crews up against today? that the fires spread so quickly is the wind. let's go to pc. what are you looking at? >> this morning the wind is calm coming from the south southwest at about 5 miles an hour. there may be higher gusts as we go through the day but temperatures are nice and comfortable and humidity is up to 90% but will be going down as we go through the day. the rest of the bay starts the morning in the upper 50s in the peninsula and south bay, san francisco now at 60 degrees, a closer look there we see temperatures are in the lower 60s in the mission and the castro 59 degrees, glen park starts out the morning at 58 degrees. heading into the rest of the day we will have more comfortable weather, even a little bit cooler than it was yesterday, but this weekend temperatures start to crank right back up. more on that coming up in a few minutes. we are going to be updating this fire fight and specific evacuation orders throughout the morning on all of our digital platforms. stephanie chuang is going to have another live update as we continue to follow efforts to contain the fire.

in about 30 minutes. a chp officer is recovering from a head injury after cruiser was rear-ended. this while he was investigating a pratt crash. >> it happened last night just before 8:00 on westbound highway 580 right near marina bay parkway. the officer was on the scene of a different crash when his patrol car was slammed from are behind by another driver. the chp this to shut down both lanes of freeway traffic just to they could land a medical helicopter and get that officer to the hospital quickly. we don't yet know his specific condition but we do know that's stable. flowers, candles, even a miniature superhero all part of a memorial for hayward police sergeant scott lunger. the memorial set up outside the police station is steadily growing since yesterday's deadly shooting. the death of a police officer seems to be one of the few communities mourn. >> last night more than 100 people lit candles and some said prayers for that fallen officer.

"today in the bay" bob redell is live in hayward. you have been covering this story since it first started. certainly you can feel the reaction of the community. >> reporter: so much has unfortunately happened over the past 24 hours. you had the death of a beloved police officer and the arrest of his accused killer. the department called what happened dark and devastating day in the department's history as sergeant scott lunger becomes the fifth person who will have his name engraved on that granite plaque outside police headquarters in hayward honoring the officers who have died in the line of duty. police work is a dangerous job and as one police captain pointed out there's nothing routine about the routine. as we all learned yesterday morning when sergeant lunger and his partner pulled over a man who was driving erratically through a nearby neighborhood as sergeant lunger walked up to this person's car the driver without warning fired at sergeant lunger. his partner returned fire. later police arrested the

alleged sooter mark ast trad da, they arrested him at a hospital where he is being treated for a bullet wound. sergeant lunger has taken to the hospital where he later died. >> he was a great leader at our organization. he inspired people every day, an incredible friend, a great father. >> reporter: about 100 people as you mentioned including hayward fire and chp honored sergeant lunger at a vigil yesterday outside hayward city hall. he was 48 years old, a father of two towers, was a training supervisor in this department who had served in the department's s.w.a.t. and gang units. the hayward police department and sergeant lunger's family are working on plans for a funeral. they hope to have an announcement by saturday. reporting live here outside hayward police headquarters, bob redell, "today in the bay." partner down. shots fired. shots fired. white chevy sr.

chevy sr truck. he is still going. >> that is the shaky voice of sergeant lunger's part they are moments after that shooting. here is what happened, at 3:15 yesterday morning the sergeant and another officer pulled over a man driving erratically at lion and myrtle streets in a hayward. when lunger walked up to the truck police say the driver shot him without any warning. lunger's part officer fired back. that driver was hit but still managed to get away. all of this happening in 45 seconds. police later found the truck riddled with bullets in east oakland. several hours after the shooting the intense manhunt ended at the hospital. 21 injured mark ast strad da showed up to the hospital but was later taken to highland hospital. hayward police say they haven't yet found any prior arrests or warrants for astrada. police say he has gang ties but is not in a gang. he worked with his father at a roofing business. his neighbors tell us they are shocked to hear what happened because he comes from a good

capitol hill will hear again from the father of the woman shot and killed on san francisco's pier 14. jim steinle is going to speak now before the house subcommittee on immigration. he spoke to senate lawmakers on tuesday. an undocumented immigrant is accused of killing steinle's daughter, kate steinle, three weeks ago. that man, juan francisco lopez-sanchez, had been deported from the u.s. several times. jim steinle isrkó asking the congress to pass a law to crack down on deported immigrants who come back to the u.s. we will take you live to washington, d.c. when we get that for that report on the hearing coming up in about 30 minutes. meantime, the man accused of killing five people in a modesto home is expected to be moved out of santa clara county jail today. mark martinez was arrested it in san jose over the weekend and he's scheduled to be transported to stanislaus county sometime today to face murder charges in the deaths of his girlfriend, own mother, own infant daughter and two other children. the five victims were found dead inside a home in modesto last

laredo, texas today and he is supposed to hold a news conference, then speak with officers. this comes after trump's comments on immigration set off a firestorm of criticism. now republican opponents, one of om he personally insulted, are firing back. >> let no one be mistaken. donald trump's candidacy is a cancer on conservatism and it must be clearly tying deposed, excised and discarded. >> so as republicans continue to dual it out hillary clinton is gearing up to give a speech on the economy tomorrow. she will then head to iowa this weekend. it's already a safety concern for millions. now new concerns that the real problem with defective air bags goes way beyond air bag technology. near a dozen car makers have recalled air bags made by takata. the national highway traffic safety administration now says

the problems may actually be a broader issue, having more to do with cars lasting longer. researchers are looking into whether aging air bag parts are contributing to a dangerous mix. regular gas prices may be skyrocketing but some drivers are getting a bargain at the pump because teefl fuel is tanking. this is due to a worldwide supply and that's making diesel fuel cheaper than regular gas in many states. it's 71 cents lower in california. diesel typically costs more than gas as refineries export this most of it overseas and federal taxes are higher than regular gasoline, but now refineries are turning out more diesel than the world can consume. that's good news for us in particular because we have a fleet of vehicles some of which use diesel. no shortage of republican candidates right now in the race. the head of hp is getting involved in the presidential race this morning. >> me go whitman is throwing her support behind a republican

virus appears to be picking up california. according to the press democrat health officials are now reporting mend seen know county's first human case of the year. it follows word monday that a west nile victim died in nevada county. health officials aren't sure how they contracted west nile, it might have happened out of state. an update to that breaking news. we started the morning with 200 homes are now under evacuation orders in napa county as an out of control mild fire burns up trees and steep hillsides. fire has already burned 6,000 acres and is only 5% contained. we've seen video of at least one camp site burned, one home was damaged, an outbuilding was destroyed, but, again, there are several others in the path. investigators think that this may have started with a car crash. all eyes are on napa and we know, kari, that the heat and wind scaling back a little bit it this morning gives them a

wind toe. >> a nice window especially with the temperatures way down this morning, only starting out in the low 50s. today will also be mild but the next few face it starts to warm up there and humidity will be going down. we got a viewer picture yesterday from vacaville and this came in from jim nolan, you can see even from there the smoke billowing in the air. if you see something happening and can safely take a picture be sure to send it to us. now the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen, you can see the temperatures will be warming each day. and a look at what we are expecting as far as the forecast that may improve the weather conditions for the crews there trying to fight that fire. winds today may gust up to 30 miles an hour and the humidity does go down this afternoon but we know with a fire this large it may take a long time to get that under control and next week it is going to be very shot as we look ahead and the possibility of us hitting some

animal control officers yesterday said that someone shot a pit bull about two miles from that reported lion sighting, apparently in a fit of panic. fortunately that bullet struck the dog in the paw and the dog is expected to make a full recovery, but so far still no lion has been found. >> hopefully did not confuse said pit bull for a lion. a war veteran turned hometown hero. a wyoming family owes its life to an iraqi war veteran who ran inside of their burning house to save them. chris poe saw the family's house going up in flames and his instincts told him to rush in and take action. he alerted the two kids inside who had no idea that their house was on fire. both eventually got out of the house safely. >> i remember looking over at the tree and seeing the dad and the two kids hugging each other. that was great. >> i would really like to say thank you for what you did to help pie children and to put yourself at risk to help somebody you have never met, a family you don't know.

we will talk about how that build is shaping up on the approach as well. coming up. a good thursday morning. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm kris sanchez am for laura garcia-cannon. let's get back to that breaking news. the wildfire burning out of control and quickly making its way towards 200 homes. firefighters are trying to stop the flames, but this morning we have learned that the fire has grown instead. >> we have live team coverage this morning. we begin with "today in the bay" stephanie chuang who is near that fire zone. steph, this fire has ballooned in size since it started yesterday and now more homes are threatened. >> reporter: absolutely. from 5,000 acres to 6,000 acres and that figure changed around 2:30 this morning and along with that from 150 homes to 200 homes threatened. so the fire just growing every couple of hours according to these updates. we are here at the incident command post at highway 128 west of winters where cal fire

presence has grown in just the last few minutes. you see folks talking. this is where they are making decisions on how to attack this fire, this blaze. video from this morning shows how firefighters got a good handle in this area around slak solano where there still mandatory evacuations for the quail canyon along with nearby camp grounds. one house damaged and one shed or barn destroyed but no injuries. firefighters say they will likely be out here for days. they are dealing with difficult factors from the topography to the dry conditions. >> this setting is particularly challenging because of the steep terrain, there's very few roads so the access is limited, it it was dry, naturally four years of drought, vegetation is dryer than it ordinarily would be this time ofèt÷h year. >> reporter: as for what started all this, we've obtained video showing a car crash believed to have sparked this wildfire. the photographer tells us this video was taken near lake berryessa on highway 128. overnight firefighters have grounded air support, there were

six air tankers and four helicopters in the air at the height of the fire fight yesterday. cal fire says choppers will be sent out after 8:00 this morning when there is more light out. as for the number of homes that have actually been damaged, only one, but firefighters crediting people with making that defensible space around their homes they say there would be a lot more damage and homes destroyed if people this not taken those steps there. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." we mentioned we have team coverage here so combine that drought, warm weather and wind you have a perfect storm condition for wildfire. we foe part of the reason this fire is spreading so quickly is the winds. >> let's talk with meteorologist kari hall about how the conditions might change today, kari. >> and the winds will start to pick up later on today, but right now conditions are favorable for them to try to get a handle on this. the temperature is only at 53 degrees, humidity at 90 degrees and it will be going down as we go through the day, we expect the humidity to drop down into

and great leader in her department, an incredible father and friend. as you can see by the number of flowers that have been braced out here at police headquarters, he is tremendously missed. yesterday morning sergeant lunger and his part officer pulled over a person who was driving erratically through a nearby neighborhood. as the agent approached the car police tell us that the driver shot him without warning. sergeant lunger's partner returned fire, the alleged shooter, mark astrada a 21-year-old man from oakland was arrested later at a hospital where he is till being treated for a bullet wound. yesterday more than 100 people gathered outside hayward city hall to honor sergeant lunger, hayward firefighters and california highway patrol officers lined the perimeter to pay their respects, other citizens in this city remembered the sergeant because of his work in the community. >> you see somebody you know and recognize who was shot on the line of duty, i mean, it's terrible. i can't believe it even

staying in the u.s., we're also going to hear from a sacramento sheriff who is going to be talking about priority enforcement, who get prierlt and who doesn't and also the fact that local agents like his need access to the ihm fwrags and customs enforcement database so they know when people are coming in and out of their system what their deportation status is. all of that happening here in just about an hour and 15 minutes. new this morning, two teenagers in police custody in connection with the death of five of their own family members in oklahoma. police detained those teens ages 16 and 18 near the scene in the tulsa suburb of broke an arrow. police found five people stabbed to death in a home. also inside a critically injured child. another child was found unharmed. all of the victims and suspects are part of the same family and all live at the same house. the fate of the nuclear agreement with iran will be explored by a senate committee today. it is the first of a series of hearings on this deal.

california's department of water resources. there on the top you see fulsome lake east of sacramento on the bottom lake orville. the pictures on the left were taken four years ago when you could still launch a boat from there. on the right these pictures taken from just a month ago. the scientists say an estimated foot and a half of rain would have to fall across northern california over six months. it's the kind of change you wouldn't necessarily always notice because it happens so slowly, but in this case taking pictures and seeing the two. >> sure. on our camping trips we have been able to camp right h edgele to camp right is getting closer to the middle of the lake. >> a lot of spots where you visit on you do see those changes and you are just like -- it's drastic. >> it is. >> maybe help this winter, until then it's going to be dry. at least our temperatures aren't hot now. as we look farther down the line it may get unbearable heading into next week.

so you just want to enjoy this now. as we take a look at the seven-day forecast it's coming up on the bottom of the screen now. look at toward the end of the forecast. do you see that, peninsula? yeah, we could be in the low to mid 90s next week. today the coolest day we will have and you head out now it's in the 50s and 60s with a high in san francisco reaching 64 degrees, east bay 73 degrees, and south bay today reaching 79 degrees. we do have a lot of fog on the bay, low visibility in some spots especially along the coast. elsewhere you see those low clouds. just like yesterday i don't think there will be much clearing in san francisco and that keeps those temperatures only reaching into the mid 60s and also for the north bay it starts to roll back in this evening. we have a cool pull of air that will start to retreat back to the north into the next couple of days. it will be a little bit warmer this weekend but still nice and comfortable so a great weekend to head outdoors and enjoy one of these events that's happening

across the bay area like at the berkeley marina and we will have temperatures in the low to mid 70s and a lot of sun. this weekend highs reaching in the 70s and 80s and around 70 degrees if this san francisco, tri-valley 85 degrees and the north bay also in the mid 80s. south bay expect highs reaching 80 -- about 80 degrees and also in the peninsula. let's check traffic now with mike. no real problems for the roadways. the rails, bart, still recovering from earlier delays, about 5 to maybe 10 minute delay out of the west oakland station. we have the system running now back on schedule. the bay bridge toll plaza the metering lights are on, we will talk about that. but an overall look, you see the tri-valley build as well as the south bay. 101 northbound we have a camera there where we do see that slowing, first burst just before 6:00. we will now show you that bay bridge toll plaza. the other congestion spot. those fast track lanes are still moving. an easy drive down the east shore freeway.

back to you. a follow-up now on a strange death in southern california that led police to a massive stash of guns and a.m. mow. police found a man's body in a grocery store parking lot two weeks after he died. it turns out that man was engaged to the woman who ow5@f the condo where all of those guns and ammunition were found. police discovered more than 1,200 guns and two tons of ammunition. lapd is investigating the man's death but so far it has not been ruled a homicide. collateral damage from the lion hysteria now sweeping milwaukee, someone mistakenly shot a dog. images showing what appear to be a lion or some other big cat moving up a suburban milwaukee street. animal control officers say yesterday someone shot a pit bull about two miles from that reported lion sighting, apparently in a fit of panic and likely contusion. fortunate the bullet struck the dog in the paw but it is expected to make a full
