>> wow. >> here in new york city 83 degrees. it's hotter in new york city this morning than it is in miami where it's 82. still it's early, only going to get hotter. >> tell them about the humidity. >> man, it's here in the northeast we are going to see a little break. but for our friends in the south and the southeast, there is no relief in sight. we've got this big dome of high pressure, that's pumping in the heat and humidity from the gulf all the way into the northeast. however, there is a cooler less humid bubble of high pressure that's about to make its way into the northeast and the great lakes. but right now, from texas all the way to the carolinas, and virginia we've got people with heat advisories and excessive heat warnings temperatures that will feel like 110 in some of the warning areas. today 92 in new york city norfolk 94, 95 in wilmington. as you slide to the south and west, it's even worse. dallas, you'll probably have your first 100-degree day of the season. same in jackson, 98.

for our friends to the north, minneapolisp, that front moves through. you're at 82. 78 in chicago. 76 in cleveland. much cooler air, more of the same on wednesday. that cool air gets here in the northeast. look at this. by wednesday 87 in new york 88 in washington, d.c. buffalo, 77. but down to the south still hot, temperatures will stay well above normal. and along that front we're looking at pretty heavy showers and thunderstorms firing up as well. so we've got a lot going on and that heat's not going anywhere. >> look at that map stop our wining. >> there is a new twist. >> in the investigation into the deadly shooting ram pain in tennessee. following leads the fbi searched an apartment for clues that the gunman may have shared his plan with others. nbc's miguel almaguer is in chattanooga. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the fbi spent hours here focused on one apartment complex talking

to neighbors. we know the suspect spent time here, had friends in the area but what they know remains unclear. the fbi now focused on this chattanooga area apartment. a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation tells nbc news officials are looking into whether at least two acquaintances of the suspect knew of his intentions in the months prior to the attack. before mohammad youssuf abdulazeez opened fire on two military facilities killing five, he sometimes expressed anti-american feelings says a family spokesman. when he was vulnerable the gunman was drawn to extremist views. in his dark moments thought of jihad. his parents never thought he was a real threat though the spokesman says the 24-year-old was in a downward spiral, depressed, hooked on drugs and suicidal before he pulled the trigger. >> there are millions of people in america that suffer that never commit an act that he committed. >> reporter: the family

spokesman says the gunman's parents saw him tuesday arguing about his dui, the start of a three-day bender. he rented the mustang convertible he used in the shooting speeding through chattanooga with friends before the bloodshed. but many who knew him say there was no indication he harbored extreme beliefs. with the fbi processing his cell phone there remains no official lifrpg to any radical organization. a family spokesman says the parents knew their son was struggling but never thought he would be capable of this. the gunman was living in a rented room with two other men but he would spend weekends amend off time in this area we're told before the shooting he spent more and more time in this neighborhood. savannah. >> miguel almaguer thank you. shawn henry, former executive director of the fbi now

president of crowd price services. so now we're learning investigators are looking into whether friends had some knowledge of this beforehand. how serious would that knowledge have to be? how much would they have to know for the friends to potentially be subject to any criminal prosecution? >> there would be a couple of things. are these people co-conspirators, who were aware and were going to participate in overt acts or are these people friends who may have heard him say something, are they potential witnesses, can they provide additional information that will give direction and continue their leads. >> we're learning more getting this portrait of the gunman it's complex. on the one hand seemed to struggle with depression had suicidal thoughts couldn't keep a job. apparently had substance abuse problems. is this somebody who would be a ripe target for radicalization? >> i think that's absolutely right. these are the types of people that are susceptible, they are not closely aligned necessarily with family or in some cases start to pull away from family

they are struggling with personal issues looking for something to ground them to bring them back. this is one of the types of people, these types of situations isis wants to capitalize on. >> they have to be scouring his computers to see whether or not he had any communication with anyone overseas. we know he spent time in jordan with family maybe perhaps something happened there i guess they will ask. >> that to me is the critical piece of this investigation. that jordan component, if this is isis-inspired or directed they are looking at that. what did he do who did he speak with and what was the critical change when he came back caused him to lead up to this event. >> so many questions. thank you very much. thank you. donald trump we're talking about him again this morning because he finds himself atop the crowded field of republican presidential hopefuls. that's according to the newest poll. even as he courts controversy seemingly at every turn. is that a winning strategy?

nbc's peter alexander has more on that. good morning. >> reporter: controversial comments have led many of his republican rivals to say he is disqualified himself to be commander in chief. now iowa's paper is joining them writing that trump is not only unfit to hold office but unfit to stand on the same stage as his republican opponents. they are calling on him to terminate what it calls his ill-conceived campaign as trump is speaking out again. donald trump isn't apologizing to john mccain. on monday night he inched closer. >> i have respect for senator mccain, i used to like him a lot. i supported him and certainly if there was a misunderstanding i would totally take that back. but hopefully i said it correctly, and certainly shortly thereafter i said it correctly. >> reporter: that misunderstanding refers to these comments he made about mccain in iowa this past weekend. >> he's not a war hero. he's a war hero.

he is a war hero because he was captured. i like people that weren't captured. >> adding. >> he is a war hero balls he was captured. okay. and i believe -- perhaps he's a war hero. >> reporter: trump's opponents remain unimpressed. >> he should apologize. move on to the next thing. >> reporter: in an editorial the des moines register in iowa is calling on trump to, quote, pull the plug on his bloviating side show. the paper blasts trump as affectless blowhard who can generate headlines and polling numbers not by provoking thought but provoking outrage. in the vietnam war while mccain was prisoner in the hanoi hilton trump who graduated from a military high school was on the way to an ivy league degree avoiding the war with four student deif you arements later a high draft lottery number. politically trump who seriously flirted with a white house bid in 1999 has been all over the

map, even registering as a democrat in 2001 before changing party years later. some of his past statements more closely resemble democratic positions like on abortion. >> i'm really pro choice. >> reporter: now he says he is pro life and his support of health that are sick. >> we'll see how those positions sit with many of those early state republican voters. still, a new "washington post" poll shows trump leading the republican pack by a wide margin nationally. there are some signs his support, however, may be waning. that poll found a meaningful drop in support for trump the day after his comments about john mccain. matt and savannah? >> peter alexander on this. peter, thanks very much. while donald trump and the rest of the republican field will have a new face to contend with starting today. ohio governor john kasich has scheduled a special announcement at ohio state university. he is expected to become the 16th republican to enter the race. as for the democrats,

hillary clinton hosted her first facebook chat. as a presidential candidate on monday. it was followed by thousands with topics ranging from her plans to reform wall street to libya to business attire for women. the former secretary of state saying i never met a pantsuit i didn't love. clinton also weighed in on her republican rivals and the issue of immigration, saying donald trump, in particular, is getting a lot of attention for some hateful rhetoric. but jeb bush and marco rubio actually agree with him on denying a pathway to citizenship. of the thousands of questions she received, clinton answered 12, 4 of those came from reporters. also, we are learning a lot more about last month's brazen prison escape in new york that led to that massive manhunt for two convicted killers. and tamron's following this one for us this morning. tamron, good morning. >> good morning. the lone survivor, david sweat, is apparently giving officials a thorough account of that escape, detailing its planning and execution, even comparing it to the movie "the shawshank

redemption." >> reporter: according to "the new york times," david sweat told investigators from his hospital bed how he planned his escape in extraordinarily specific terms, portraying himself as the driving force. according to the report, sweat started devising a plan this winter after he was transferred to a cell next to matt. almost immediately he began cutting a hole in the back of his cell using a hacksaw blade. each night he would wait until after the 11:30 head count to crawl through the hole, shimmy down a series of pipes, going down several stories and roam the tunnels, looking for a way out. he would then return to his cell each morning before the 5:30 a.m. count. >> he was looking for a way that he could find a weak point, find a place where he would be able to get out. >> reporter: sweat reportedly

had a macgyver-like sense when heat from the steam pipes became unbearable while cutting through concrete wall, he rigged a fan from his cell, using electricity from the tunnel's light. >> he was creative, at least according to his account, in the way that he dealt with the obstacles that he faced. >> reporter: like so many others, sweat and his partner reportedly compared their efforts to the escape in "the shawshank redemption," joking that while it had taken andy dufresne 20 years. it would only take them ten. >> whether it was skill, whether it was determination, they were able to do something that many people weren't able to do before them. >> sweat who was already serving a life sentence was moved to a special housing unit last week where he's confined for 23 hours a day. the new york department of corrections and community supervision has filed formal disciplinary charges against him. i'm not sure if that matters because it's just on top of all of the other issues, but to your

point, savannah, you mentioned he's the lone survivor, so he can take credit. the other guy obviously was killed by authorities. and we know that prisoners often like to brag about their escapades. >> sure. >> apparently he had nothing to lose. spilling the beans. >> the more he talks, the worse it sounds for the guards and supervisors of that prison, many of whom have been sent to other places. >> tamron, thank you. natalie's here with an important meeting on a landmark deal. >> that's right. well, secretary of defense ash carter met with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu in jerusalem today to ease concerns over the iran nuclear deal. it comes a week after western powers and iran reached that historic agreement. netanyahu has strongly criticized the deal, calling it a mistake of historic proportions. carter is scheduled to visit jordan next to visit a base used in the war against isis. and this morning two dramatic videos of people trying to rescue children who were locked inside hot cars. the first is from the kansas city area. you can see employees of a shoe store trying to smash a car

window. there was a 2-year-old girl inside. and witnesses say she was drenched in sweat. it was 91 degrees outside, much hotter, though, in the car. eventually they rescued the girl, and they brought her inside the store. according to the manager, though, the couple who said the little girl was their niece, asked if insurance was going to pay for that window. they were then ticketed for child endangerment, but they could face more charges. and now to another scene. this one in philadelphia. this time it was police officers who were trying to smash their way into an suv. and there was a baby and a young girl locked inside that car in 90-degree temperatures. the mother accidentally locked her keys in the suv, and then she quickly dialed 911. the kids were rescued, and fortunately they are okay. well, the search is on for a pricey parrot stolen from a california pet store. take a look at this surveillance video. you see a man taking an african gray parrot off its perch.

he then carried the $1,600 bird out of the store on his arm. store employees were busy with other customers, didn't seem to notice it was gone until later. the store owner says the bird is too young to eat on its own. and he's concerned it may die unless it's found soon. longest british open ever is finally in the books. on monday, golfers played the fourth and final round. saturday's high winds pushed the tournament back a day. even four rounds were not enough. zach johnson, louis oosthuizen and marc leishmann were tied at 15 under. so they had to play a four-hole playoff. and in the end, it was johnson from iowa city, iowa, who took home the claret jug. it was his second major win. he also won the masters back in 2007. that is such a hard name to pronounce. >> and he got really emotional, zach, when he was talking to a reporter after that win. kind of teared up.

>> reporter: he's a surfing legend a world champion, but nothing prepared him for this. >> i felt so insignificant. like the thing was so powerful. yeah, just moved so fast. you know i was just trying to maneuver my way around it. >> reporter: fanning has been reliving that moment. >> the most vivid part is just you know just seeing the main fin. at that stage, i was just screaming. >> reporter: as a wave blocks the live tv pictures the shark attacked again. >> all of a sudden it came back again. it just was right there. i don't know if i punched it hard or if it was little baby punches. so i turned around and was on my back and i was just waiting for it you know i had my fist cocked. once my board was gone you know i thought that was it. i was just waiting for it to come and take a leg off. >> reporter: as he swam for his life fellow surfer julian wilson swam to help. >> i saw him start to get kind

of manhandled by the shark. he was kind of getting ingting wrestled off his board. a wave came between them, and he was fearing for his life. >> reporter: with the shark still circling fanning escaped on a jet ski. >> someone was looking out for me. you know to walk away from you know a shark attack with not a scratch on you, it's -- it's a miracle, really. yeah just sort of more of an emotional mental sort of trauma right now. >> well shark experts say that was almost certainly a great white shark. mick fanning, a very shaken man, but he says he wants to get back in the water soon. and he was asked if he had a message for the shark. yeah he said "thanks for not eating me." back to you guys. >> simple. back in the water soon. i mean -- >> i can't imagine. >> it would take me months to even think about it. >> i appreciate that he's honest about what a disturbing

experience it is. he's not trying to blow it off. it was hard. we will keep in touch with him on that story. now to the latest on another one we told you about on monday. a group of hackers that apparently broke into a popular website dedicated to helping married people cheat on their spouses. and the hackers who are threatening to expose the personal information of some 37 million users. nbc's tom costello's been talking to computer experts about all this. tom, good morning to you. >> hi savannah good morning. ashley madison's parent company admits it was hacked. a permanent delete function offered to customers by the website never actually deleted customers' private information. not so says ashley madison. that information is deleted. but now hackers are threatening to release very personal information about those customers. ♪ ♪ ashley madison ♪ >> reporter: it's a website that is unapologetic about crossing moral or ethical lines. >> life is short. have an affair. >> reporter: ashley madison is all about helping men and women

cheat discreetly. its ceo telling dr. phil it's been happening since the dawn of time. >> and so ashley madison, stop this thing from happening, of course not. it would continue to happen on single dating websites or the birthplace. >> reporter: it says it has 37 million customers, are worried about serious collateral damage. after a group calling itself the impact team hacked the site then threatened to release private details about ashley madison's customers if the website doesn't shut down. names, credit card information, even naked photos and secret sexual fantasies. in a statement, parent company avidlife said "we apologize for this unprovoked and criminal intrusion into our customers' information. and we have been able to secure our sites, and close the unauthorized access points." brian krebs monitors hack attacks worldwide and first reported the attack. who should be worried right now? >> the people who thought that they might be trusting this

company with their information. i would say they would be very concerned right now. >> reporter: in its privacy statement, ashley madison said we treat data as an asset that must be protected against loss and unauthorized access. but in chat rooms, self-described customers seem worried. one man writing "i'm an idiot! i signed up for ashley madison a long time ago, even gave them my credit card details." from a woman, "the only thing that bothers me about it is the explicit photos which occasionally show my face." but also comments like this. "they don't magically lose the right to privacy just because some schmos on the internet decide they're on the wrong side of the moral track." >> so people kind of have this attitude of well it serves them right. but the reality is these people still had that expectation of privacy, and they should have been able to maintain that level of security that they expected. >> up until now, customers who wanted to completely delete all of their information on the website had to pay $19. the hackers claim that information was never truly scrubbed.

the website says it was, but now it says anyone who wants their information completely deleted will not have to pay. guys back to you. >> it will be interesting to see how their number of subscribers drops over the next couple of days. >> yeah it's a little too late now. >> thank you. let's get a check of the weather from mr. roker. >> announcer: "today's weather" is brought to you by advil. the pain reliever that's built to be as fast as it is strong. >> and as we look at some of our severe weather moving right from texas on into oklahoma we're focusing out west actually where we've seen remnants of hurricane dolores still dropping rain. and we'll be looking at more rain in the sierra today. some areas picking up about another one on two inches of it. that got us thinking. and in fact the national weather service put this out. how much rain would we need to end the drought in six months in california? well in the breadbasket of the state, 16 to 20 inches of rain 12 to 16 between lake tahoe and

fresno. and as you get into southern california you'd need four to eight inches of rain. the chances of that happening, 5 to 15% in the southern half of the state. but upwards of 35 to 45% of a chance with all this moisture and an increased el nino we may see more rain for texas -- for california and that would be a good thing. and also new geography. we're also looking at wet weather through the southwest today across into the southeast and mid-atlantic states. the heat continues down through the south. that's what's good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. all dry across the bay and a lot of sunshine. no more of that unbearable humidity. highs in the lower 80s the next three days in the peninsula expect highs in the 70s, san francisco dropping back to the upper 60s and the north bay starting out at 85 degrees today, but then trending around 80 degrees for the end of the

but when you go vegan, there's no animal foods allowed whatsoever. so that's all of the meat, plus no eggs, no dairy and even things like gelatin and honey. are off limits. it's like the pope of vegetarianism. >> we've got a sample day for a vegan. first, there's pros and cons of the diet. >> so there are a lot of pros. the first thing, you're eating a lot of plant-based foods so it's loaded in vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, also low in saturated fat and cholesterol. vegans compared to meat eaters, vegans tend to weigh less. they have lower bmis. also it could help to lower your blood pressure and cholesterol and protect your heart and also fabulous for the environment. >> any cons? >> just a few. i think the typical things. first is that you have to go out of your way to focus on getting adequate protein. otherwise you're eating heaps of starch. also because vitamin b-12 is found in animal foods, you need to probably take a supplement or work with a nutritionist. and also it looks like anything, it requires a lot of planning, and it can be difficult socially

because if you're at a dinner party, let's face it. a lot of people make their entrees around chicken, around fish, around meat. and then you're picking on the side. >> let's look at a day starting with breakfast. >> this is a bowl of oatmeal made with soy milk because you want to try to get protein into each and every meal. and i also topped it with fresh fruit and nuts. this is great. you could have things like scrambled tofu in the morning. there's a lot of creative ways to get your protein in. >> looks tasty. >> for lunch, a bowl of lentil soup. this could be lentil chili or a black bean soup, a nice salad, some fruit. there's so many snacks. hummus and vegetables. also things like rice cake and nut butter. you can make your own trail mix using whole grain cereal and nuts and dried fruit. for dinner, this is matt lauer's favorite dinner. it's a tofu vegetable stir fry. >> i would think dinner would be the toughest meal to transition to as a vegan. >> it is hard, but i also think in restaurants, chefs are being so creative.

you can get things like tofu teriyaki. yesterday on the show somebody made cauliflower steak. there's a lot of really delicious things. also you can stuff a spud. take a baked potato and you could put things like black beans and salsa, guacamole. wine is vegan. >> now you're talking. >> that's right. >> and for dessert, there's a lot of fun ways that you can sort of heighten regular fruit. so this is mango with coconut. and hey, a lot of dark chocolates are vegan because they don't have milk with them. >> i grilled pineapple last night. >> delicious. with a dash of balsamic vinegar. joy will be back with more on how you should decide if going vegan is right for you. tomorrow the inside scoop on the mediterranean and paleo diets. matt up to you. >> i have tara and ian here from "sharknado." tell us something. >> i'm having a baby.

or paper flowers. >> you've done something cute with the vases. how did you do it? >> again, make you feel extra special. we feel one off. here's one for you. >> now, what am i trying to do? make it a circle or whatever you like? >> work it around. >> all right. there we go. >> so if you make it flush -- >> yes. >> -- and you can add different stripes here. >> cute. >> and then you would trim it around. at the ends. >> you have it on some frames too. >> yes. >> which is a great idea. >> so you can see, we can zhush up normal white frames here with the contact paper. we can do it diagonal or vertical stripes. >> these placemats are cute. a lot of kids select shells. >> we go to the beach, collect shells. here's a fun way to make use of those shells. you spread ink on a clean white tablecloth. it's not going to come out the same color. it comes out in a different color. what ends up happening is you put the shells on top. you set them out in the sun for 20 to 30 minutes and what ends up happening is the sun bakes

the color in. and wherever those shells are, that stays white and light. and then you wash them and dry them and then the color comes out and you'll see the contrast of the shells and the background. >> it's really cute. and kids would love it if their shells and they make their own placemat. >> it's a great thing to do together. >> canisters great, function. what did you do? >> we're always looking for ways to bring color into the kitchen. here's a way to bring colorblocking into glass jars. popcorn, candy, pasta. here we're going to tape it off. grab acrylic paint and a brush. all we're going to do is paint. >> paint over? >> in this triangle. >> oh okay. i see, okay. >> the tape will block out wherever we paint. >> so you get a nice line. >> exactly. and we'll dough a couple layers. >> what kind of paint? >> this is just acrylic paint that you can get at any store. i would let this dry and i would do another two or three coats. >> okay. >> and then you'll see right here this one's already dry. when we peel it off, it makes a nice sharp edge. >> it looks really good.

it's super cute. and i love all the bright -- they don't have to be matchy-matchy either. >> exactly. and if you want you could also add a different color over here where we did two on these or you could just do one. >> all right. looks cute. another one, an older kid could probably get in on this. >> absolutely. >> if i can do it i figure a kid could do it. i love what you've done here. this is the living room. these beautiful neon lights. how on earth did you do this? we could probably dim the lights to show it. >> in my new book i love neon lights and i love the idea that you can take that idea and use "l" wire. it comes in a bunch of different colors. and so -- >> let me turn it on. so what is this string? it's so cute. >> it's called "l" wire. basically what you do you write a word. something in cursive writing and then nails and hammer them in place. here we have "yeah yeah yeah" in three different colors. in the back it will flicker and you'll see the neon lights come into effect. >> very cool. tell me how you made these cute

about a year ago, ebola became a household name or word with the crisis in west africa and word that two americans had contracted the virus there. dr. kent brantly was clinging to life when he was flown out of the country for treatment at emory university hospital down in atlanta. he had taken an experimental drug never before used on humans. it may have contributed to saving his life. now he's written a book with his wife, amber, "called for life." kent and amber, good to have you here. nice to see you guys. >> thank you. >> how you feeling? >> i feel great. >> yeah? last time i saw you, you were a little drawn. you had just been through an incredible ordeal. are you back to 100% now? >> yeah i think around christmastime is when i finally said i think i'm back to normal. i think i feel normal again. >> i went through the book last night, and it's filled with emotion. it's filled with fear and your diagnosis and your sickness and how close you were to death. but it's also filled with the emotion of gratitude and generosity and kindness toward

the people who helped you. was it hard to go back and write this? >> it was very emotional experience reliving all of those moments and working through them in great detail. it was very emotional experience. but i think it was a healing experience to go through that again. >> you write about one day -- and i mean you were a doctor treating ebola patients on the front lines. you knew the devastation of the disease firsthand. and then you got diagnosed. you write about a day you thought would be your last day on earth. >> yeah. thursday july 31st. >> you'll never forget that date will you? >> ten days from now. >> yeah. when you get to that date, in ten days will you look back with some kind of sense of awe? >> i never know how to anticipate what's going to -- what that experience is going to be like when i hit one of those anniversary dates, but i think -- i think we will definitely take some time to reflect that day on what could

have been and what has happened in the last year. >> amber, we should mention he was diagnosed -- you were here. >> yes. >> and you must have felt so helpless hearing that "a," he had been diagnosed with ebola, wondering when he could get back here for treatment, and were you watching like all of us when he came in that ambulance to emory university hospital? >> yeah i was. i was watching the ambulance drive down the highway, saw him step out. i heard the speculation from the reporters, do you think that's the doctor? did they send a decoy? i knew it was kent. >> you got incredible treatment at emory university hospital. i know a lot of your time has been trying to express gratitude to the people who really put themselves out for you. >> i am -- i will forever be thankful to the people at emory, especially for being willing to take care of the first ebola patient in america, but also to the team in liberia, dr. john

14 who was speaking to senate lawmakers today. jim steinle addressed the senate judiciary committee in a federal hearing over immigration policies. prosecutors charged an undocumented immigrant in the shooting of kate steinle three weeks ago. san francisco deputies then released him in april from the county jail. one person died last night after their car slammed into a funeral home. happened on oakland's telegraph road and west mcarthur. from the video, appears the car did crash at a high rate of speed. no other cars were involved. police have not yet identified the man who died. and we will be back in a few moments with a look at weather and traffic.

taking a look at the headlines. a new shopping website launching this morning promises to safe you money while taking on online retail giants like amazon. it's called jet.com. 50 bucks a year gives shoppers access to pages of products from diapers to digital cameras. now prices change based on how much you're buying and where it is shipping from. jet.com says they will only make a profit from membership fees. all other savings will be passed along to the consumer. target is facing a backlash over a t-shirt sold in its stores and online. it has only one word on it. it says "trophy." a lot of women are complaining that the fashion statement is sexist and demeaning. there's even a petition posted to change.org calling for the shirt's removal which has been found in some of target's junior departments. the retailer has posted

and having some fun this summer. but before you go camping or jogging there are some potentially dangerous warning signs and symptoms that you should know about. >> here to fill us in is nbc medical contributor dr. natalie azar. >> good morning. >> we've been hearing about lyme disease. it's that time of year. it seems like there's an increase in cases as well. what should we be looking for? >> okay. so what the picture here shows is something that's called the bull's-eye rash of lyme disease, which is the classic. this is where the tick bite happens. it's red there. there's an area of palor or whiteness and this zone of redness around. super importantly is that up to a quarter of people who have lyme disease will not develop this telltale rash. we were talking earlier a doctor could easily diagnose lyme disease when they see this, you know, in an appropriate setting. you might have been exposed and have symptoms. if you don't have the rash but you have early symptoms of lyme that is fatigue, a flulike illness, malaise, swollen lymph node s and you live where there's a high risk, high-risk counties you need to get

yourself checked out. >> a lot of parents have gotten to the point -- we do this, too -- where your kids come in from playing all day, you do a head-to-toe check. >> head-to-toe check for ticks. the life cycle is the smallest. it's the one that we see most around this time can be tiny so you really have to look really, really carefully. >> let's move on to our next one. >> and treatable. >> very treatable with antibiotics, absolutely. >> dehydration. how do we handle it? >> here's what's interesting. we've heard a lot about deaths recently i believe in arizona from people who should be experienced to be out in the elements and stuff like that. but important to remember that people, especially who are most at risk vigorous exercise without rehydrating. the very old, the very young, people with chronic illnesses. signs to look for. and i have to say that if you're feeling thirsty, it's not too late but that's a sign of dehydration already. so you want to stay well hydrated during and before and after these vigorous activities. but other signs would be a dark-colored urine. if your urine is very light, light yellow, it suggests that you're well hydrated.

so increased thirst, decreased urine output dry skin headache. even constipation, dizziness, light-headedness and obviously more severe, you need to go to an emergency room. the treatment is rehydration very logically. >> okay. asthma. >> yes. >> this time of year can be really hard to breathe, hard to sometimes distinguish, is it just the hot air, sticky? >> right. >> or do you have asthma? >> do you have asthma. the symptoms, what are classic symptoms of asthma would be a cough, shortness of breath, chest tightness and wheezing. you don't necessarily to have to asthma to have these symptoms. if you're allergic to something you have a lot of allergies you may have these symptoms. it might be counterintuitive to think of asthma being worse in the summer. we usually associate it with viral triggers like infections in the fall and winter. and we certainly see an uptick then. but things that can cause asthma, exacerbation in the summer would be humidity, things like that. always have something an asthma action plan. know your triggers. have an emergency treatment around. close contact with your doctor. make sure that you're always

well prepared. >> a lot of people swimming in pools lakes, oceans. you get water in the ear it can be annoying and sometimes even painful. >> absolutely. my son had this a couple years ago. i'm very familiar with it. i'm not a pediatrician. but classically, yes. it's called otitis externa. there's water that gets in there. that's why swimmers get it so much. water is a moist environment. it breeds infection. the way to determine if a child has the infection you push on the outside of the ear here or the inside, i should say. you pull on the earlobe. very, very painful. that distinguishes it from the classic middle ear infection that the school-age kids get. you can pull their ear all you want. it's not going to hurt them. the treatment for something like this very simple. you go to your pediatrician. you'll get a drop that has steroid antibiotic in it. and it usually clears up. the way to prevent it, dry your ears. use a towel. have the child lie, you know with the ear pointing down. wear earplugs, that kind of thing. >> real quick poison ivy. this is the month people are

in a seismograph, you can see the quake and some of the aftershocks that followed. it's been nearly 150 years since the hayward fault last triggered a major earthquake. to oakland now, a driver died after crashing his car into a funeral home. it happened on telegraph and west mcarthur. police haven't identified the man who died but he was the only one involved. a look at weather and traffic coming up right after the break.

okay, hody, if it's a battle to get your family eat veggies, we have recipes begging them for more. >> we're making peppers three waysñ r courtesy of the chef owner of doro restaurant in greenwich, connecticut. >> down the street from you. >> ruben, how are you? you're right down the street from kathie lee. >> i'm coming in this weekend. i didn't know. it's a down stairs restaurant, you said. >> what are we making today? >> we're making an iberian dish. we have fresh cilantro, olive oil, peas, this is a smoked paprika which gives an earthy tq8& chorizo, garlic, of course the highlight of the dish, the peppers, long grain rice, bay leaf and onions. so we'll start off by showing you a demo of you you should

prep the peppers. >> does it matter what color? >> it doesn't matter as long as you have your preference. i find the green peppers are a little overpowering sometimes. >> me, too. let's not use it. >> it tends to take over the dish. >> there's an idea. >> the orange, yellow and other ones tend to bex so we'll hollow this out with the knife. take out the guts. use the smaller knife so you don't damage anything. once you hollow it out you have to nice hollow person, we add it to here. i keep the tops and roast them with it for decoration so people can see that, you know, it has a nice top. now we'll start to make the rice. the rice is simple start off with garlic and onion, saute in the olive oil. we'll take -- hoda, would you -- >> uncooked rice? >> no, first we'll add the chorizo to render and some bay leaf. that goes in at the end. so now we'll start to render out the fat, it will give color to the dish and flavor.

add the rice in. >> so uncooked. >> uncooked. you want to coat it with the fat a little bit. >> i like fat. >> i just like to say it. >> a lot of it? >> all of it. >> you let that simmer. >> we let that zimmer. the rice, you 'w so it contains steam inside. thank you. and basically it comes out looking like this. >> that looks like -- >> we'll remove the bay leaf so you don't choke on those. >> people try to eat those like they try to eat a whole artichoke. >> they can damage your insides. then take the paprika. now we add the paprika. stir it around and now this is ready to make our filling. if you choose that you don't want to use chorizo and you can go all vegetarian, add zucchini string beans a little bit of kale, kale is popular, chop it up and fold it in there. >> smells good. >> this is beautiful fresh picked cilantro.
