bay bridge toll plaza. we don't see it over the camera but i will check from the reverse angle coming up. a very good morning to you and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we start right now with breaking news. crews have put out a large pallet fire burns in the east bay. those flames shot high into the sky early this morning. >> "today in the bay" bob redell live in pittsburg. this fire spread quickly. >> reporter: which is not unusual of pallet fires. you had 1,000 pallets here at this pallet-making yard on harbor and industrial here in pittsburg. you can imagine you have a lot of wood and air pockets in there. as you can see this fire is out now, it's been that way for an hour now. the contra costa fire department got the call around 3:00. they had to immediately go on

the defensive. that's a power line that was town, it had the pens surrounding this pallet yard energi energized. they had to spray water from ladder hoses above. that's the defensive measure i was talking about until pg&e was able to get that power turned off. the contra costa fire department ended up calling for a second is alarm and had this fire out in about an hour. as far as the cause we asked the battalion chief on scene if there was anything suspicious he said yes in the sense that this this fire department in the middle of the night and there's no one around, that always makes it somewhat suspicion but he also said with pallet fires they have a lot of sawdust here and they say it is not unusual for this town leaders to be a fire within a sawdust bin that can burn or simmer for 10 to 11 hours. that could be back yesterday within people were here. maybe this fire was simmering and for whatever reason it unleashed itself overnight. again, there is no cause as of yet, they are not saying it's suspicion, but this is just is

something that the battalion chief was bringing up as possible causes of what started this fire that you can see burned many pallets here in pittsburg. the fire is out now, fortunately no one was hurt. reporting live here bob redell, "today in the bay." more breaking news, this time in the south bay. a police investigation is underway at this hour in the parking lot of the fontaine inn, that's near tully road in san jose. right along highway 101 as you're heading northbound. you can actually see the flashing lights from the highway. but the police activity so is far not -- not said to be impacting traffic on 101. we do have a crew on the scene talking to police right now trying to figure out what is going on. we will bring you more information when it becomes available. new this morning, police investigating an overnight shooting back now in the east bay. this happened just before 10:00 last night at a business on sycamore drive near l street in antioch. that's right by the contra costa fairgrounds. there police discovered a

20-year-old man who had been shot several times. he was taken to the hospital in critical condition but doctors do believe he will survive. it appears the man was shot somewhere else and ran to a business for help. no word on any arrests. we do have new details about a deadly crash in san ramone. investigators are still not releasing the identity of the woman who was pit hit by a pickup truck but say she was 84 years old. both witnesses and police ride to give the woman cpr at the scene but she was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived. it happened just before 9:00 last night at daugherty and red willow road. roads in the area were shut down but reopened at 2:00 this morning. it's unclear what led to the crash but we to know the driver is cooperating. former president george hw bush recovering this morning after taking a frightening fall. the 91-year-old former president broke a bone in his neck after falling at his is summer house in maine. doctors say he is in stable

condition this morning. mr. bush has a form of parkinson's disease which forces him to use a motorized scooter or wheelchair to get around. happening today, bush's son, jeb bush, will be in the bay area visiting the company thumbtack hoping to raise money for his presidential campaign. >> not his first time here and won't be his last. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joining us live in san francisco with what the presidential hopeful's visit is going to bring and he is going to a local business. >> reporter: this is his third visit toit bay area in year to this democratic strong hold. highlighting basically a message of benefits of small business and entrepreneurship. you may remember it was back in january his first time and back in march and now this visit. this morning he is set to visit the startup thumbtack launched in 2009 that connects people with local professional services online from dog walkers to photographers. the startup was founded by two former aids in president george w. bush's administration.

thumbtack says this visit is not an endorsement of the former florida governor's bid. so far bush has the most outside support with super pacs reportedly rising $114 million for had his campaign. that is more than any other candidate in that packed republican field. he is trying to gain momentum after donald trump recently emerged as the fwop front runner. trump was under the national spotlight and heat after his comments on illegal immigration. there's a little more bad news for jeb bush. a new "associated press" poll that reveals bush is dealing with growing negative views, in fact, 44% say they have an unfavorable view of the former florida governor. that is up from 36% from just in april. he is after this visit to thumbtack supposed to go to a fundraiser luncheon in silicon valley. live in our san francisco newsroom, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." jeb bush is one of a handful of gone candidates who came out in support of uber in recent

weeks. in fact, bush plans to -- uber to this morning's event. the popular ride sharing company might not be around much longer. a judge ruled uber should be fined $7 million and stop operating in the state. uber refused to provide data that legalizes ride sharing firms. it would include if uber was developing out rides to all passengers. it has 30 days to appeal or its license will be suspended. a new poll finds fewer people have a favorable view of hillary clinton but many of the republican counterparts aren't favoring any better. according to the "associated press" poll only 39% of possible voters view clinton favor three, almost half say they disagree. 40% say clinton is compassionate. the percentage calling her inspiring, a mere 37%. now, when it comes to republicans nearly all of the candidates if the field are also

viewed nor negatively than positively, some by very large margins. a three year battle between city leaders and public safety union in san jose is over. last night both sides agreed to a deal to end legal wrangling over measure b, that's the pension reform bill voters approved in 2012. details are minimal, but we do know the deal covers retirement benefits for police and firefighters could jump start settlements with other unions. union leaders threatened to walk out of negotiations if they could not reach an agreement by midnight. >> for all of us this is this is a moment to exhale. it is a moment to celebrate our collective commitment, to move kond the contentiousness of the past, forge a new pat for san jose's rebirth. >> police and fire rank in file are expected to ratify the teal in the coming days. a little money making all of the difference for san jose's libraries which today celebrate their own come back story. an almaden library this morning

mayor sam liccardo is going to help mark expanded hours across the city. four years ago at this time library service was slashed to four days a week because of budget cuts. in march thanks to new money from a voter-approved measure the mayor's office allowed all city libraries to be open every day but you sunday. there has been two fires in three days in the exact same spot on the bay bridge. now, caltrans says it knows the cause, flares left by construction crews, but not everyone is buying t the most recent fire broke out yesterday afternoon from the joint that connects the treasure island portion to the new suspension span. it's the same place a fire happened on monday. initially caltrans suspected a discarded cigarette as the cause but now they say construction crews may be to blame. bay bridge drivers have mixed reaction to that explanation. >> i believe whatever they say. i wasn't there. >> that sounds a little crazy to me, but i'm not sure to be

honest. i don't know what -- i don't know what to think. >> investigation into the fires is still ongoing. caltrans says the fires did no structural damage to the bridge. after an 18 hour long closure cars finally moving on highway 84 in livermore. it reopened last night. that major road in the tri-valley shut down since 4:45 yesterday morning following a deadly crash involving three cars and that overturned big rig between vin with regard safe. the big rig ended up on its side and in an embankment. a driver in one of the cars died. a special day on tap at levi stadium to help celebrate the world's largest special olympics event. current and former 49ers will join santa clara police officers. it comes ahead of the world games being held in los angeles. that's where some 6500 athletes from 165 nations will take part. we are moving the torch

7% increase in in heart attacks. there were also more heart related visits on days with the poorest air quality. kari joins us with a look at our forecast for today. >> it is going to be a scorcher of the day, especially in the inland valleys. that's where we see the temperatures will be the most dramatic today. then to the weekend it looks a little bit better but still pretty warm outside. this is what you need to know. we are tracking the mist restart to the day with some clouds and once again the heat peaks the day and hurricane dolores may have an impact on your weather as we head toward the weekend. heading out the door it is 62 degrees in the east bay, san francisco 60 degrees and the south bay at 59 degrees. we're also seeing some upper 50s in parts of the east bay and alameda at 63 degrees. 57 degree in the north bay. all of the microclimates today, palo alto reaching 90 degrees,

los gatos 94 degrees and the marina is cool 68 degrees, napa 91, oakland up to 80 degrees, pleasanton today topping out at 95 degrees. high pressure is keeping us warm, it's going to fight back that sea breeze, especially anywhere further inland and that's where temperatures will be making it into the 90s today. we will have 70s and 80s for the north and south bay and along the coast in the 70s, more of the same tomorrow, but the heat won't be as intense. this weekend we will continue to keep an eye on this very powerful category 3 hurricane dolores with wind speeds at 115 miles an hour. the good news is that this will not make a direct land fall, but it may bring some clouds into the bay area by the end of the weekend and a slight chance of some showers, too. a quick look at the weekend forecast, it will still be nice and warm, feeling very summerlike all across the bay. the tri-valley has a build, but nothing dramatic. there's 580. good news, highway 84 has been

off. more on that coming up in the microclimate forecast. over here this is the berkeley curve already jammed, so is the maze. we will show you what's going on, the approach to the bay bridge that's causing all of this early backup. >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." thank you for joining us, i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we begin with breaking news. a large fire now out at a pallet factory in the east bay. as you can see crews battled pretty high flames. >> "today in the bay" bob redell joins us live from pittsburg. one thing made it tricky for crews battling that fire. >> reporter: a downed power line, fortunately pg&e was able to get that deenergized in time for the fire department to be able to put this out. this fire has been out for an hour and a half. right now you can see a firefighter with the contra costa fire department spraying down a lot of these wooden pallets just to make sure if

there's any heat in there they can get it to stay cool and this doesn't flare back up. they also have the is city with their back hoe trying to sped out the wood that caught fire so you can let the heat dissipate. this fire started around 3:00 this morning. there was about 1,000 pallets in this quarter acre lot here, had this is a lot where they build and make pallets, one thing that the fire department said about pallet fires, you obviously have got wood but you've also got wood that has a lot of air pockets in there, that's one reason why this fire burned so fast and burned so big. had they did get it out just a little bit before 4:00 this morning. we asked the battalion chief with the contra costa fire department if there was anything sus approximate spishs about what happened here overnight. >> it's hard to say. there are -- there are some accidental causes, you could get a fire in a sawdust bin that can burn for quite a while before it's even detected and that can be on the magnitude of 10 or 11

hours. so that's a possibility. it is middle of the night, it makes you wonder. >> reporter: if you can see that downed power line, as you can imagine when they first arrived, the firefighters, that line was touching that chain linked fence, that fence was energy jazzed. they saw some arcing and flashing. for 20 minutes at the beginning of this fire they use aed a hose ladder to shoot down on the fire so as to not get any firefighters in any danger. it took 20 minutes for pg&e to come out and shut off the power. the fire is completely out. reporting live here in pittsburg, bob redell, "today in the bay." here is an update to more breaking news. this time out of the south bay. police investigating a deadly shooting in san jose. about 2:30 this morning a man who had been shot drove up to the social security office on fontaine road, that's near tully

and 101. the man was taken to the hospital where he died. officers now going door to door in nearby hotels to see if there were any witnesses. police say the shooter is on the run this morning. also new right now, two suspects in police custody following an hours' long police chase that spanned two different county. last night officers tried to stop a vehicle on highway 238 near mission boulevard and castro valley. the driver got on it to 680 and stopped almost an hour later near the walnut creek bart station. police arrested one suspect at the scene. helicopters and k-9 units helped them catch a second suspect around 11:30 last night. jeb bush will be in the bay area visiting the company thumbtack and hoping to raise money for his presidential campaign. it comes as his father is in the hospital after a bad fall. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joining us live from san francisco in our newsroom with much more on what his detail is

the early backup, the big backup, this is the berkeley curve coming off of interstate 80 westbound and also off of the maze westbound 580. there is a crash that is just about clear but not yet. now, the toll plaza itself is just past that crash, that crash is back here beyond the 880 overcrossing. folks coming off of 880 still have a nice clear drive approaching the toll plaza. back to your maps, same thing on the maps, there is the slow down off of 580, in that backup around emeryville there may be a fender-bender over to the shoulder as well. the rest of the bay moves smoothly. not a million, not even a billion. donald trump says he's worth $10 billion today we could learn nor details about the presidential candidate's finances. plus greece says yes to its own bailout but that could lead to chaos in the country. >> greeks could kick their own government out. we will take a look at that and the disappointing amazon prime

what a lot of people so what do you think, is donald trump really worth $10 billion? that's what a lot of people are questioning this morning. that's the amount trump declared in filings to the federal elections coission. now reporters are trying to get their hands on om of the paperwork to prove it. >> fact checking donald trump. appearances on the apprentice, but in terms of that $10 billion net worth, not a lot of information in the sec filings that we've seen about his assets, his real estate, his branding, the suits that he sells in his name and his debt which could obviously offset those assets. you ask the people at forbes, they think he's probably worth about $4 billion, not $10 billion, which is till obviously a lot of money, richest guy to ever run for presidency. one of our consultants was saying this morning. we're waiting to get the full paperwork from the sec. donald trump who has been out there talking about his wealth and filed the paperwork that a lot of people thought he would not. interestingly, his campaign says the problem was the form, that the forms are just not set up with the check boxes and everything they have, they're not set up to verify the wealth of someone as rich as donald trump. >> just too many papers. thank you.

tracie. now to an investigative unit exclusive. an emergency plan for drought relief is at the center of a controversy inside the santa clara water district. the board approved a contract earlier this year without competitive bids. insiders reached out to nbc bay area investigative unit seeking accountability for what they call a lack of transparency. concerns that have been echoed by two board members who both voted against the emergency water project. >> $10 million is a lot of the public's money and to award it to contractors without any outside scrutiny, i think is troubling and that concerned me. >> you voted against it. why? >> i did, because i think single-source contracts, unless it's an absolute emergency like a dam collapsing tomorrow, are a bad idea. it shows lack of planning. >> help us understand why two of our board members, some of your employees, are kicking and

bay, 60 degrees in san francisco, so still nice and comfortable as you get the day started. later on today highs reaching 90 degrees in the south bay, 87 degrees in the north bay, san francisco 75 degrees while the east bay makes it up to 80 degrees. we do have some fog on the bay this morning that will take its time clearing out, especially in san francisco. we see the darker shades of gray where visibility will be its lowest. here we are at 10:00, 11:00 in the morning we do still see that hugging the coastline. into the afternoon it arts to roll back in and tonight we will have more of those low clouds, but a very light wind. we start out the day here is the wind forecast, the arrow shows the direction of the wind, more of a southwesterly wind. as we go into the evening the winds approximate i canning up to maybe 10 miles an hour and then we see the winds come hg in at 5:00, a nice breeze as our temperatures will start to fall back. we will have wind speeds at 15 to 20 miles an hour, but check

out lease wind speeds, hurricane dolores, 115 miles an hour. and this is something that may have a late weekend impact on our weather. this will weaken to a tropical storm by sunday and some of that moisture may be drawn into at least southern california. we will see if this moves into the bay area. some of the computer models bring at least a little bit more humidity and cloud cover to the bay area and there is a very slight chance that we could see some showers late sunday night into early monday morning. something we will be watching and keeping you up to tate on. this weekend it will be nice and temperatures falling back into the 70s and 80s across most of the bay, but still in the 90s in the tri-valley. let's check in with mike for traffic. them ri vil camera, great news, i saw that lanes cleared at the berkeley curve, recovery recovery over there. look at that traffic break and they're moving two vehicles over from the center divide to the

that starts to come down in time for the weekend. what about traffic? i know mike has got a lot of problems out there. we had a lot of crashes going on approaching the bay bridge, they have all cleared. this is the second one we talked about on the east shore freeway. recovery from university over to pal, still very slow. the bay bridge toll plaza saw a burst of traffic as well as the other crash on the berkeley curve cleared. look at your map, that's the biggest issue for the bay, this bend right over here, 580 recovering but 880 slower coming out of oakland. we will show you the rest of the approach moving really well, some slowly south 880 through union city. unusual for san jose as we move the map south, northbound 101 we know about the slowing north of 680, we talked about the earlier overnight activity, a police investigation continues just off the freeway right by where the chuck e. cheese is there.
