national spotlight once again. why the father of kate steinle is in washington, d.c. this morning. >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay.." thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. an update to that breaking news. did you feel it? many people in the bay area waking up a little on edge this morning after an overnight quake truck near fremont. >> "today in the bay" bob redell joins us live in the niles district of fremont this morning. bob, it was just a 4.0 technically a light earthquake, but of it enough to jolt one guy out of his recliner. good morning. >> reporter: people we've spoke with said it lasted around two to three seconds. we've caught a lot of people at the 7-eleven because this is in the niles district of fremont, the epicenter, one man said a good jostel, another woman who has been in california all her life said it was more like a baby quake.
6:01 am
let's show you where it hit on the map, again, the miles district here in fremont striking around 2:41 this morning, along the hayward fault according to usgs, magnitude 4.0. a couple of aftershocks within the 10 to 15 minutes, 20 minutes afterwards, one was a 2.7, a 2.6. now, when you look at this on the sighs mow graph you see that flat line and squiggly lines of the initial earthquake. it does look very violent, does look dramatic, but if you talk to seismologists they will tell you this was considered actually to be a light quake, should not be a surprise to many people who have been living here a listening time, but the reason why it's getting so much attention is it was so widely felt. >> i just kind of felt all of the house shake and then i told my husband to wake up and he got up and went through the house and his father-in-law was in the recliner, he fell out of his recliner this way and everything around the table, all the chairs got moved and he just checked the kids after that and made sure his father was okay.
6:02 am
>> what made your father-in-law fall out of the chair, just the surprise? >> he was reclined back. >> is he okay? >> yes. he got up said, man, everything was moving after i fell, i didn't know if it was me. >> reporter: fremont police tells us they received a lot of phone calls from people who felt this quake, but no reports of injury or damage. chp checked the free ways in this area, union city, hayward, fremont, those checked out fine and bart did their usual track inspections after a significant earthquake like this. again, no damage and everything is on schedule. reporting live here in the niles district of fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay." if you think that you feel an earthquake in your area head to our website, nbcbayarea.com, there you can find our realtime interactive bay area quake map. it lists all of the quakes over the last 24 hours regardless of magnitude. we are constantly updating this story, bob redell is tweeting out new information, you can also download our nbc bay area app for free to get the latest

information anytime. developing this morning, we are waiting for an update on the condition of a man who was shot by fremont police. he is accused of chasing his roommates with a knife. this happened on baffin avenue near san pedro drive which is near new park mall. police tell us a woman called 911 around 7:00 last night saying she and another woman were being chased by that roommate. when police got there had he say they were confronted by that man with a knife and two of the officers opened fire. neighbors living in that usually quiet neighborhood say that they are shocked. >> shocked. i really can't believe thatting something like this happened on our street. i hope the guy is still alive. i hope nothing -- you know, he didn't get killed or anything. >> the man was taken to the hospital where he was rushed into surgery. no word yet on how he is doing this morning. the two women were not hurt. also in the east bay, a man dead after his car slammed into a funeral home in oakland this happened a little bit before
6:04 am
10:00 last night at fuches hudson funeral home on telegraph and west macarthur. it appears the cars likely crashed at high speed. many people living in the area were stunned by what happened. police were on hand afterward to keep the crowd at a distance and no other cars were involved. police are not releasing the name of the man at this time. new this morning, firefighters in oakland had to call for backup to help put out this house fire overnight. it happened just after midnight on montclair avenue not frar park boulevard. six people were living in the home. we talked to a woman who was asleep when those flames woke her up. >> i was like what is that? what's going on? he got up, opened the door and then there was all of a sudden flames and smoke coming in through the door from the living room to our bedroom. >> everyone did make it out safely and crews were able to get the fire under control in a little less than an hour but you
6:05 am
see they are throwing the couch out the second story window. no word yet on how extensive that damage is. also new this morning, ten people are looking for a new place to say after two duplexes burned overnight. the fire started just before midnight near the corner of york and alameda streets. when firefighters got there one dee plex was on fire, another was threatened. the fires was under control in 20 minutes' time. no word yet on the cause. the heart wrenching testimony on capitol hill. this morning the father walking with his daughter along the embarcadero when she was shot and killed is in washington, d.c. to speak at a senate hearing on immigration enforcement. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joins us live in our san francisco newsroom and what he and other families have to say so spark major changes, including to san francisco's controversial sanctuary city policy. >> reporter: that's right. on that same policy for cities across the country. here in san francisco that policy led the sheriff's
6:06 am
department to release the undocumented immigrant and accused killer of that pier 14 shooting. he was released just a couple months before that shooting killed 32-year-old kate steinle, the pleasanton woman who just moved to san francisco when she was shot walking pier 14 with her father july 1st. mexican national juan francisco lopez-sanchez is the alleged gunman, she hadden been deported five times before and has seven felony convictions. he was released from san francisco county jail despite an immigration request which has lawmakers talking about changes to sanctuary city policies but local immigration activists say lopez-sanchez represents a possible drug addict who might have mental health issues, not a representative of u.s. immigrants. >> we have to be very careful not to criminalize and stereotype an entire community on the horrible actions of one accused person. >> now, republican iowa senator chuck grassley requested this this morning's hearing. he said it was, quote, disturbing that law enforcement agencies in in 43 states
6:07 am
declined more than 8,800 tee taner requests by i.c.e. during a nine-month period last year. at the hearing at 7:00 this morning steinle's father is fifth in line to speak to senators. it should be emotional as we are set to hear testimony from family members of victims killed by undocumented immigrants. live in our san francisco of newsroom, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." the archdiocese of san francisco is asking leaders at all levels to work together. in a press release archbishop cordileone said new policies should not punish all immigrants because of the poor decisions of a few. he said while it is important while we learn from this incident and work to prevent it from happening again it is also important we recognize the vast majority of immigrants both those with and without papers who are not a violent threat to society and so should not be subject to guilt by association. he also offered his condolences to steinle's family. happening now, bay area politicians are representing

6:10 am
we will take a look at the rest of the week's forecast including the weekend in less than five minutes. how are the roads flowing? >>. they are flowing pretty well, but building up. let's look over to the bay bridge, we had a bit of a problem, we have a smooth slow up toward the berkeley curve, building here as well as 580 off of 24 and 880 past the couldel seem. on the bay bridge head we had a late pickup for a road crew and over near we are looking at oakland at the bart line, it is moving slowly and the bart system recovering maybe ten minutes at the most delays after early checks after the earthquake. the freeway moves slowly. you see the jam for west 580, improvement for the berkeley area coming out of the east shore freeway and slowing north 880 heading up toward the area. still marking had a stall across the stand spap, there may be something going on toward treasure island. northbound 101 moves very much smoothly. north of 680 the southbound side

6:16 am
firefighting, air ambulance or search and rescue operations to be able to force drones out of the sky and not to be liable for damage. >> we need to put a stop to it so we're going to give them the ability to take out a drone if they are endangering people's lives. >> ideally paa would need to be able to dispatch some sort of emergency signal for a specific gps location to where all the drones would receive that information and ground themselves safely. >> roen advocates say that zapping a drone's circuitry or shooting it out of the sky could be dangerous because the drone could strike a firefighter or innocent bystander as it falls. they warn that it could even start another fire. time to check the microclimate forecast. we will look live at the golden gate bridge which we usually do when it's going to be blazing hot around the bay area as a little bit of relief, but this time you will be comfortable pretty much wherever you are. >> yesterday so warm, even in san francisco. we had that over the weekend. now you can breathe a sigh of
