warm day, but not as hot and it was where he had. great news and we get ready to start out the weekend. 82 degrees the high today in the peninsula, south bay 88 degrees and east bay 77. while we do see those highs in the low 90s in the tri-valley, san francisco reaching 70 degrees, north bay 82 degrees. once again still hot in spots but we may be ending the weekend with, get this, some rain. i will have more on that coming up in the microclimate forecast. good morning, mike. good morning. going from the 90s to rain, let's see what's going on on the roads flts in oakland we have a slower drive northbound, just north of high street, these folks make that bend, they're going north into a construction zone. flashing light you can see that. look at your map. that's the area for slowing for the nimitz freeway where the twins and a's play tonight, meanwhile the smooth drive for the rest of the bay. we will zoom down to the south bay, no problems out here. a crash on 680 just pops up. we will tell you about that.

we do have breaking news to start with, an abandoned commercial building up in flames in antioch. this is video from the contra costa county fire department, all happening in the old town area off of west second street. crews say they were able to save neighboring buildings. right now those crews are still working to douse the claims, make sure all the hot spots are out. it's too early to know how much damage is to the building or what caused that fire. mom-and-pop shop in the south bay is closed after a car crashed into it. >> a tesla. it's what's left behind this morning. it happened around 9:00 last night in sunnyvale. the driver of that tesla ms. took the gas for the brakes, crashing into the liquor and food store on fremont avenue. the car didn't get too far into the store but it was enough to do serious damage. the store is now closed and the owners say they don't know when they are going to be able to reopen. >> i grew up with the store.

they bought the place when i was ten, i've been here all the time and to see this in in so much damage is just heart wrenching. >> no one thankfully was hurt in that crash. one person does have life-threatening injuries after a shooting in san francisco, this happened last night around 7:00 near the see czar chavez and harrison street. this was in the pigs district. police say at least one person was shot but it is not clear it if there were any other injuries. no word on any suspects. >> now to a developing story on what is being called an act of domestic trifl. four marines are dead after a lone gunman opened fire in chattanooga yesterday. this morning investigators are trying to figure out why he carried out the attack. authorities say 24-year-old mohammad abdulazeez shot at least 25 rounds on an armed forces recruiting center, then

he drove seven miles to a marine corps reserve center where he gunned down four marines. he later died in a shootout with police. investigators say he is a naturalized u.s. citizen from kuwait. president obama and city leaders are calling for the nation to come together. >> the deepest sympathies of the american people to the four marines that have been killed. >> our hearts are breaking for the families of these marines. >> though the gunman was not on any terrorist watch list, we are learning this morning he left a chilling high school yearbook entry, it said, quote, my name causes national security threat alerts. what does yours do? we are going to monitor the very latest developments on the story throughout the morning. we will have a live report from chattanooga coming up in our next half hour. happening today, san francisco sheriff's deputies are going to get special training on how to help the youngest crime victims, stephanie chuang joins us live from from our san

francisco newsroom. they are calling this the first of its kind training. >> reporter: that's right. first of its kind in san francisco. it's not just for deputies, that's the good news. this training focused on helping missing kids. now, helping the san francisco sheriff's department is the president of class kids foundation, mark class who has made a name in this field after his 12-year-old daughter was kidnapped and killed back in 1993. you may recognize him from his constant help in the sierra lamar case. this morning the sheriff's department is working with the national center for missing and exploited children to train roughly 100 injuries from across northern california on how to investigate and prosecute these cases which are quite specialized. it's been in the work since last year when sheriff mirkarimi set with the center. the center has trained more than 300,000 law enforcement across

the country. it has helped in more than 216,000 missing children cases. hopefully helping the scene here in northern california and if the bay area. that training is set to start at the federal reserve building in just a few hours this morning. live in our san francisco newsroom, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." gridlocked traffic has one south bay community fed up. it's so bad at times in los gatos the town leaders say it's becoming a public safety issue. now they're meeting with police to try to figure out a solution to this problem. >> "today in the bay" bob redell live with more on this issue. >> reporter: the city of los gatos plans not to only meet with police later today, but also with caltrans to see if they can put an end to this it. you should be looking at video of the gridlock in this small town, downtown los gatos. in spite of this town's small size it's having to deal with the bigger town traffic

problems. what the city believes is happening is whenever highway 17 gets backed up, especially with people trying to head to santa cruz, drivers filter on to city streets looking for a way to get around that backup. it was a real problem july 3rd, one woman told us it took letter 20 minutes just to go four blocks the other day. the city has concerns about fire and police trying to get to their emergencies. today in that meeting the city will ask caltrans if it may be possible to close the highway 17 on and off ramps during peak congestion. it will also inquire of the police if officers can be deployed to help direct traffic when it becomes a problem. the idea is to come up with a plan and have it implemented by labor day. reporting live in los gatos, as you can see right behind me plenty of room on the streets but we know that will change once the sun comes up, bob redell, "today in the bay." we are in the middle of summer, lots of people are going to try to get down to the beach this weekend and hopefully 17

doesn't get too clogged up. let's check in with had meteorologist kari hall. >> especially on sunday if you're thinking of laying out on the beach with the sunshine, we may not have so much sun. as we start out the day in san jose we start to see those low clouds moving in, 61 degrees in the south bay, 62 in the east bay. as we take a closer look at the peninsula it is in the upper 50s to lower 60s. redwood city right now 64 degrees. today the twins versus the a's, first pitch in if oakland it will be 69 degrees and then a few clouds dropping back to 65 degrees at the end of the game. taking a look at all of the microclimates san jose reaching 86 degrees, redwood city 82 degrees, low 70s in the san francisco, while the east bay sees those highs in the upper 80s at walnut creek, across most of the tri-valley a lot of sunshine today. still warm in many shots spots. i will talk more about that possibility of rain toward the end of the weekend.

we're looking north of high street where things are bunching up on the it nimitz freeway. overnight road crew north of here, they are in the process of clearing and this is likely what causes this traffic break and movement. that's a slow drive at the coliseum north of high street. looking at the map you see that short segment there, no other problems for the bay as far as speeds go, but there is an issue north 680 at stone valley road, reports of some sort of debris in the roadway, sounds like it came off a car because chp makes the comment no associated vehicle in the area. we will watch them pull whatever that is out of the slow lane. in some places they are crashing cars on purpose. nearly three dozen people arrested across the bay area. how an alert officer eventually caught them. and a potentially history making court case underway right now in the bay area. divorcing couple fighting over the future of embryos.

==laura/ots== a closely t a very good friday morning. you made it. here is a live look outside from the south bay. we will have a look at that forecast for the weekend. closely watched court case in san francisco is expected to conclude today and it could shake the foundation of embryo preservation. mimi lee is suing to keep the embryos that she and her ex-husband agreed to destroy if they divorced. she told the judge this is her only chance at having a baby, biological child, since she's 46 years old and she never believed she was bound by an agreement the couple signed at the fertility center back in 2010. lee and herest strained husband froze five embryos when she was diagnosed with cancer. here is the pitch, sign up for a chance to spend two weeks in prison. that's what one group of san francisco students did four decades ago and now there's a movie about it. the film is called the stanford prison experiment, it opens today in limited release. the movie stars billy cudop.

it tells the story of two dozen students who volunteered for a study in a fake prison. didn't take things long to head south. the study received national attention. early reviews of the film seem to be promising. it's notching some of the highest scores on rotten tomatoes website. an elsa read dough man accused of running a scam. he runs the natural oncology institute in richmond. investigators say louisiana month he treated a ventura county woman in the late stages of cancer by giving her empty capsules of medications. for that she paid $2,000. amil is expected in a courtroom next month. more than two dozen people in the south bay are accused of crashing cars on purpose and pocketing the insurance money. sthth prosecutors say those accidents happened all over the bay area mostly on quiet streets or parking lots. in each case the driver claimed

that they crashed because they were distracted by a tone or spilling some coffee. most of the 33 suspects are from san jose. an alert chp officer cracked the case when he noticed an unusual number of people were claiming they crashed when they spilled their coffee or were distracted while driving. the scam resulted in payouts of a half million dollars. tesla is going to announce something big today. tech church is reporting the company is keeping hush about the details. we don't know what that announcement will be sh we will know later this morning. tails will be revealed about 11:00. we will keep you posted online and on air. ebay and paypal officially become separate companies today. today paypal is worth an estimated $43 billion. an lists tell the mercury news the split will allow paypal to grow more quickly and better compete with apple pay.

refreshing to see his openness on social issues, his focus on poverty. these are really critical times for us, certainly as citizens of the world. >> this conference comes on the heels of pope francis' manifesto in global warming calling it a moral issue. this week the cal state senate approved a resolution supporting the pontiff's view of climate change. governor brown is also heading to the vet can as well. governor brown will bring a copy of that resolution. cleanup efforts underway this morning in western illinois after this massive tornado which happened through the region. the sheriff's office says there are reports of severe damage in the area. residents are not being allowed in that area as they try to survey the damage. debris can be seen swirling in the video. no word yet on any injuries. >> we have seen a lot of that sort of activity in the midwest this year. much calmer here back at home. we prefer it that day.

let's get a look at your forecast with meteorologist kari hall. >> we could use some rain, though, and there is a possibility of that as we head toward the weekend. this is what i'm watching in the forecast, we start out with low clouds this this morning and it will still be a warm day, but not as hot as yesterday. by the end of the weekend we could be tracking some rain, possibly some storms moving into the bay area. we start out this morning at 60 degrees in if san francisco, oakland 63 degrees, livermore 62 and 59 in santa rosa. highs today 82 degrees in redwood city, ocean beach 64 degrees, that happen pa 82 degrees, walnut creek 88 degrees and still some low 90s in the tri-valley but not as widespread as yesterday. if you're getting away for the weekend, southern california looking at some rain moving in and it's all because of the remnants of hurricane dolores that continues to weaken. we are tracking this storm as it continues to fizzle out, but still a lot of moisture associated with that and this

high pressure kind of moving off towards the north and east having less of an influence and may help steer some of that moisture into the bay area. when i say moisture i'm talking about clouds, higher humidity and the possibility of some rain and storms. this is what computer models do with that, by saturday we're still enjoying a nice sunny da i across the bay. into sunday we start to see more clouds moving in and some green here shows some rain popping up for the south bay that could continue to spread into the north bay by early monday morning. you will want to keep checking in to see if anything changes in that forecast. otherwise saturday the best day to get outside, no worries about rain or a storm. thank you, kari. happening today, the last of the beaches closed while crews cleaned up an enormous oil spill near santa barbara. now it is set to reopen. the beach is nearly clean for the first time since that may 19th spill. as of last month cleanup costs climbed to 92 million buck, but

antioch. this is video from the contra costa county fire department. the fire was so big at one point crews had to call for backup. right now they've stopped the flames from spreading but the remnants of the building are still burning. we're told part of the roof even collapsed. the cause of that fire is under investigation. new this morning, a little crash caused a lot of damage at a mom and pop store in sunnyv e sunnyvale. last night around 9:00 the driver of this tesla mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brakes and crashed into the liquor and food store on fremont avenue. the car did not get too far into the store but it was far enough to do serious structural damage to the building. the for is closed now and the owners say they don't know when they will be able to reopen. >> i grew up with the store. they bought the place when i was ten. i've been here around all the time and to see this
