building burned overnight in antioch. this is video from the contra costa county fire department. the fire was so big at one point crews had to call for backup. right now they've stopped the flames from spreading but the remnants of the building are still burning. we're told part of the roof even collapsed. the cause of that fire is under investigation. new this morning, a little crash caused a lot of damage at a mom and pop store in sunnyv e sunnyvale. last night around 9:00 the driver of this tesla mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brakes and crashed into the liquor and food store on fremont avenue. the car did not get too far into the store but it was far enough to do serious structural damage to the building. the for is closed now and the owners say they don't know when they will be able to reopen. >> i grew up with the store. they bought the place when i was ten. i've been here around all the time and to see this insomuch

damage is devastating. >> luckily nobody was injured. one person has life-threatening injuries after a shooting in san francisco. it happened last night around 7:00 near caesar chavez and harrison streets in the mission district. at least one person was shot but it's not clear if any others were hurt. happening today it is a first of its kind, training right here in the bay area focused on how to help the youngest crime victims. >> stephanie chuang live in our newsroom with what the san francisco sheriff's department is doing. >> reporter: that's right. the sheriff ross mirkarimi saying this is the first time this kind of training has been offered here, especially at this scale, helping the most vulnerable, children. one key face you may recognize who is helping in the training this morning is this this man, mark class, who was a constant in the search for sierra lamar, for instance, class has specialized in tracking missing

children since the '90s after his own 12-year-old daughter was kid that happened and killed. the national center for missing and exploited children is leading this morning's training in san francisco of about 100 officers from across northern california on how to investigate and prosecute these cases according to the center which has trained more than 310,000 people in the u.s., including law enforcement officers. there were about 467,000 reports of missing kids to the fbi last year alone. the center also says the first three hours are the most critical when trying to find a missing child. to date the center has helped in the recovery of more than 208,000 missing children sin it was founded in '84. today's training is also focused on how to protect kids online and how to help exploited children, for instance, victims of child pornography. there's actually a troubling trend when it comes to this issue that's making this more pressing. we will have more on that coming up this our next report in 30 minutes. live in our san francisco

newsroom, stephanie chuang. authorities calling it one of the largest busts of its kind in county history, o possibly in the state. officers uncovered a massive butane honey oil hash lab in this home in pittsburg. five people now behind bars facing charges related to what police say is a growing trend. honey oil hash labs are being used to extract the by-product of marijuana known as th krchl. police say the process can have explosive consequences and neighbors say ter concerned. >> i went up to say and we're safe here and they say, well, this house was about to blow up. >> the home is located off of promenade dry. an el cerrito man accused of running a scam, even prescribing dirt to a patient. vincent ambil. police say he treated a ventura

county woman in the late stages of cancer by giving her empty capsules of medications. for that she paid $2,000. amil is expected in a ventura county courtroom next month. a construction company owner and a project manager are going to be sentenced later today for the death of a worker in milpitas. a jury has convicted the two hen of involuntary manslaughter for the death of raul zapata. he died when a wall david in back in 2012. the construction company owner and project manager now face a maximum of four years in prison. jurors convicted james holmes in the colorado theater massacre, now they will decide if he should be put to death. nearly three years ago wearing body armor holmes slipped through an emergency exit during a screening of the dark knight rises and opened fire. he kipd 12 people, injured 70. jurors rejected arguments that holmes was insane and driven to

murder by delusions. the trial will enter the sentencing phase next week. we move to a developing story, we are learning more information about the gunman who killed four marines in a shooting rampage in tennessee. >> the attack itself is being called an act of domestic terrorism. nbc's dave wagner is in chattanooga. he joins us with the very latest. dave. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is still a very active crime scene here. this is one of two crime scenes, the one behind me here is where those four marines were killed. a sad morning in chattanooga as four families and really the entire community here grieves. it was 30 minutes at two military centers, the question investigators are trying to figure out, was it an act of terrorism is this the 24-year-old gunman mohammad youssuf abdulazeez lived with his parents, dad, in fact, a city loi here in chattanooga. the gunman was not on a terrorist watch list, but we are

told by the feds that they are working to confirm whether that blog maintained by the gunman may reveal some clues. one post, one blog post three days before these shootings said, life is short and bitter. muslims should not let the opportunity to submit to allah pass you by. so they are working to determine whether or not that might give them some indication, the motive behind these shootings. also we are getting the name of one of the victims here, this is the first name we've received, one of the marines killed, thomas sullivan, originally from springfield, massachusetts. he survived two tours in iraq, but he tied yesterday here in chattanooga. >> we will continue to follow that story. police right now are on the look brought for a hit and run driver that struck two demonstrators during a uc development protest last might. the oakland tribune reporting it happened near the intersection of marin and san pablo avenues

in albany. the protesters reportedly each had their foot run over as they were blocking rush hour traffic. witnesses say the driver then sped away through the crowd. neither victim was seriously injured. that dej strags was staged against the new development going up which is owned by the university of california. south bay town is looking for ways to combat big city traffic entering their streets. >> definitely muddied up the roads for many drivers in that area. bob redell joins us with details on how city leaders are planning on addressing this problem later today. >> reporter: and the problem isn't what the people in the town of los gatos, the people who live here, but the drivers who are using highway 17, using los gatos to get away around the backu backup. >> it's terrible. >> you just reach that critical mass. >> reporter: and a couple people here in los gatos, a couple

people here in los gatos expressing their frustration over the gridlock that has come to envelope the small town during parts of the day. it has been a problem on the main drag as what the city believes is happening whenever highway 17 gets backed up, especially with people trying to get to santa cruz people filter on to the city streets looking for an alternate route. one woman told us it took her 20 minutes to go four block the other day. the city has concerns about fire and police trying to get to emergencies. that's why the city plans to meet not only with police later today but also with cal rans to see if they can put an end to this. they will ask caltrans if it would be possible to close highway 17 on and off ramps during the peak congestion and ask police if they can deploy officers to help are direct traffic. the idea is to come up with a plan and have it implemented by labor day. reporting live here in los gatos, bob redell, "today in the

the markets look to close out the week on a positive note. stocks rose on thursday as fears about greece's debt crisis eased and fed chair spoke to a senate panel says she prefers to a gradual increase in interest rates. the nasdaq hitting a record high and is on pace for its best week since last october. look for data on consumer prices, housing and consumer sent m. the dow rising 17 points, the nasdaq up 64 to 5163. watch shares of google today, the tech giant shooting to an all time high in after hours trading on thursday following earnings that easily beat wall street forecasts that was due to higher on line ad revenue and more people clicking on paid ads. google is the world's second most valuable company behind only apple. hulu is considering a service for its streaming service. currently users have to sit through ads and shows and movies even if they pay for hulu's

premium service which costs $7.99 a month. netflix don't have ads in their content. the ad free option could launch this fall and cost $12 to $14 a month. watch your eyes on the road, at&t are issuing virtual reality in the fight against distracted driving. kicking off a 100 city tour to let people stimulate what happens when they take their eyes off the road to answer a phone call or text. it's all part of at&t's it can wait campaign. the state legislature is reviving several anti-tobacco bills in a special session next month. among them a bill regulating e-cigarettes. that bill would make it a misdemeanor to provide e-cigarettes to minors. another bill looks to increase the smoking age in california from 18 to 21. >> as smoking rates drop a new

study shows light smoking is increasing if this young women. researchers analyzed data from 10,000 women ages 18 to 25 years old. about a fifth of all the women smoked fewer than five cigarettes a day, nearly half of those who smoked did not do it every day. experts say there needs to be better smoking prevention efforts. toddlers who watch too much tv have more trouble if i get in at school. a did you study looked at the viewing habits of 2,000 children, those who watch tv for an hour have a greater chance of being bullied by middle school. do you spoil your grandchildren? if so new research suggests you could be harming their health without knowing it. that's because grandparents tend to show affection by indulging, overfeeding and sparing them are from physical chores. the study found those under the care of grandparents are more than twice as likely to be overweight.

what a cookie? >> they will always tell you you are the cutest whether it's true or not. happening today the last of the beaches closed while crews cleaned up an enormous oil spill near santa barbara is now set to reopen. the beach is nearly clean for the first time since the may 19th spill. as of last month cleanup costs climbed all the way up to $92 million but yesterday crews said the cleanup was 98% complete. there are several investigations into what caused that pipeline to break. our beaches looking good for the weekend, kari? >> at least for the first part of the weekend. the end of the weekend we will start to see unsettled a weather moving into the bay area. we start out with warm temperatures today. let's see what it looks like out there. temperatures are in the lower 60s, as the sunrises we're starting to see a few of those clouds in some spots, low clouds, as well as some coastal fog. come over and check out that seven-day forecast, it's coming up on the bottom of the screen. you can see what the weather

will be like as we go into the next several days. today's forecast brings it up to 88 degrees in the south bay, 82 degrees in the north bay and 77 degrees in the east bay. we're also tracking hurricane dolores, now wind speeds at 80 miles an hour, so it is just a category 1, it continues to weaken and this may have an impact on the bay area so we've been keeping a close eye on this all week long. it will be weakening to a remnant low on monday, but will be very close to the southern california coast. this is what computer models to with that moisture. it screams it into southern california and here we are in the bay area, we do see some green very close by, which shows the rain, increased humidity. more clouds on sunday and the possibility of some rain late sunday night into early monday. heading into southern california on saturday keep in mind that there will be a chance of some showers and thunderstorms there and we are seeing the slight chance of that also in the bay area. i think we will have a better chance of rain, maybe sunday

francisco. you can see some pieces of at&t park in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen. is 10 million bucks too much? lawyers for suge knight are going to be in court to try to get the music mogul's bail reduced. knight is charged with murder but his lawyers say the $10 million bail is excessive. a prosecutor responds that it's appropriate given knight's criminal history and failure to appear for court hearings in other cases. knight has been in jail since january when he reportedly ran over two men, killing one of them. he has pleaded not guilty. a fun summer activity quickly turned ugly in southern california. two girls were running a lemonade stand in rancho kuk mund da this week, business was to go great until an 18-year-old man ran up and stole their hard earned cash. >> he said that he dropped had his dollar on his -- so we gave him a free glass. when he came back running, we thought he was running back home from the way he came but then he

it's not clear if any other people were injured and no suspects. law enforcement officers from across the bay area will get special training on how to help the youngest crime victims. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joining us from our san francisco newsroom. we're talking about specialized cases, missing children and child exploitation. >> reporter: that's right. this is hosted by the san francisco sheriff's department. the sheriff ross mirkarimi says as a father himself he understands the top priority of the safety of kids, of children. another man who echos that is mark class who is a constant -- who was a constant in the search for sierra lamar. class has specialized in in tracking missing children since the '90s after his own daughter was kid that happened and killed. he is helping in this morning's training exercise of about 100 northern california law enforcement officers. the national center for missing and exploited children is leading the session, focused mainly on how to investigate and prosecute these cases. according to the center had this information is very critical

because time is of thes essence in these investigations. print pointing the first three that's because the murder of a kidnapped child is rare but when it happens 2006 study showed more than 76% were killed in those first three hours. the training is also focused on how to protect kids from becoming the victims of pornography. u.s. attorneys handle about 83% more child porn cases in 2006 than they did in 1994. this is due to more cases and also likely more awareness and resources centered on this issue. this morning's training also shows -- highlights there are more attention to this locally as well. the training begins if this just a couple of hours at 8:00 this morning. live in our san francisco newsroom, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." it is 5:32. a solano county sludge will consider whether to allow a convicted sex offender to move into a home in fairfield. he is currently housed in the state hospital no longer on

parole or probation. he petitioned the court for release and placement in a home in unincorporated fairfield. smith has three violent sexual offenses on his record. fairfield residents and the police department asked the judge to deny the placement. more trouble for san francisco share are rift ross mirkarimi. the union representing san francisco sheriff's deputies has filed a grievance against the sheriff following recent controversy about sanctuary city status. the union says back in in march mirkarimi banned deputies from telling federal immigration agents when they release suspect. the union says that the killing of kate steinle by an undocumented immigrant who had just been released from san francisco custody sho he is that mirkarimi's policy puts people in danger. the sheriff has not responded to that grievance, but yesterday mirkarimi did respond to the mayor's request to change the sanctuary city policy. mayor lee said the sheriff should have notified federal

immigration authorities when the man accused of killing steinle was released. mirkarimi replied saying there needs to be more clarity on this policy. the investigation into the deadly shooting at pier 14 soon turned into something something else, a different disturbing crime. the day after the shooting of kate steinle san francisco police divers searched the waters below the pier and found the body of a cat. the cat was attached to a ten pound weight. police found a micro chip in the cat which led them to the suspect, the cat's owner. he now faces felony an hall cruelty charges which faces possible prison time and tines up to $20,000. here is the pitch, sign up for a chance to spend two weeks in prison. that's sound interesting to you? >> not really. >> that's what one group of students did four decades now now there is a movie about it. >> the movie opens today in limited release. watching it sounds interesting to me, though.

the movie stars billy cro dc oc. the study received national attention. early reviews of the film in promising, it's notching some of the highest scores. san francisco police cracking down on bicyclists near golden gate park. the new police captain is a noud by the high number of cyclists running red lights and cruising right on through stop signs. the captain wants to increase citations for cyclists who reason following the laws of the road. the san francisco bicycle coalition says the move takes away from enforcement of more deadly traffic behaviors, specifically from drivers. more than two dozen people in the south bay are accused of crashing cars on purpose then pocketing the insurance money. santa clara prosecutors say the accidents happen all over the bay area, mostly on quiet streets or parking lots. in in each case the driver

claimed they crashed because they were distracted by a phone or spilling coffee. most of the 33 suspects are from san jose. an alert chp officer cracked that case when he noticed an unusual number of people were claiming they crashed when they spilled their coffee. the scam resulted in payouts of a half a million dollars. you do have your eyes on the road you may not the like what you see in the south bay, gridlocked traffic in one community has many people fed up. it's so bad at times this if los gatos town leaders say it is becoming a public safety issue. of they are meeting with police to try to figure out a solution to the problem. >> "today in the bay" bob redell live in los gatos with more on how they plan to address the issue. >> reporter: later today the city of los gatos will turn to police and caltrans in hopes for a solution to this. you're looking at video of gridlock in the town of los gatos, in the downtown area, and in spite of the town's small size it's having to deal with what you would see as traffic problems in bigger towns. what the city believes is

weekend. >> back end there. >> something really unusual for us this this time of year. so we will be watching that as we see a weakening hurricane color. right now as you walk out the door it's sunny, some low clouds in some spots, also temperatures in the low 60s and into the rest of the day we will are have more of this nice mild weather, still warm in spots like the tri-valley and the north bay, as well as parts of the inland south bay, but as we go into the next couple of days our temperatures come canning down and some more clouds rolling in. today's forecast we will see highs reaching 82 degrees in the peninsula, 77 in the east bay and the north bay reaching 82 degrees, while san francisco tops out at 70 degrees. the weather story, low clouds this morning, still warm today, and by the end of the weekend once again we could see some rain and storms. because of this, hurricane dolores, now wind speeds at 80 miles an hour, the storm continues to weaken fairly quickly. the models bring it farther off towards the west and to the

north, by monday it's just the remnant area of low pressure and then it gets kind of picked up by the weather systems right off the coast of california. into the next couple of days it shows that there could be more clouds moving this in, by late saturday, sunday the possibility of some rain, but the humidity going up and a lot of that rain staying across southern california. we could also see some of that moving into the bay area if not just some lightning and more clouds with higher humidity. a lot going on this weekend, like the native american festiv festival, this happening in point ray saturday from 10:00 to 4:00, temperatures will be in the low 60s. also family fun day in san leandro on sunday. it will be topping out at 72 degrees. we will take a look at the rest of the weekend forecast with all the microclimates coming up. looking over toward the san mateo bridge we are showing a smooth drive westbound. a little cloud cover in the area but not a problem as far as visibility goes.

a smooth flow of traffic on the peninsula, no build off of 92 or the dumbarton bridge, but over the east bay side we have your build now coming into hayward southbound and then slowing towards whipple road where there is a crash, four vehicles, but they are all on the shoulder. that's the only real issue here. after the earlier slow down and road work cleared from oakland, we have the bay bridge metering lights on. crash eastbound highway 4, not a big deal as you head toward 680. this backup at the toll plaza nothing really severe, either. greek leaders are promising to fully reopen banks on monday. in the meantime greeks want to get their money. residents waited in long lines in morning at atms at athens. the nearly billion dollar cash infusion is going to help, greek leaders fear that the new round of painful austerity measures is going to force new elections

within months. slices of a $90 billion pie are simply there for the taking all you have to do is know how to crack that code. that is the message from san mateo congresswoman jammy peer. she is going to had help small businesses obtain government contracts. last year she said the government spend nearly $90 billion buying products from small and medium sized businesses. it happens at the college of san mateo. a bill inspired by a second grader now heads to the governor's dress. it allows children of live in workers to attend schools where their parents live and work the majority of the week. the bill was inspired of a second grade daughter of a live in nanny who was told to leave her school district because she didn't live there. the mercury news first reported her story, both the state and state senate and assembly passed that bill unanimously. and in washington lawmakers are working to rewrite the controversial no child left behind education act.

there is already some speculation it could be new shipping dates for the long awaited model x. maybe nor news about the giga factory or it could be nothing at all and the company is doing a really good job of getting the media riled up. >> again. state legislature is reviving several anti-tobacco bills in a special session next month. a bill regulating e-cigarettes the same way tobacco products are regulated. another bill looks to increase the smoking age in california from 18 to 21. as overall smoking rates drop a new study shows very light smoking is increasing in young women. researchers analyzed data from about 10,000 people from 18 to 25 years old. about a fifth of all the women smoked fewer than five cigarettes a day, nearly half of those who smoked did not do it every day. experts say there needs to be better smoking prevention efforts directed at young women.

thank you for joining us, i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. an update to breaking news. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked this fire at an abandoned building in an i don't think. this is video from the contra costa fire department. broke out on west second street not far from the antioch amtrak station. the fire was so big at one point crews had to call for backup. they were able to stop the flames from spreading to nearby buildings. part of the roof collapsed. no one was hurt. a mom and pop liquor store in sunnyvale is closed because of this. take a look. that's a tesla in the side of the store. the driver of that car mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake and shot through the front of the liquor and food store on fremont avenue. the car didn't make it too far into the store but that was enough to do serious structural damage. the owners say they don't know when they are going to be able to reopen. >> i grew up with the store. they bought the place when i
