traffic. look at the map, we have no problem as far as speed sensors go. easy drive all around. the oakland a's play tonight, 7:05 game. rhett of the day as far as freeway. back to breaking news out of the east bay. breaking news following possible shots fired at hayward this morning. looking into a report that an officer was hit. >> a swarm of police activity near the intersection of myrtle and lions street. wondering what that is, between 8th street and winton street near 880 where bob redell is live with overnight developments. hearing from folks wondering what is going on out there. >> reporter: over at burbank elementary, a block away from the scene where the police are setting up command post, sending a public information officer to confirm reports. video fresh in the newsroom, it shows somebody being put into an ambulance and taken away.

we do not know if that's a hayward police officer or someone else, but the report is that around 3:15, 3:20, there was an officer trying to pull over a person who was driving erratically, thises in the area of lion and rotary, the neighborhood right behind me here, residential area, part of hayward. in the process of trying to pull this person over, shots fired and that possibly officer hit. tremendous law enforcement enforcement presence, about the known police but help from colleagues at alameda county sheriff's officer, california highway patrol. something you don't see often at a regular crime scene, hayward police officer with his rifle drawn, guarding the scene. could not tell if there was an active search going on. right now none of the officers at the scene are commenting. waiting for someone with hayward police office, public

testimony on capitol hill. he asked the committee to correct loopholes in the city sanctuary laws and pass kate's law which would impose a minimum five-year sentence on undocuments immigrant whose re-enter the u.s. after being deported. he blames part of the death on the release of the suspect lopez sanchez, released in march from jail. he has seven prior felony convictions and deported five times. >> the feel of kate's law saves one daughter, one son, a mother, a father, kate's death won't be in vain. >> following that, mark ferrell introduced legislation requiring the sheriff to notify the federal government when undocumented felon is about to be released though the measure won't be heard until september. the suspect is due in court at 9:00 this morning. of course, woel e'll be there. stephanie chuang, "today in the

bay." >> thank you. not just tears but questions in walnut creek. two young people who many describe as among the best and brightest academically are both dead in an apparent murder/suicide. police got a call of shots fired yesterday in the north homestead neighborhood. when they got there, they found two people dead at front door of the house. >> all indications are that it's a murder/suicide between a 19-year-old female victim and 21-year-old male suspect. she had been in a dating relationship with. >> the 19-year-old shooting victim is claire orton, she was home for summer break after finishing first year at san diego state. orton study ing environmental engineering and on the dean's list. her alleged shooter is 21-year-old scott bertics, he graduated from acalnes until 2012 and enrolled in stanford. a man shot in an apparent case of road rage. police trying to track down the drivers involved.

it happened yesterday in west san jose. police don't know what sparked that confrontation at this point but when both of the drivers pulled up to a stop sign, one driver started shooting at the other. police say bullets hit a man who was on the sidewalk. he is expected to survive. meanwhile, uc berkeley campus police on high alert after a string of burglaries there. burglars are smashing windows and stealing computer on campus. the burglars have hit at least 20 offices so far, the most recent one at uc berkeley high school of business. police don't yet have a description of burglars but urging residents and staff to report any suspicious behavior. >> san francisco city leaders moving forward with a controversial plan to bill a new jail in the downtown area. last night the board of supervisors voted to request an $80 million grant from the state to help fund that new facility. the jail would replace aging facilities at top floor of the hall of justice on bryant

street. supporters, including sheriff, say that change is needed because the old jail is not seismically safe. opponents say the money should be spent on programs to reduce jail population. today is make or break day for the on again, off again labor deal involving santa clara oh workers. workers revote on a tentative deal reached this month. talks came down to the wire before both sides reached this deal. then came the vote, which workers shot down. that's when the union indicated some union members were not fully informed about what they were voting for. employees had been on the job ever since but with a no vote today, all bets are off. >> pleasant start to the middle of your workweek here. if all we can complain about is patchy fog, we'll probably take that. meteorologist kari hall joining us to look at your forecast. >> i'll cake take it we don't ho deal with high humidity and

>> welcome back, live look outside right now at a darkened san jose skyline as we get ready to kick off wednesday morning. happening now on the east coast, massive fire burning at an auto body shop and car dealership in north brunswick, new jersey. look at those images. to give you perspective of how large this fires, north brunswick police officer describes the warehouse as the size of 50 football fields. for hours now, heavy flames and thick smoke pouring from that building which is used by toyota for vehicle repair and storage. smoke can be seen for miles, even as far as manhattan, which is more than 30 miles away. no reports of injuries. >> a lot of cars. free yo of irish law firms stepping up to help families and survivors of last month's deadly berkeley balcony crash. firms working with families on a pro bono basis.

technically all claims and representation must be handled by attorneys from the united states. the collapse killed six irish students, seven others were injured. it is shocking video, also sparking a conversation here in silicon valley. reporter for wired magazine recorded himself driving 2014 jeep cherokee, aware two computer experts try to take over the car and they did. they were successful. hackers accessed the jeep through infotainment system and managed to take full control, even killing the engine. cybersecurity experts say this is no laughing matter. >> i can only imagine if the same thing was done to you without any forewarning whatsoever, how much fear that could instill in someone. >> chrysler, which owns jeep, at least the software update this month, the team focused on identifying and implementing cybersecurity for quote all tech

connected vehicles yesterday the congress introduced a bill requiring connected cars protect drivers against cybercriminals. residents facing imminent eviction in san francisco planning on protesting today. members of a community art space in the mission district, an area undergoing serious redevelopment. the art space, self-space, sits in a building in bryant street. it's supposed to be demolished to make way for new development including 250-unit apartment complex. san francisco's housing boom could help improve public transit in the city. "the chronicle" is reporting that mayor ed lee looking to add a transportation sustainability fee to new market rate condo and apartment projects. that would bring in an extra $14 million a year for transportation. that money would be spent to add extra muni buses and railcars as well as make streets safer for bicyclists and pedestrians. don't need too much extra change, mcdonald's going to dish out egg mcmuffins all day long.

clear, after millions of dollars and years of headlines the federal case against barry bonds is over. the u.s. department of justice announced it will no longer pursue charges in the decade-long steroid case involving bonds. in 2011 a jury convicted the former giants player of obstruction of justice but that was a verdict that was overturned by a judge last april. after that announcement yesterday, bonds released a statement reading in part, this outcome is something i have long wished for. i am relieved, humbled and thankful for what this means for me and my family moving forward. whoo! >> oh, yeah, baby. feel the excitement. one of the most popular soccer teams in the world dualed the san jose earthquakes last night, and the europeans won. down as part of the international champions cup of north america. the earthquakes fell to the english team 3-1. man-u will take on fc barcelona

>> that breaking news in hayward, where a neighborhood is locked down this morning as officers respond to reports of shots fired. >> let's go right to "today in the bay's" bob redell, live in hayward, off of 880. the whiten avenue exit. you talked to neighbor about what happened. what did you learn? >> reporter: good morning. neighbor telling us they heard seven shots fired around 3:00, 3:so, we're in the neighborhood of lion and myrtle, a residential neighborhood. you feel the heavy police presence not only with hayward but california highway patrol and alameda county sheriff's office. this is the report so far, there was a police chase involving a driver, a person in a car, driving erratically, when they got to the location shots fired, possibly hitting the hayward police officer. as you saw in the video we put up on the tv screen, you did see somebody being put into an ambulance, where w. that was the officer or someone else,
