks. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang. let's turn to mike inouye where you have om work ards for folks. >> taking the if errey from the north bay over into san francisco, that's the water route, a beautiful one, that's what we suggest. you can take golden gate transit across the bridge but i wouldn't advise surprise it. also did he have talked about richmond bridge over across the bay bridge, that's a big work around. this section will be cut off so everybody coming from this side of the si anywhere in the city has to take 19th avenue up through the presidio area which is beautiful but cuts off traffic to and from the golden gate bridge. those are your options but better overall if you just avoid the area. if you don't have to go through the area. it's beautiful but maybe not this weekend. >> if you do have to get through this we have more on traffic routes and transit options for

why federal authorities returned lopez-sanchez to san francisco in the first place. former 49er ray mcdonald expected to appear in a san jose courtroom. the district attorney's office has not indicated what the case involves. mcdonald has been arrested three separate times over the past year, the last two arrests were tied to a domestic incident in am may. prosecutors is have not charged him in any of those cases. new this morning, a suspected bank robber under arrest after a heist in santa cruz. police say it happened at the wells fargo on river street yesterday. the suspect michael holt reportedly walked into the bank, simulated he had a gun and demanded money he then took off with cash. police say they later found him hiding under a bridge near the san lorenzo river. someone am if trouble this morning, actor tom sell electric, actually hot water, the "magnum p.i." star is accused of stealing water for
