thank you for joining us, i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. an update to breaking news. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked this fire at an abandoned building in an i don't think. this is video from the contra costa fire department. broke out on west second street not far from the antioch amtrak station. the fire was so big at one point crews had to call for backup. they were able to stop the flames from spreading to nearby buildings. part of the roof collapsed. no one was hurt. a mom and pop liquor store in sunnyvale is closed because of this. take a look. that's a tesla in the side of the store. the driver of that car mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake and shot through the front of the liquor and food store on fremont avenue. the car didn't make it too far into the store but that was enough to do serious structural damage. the owners say they don't know when they are going to be able to reopen. >> i grew up with the store. they bought the place when i was

ten, i've been here around all the time and see this insomuch carnage and damage is just heart wrenching. >> despite appearances there luckily nobody was hurt. it's 6:01. let's take a live look the sun rising over san jose this morning. a nice day today but we could see some changes this weekend. meteorologist kari hall joins us with a look at your microclimate forecast. >> you will want to pay attention to this forecast, because it won't be the typical weather we normally see for the middle of summer. there could be some rain in the forecast by the end of the weekend. today it's still warm and we start out the day at 59 degrees in the south bay, 60 degrees in the east bay and in san francisco also at 60 degrees. highs today reaching 82 degrees in the peninsula, south bay 88 degrees, east bay 77 while the tri-valley tops out at 92 degrees. still hot in spots and the north bay 82 degrees with a lot of sunshine today. those changes coming our way,

we're talking about the possibility of some late weekend rain and storms, high humidity and also a lot more clouds as the temperatures still come down from the heat we're going to see today and a we experienced yesterday. tomorrow we will have some slightly milder air and i will talk more about that chance of late weekend rain and storms and why. it's coming up in less than ten minutes. with the summer weather comes more trips to the beach of course, but one south bay town says beach traffic is creating absolute gridlock on its neighborhood roads. now they say enough is enough. "today in the bay's" bob redell joining us in los gatos where town leaders are going to meet with police and try to figure out some kind of solution to what some call a potentially dangerous problem. >> reporter: dangerous problem, you can imagine if you're police or fire and trying to get to an emergency here in downtown los gatos obviously this could cause you some major delays and of course for people who live in this town, well, just listen to

what they have to say. >> it's terrible. >> you just reach that critical mass. >> reporter: and these are people in the small town of los gatos, rightfully complaining about the gridlock that's been showing up here more and more as people who are on highway 17, for example, trying to get to santa cruz who are getting off highway 17 because it's backed up and trying to find an alternate route in the town of los gatos and as a result they're causing the backup here. what's going to happen later today, the city will be meeting with police and caltrans to try to come up with a solution. one suggestion is asking caltrans if it would be possible to shut down the on and off ramps from highway 17 in los gatos during peak congestion and ask police if they could spare some officers to direct traffic when it gets bad here. when you want to talk about how bad it's gotten, where he had we spoke with a woman, she told us that it took her 20 minutes just to go four blocks in this little town.

first of its kind straining here focused ond how to help the youngest crime victims, stephanie chuang with what the san francisco sheriff's department is doing smr laura, sheriff ross mirkarimi says this trieng of training in miss helping missing kids has never been offered. one face you may recognize helping in this morning's training is mark class who was a constant figure in that search for sierra ma mar. class has specialized in tracking missing kids since the '90s after his own daughter was kidnapped and killed. the national center for missing and exploited children is leading the training of about 100 officers from across northern california on how to investigate and prosecute these cases. according to the center which has trained more man 310,000 people in the country, including law enforcement officers, there were about 467,000 reports of

missing kids to the fbi last year alone. according to the center this information is very critical because time is critical in these investigations. the first three hours are the most important because a murder of a kidnapped child is rare, but when it happens a 2006 study showed more than 76% of them were killed in those first three hours. today's training is also focused on how to protect kids online as well as how to keep them safe from child pornography. there is a troubling trend with that. we will have more coming up in in the last hour of this show. live in our san francisco newsroom, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." a construction company owner and a project manager are going to be sentenced today for the death of a worker in milpitas. a jury convicted the two men of involuntary manslaughter for the death of raul zapata. he died when a wall caved in at a construction site back in 2012. the construction company owner and project manager face a maximum of four years in prison. police are on the lookout for a hit and run driver that

struck two demonstrators during a uc development protest last night. the oakland tribune is reporting reporting it happened near marin avenue in albany. the protesters each had their foot run offer as they blocked rush hour traffic. witnesses say the driver sped away through the crowd. neither victim was seriously hurt. the demonstration was against a new development going up at the guild track which is owned by the university of california. a developing story, we are learning more about the gunman who killed four marines in a shooting rampage in tennessee. that attack is being called an act of domestic terrorism. nbc's dave wagner joins us from chattanooga with the latest. this man wasn't on any terrorism list. >> reporter: that's correct. he was not on any kind of terrorist watch list at all, sam. i can tell you that i am standing right now in front of this second crime scene. this is where the gunman came and opened fire, ended up

killing four marines right here. we have learned that the gunman rammed this fence behind us, that's how he got in, and then used an ak-47 style weapon according to federal law enforcement sources to gun down those four marines. it was 30 minutes of terror at these two military centers, but was it an act of terrorism? >> barricades and bow case tell part of the story. >> our hearts are breaking for the families of these marines tonight. >> reporter: today investigators are trying to determine why. >> it was loud and it was fast. >> reporter: on thursday investigators say mohammad youssuf abdulazeez opened fire with at least 25 rounds on an armed forces recruiting center. >> we actually didn't escape through our active shooter drills, we actually barricaded it in the building. >> reporter: the gunman drove seven miles to a marine corps center where he gunned down four marines. >> we are conducting this as

a -- an act of domestic terrorism. >> abdulazeez is among the dead. he was born in kuwait but lived in the area for many years. last night authorities searched the lone gunman's home, car and online activity. >> we are checking every possible place that he could reside or could have resided. >> reporter: while a motive is unclear, president obama is calling for the nation to come together. >> the deepest sympathies of the american people to the four marines that have been killed. >> reporter: a country and community feeling with gun tire and grief once again. a couple of important pieces of information right here, the feds we are told are working to confirm whether a blog maintained by the gunman may provide some clues. one post three days before these shootings said this, life is short and bitter. muslims should not let the opportunity to submit to allah pass you by.

again, federal agents looking at that, trying to determine whether or not that is a motive or an indication of a motive in these shootings. also we've gotten word of one of the victims names, a marine by the name of thomas sullivan originally from springfield, massachusetts, he served two tours in iraq, but tied right here in chattanooga, tennessee yesterday. >> dave wagner reporting from chattanooga. time to check our microclimate forecast this morning. let's take a live look outside. beautiful bay bridge. can you make out the cars making their way across? we will check in for a look at that commute but first here is kari. >> we start out with sunshine over the hills, low clouds if you are awaking up this wlv÷mor, we are seeing some temperatures in the 60s and the typical low clouds for the middle of the summer. in the peninsula it's now 63 degrees, as we get a closer look we see some spots in the mid 50s as we head over towards south

san francisco. today highs reaching 86 degrees, 82 degrees in redwood city, mission district 70 degrees, 82 santa rosa, walnut creek 88 des, plas an ton 89 degrees. heading into the weekend the heat continues to come down and more clouds moving in, possibly rain as we head towards sunday. let's check in with mike for traffic. we will so he the bay bridge where both you and laura referenced, we will talk about the traffic, it is moving smoothly, just the backup at the toll plaza and we do have those low clouds that kari talked about. they are both right. a smooth drive on the approach, no problems. a light volume there. the only real slowing is southbound 880 from hayward down towards whipple and ten son. there may be activity around industrial. i think it was actually two total incidents, though, as far as the details. we are looking at the rest of the bay, a smooth flow, palo alto to problems, guys, southbound away from us heading

san francisco is expected to conclude today. and friday morning. a closely watched court case in san francisco expected to conclude today and it could shake the foundation of embryo preservation. mimi lee is suing to keep the embryos that she and her ex-husband agreed to if they divorced. she told the judge it is her only chance at having a biological baby since she's 46 years old. and that she never believed she

was bound by an agreement the couple signed at the fertility center in 2010. lee and her estranged husband froef five embryos. the last of the beaches closed while crews cleaned up an en mouse oil spill near santa barbara set to reopen. the beach nearly clean for the first time since the may 19th spill. as of last month cleanup costs have climbed to $92 million but yesterday crews said that cleanup was 98% complete. there are several investigations still ongoing into what caused the pipeline to break. greek leaders promising to fully reopen banks on monday. greeks still need to get money. people waited in long lines at the atms. new york central bank is opening new lines of emergency credit after the bailout deal while the nearly billion dollar cash infusion will help greek leaders fear the new round of painful austerity measures will force a new ee lek within months.

waiting, tesla known for making a splash and today the company is going to make a major announcement. tech crunch says it will be made sometime around 11:00 this morning. there is some speculation that the news could be surrounding shipping dates for the long awaited model x. maybe more if you say about the so-called giga factory or it could be nothing at all and the company is doing a good job of getting us involved and the media riled up. following in the footsteps lax now the largest airport in the company to allow ride sharing services to pick up passengers. as long as uber and lyft following rules. at&t using virtual reality in the fight against distracted driving. it's kicking off a 100 city tour to let people stimulate what happens when they take their eyes off the road to answer a phone call or tech. it's part of at and t's it can

wait campaign. all eyes on google. the tech giant shooting to an all time high in after hours trading yesterday following earns that beat wall street expectations. that was due to online ad revenue and more people clicking on paid ads. it is the second most valuable company in the world behind apple. an all time split, at least a historic one, ebay, paypal officially becoming separate companies. ebay acquired paypal for less than 2 million bucks. today paypal is worth an estimated $43 billion. analysts tell the mercury news that that split will allow paypal to grow quickly and better compete with mobile payment services like apple pay. ebay is struggling to retain customers against stiff comp anything from amazon and other e-commerce sites. they are going to begin trading on the stock market as separate companies on monday. time to check that microclimate forecast as we take

a peek outside. sunol, dry hills. kind of looks like my lawn. it's so dry. we're used to it being to green out there. we are in the midst of this drought. a little hint of rain. >> we could see a tropical system he bringing rain in the middle of the summer. >> is that from hurricane dolores? >> yes. it will be weakening. it mainly moves into southern california, but a little bit of that may creep into the bay area. we are hoping that we can get a nice little shower or two out of that as we take a live look you see the low clouds this morning, great start to the day. today will still be a warm one and into the next couple of days the heat comes down because we will have more clouds moving in from the remnants of that system. now it's in the low 60s in the peninsula, also in the 50s, here is where we're headed in afternoon, 82 degrees in the peninsula, south bay 88 degrees and 77 degrees for the east bay. so if you're heading to the east bay for the oakland a's game,

highs will be in the upper 60s at first pitch, temperatures will be dropping back to 65 degrees by the end of the game and also this weekend there is a lot going on. we've got some of those listed at nbcbayarea.com. the annual native american festival happening on saturday in the north bay at 10:00 in the morning it will be 57 degrees and jumping up to 65 as we go through the middle of the day. hurricane dolores, this is what could impact our weather. it has weakened to a category 1 hurricane, wind speeds at 80 miles an hour and by monday it becomes a remnant, but fairly close to baja, california and southern california as well. this is what computer models do with this system. by saturday into sunday we start to see that moisture spreading in, that means more clouds, higher humidity for us and a chance for showers, but this may michelle alley begin as lightning by sunday afternoon and then the rain could follow late sunday night into early

monday. we will keep tracking that for you. otherwise enjoy a great weekend, highs in the 70s and 80s across most of the bay, still in the 60s in san francisco, tri-valley warm at 89 degrees on saturday and then down to 86 degrees with more cloud cover once again, that chance of isolated lightning as we head into sunday and then maybe some rain. we will keep an eye out on that for you once again. let's check in with mike. highway 92 the san mateo bridge sees more traffic flow, but it's flowing well. maybe an issue for 880 south out of hayward, there is a crash somewhere between ten son and industrial, that's your second crash for the morning. that's causing more backup. we currently have your right two lanes blocked and that's slowing down folks getting to the san mateo bridge which is moving just fine. no real issues, this is friday, a lighter volume of traffic all around the bay. the north bay, san rafael, southbound 101 the curves moving

rampage that killed four marines. a navy sailor remains in in critical condition this morning and the is suspect is also dead. this is the latest incident to put federal authorities across the country once again on high alert. that is especially true in our nation's capital. "today in the bay" edward lawrence is live from washington, d.c. where security is extra tight in morning at many federal buildings. >> reporter: many federal buildings across the country including there in the bay we're already seeing it here in the washington, d.c. area, massive police presence at places like union station which is the train station that's right near the u.s. capital. federal authorities taking no chances and increasing security just in case. the fbi is investigating the attack as and a act of domestic terrorism. several officials say there is indication that this may be inspired from overseas through social media and the internet. because of that security is being stepped up at some federal buildings and military facilities across the country. >> i appreciate the reach out that has taken place at the

local and state level and federal level to ensure that we're very aware of what is occurring. >> we will explore any possible and that includes whether or not anyone else was involved in this. >> reporter: just last week the fbi director told congress. >> there's a group of tweeters in p syria and their message is two pronged, some to the so-called caliphate and live a life of some sort of glory or something and if you can't come, kill somebody where you are. kill somebody in uniform. >> reporter: sy has relentless urged followers over social media to stage attacks. veterans know how hard it is to identify a lone gunman. >> the military around here and dod cops we have, they do their best to protect us and spot the people, but a lot of times you don't know who they are. >> reporter: and president obama says this shooting is just heart breaking. he says that he is getting briefings on the investigations as well as the increased security going on across the country. reporting live in washington,

"the today show" will pick up our coverage of this story coming up at 7:00 this morning right after "today in the bay." we are constantly updating our social flat forms with new information as we get it in. just download our free nbc bay area app. a guilty verdict for james holmes. now the jury will decide whether he should die for his crimes. yesterday jurors rejected arguments that holmes was insane when he opened fire inside a colorado movie theater three years ago during a sewing of the "dark knight rises." he killed 12 people. dozens of others were hurt. the penalty phase of the trial starts neck week. holmes will either spend the rest of his life in prison or be sent henced to death. it will take several months for the broken bone in former president george h.w. bush's neck to heal. the 91-year-old suffered that injury earlier this week when he fell at his home in maine. doctors say he is going to spend some time in a neck brace and it

will three to four months for that break to heal on its own. we are told former president bush is in good spirits. cleanup efforts underway in earn illinois after this, a massive tornado whipped through the area. the warren county sheriff's office says there are reports of severe damage in the area. residents are not being allowed in the area as deputies survey the damage. debris can be seen swirling in this video. no word yet on any injuries. at 6:34. a nice picture here in the bay area, san jose. nice and is sunny, but, kari hall, tracking the fallout of hurricane dolores. you said we height see some lightning and rain this weekend. >> yeah, that could be on sunday. right now it's going to be a nice start to the day and then some more warm weather heading into the afternoon. nice and quiet today and tomorrow. sunday is the day we will be watching. right now with those

it's 6:38 on your friday morning. a live picture outside the golden gate bridge. traffic flowing freely. love to hear that. california water regulators are taking action against a tracy irrigation district. telling testimony to some pumping water out of the san joaquin river or else. the board is issuing a keys and desist order saying the west side irrigation district has failed to obey a previous warning to stop pumping. now they're facing hefty fines. that action could be the first of many for farmers and cities in california. a bill inspired by a second grader now heads to the governor's desk. the bill allows children of live in workers to attend schools where their parents live and work the majority of the week. the bill was inspired by a second grade daughter of a live in nanny.

the mercury news first reported her story. both the state senate and assembly passed that bill. an ohio man facing charges after he saw a car crash and got inside the car to film the injured teenage passengers, one of those passengers died. police say the man opened the back door and leaned into the video to take a cell phone video, never tried to help the 17-year-old boys who were trapped inside. that man is charged with vehicular trespass. coming up next an update to breaking news, overnight flames keep fire furts busy in the east bay. something you don't expect to see, a tesla slamming into a south bay store overnight. a live look outside. we return again to downtown san francisco, the coca-cola bottle from the at&t park outside area there, baseball is back in action. we will be back in action, too, with 15 minutes of nonstop news, traffic and weather after this break.

a solution to a potentially dangerous problem, bob. >> reporter: the city of los gatos not only meeting with police today, but also with caltrans to see if they can put an end to this. you a're looking at gridlock in downtown los gatos. one woman told us the other day it took her 20 minutes just to go four blocks just so give you an example of how bad its gotten. that's in spite of this town's small size. what the city believes is happening, whenever highway 17 gets backed up, especially with people trying to head to santa cruz, drivers filter on to the streets of los gatos, looking for an alternate route, a work around. it was a rear problem july 3rd. as you were alluding to, laura, the city has concerns about fire and police trying to get to emergencies. today in that meeting the city will ask caltrans if it would be possible to close the highway 17 on and off ramps during peak congestion, they will also ask police if they can spare some officers to deploy downtown to

killed john d eflt mmimg, jr. during a burglary investigation earlier the month. his family fired a prominent attorney to investigate that case. his football team is going to hold a scrimmage tonight. more trouble for san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi. the union representing san francisco sheriff deputies filed a grievance against the sheriff following the recent controversy surrounding sanctuary city status. in documents obtained by the chronicle the union says in march mirkarimi banned deputies from telling federal immigration agents when they released suspects. the union says the killing of kate steinle allegedly by an undocumented immigrant who had just been released from san francisco custody shows the policy puts people in danger. the sheriff has not responded to the grievance, but yesterday mirkarimi did respond to the mayor's request to change the

sanctuary city policy. mayor ed lee says the sheriff should have notified federal immigration authorities when the man accused of shooting steinle was released. in a letter mirkarimi replied saying there needs to be more clarity on the policy. he says he wants to have an open discussion with the board of supervisors. the investigation into that deadly shooting at pier 14 soon turned into something else. a different disturbing crime. the day after the shooting of kate steinle san francisco police divers searched the waters below the pier and found the body of a cat. the cat was attached to a ten pound weight. police found a mike chip in the cat which led them to the owner. san francisco police are cracking down on bicyclists near golden gate park. san francisco examiner reports the new police captain at park station is annoyed by the high number of cyclists running red lights and cruising through stop
