frustrated traders with no access to stock prices had to manually cancel about 700,000 orders already in the system. at 12:09, the exchange twieted, we're experiencing a technical issue. >> this was an inconvenience here at the new york stock exchange, but because of quick thinking, as far as i know, no clients were hurt and nobody suffered a big loss. >> it came just hours after the computer system for united airlines also froze. fueling fears of cyberattacks. >> it appears from what we know at this stage that the malfunctions at united and the stock exchange were not the result of any nefarious actor. >> so while terrorism is ruled out, the cause is still unclear. and overnight software update may have played a role. >> up. and are we up? >> it wasn't until 3:10 p.m. the exchange was back up and running.

shutdowns like this are rare but not unheard of. 2013, another technical glitch paralyzed the nasdaq for three hours. >> going forward, do we need to change our protocol? absolutely. this can't happen again. we can't put ourselves in this position again. >> the dow closed down 261 points, not just because of the glitch, but also because the financial troubles in greece and in china. now, the day before, the hacker group anonymous posted a cryptic tweet suggesting there might be some sort of problem here, but again, homeland security officials stress they found no evidence to suggest this was a cyberattack, hoda. >> that tweet is interesting. gabe, thanks so much. meanwhile, as for the united airlines glitch, the airline said its flights are operating as scheduled this morning after the entire fleet was grounded worldwide for nearly two hours. tom costello was on it all day. wednesday. he's at reagan international airport this morning. how's it going? >> a good day to fly today.

we checked with flight aware. minimal delays and cancellations affecting the entire system. yesterday, a different story. this started at around 9:00 a.m. eastern time when united airlines says it lost a router, the critical component in the computer system. when they went down, so did the system that handles passenger check-in, scheduling, as a result, the faa ordered a united airlines ground stop. nothing moving. major rubhubs affected, newark, o'hare, l.a.x., houston, and the ripple effect across the system. for 90 minutes to two hours, united kept their planes on the ground, and then playing catchup throughout the day to try to assure the people eventually got to their destination. in all, according to united, about 1200 delays, about 60 cancellations affecting united and united express. united stressing it is unrelated to the nyse and in no way a hacking issue.

however, this is now the second time in about six weeks united has had a major computer program, and this has been happening for about two to four years since the merger with continental airlines. it has work to do in the i.t. department. >> thank you very much. shawn henry is the former assistant director of the fbi overseeing cybersecurity and crime. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. >> it took about a nano second after these two stories coming out for people to say are they connected and are these are the result of some cyber attack? how do these entities, the stock exchange and united airlines going about answering those questions? >> i think there are three points here. first of all, we're incredibly reliant on the internet for our day-to-day lives in the united states. when we turn on a faucet, we expect water to come out. when we hit a switch, we expect the lights to come on. that's what we expect with the internet. it's the same with the internet it impacts our entire life.

secondly that infrastructure is incredibly fragile. there are a lot of moving parts and there are going to be technical issues that are going to occur. i have talked to people in a position to know this was clearly a technical issue. the third piece that is critically important here is that while this was technical, there are absolutely adversaryies who are targeting our infrastructure and have the capacity to harm us and this is the type of thing that gets everyone's attention. if an adversary had done this this would have been a huge problem. >> let me ask you about this tweet that came out from anonymous, the night before the wall street computers went down and it says this quote, wonder if tomorrow is going to be bad for wall street. we can only hope. now, i mean you look at that and is that just pure coincidence? >> yeah i mean, certainly that would be suspect and the fbi and others would look at that absolutely. i think it was coincidence in

this particular case. i have talked to people who are in a position to know and multiple sources who say this was absolutely technical. these issues that occurred in multiple companies were not related. they were different types of technical issues so its appears that coincidence. however, again, this is an issue there are adversary groups that are looking to target or infrastructure. >> let me ask you about that. when the adversary groups see how vulnerable we are and when the airline shuts down does it embolden them and if it can happen with the airline and the stock exchange can it happen with the power grid and the computer that handles national security? >> no, matt it's happening every day. there are terrorist groups there are organized crime groups hacktivist groups like anonymous, foreign nation states that are targeting the infrastructure. they're stealing data. they have the ability to disrupt and potentially to destroy. we saw that recently with sony and north korea. to destroy infrastructure.

yes, imagine what happened yesterday multiplied five times, ten times, a hundred times, what that impact would be. this is a wake-up call. the government needs to take some more actions, there needs to be a lot more coordination. i can tell you i'm working with a lot of organizations in the fortune 500, they're aware and working diligently but this is an issue. we are suspect here. >> shawn henry, always good to get your perspective. we use our phones and when there's a glitch we get -- we panic. >> freak out. >> i can't get my e-mails. imagine the scale of what we're talking about. what we saw yesterday. >> just the timing of that tweet is really suspect. all right. now on to the presidential race and donald trump's controversial comments on immigration. the head of the republican national committee is telling the presidential candidate to tone it down. but that was after trump's very candid interview with nbc's katy tur. >> reporter: donald trump talked

for some passengers on board the southwest airlines flight out of chicago. the pilot aborted the takeoff at midway international airport after one of the engines caught fire. witnesses reported seeing sparks and smoke. this was coming from the side of the plane. fortunately no one was injured. 143 passengers though were taken back to the terminal by a bus. they switched planes for their flight to boston. baltimore's police commissioner is out of a job this morning. the city's mayor announced on wednesday that anthony batts is being replaced after nearly three years as the top cop. the firing comes 2 1/2 months after freddie gray died of injuries he sustained while in police custody. that was followed by a surge in violent crime. the move also comes one day after a police union reports that they criticized the batts leadership. the mayor denies it was influenced by that report. this morning some veterans are criticizing george w. bush for charging a veterans charity

a six-figure fee to speak at a fund-raising dinner. the charity is called helping a hero. they build houses for vets seriously wounded in iraq and afghanistan. and nbc news has confirmed the former president received $100,000 from them back in 2012. the event raised $2.5 million. helping a heroes chairman said they are proud president bush attended the gala and his presence was appreciated by the veterans and supporters of the organization. a bush spokesman did not respond to our request for comment. a u.p.s. driver is in some trouble this morning for kicking a man's dog during a delivery. it was all caught on camera. and you can see two dogs here approaching the driver. he kicks one of them knocks the dog off of its feet. then the dog's owner approaches and the driver shoves him backwards. the man said his ribs were injured. a u.p.s. spokesman said the

natalie azar is here. a lot of us are concerned about this every time we pop something in the microwave. what does the new study specifically say? >> let's think about this. this is relevant because we are concerned there could be chemicals in the environment that could be affecting our hormones and later on affecting, you know, metabolic things like diabetes and ultimately leading to cardiovascular risk. that's why they are looking at this. they are looking at bpa, which by the way, are in a ton of consumer goods as well as medicines. they were looking for the break down products of that in the urine of children. it was definitely not a study that was meant or designed to look specifically at these plastics and their health effects on children. i think that's important to get out from the beginning. they found a correlation and association between some of these compounds and a higher

risk of hypertension in these kids. observational only it was absolutely not a cause and effect finding. >> going forward so tonight if i have something in the refrigerator and i want to heat it up, there's some kind of plastic wrap on it. is it okay to put it in the microwave? >> here is the statement we want to put forth that the fda does regulate the plastics that come in contact with food. the most important take home message is to read the label on the package or the container. if it says microwave safe it is microwave safe. if it contains the recycles numbers 3, 6, and 7. the products were made with the chemicals of concerns. those are the things you may not want to microwave. you don't want to put it in the dishwasher because it gets so hot. a couple of things, the plastic containers once their scratched they're at a higher risk of leaking out the chemical. a lot of consumer friendly and viewer notable things to come out of the study. it doesn't mean you should stop microwaving your tubber ware.

"beyond to kill a knocking bird" i talked to people about the upcoming release of her new-old book. >> in 1949 harper lee, known as nell by her friends, left her sleeping hometown in alabama and

at the age of 23 headed to manhattan to pursue her dream of writing. after three years supporting herself with various jobs like working as a ticket agent at eastern airlines, she finished her first manuscript a novel called "go set a watchman" her editor was more interested in the character of jean louise as a 6-year-old girl and encouraged harper to tell the story from that point of view. to kill a mockingbird was born a book and later a movie that captured the publics' imagination for more than 50 years. >> it would be like killing a mockingbird. >> there were flash backs that were a younger version of scout. >> that's right. there are three sections which are set during the early life of scout who is called jean louise. >> when the manuscript was

discovered, which was essentially harper lee's long lost first book not everyone was enthusiastic. some worry the author now 89 and in an assisted living facility was somehow being taken advantage of. >> as far as her ability to effectively give her consent, i have my serious doubts. >> all i know is members of the family felt this is probably not a good idea and when they said are you sure you want to do this five times in two days she said of course. yes. >> the story takes place in the mid '50s nearly two decades after the trial of tom robinson in mockingbird. as the civil rights movement is beginning to erupt in the segregated south. >> does it feel raw, unedited unpolished if you will? >> no. it feels like a novel that has

been completed and may perhaps -- it could have been revised but as it stands it's very much a complete work of art. >> it's not lost on anyone involved in the publication of this book that it's being released in the middle of a tumultuous and explosive time for race relations in this country. >> there will be an extraordinarily complicated reaction to the book. i think people will have strong feelings about it. it actually has real topicality in the treatment of race. i think it will incite an incredible conversation and discussion and argument. >> reese widththerspoon a southerner said she was thrilled to read harper lee's prose in the audio version but was taken aback by the words and themes in watchman. >> it shocked me as being a modern woman 2015 reading some of the words. i think i had to keep, you know

out. >> not to mention the tweet from the hacking organization, if you call them that, involuntary manslaughter -- anonymous. something curious will happen to the stock exchange the night before it happened. and this happened. >> they haven't linked them but they all happened at the same time. >> department of homeland security said there's nothing going on here that appears to be related but at the same time -- the back of my mind is would they tell us if something were happening? as it was going into the trading day yesterday, people were so concerned about what was going on in china and greece to begin with. so the market was already down like over 250 points at the time then when this happened everybody was at this point it's a free for all. >> we don't know anything about this irs hacking thing and the federal employees. we know -- i still think a limited amount of information how many millions the union representing the federal workers

reheating food in the microwave and throwing the container in the dishwasher is a way of life for so many. new research in "hypertension" is raising concerns about heating plastic. dr. natalie aczar is here. which plastics are we talking about and what is the concern? >> here is the thing that the bpa or the chemoicals in the products is almost ubiquitous in our household. we have it in some of the plastics that are you know, contained around food. we have it in medical products and medication and consumer products. it's not like you can avoid them all together. the study was looking at the break down product of the chemicals and trying to correlate with a higher in

increased blood pressure in young people. it was an extrapolation. be. >> what did they find as a result of the study in the blood levels of the kids? >> it was in urinaryyour urinary. this is an on vaguebservationalobservational. we are concerned about the things the chemicals we talk about this a number of times there are chemicals in our environment that potentially could affect our hormones and ultimately increase our risk for card vascular disease down the line. i think it's important shed light on this. it's something that the fda is concerned about and we as consumers are concerned about. >> there are some plastics to

avoid. >> exactly. here is where the important take home message is to read the label. if your container says microwave safe. it is. the containers that don't have that on the label or more importantly have the recycling numbers 3, 6, and 7 that indicates they were manufactured with these chemicals and therefore heating them in the microwave or putting them in the dishwasher or getting them scratched all increase the risk these chemicals can leech out into your food. >> no direct cause and effect out of the study. it was a good reminder for me, too. is the stuff i'm putting in the microwave safe for my kids. transfer into glass and put it in the microwave. read your labels. it should be the best guidance. >> i've done that but the dishwasher part i didn't know. i've been washing the plastics in the dishwasher. between scratching and the heat over time can wear wear that

for our classic triple dipper. chili's. fresh is happening now. i'm ... our breaking news: big problems for bart commuter good morning. it's 9:26 on your thursday. i'm sam brock. our breaking news there was a major snag in the commute this morning for b.a.r.t. riders in the east bay, but service has now resumed within the last half hour. b.a.r.t. resumed service at four different stations that were all closed during the entire morning commute essentially from 5:00 to 9:00. those stations effected run from lake mer ret all the way down to the san le andros. smoke was reported on a train on the richmond-fremont line. b.a.r.t. says it was some kind of electric problem and crews had to fix a damaged third rail. but that problem has now been addressed. when it happened early this morning, the mishap sent a few passengers to the hospital. you can see them sitting upright in their gurneys.

you'll help us out with ideas women can use. >> absolutely. so obviously the question many women want to know what do you do if you're in a situation and you're confronted violently. do you run or do you stand? what do you do? >> okay. so let's do one thing. let's talk about just strikes. okay. i'm going to make it simple because what happens is sometimes when you see self-defense people show you techniques they're very complicated. when you're being attacked you're not going to have time to think about it. today i'm out of my gear and i wore heels because i want to show you moves. if you're attacked you won't be in the sneakers typically. let's look at willie for a moment. if you have access to the attacker's lower body. this is a great place to strike the top of the foot the top of the shin, and ladies this is what you use. the heel you take the back of the heel and drive it through. the skin here is thin and sensitive. you can cause some serious

damage. if you have access to the midsection the groin area. we know the move the knee coming in and using that or whatever reason you find yourself on the knees and your attacker is over you move your arm. that's a sledge hammer. i won't do it willie. and then the upper body let's say you have access here. the one place everybody should remember is the throat. we have a lot of nerves that run down this area. obviously it's where we breathe. if you take somebody's breath out of this, it's a few second and it sometimes messes with the computer up there. you want to strike. i don't care how do you it just do it. if you're going to do it be fierce. punch, chop, strike whatever you need. when you do it the whole point is to run away. you need to size up your opponent. you are fantastic at it but you understand i may not be able to fight fairly with somebody.
