bob, you talked to neighbors. have police told you anything new? >> reporter: still waiting to hear from police. might be a news conference forthcoming. but here in the neighborhood of mirtle and lion, several shots fired according to a couple of witnesses, around 3:00 this morning. and the reports, shots between hayward police officer and a suspect in a car who was driving erratically. i want to show you newer video. this is from oakland. this is a of a white pick jup truck, possibly driven by the suspect. notice it had bullet holes i believe three on the side of the truck. we are looking to report the license plate of the pickup truck matches the vehicle that police was trying to pull over early. this is video from the crime scene we're we're at now. there's somebody put into an ambulance, somebody who appears to be in very critical condition, in the sure whether this united statis a police off somebody else. someone transported from the

transported by the ambulance that we saw in bob's live report taken to this hospitaler to treatment, steph? >> reporter: right, kris. unconfirmed but hearing it may have been the hayward police officer possibly shot this morning brought here to the eden medical center here in castro valley. emergency room is behind the main building there. we have limited time before security made us turn around. outside the emergency room entrance i saw substantial police presence. it looked look a mix of officers as well as perhaps ambulance and hospital staff members. also two hayward police patrol cars, alameda patrol car, hayward fire engine and officer on a motorcycle. the chp officer just arrived. we asked him for information. he didn't know anything he hat just gotten there also didn't know if law enforcement would talk. but this is a greater law enforcement press sense than we

a home off of joseph drive. one house skied and a neighboring home damaged. no word on how that firefighter was injured. but he was taken to the hospital and released. no one else was hurt. >> happening today, the man accused of killing kate steinle in san francisco's embarcadero heads back to court. this comes one day after her father spoke to congress about the loopholes in sanctuary city law. the suspect described by police as an undocumented immigrant with a long criminal rap sheet. >> we feel if kate's law saves one daughter, one son, a mother, a father, kate's death won't be in vain. >> yesterday, jim steinle told the senate judiciary committee the suspect juan francisco lopez sanchez the result of incompetent and disjoined laws, his release was. also several deportations on his record. >> the u.s. suffered a

self-inflicted wound in the murder of our daughter by the hand of a person that should have never been on the country. >> mark fire ferrell introduced documentatio documentation. the measure will come up for a vote in september. grief, tears, questions in walnut creek. two young people, many describe among the best and brightest act dem li academically both dead in a murder/suicide. police got a call yesterday. when they got there, they found two people dead at the front door of the house. >> all indications are that it's a murder/suicide between a 19-year-old female victim and a 21-year-old male suspect that she had been in a dating relationship with. >> the 19-year-old shooting victim is claire orton, home for summer break after finishing first year at san diego state.

orton studying environmental engineering and on the dean's list. her alleged shooter 21-year-old scott bertics, he graduated from acalnes high school in 2012, enrolled the stanford. pit bull in san francisco recovering from two gunshot wounds after a confrontation between the dog and i federal police officer ended in gunfire. a u.s. mint police officer shot a pit bull named blue yesterday morning. this happened a block away from the mint. the dog's owner says his two pit bulls accidentally got loose, and an officer shot one of the dogs when he saw it acting aggressively toward people on herman street. the owner says the 1-year-old pit bull is not aggressive. >> it's very hard for me not to be angry about it. i have to try to be forgiving and try to understand from his perspective. i mean he may have been very scared. >> one of the officers' bullets hit a neighbor's house.

blue may lose his right rear leg but he is expected to survive. police are taking over this investigation. >> a warning to people living in los altos, crooks pretending to be water utility workers are talking their way inside of homes and burglarizing them. the men showed up at two homes monday, claiming that the water supply had been contaminated due to nearby construction. once inside they ran faucets as a distraction. police say one of the homeowners realized he had been burglarized after the men left. uc berkeley campus police on high alert after a string of burglaries. the bay area news group reporting burglars are smashing windows and stealing computers on campus, not from cars but offices. so far 20 offices hit. the middle east most recent -- most recent uc berkeley school of business. urging staff and students to

report suspicious behavior. oakland security guard could spend the next several years in prison, a jury convicted him of beating astudent in the wheelchair. in it you see school security guard mitchell kicking martinez inside the halls of of oakland high school last year. mitchell pushed martinez out of the wheelchair and seen punching him. mitchell now faces up to four years in prison. today is make or break day or for the only again, off again labor deal involves thousands of works. sciu workers revote on a tentative deal reached this month. talks came down to the wire before both sides reached the deal. when workers came to vote on it, the workers shot deal down, when the union indicated some members were not fully informed about what they were voting for. employees had been on the job ever since but with no vote

today, all bets are off. parents and deeteachers los their battle to keep a popular preschool at the current location. it lost its lease with antioch school district. 300 children attend the school. preschool leaders don't have an alternative yet. they'll talk about possible options later in the day. time to check the microclimate forecast as we take a mike scopic look at san jose and the sunrise over the hills in the distance. a hazy start, but it is going to be mild by this afternoon. >> and great weather to get outside, too. with the lower humidity we don't have to deal with that. seeing low clouds and mist starting out the day in san francisco. it's 60 degrees there, north bay 56 degrees. and lower 60s elsewhere across the bay. highs today reaching into the 70s and 80s for most with nice breeze and afternoon sunshine.

still cool, though, in the city, 64 degrees and clearing as we go into the afternoon and the north bay. winds kicking up from the west 15 to 30 miles an hour. heading into the next couple of days, more weather like this, maybe even a little bit cooler. not usual weather for the middle of july but toward the weekend, more seasonable weather headed this way. i'll detail all of that coming up in less than ten minutes. and now, mike is tracking problems in the east bay. what's happening? >> we have this crash, chopper over the scene a few minutes ago and took video of this. look at that car went into the barrels, the yellow barrels, busted them up, busted up the car and blocking alane north 238 southbound 880. castro valley y out of castro valley ep hope for movement. i've seen the speed sensors change. they may be clearing lanes. south 880 at tennyson one car on the shoulder.

now over the scene of a reported shooting of:14 now. breaking news as chopper over the scene of a reported shooting that happened early this morning that may have involved a police officer. so far, hayward police are saying very little about what happened but video shot at scene appeared to show an officer placed into an ambulance and rushed away. police will not confirm if that officer was hit by gunfire. this incident unfolded on myrtle street at lion east of interstate 880. other unconfirmed angles as well. it's believed authorities discovered a pickup truck tied to the incident abandoned in east oakland. they don't know whether this is the one that was involved in a -- in the traffic stop. someone tied to the incident may

have checked themselves into the hospital in the area. police gathering around eden medical center in castro valley but not a lot of information coming from the department about whether anything is going on with the officer involved. >> three different police agencies on the scene now. twitter blocked in turkey. that country's government blocked access to the social media site to keep people from posting images of a deadly bombing earlier in the week. 32 people killed in the blast on monday. officials worried the attack retaliation for a crackdown on islamic militants in the country. government official says twitter is working to remove or than 100 urls with picture of the aftermath. plit political leader give thumbs up our thumbs down to the bailout deal. the parliament will vote on reform measures and depending how members vote it could open the door to still more negotiations about a bailout

before it can be finalized. greece's finance minister calls the vote crucial in moving forward with economic reform. >> a lot of eyes on apple this morning, the tech giant lost about $60 billion in market value in after-hours trading yesterday. for most companies a sizable chunk. while apple reported profits that beat wall street's forecasts the numbers disappoints investors. sold more than 47 million i phones but less than what was expected. apple won't say how many watches it sold. at&t and directv one step closer to wrapping up the $48 billion merger. the fcc and the justice department signaling they are going to approve that deal with some conditions. at&t will have to bill out broadband connects to more than 12 million locations and the company must provide regular reports on network performance. the deal would create the nation's largest paid tv provider. >> a big recall this morning

involving stair lifts. british manufacturer acorn stair lifts is recalling more than 34,000 chairs after two people were killed while using them. if you have one of these chairs, call acorn immediately. the recalled models are the five versions of the super glide 120 sold between march 2007 and december of 2011. this is shocking video and sparking a conversation in silicon valley. a reporter for "wired" magazine recorded himself recording 2014 jeep cherokee aware that two computer experts would try to attack control of the car and they succeeded. the hackers accessed the jeep through its infotainment system and managed to take full control, even killing the engine. cybersecurity experts say this is not a laughing matter. >> so i can only imagine if the same thing was done without

forewarning whatsoever, how much fear that could instill in someone. >> chrysler, which owns jeep, released a software update this month and the company says it has a team focused on identifying and implementing cybersecurity for all tech connected vehicles. yesterday congress introduced a bill requiring connected cars to protect drivers against cybercriminals. that is scary. >> complete loss of control there. 6:18. a look at your microclimate forecast. outside the bay bridge in san francisco, city that saw temperatures rise into the 80s earlier in the week. but if you're looking for a repeat performance today, not your day. >> yesterday it barely made it into the mid-60s in san francisco. low clouds and cool mist and you can expect the same thing today. but elsewhere inland valleys and the inland areas across the bay area will be heating up into the 70s and 80s. here's a live look now at san jose. and the seven-day forecast pick out where you like, you can see

where we'll be as we head into the weekend with some cooler air for the next couple of days. absolutely gorgeous outside. check out this sunrise from the sunol hills, low clouds settling in below the hills and clear skies above. and now in the lower 60s for the east bay. concord, it's 62. santa rosa, 56 in half moon bay starts out at 59 graes. after those morning low clouds clear out, pleasant afternoon with warm afternoon sunshine. lunch time, this will be your temperature, in the 60s and lower 70s for most. highs only reaching the upper 70s in the peninsula and lower 80s for the south bay, north bay expect a high of 83. and nice little onshore flow today. here's a time frame as we head through the late morning hours, winds picking up from the west at 15 miles an hour. may pick up to about 20 miles an hour, especially in the north bay as we go into the evening. bringing in that cool ocean breeze. as i take you hour by hour in

san jose, we see 60s starting out into the upper 70s this afternoon and it will be absolutely gorgeous today. great comfortable weather, no more of that high humidity. and we keep this weather heading into the end of the week, into the weekend with highs mostly in the 70s and 80s across the bay. let's get a look at traffic with mike. >> look at this big shot of the bay, smooth drive south bay starting that build for 101. one key spot the big issue now, westbound 580 out of castro valley. through the castro valley y, crash with south 880 blocking one lane. clean up the barrels busted out after the crash. we don't have details on the status of the driver. chp trying to get the roadway cleared. that means probably nothing major because they're trying to clean it up. bay bridge toll plaza metering lights. that's it. let's get a live look out and show you all lanes filled except the lanes off to the left approach, those started lightening up last knew low

dealership in north brunswick, new jersey. to give you perspective a massive fire burning at auto body shop and car dealership in north brunswick, new jersey. to give you perspective on how large the fire is, a police officer described the warehouse as about 50 football fields in length. for hours now, heavy flames and thick black smoke pouring from the building used by toyota for vehicle repair and storage. the smoke can be scene for miles as far as new york city which is 30 miles away. no reports of injuries. you might be paying higher price at pump. california oil reeven riz still making money in record amount according to "the l.a. times" which looks at a consumer watch dog group's analysis in the first half of the year. it shows state refineries almost doubled the amount of profit they collect on a gallon of gasp

profits this year are approaching 90 cents per gallon. oven the past 15 years profits averaged 50 cents per gallon. california gas prices, though, settling somewhat over the past week. the same is true here in the bay area. san jose's average is $3.51 a gallon. that's the same as a week ago. san francisco also unchanged at 3.53. oakland's is a fraction higher but less per gallon than san francisco. >> this just in, halfway across the world, hear in mayor sam liccardo in rome. he's addressing the pontifical academy of sciences about social inclusion, telling audience affordable housing in san jose is the linchpin linking haves and have-nots. mayor liccardo is in rome along with mayor ed lee and governor brown for climate talk as the vatican. >> i spotted ed lee in the distance. neighbors say that you have to see this to believe it.

even then some people had a hard time believing it. take a look at what folks in milwaukee in a neighborhood say they spotted. that look like a lion to you? that's what the homeowner said, too. officers did check the neighborhood for several hours but didn't find any sign of the big cat. one woman says she got it on video. >> everybody looked at it and said, i think this is a lion. then of course your heart skips a beat and you think, goodness, this could be something serious. >> what do you think? lion, dog, cat? i don't know. milwaukee county zoo says they checked their enclosures, lions are all accounted for. police are adding extra patrols just to be on the safe side. i think riding around with windows rolled up. >> not staying in the house, that's for sure. a wildfire burning out of control in one of the country's national parks. >> in walnut creek, more

bob, and the police presence as we've seen is very heavy out there. what have you learned? >> reporter: we know that several hayward police officers gathered outside eden medical center, not far from here, we know that neighbors here near myrtle and lion, where you see the heavy law enforcement presence, neighbors heard several shots, fired early this morning. as you can see in the video we're putting up on the scene, one person was put into an ambulance and taken to that hospital. it appears that person was in critical serious condition at the time of transport, not clear if that was a hayward police officer or someone else. the reports we are hearing is that a hayward police officer tried to pull over someone driving erratically in the neighborhood. a neighbor heard someone doing doughnuts in the car followed by police sirens and as many as seven gunshots. then later, this morning, police fund this white pickup truck on 98 and east in oeshg wiakland w

pier 14 shooting this month is expected to return to court. juan francisco lopez sanchez pleaded not guilty but admitted in the jailhouse interview he did shoot and kill kate steinle. >> police this morning in walnut creek investigating apparent murder/suicide involving two college students from the east bay. police say a 21-year-old former acalnes high school student shot and killed his ex-girlfriend and then turned the gun on himself. santa clara county workers vote to ratify a new contract, union already voted down that plan two week ago but union leaders say workers might not have been informed about the deals' nuts and bolts. trump stirring up controversy, this time getting under the skin of republican senator lindsey graham. hi called him a lightweight and made graham's cell phone number public.

despite the backlash, people seem to like him. polls show trump twice as popular as any other republican. >> he's unconventional, he is speaking truth to power. >> he knows how to work the media and doing it very well. >> republicans say trump is distracting the campaign from the issues and should drop out of the race. >> vice president biden back in the bay area tomorrow. his last visit was in april and this is it when he visited a job program under way at pg&e in oakland, he also stopped by to have a sandwich. he'll visit a company developing a portable blood testing kit. afterward he will join a roundtable discussion on innovations in the field of preventative health care. developing story now. firefighters are battling this massive wildfire in montana right now. those flames quickly chewing through a thousand acre of the glacier national park overnight. authorities are evacuating campers as crews fight the fire.

mostly 70s and 8 as across the bay and lower humidity with that sunshine makes for a great day once again to get outside. let's see how traffic's flowing with mike. >> first, what was holding things up, slowest spot for the bay at castro valley y, chopper over this crash after it happened, barrels busted, that car busted as well. we didn't get detail on the driver but they have cleared the crash. that means it wasn't too serious because they were able to clear the scene with only the issue being the debris. recovery for castro valley and west 580 on to north 238. rest of the bay moves smoothly. looking at bay bridge toll plaza with metering lights on and the north bay though it looks smooth here, i want to show you this live camera at san rafael, southbound commute direction. there was a report and chp saying someone was going quickly northbound in the southbound lane. going to travel through the camera shot but chp cleared that saying we had a traffic scheduled but can't find the

"james holmes" guilty on all 6:39 right now happening today, the same jurors who found james holmes guilt c. on all counts in the movie massacre come back together, this time to determine whether holmes should pay for crimes with his own life. the jury found holmes guilty of first-degree murder for the shooting deaths of 12 people inside a colorado movie theater three years ago. the penalty phase expected to last a month. jury will decide whether holmes should spend the rest of his life in prison or be sentenced to death. >> a new twist in the death of a woman in custody in texas. this time involves newly released dash cam video of her arrest. sandra bland died in her jail cell three day after the arrest. police ruled it a suicide but family members suspicious. video includes questionable edits. authorities are now investigating the video along with bland's death. the department has placed the

arresting officer on administrative duty. people are calling an alert mail carrier a hero because she helped to save the life of a man trapped at his home for ten days. sissy cartwright noticed a man that she delivers to hadn't picked up his mail for some time. his mailbox at end of a long driveway in a remote area of alabama. so she decided to drive down the driveway to his home and that's when she saw the door was open and she heard the 66-year-old man calling for help. tommy hope had fallen down and broke several bones and could not reach his cell phone. cartwright called 911 and hope is in the hospital recovering. he says he survived by drinking water he found with a bucket -- water in a bucket he found filled with rainwater. cartwright says she was in the right place at the right time. >> good thing she acted on instinct. next, case moves forward against the undocumented

around here who tells us he heard seven shots around 3:00 this morning, fired between hayward police officer and suspect who we have reports was driving erratically in the neighborhood when the officer tried to pull that person over. now, here's video of the scene shortly after the shooting. you see one person who appears to be in very serious condition being put into an ambulance before they were taken away to the hospital. we have not been able to confirm whether or not that was the officer or someone else. hear from stephanie chuang shortly. there's a lot of hayward police outside eden medical center. but again, this was shots fired around 3:00 this morning and here's what a neighbor tells us he heard. >> i just hear it somebody making something like this. >> reporter: in their car? >> in their car. >> reporter: what did you hear. >> the police coming. and then you know, shots. >> reporter: seven shots. >> about seven shots.

>> reporter: this is video from oakland, it shows a white pickup truck possibly driven by the suspect. there are bullet holes, i believe three on the driver's si side. an officer found it in oakland. looking four the report of the license plate matches the vehicle that police were trying to pull over. again in the neighborhood where we're at myrtle and lion, not only hayward police but deputies from the alameda county sheriff's office and officers from california highway patrol to assist colleagues in the hayward police department. hayward p.d. latest, they are confirming an officer-involved shooting, they'll updates us around 15 minutes from now, bob redell "today in the bay" there thank you. >> bring in stephanie chuang who is outside of eden medical center in castro valley. this is where we believe that officer is getting treatment. steph in cases like this, we often see that police departments are very hesitant to release any information until they can talk with the families

first. are you hearing anything out there? >> reporter: yeah, from what i can tell you, unconfirmed but likely from what i observed this morning that the hayward police officer shot this morning was brought here to eden medical center where i saw a large group of police officers as well as cars in just minutes before the hospital security turned away by the emergency room entrance behind the main building there. they were talking with ambulance and hospital staff. seemed to be deep in conversation, sometimes police will make themselves available when they see media but this morning they seemed to want to stay back. it was perhaps more tense this morning. also saw multiple police cars from hayward, allameda, chp, evn medical -- eden medical the closest hospital to the crime scene, three miles away, ten minutes driving. worth noting the level ii tram ma center for the area,

recovering from two gunshot wounds after a confrontation between that animal and a federal police officer ended in gunfire. a u.s. mint police officer shot a pit bull named blue yesterday. this happened about a block away from the mint where the dog's owner says two pit bulls got out. an officer says he shot one of the dogs when he saw it acting aggressively toward people on herman street. but blue's owner says the 1-year-old pit bull is not aggressive. >> it's very hard for me not to be angry about it. i have to try to be forgiving and try to understand from his perspective. i mean he may have been very scared. >> one of the bullets did hit a neighbor's house as well. blue may lose his right rear leg but he's expected to survive. now san francisco police are taking observe the investigation. anment man shot in an a case of road rage. police are trying to track down the drivers involved. all of this happening yesterday afternoon in west san jose near

anderson elementary school. police don't know what sparked the confrontation. when both drivers pulled up to the stop sign, one started shooting at the other near the school. the man is expected to survive. uc berkeley campus police on high alert after a string of burglaries there. the bay area news group reports burglars are smashing windows and stealing computers, not in cars but on campus. the burglars have hit at least 20 offices so far, most recent happening at the uc berkeley school of business. police do not have a description of burglars but urging anybody on campus to report suspicious behavior. speaking of, a warning right now to people in los altos, crooks pretending to be water utility workers are talking their way into homes and burke burglarizing them. the men showed up at two homes claiming the water supply
