to the hospital. >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning and thanks for joining us on this thursday. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. we continue to follow breaking news from napa. a terrifying situation for firefighters and for homeowners as fierce flames inch closer to communities tucked into the hills near lake berryessa. here is what we know so far. 6,000 acres have burned, that's been swrup graded from 5,000 in the last couple of hours. the flames still only 5% contained. 200 homes are threatened. >> we do have team coverage of this this escalating situation, meteorologist kari hall has the wind conditions in the area that could affect the fire fight, but we begin with stephanie chuang who is live at the scene. >> reporter: there has been some especi around lake solano where there were flames overnight but now just smoke visible, there's ash

falling and the stench of the smoke still very happy here. you can see 128 at pleasant valley road the road is closed by california highway patrol, this allows the fire crews to get to where they need to get without any des traction. check out what firefighters have been dealing with since the fire began yesterday afternoon. flames fanned by erratic powerful winds have been difficult with rugged steep terrain, few roads which was constricted access and because of the drought grass and brush much trier than it would be usually about. it has evacuations for the kwals canyon and golden bear area. thankfully no injuries. firefighters say their jobs made easier thanks to people evacuating right away, people like phil peck who has been helplessly watching the flames creep toward his home. >> i mean, there's nothing we can do. it looks like they're probably going to start here, start prepping to hopefully save the

homes. >> reporter: so what sparked this wildfire? we have obtained video showing a car crash near lake berryessa on highway 128. that firefighters say that likely started the wragg fire. overnight firefighters this to ground air support, there had been six air tankers and four helicopters in the air at the height of the fire fight yesterday. cal tire telling me after 8:00 this morning they will likely send those.choppers back up. they rely heavily on them because they are more precise than those air tankers and will give a better visual of the fire. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." let's take a look at those massive flames again. qv'ds were an issue. you can see it even if you are not a fire expert. but will they cooperate today? let's turn things over to pc who is tracking the latest weather conditions if the area. kari, firefighters getting any help from mother nature? >> today they are and not this weekend and definitely not next week. winds are nice and light this morning at 5 miles an hour.

>> humidity at 90%. into the next couple of days conditions will go well town hill. today we have humidity decreasing as we go into the daytime, down to about 35%, but this weekend temperatures climbing into the 80s, humidity staying low and look at what we're expecting heading into next week. we know that with a wildfire this large it may take several days to get that under control. next week we could be hitting some triple digits in that area. i will let you know what the rest of the bay area can expect, it's coming up in a few minutes. we will continue to follow it this breaking story all morning long with mother live update coming up in about 40 minutes. if you like the latest information sent directly to your phone just download our nbc bay area app. we are are also on facebook and twitter. a developing story in the east bay where deputies are trying to track down the person who attacked a 7-eleven employee

with a pocket knife overnight. this happened just before 1:30 this morning on pacheco boulevard. the contra costa sheriff's department reports that the clerk was screening outside the store when he got into an argument with the homeless man. deputies say the man pulled a knife stabbing the clerk at least once. that clerk is expected to survive. a chp officer is recovering from a head injury after his cruiser was rear-ended while he was investigating a separate crash. this happened last night just before 8:00 on westbound highway 580 near marina bay parkway in richmond. the officer was on the scene of a crash when his patrol car was hit by another vehicle from behind. the chp shut down both directions of the freeway so they could land a medical helicopter and fly the officer to the hospital. we don't know his condition, but we do know that he is stable. and flowers, candles, even a miniature superhero all part of a growing p memorial for hayward sergeant killed in the line of

duty. the department and people in the community are remembering and honoring sergeant scott lunger who was 15-year veteran of the force. >> bob redell joins us live from the police department this morning. the emotions still very raw for so many people. >> reporter: the hayward police department says that what happened 24 hours ago they are calling that a dark and devastating day in the department's history. as one of their own, is sergeant scott lunger will become the fifth person who have his name engraved on that stone plaque posted outside police headquarters, it is a plaque that honors the officers who have died in the line of duty. police work is a dangerous job and there's nothing routine about the routine as we all learned yesterday morning when sergeant lunger and his part officer pulled over a man who was driving erratically as sergeant lunger walked up to that car the driver without warning fired at him. his partner, sergeant lunger's partner, returned fire, later

police arrested the alleged shooter mark astrada, a 21-year-old man from oakland. he was pound at a hospital where he was being treated for a bullet wound. sergeant lunger was taken to eden medical center where he later tied. >> he was a great leader here in our organization. he inspired people every day, an incredible friend, a great father. >> reporter: about 100 people including hayward fire and chp honored sergeant lunger at a vigil yesterday outside hayward city hall. he was 48 years old, a father of two daughters, was a training supervisor who had served in the department's s.w.a.t. and gang units. the hayward police department and sergeant lunger's family are working on plans for a funeral. they hope to make an announcement by saturday. reporting live here outside hayward police headquarters, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> several hours after the shooting the intense manhunt ended also at a hospital.

21-year-old mark astrada showed up to san leandro hospital but then was transported to highland hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound. hayward police say they have not yet found any prior arrests nor warrants for astrada. they say he does have gang ties but is not officially in a gang. astrada worked with his father at a hayward roofing an construction business. his neighbors in oakland tell us they're shocked to hear what happened because astrada did come from a good family. we hear so much about sergeant lunger being involved in the community. his deatö2 hitting one high school softball team especially hard. lunger was a he assistant coach at oakley's freedom high school. a few of the players and the rest of the coaches have set up their own memorial on the school's field. >> it's tough. i mean, he was -- he wasn't just a coach. he was family. >> he was just a funny guy and just relacked, but wanted to get stuff done.

>> sergeant lunger spent five years coaching at freedom high. another live look at the growing memorial outside of the hayward police department. if you would like to learn more about sergeant lunger's life and legacy as a member of the department you can visit our website nbcbayarea.com. a woman held prisoner in richmond as a sex slave for more than a year is now free and her alleged captor is behind bars. authorities say it all started with a simple facebook message. police say al oflt jio sanchez met the victim through the social media site and convinced her to travel from nicaragua to his bay area apartment about a year ago promising her a better life. instead police say she was kidnapped, is sexually abused and to rsed to live in a closet. richmond detectives say they received a tip from homeland security agents leading them to the woman. >> it appears that this was not the first call for help from the victim, but this was the first time we were able to rescue the

victim. >> authorities say they contacted the victim via cell phone, then they swarmed the house and arrested sanchez and discovered the frightened woman inside. the man accused of a grizzly crime, killing five people in a modesto home is no longer in john kasich jail. overnight martin martinez was transferred toh stanislaus couy jail. he is facing charges in the murders of his girlfriend, mother and three children. the five victims were found dead last weekend. one san jose state football player is in the opt and another is suspended after a fight in a dorm. this happened tuesday night inside joe west hall an on campus dorm. university police a chad hiller a red shirt freshman is the player who is in the hospital. the school officials aren't identifying the other player involved just yet. the fight comes days after another player was kicked off the spartan team after officers

arrested him for battery. vice president joe biden heading back to the bay area today. he is going to be visiting a newark company developing a portable blood testing kit. afterward mr. biden is joining a round table discussion on innovations in the field of preventive healthcare. his last visit was back in april when he toured pg&e in oakland. he also stopped by a local sandwich shop. >> we had video of him wearing sunglasses as he was ordering up. he might not need those today, right, kari? >> especially in san francisco. we've seen the low clouds the past couple of days and very little sunshine. we also see that for the south bay as we get a view from mt. hamilton, we see them settling in, those low clouds this morning that will gradually clear for the south bay. now the temperatures at 59 degrees in san jose and sunnyvale, concord 61 degrees and napa though at 59 degrees. a cool tart and cool afternoon, especially when you consider our

highs in some spots are well cooler than where we should be for this time of year. gilroy 80 degrees, pacifica 60 degrees, embarcadero 64 degrees only a little bit of sun peaking out. calistoga 80 degrees, san ramone 76 degrees. this weekend begins the warming trend and tomorrow could be -- or not tomorrow, next week could be a sizzler. i will have more on that coming up in the full microclimate forecast. i don't mind you put off the sizzler until next weekend. totally fine. over the bay bridge toll plaza a lot of folks going over here toward the city. no surprises. look at those low clouds just hovering around. oakland a little gray but to problem as far as those speeds i did mark what's going on later today, 12:35 game, expect midday slowing. right now nothing to speak of for the east bay or north bay. here is the peninsula and the south bay with a smooth flow of traffic. town at the bottom of the screen

after problem at the buildingful. from broken pumps and major leaks to bacteria found if the water pipes. most recently county workers found a scattered window on the east face of the building. officials say that was not an act of vandalism. now the question is how did it happen instead. we spoke with county supervisor who says that if the issue is a structural one he would be very concerned saying, quote, this building when constructed was celebrated as a best in its class. if there are defects we will get to the bottom of it. hundreds of scientists have signed a letter now demanding medicines cost so much money. >> scott mcgrew we're talking about thousands of dollars a dose in in difference. >> some of them add just weeks or a few months to a person's life, kris. while we want our loved ones to live as long as possible doctors and a patients are having to is ask the tough question how much is a week or a month worth? $10,000?

$50,000? more than 100 oncologists, cancer doctors from some of the nation's best cancer centers will publish a letter today in the mayo clinic's official medical journal. they will protest the high cost of cancer drugs. they will call for medicaid to buy those drugs on the canadian markets where they are cheaper. now, pharmaceutical companies say for their part the high cost in america of drugs is due to research and development. for every drug that works, they discover hundreds that don't. but the doctors point out the price of cancer drugs have risen in the united states by as much as tenfold in the last 15 years. and not just cancer drugs. bay area company gilead sciences have come under fire for its help c drug. harvoni $1,350 a pill. shares hit all time highs earlier this summer.

other news hpceo me go whitman will join chris christie's team. she will still run hewlett-packard. she was on the romney team last time. christie supported her when she ran for governor of california. by supporting christie we can say she is not supporting carly fiorina. they have a lot in common. not just that they are women they both ran hewlett-packard. >> its a similarity about but that doesn't mean they have that much in common. >> maybe not necessarily. chris christie is a huge fan of me go whitman. he will see if he can generate anything out of this. hard to imagine in this drought, but the major road leading into yosemite is off limits because of a mud slide. this is on highway 140 in el portal. heavy rains tuesday night brought town large boulders and debris just sitting in the

middle of the roadway. several drivers were stranded. nobody was hurt. that slide happened in an area where a large wildfire burned last summer. it's still unclear when highway 140 is going to reopen. hopefully it will be more than a drop in the bucket. south bay water customers this afternoon will get a better idea if they are hitting the water conservation targets they were supposed to. santa clara county water district will announce the latest water reduction numbers covering the month of june. the goal is to reduce water use by 30% for the year. right now the district says it's running slightly behind target. some startling new images that show just how dire the drought is. on the left-hand side of your screen pictures taken four years ago of fulsome lake on the top, lake orville on the bottom. on the right-hand part of your screen, pictures taken just in the last month or so. you can see the drastic difference, fulsome lake you could have launched a boat four years ago, this time you wouldn't be able to get the boat

across the lake. >> lake orville is almost worse. it's almost gone. just dramatic images. >> look how far below the bridge. time to check your microclimate forecast. as we give you a live look outside, downtown san jose. a little bit of a cloud out there. we're going to be checking our temperatures. >> the humidity is feeling a little higher today i would say. >> at least to start the day then later on this afternoon it gets a lot more comfortable. also cool. a lot of face i'm tracking from tropical systems to the wildfire and then some sizzling temperatures next week. so enjoy today while it's all nice and quiet as we get a look at the seven-day forecast it's now popping up at the bottom to of the screen, look at that temperature trend. as we get a live look in from san francisco, over toward alcatraz, you see the low clouds this morning that will be there all throughout the day. now the temperature at about 60 degrees in san francisco, today's forecast only brings it up to 64 degrees with a little

sun peaking through east bay 70 degrees, peninsula 77 degrees. we have a cool of pool air that's settling in across the bay area. unfortunately this does not last long, it starts to lift farther to the north and this weekend we begin the warming trend. as we go into next week, high pressure builds and by the start of the week and the latter part of the weekend into the start of the week we will have 60s along the coast, 70s for inland areas, but then by wednesday look at what happens. some of that heat from the central valley starts to creep into the tri-valley and we could have temperatures as hot as over 100 degrees, 90s for the north and south bay and once again this is next week. so our cool temperatures do continue at least for now. we are also looking at the knew tropical depression and it looks like this is going to find of fizzle out. if it does develop it may become tropical storm felicia. into the weekend it's nice, quiet, also still very comfortable by. by the end of the weekend

temperatures going up a couple degrees for the tri-valley and for the spout bay a high of 80 degrees, in san francisco expect a high toward the end of the weekend around 70 degrees. i will have another look at the microclimate forecast coming up. let's get a look at how the roads are flowing. traffic flows pretty well. san jose we have a little bit of a break, this should start to build again. the volume oversale for the south bay, 101 and 680, a slow down as that build continues gradually for the morning commute. 87, 280 and 85 by the end of the show you will see slowly as well. an incident reported for ha krflt iend -- the san mateo bri getting across the east bay to the peninsula a smooth drive just building with the amount of company you have, no surprises, guys. back to you. new this morning, bay area roads are in the spotlight and it's not for a good reason.

a new report out today shows six bay area cities ranking among the worst in the country when it comes to road conditions. those cities include san francisco, oakland, san jose. antioch and concord also made the list. this comes as a key federal program that provides funding for road repairs is set to expire at the end of the month. >> i think i hit every pothole in my neighborhood. still ahead, new developments on a mountain lion scare on the streets of milwaukee. the unintended consequences for a poor pooch.

>> announcer: you're watching "today in the bay." the deaths of two young boys are leading to a new warning about a popular dresser sold at ikea. ikea says the two boys were killed in separate incidents when a tresser tipped over falling on top of them. ikea is offering a tree kit to help people anchor those dressers to the wall. this comes as the furniture company faces a lawsuit filed by the family of one of the boys who were killed. the threat of west nile virus appears to be picking up speed in northern california. according to the press democrat health officials are reporting mend seen know county's first human case of the year. this follows word on monday from a west nile victim died. they aren't sure how the patient contracted west nile.

it height have happened out of state. a big announcement from nasa and already has a lot of people talking. the agency is expected to reveal a discovery from the kepler space telescope. right now it's being used to search for earth like planets and some are hoping that nasa has found one and that it has plenty of oxygen. the kepler space telescope first launched in 2009. where is this lion? collateral damage from the lion hysteria is now sweeping milwaukee. someone mistakenly shot a dog getting confused. you may have seen the cell phone video. images showing what might have been a big cat shrinking its way up a milwaukee street. animal control officers say someone shot a pit bull two miles away from the reported lion sighting apparently in a fit of panic. fortunately that bullet struck the dog in its paw and he is expected to make a full recovery. so far no lion has been found. 6:26.

funeral arrangements have yet to be i announced for sergeant scott lunger who died yesterday morning when he was shot during a traffic stop. the suspect 21-year-old mark cast strad da is in the hospital. vice president joe biden returns to the bay area today. he will visit a company focused on blood testing technology. he will also attend a healthcare related round table. lawmakers in washington, d.c. hear again from the father of the woman shot and killed on pier 14 in san francisco. jim steinle is pushing for tougher punishments for undocumented immigrants who are deported and then come back to the u.s. the man accused of killing steinle's daughter had been deported several times. "today in the bay" tracie potts joins us live from washington, d.c. this this hearing could directly inn packet cities like san francisco because of their sanctuary city policies is that. >> reporter: it most certainly could. what some here on capitol hill are pushing for, sam, is to penalize cities like san francisco when they have policies that do not notify the feds when someone who pay be in

dp deportation or in the process is being released. it would take federal money away from cities like san francisco and about 200 around the country that are these so-called sanctuary cities. that house hear, it's the judiciary committee, is starting in 30 minutes from now. jim steinle is testifying again. we got a sneak peek at his testimony this morning. he calls it unbelievable and is pushing for legislation to prevent this type of thing from happening. the sacramento sheriff is going to be here talking about the fact that there's not a connection that locals like sacramento county sheriff's department need to have access to immigration and customs database so it they know what's going on with some of these. the senate is working on a completely separate bill that they may be taking votes on as well. they had a hearing last tuesday. back to you. it certainly was emotional last time. we will have to wait and see what he has to say today, three

week since his daughter was killed. donald trump's plans to speak at the texas/mexico border may not pan out as expected. the union that originally invited him is saying we're backing out. despite the changemzñ of plans trump still plans to show up in laredo, texas, today and he is supposed to hold a news conference and then speak with peace officers. this comes after trump's comments on immigration set off a firestorm of criticism. now republican opponents including one who he personalel alley offended are firing back. >> let no one be mistaken. donald trump's candidacy is a cancer on conservatism and it must be clearly diagnosed, excised and discarded. as republicans continue to dual it out, hillary clinton gearing up to give a speech of her own. hers on the economy. she will do that tomorrow and then will head to iowa for the weekend. new this morning u.s. defense secretary ashton carter is in baghdad today on a

surprise visit. he has been during the middle east this week, meeting with leaders in israel, saudi arabia and jordan. carter is going to assess the iraqi government's progress in stopping secotarian violence. this marks carter's first visit to iraq since he took office in february. an update now to our breaking news in the north bay, we continue to pole these fast moving flames burning near lake berryessa. the fire is only 5% contained. 200 homes are in the path of the fire. firefighters are facing an uphill battle because of rugged terrain and high winds as well. and the situation has gotten a little worse since last night, but maybe the weather will help out now. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. >> and good morning. we can see from the video here, this was shot yesterday from our chopper, you could see just how widespread these flames are. as we go into the day weather conditions will become still favorable, but downhill as we go

into the weekend. this was a viewer picture sent in from vacaville and you kwo see the smoke billowing in the air. you can probably still see it today. if you can safely take a picture, be sure to send to t. it to us, we want to see what's going on where you live. today the winds will start to pick up, up to 30 miles an hour. we start out this morning with humidity at 80%, but it goes down as we go through the day. temperatures not too bad now, but this weekend they will be warming up into the mid to upper 80s and then climbing to 100 degrees next week. we know with a wildfire that large, up to 6,000 acres now, it takes quite a while to get that under control. so we may be dealing with it this for a while. weather conditions will become very less favorable as we go into the next several face. we will keep you up-to-date on that and i will have a look at what the rest of the bay area can expect, that's coming up in a few minutes. we will take a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza where that's the biggest backup of the

day. you would expect that of course the metering lights are on. no drama here. we like to see the maps as well with a smooth drive on approach. a look over towards the san francisco as well. 101 at the split with interstate mo city without any delay. the backup on the bay bridge on the right side. to problem for the is it i acrosses the golden gate bridge or down the peninsula, a slower drive developing for 92 off 880 and north 101 at embarcadero we do have a crash reported. no details on any lanes being blocked. we don't see any slowing on the speed sensors, either. we want to track that because that's north of that lane shift and the potential for more traffic flow right about now. it is 6:36 right now. still ahead, a burglar spends three nights hidden under a homeowner's bed. >> that freaky story, plus a bay area couple beaten with baseball bats in their sleep. what police are doing right now

custody -- in connection with the deaths of five of their family members in oklahoma. teenagers are in police custody in connection with the deaths of five of their own family member[ in oklahoma. police detained the teens aged 16 and 18 near the scene in the tulsa suburb of broken arrow. police say they found five people stabbed to death in a home, including a child. there was also a critically

injured child at the home and another child who was unharmed. >> all of the victims and suspects are part of the same family and lived together at that it a vish and targeted attack. a couple brutally beaten with a baseball bat. police say they are reviewing surveillance video to try and identify the three suspects who broke into a home on dill court and attacked john and ann russo while they were leaving. ann russo suffered a broken arm and head injuries the. her husband remains in critical condition. nothing was stolen from the house. >> one thing i'm fairly confident in saying is that it was not a random act of violence. these people were targeted. we are just not sure what the motive is at this time. >> present wood police are asking minute who knows anything suspicious to please come forward. alameda police are stepping up overnight patrols after a

spring of burglaries in in that community. the crimes are happening sometime between midnight and 7:00 in the morning. spl police are temporarily increasing staffing during those hours. right now police are not saying how many burglaries they are investigating more exactly where they happened, but they are advises are residents to make sure all windows and doors are locked. usually you think in the middle of a break in you would hide under the bed. a chilling story out of new jersey. police say a burglar stuck into a home and hid under the bed for three face. theft of services, police say had you been barred used an electrical outlet under the bed to charge his cellphone while he was camping out there. he allegedly snuck into the home while the homeowner was taking out the crash. he hid under a bed in a spare room being unnoticed until the homeowner heard a strange news

traffic on "today in the bay." let's go back to that breaking news. a terrifying situation for firefighters and homeowners as fierce flames inch closer and closer to communities tucked into the hills near lake berryessa. here is what we know so far. as of two minutes ago 6,000 acres are burned, the flames only 5% contained. 200 moments are threatened and several communities are evacuated. >> we have team coverage of this escalating situation. meteorologist kari hall has the wind conditions in the area, but we tart right now with "today in the bay" stephanie chuang who is live near the fire line. steph, have they made any progress this morning? is it. >> reporter: there has been overnight and that's the good news here. by lake solano there were flames visible overnight but not anymore, now just some smoke and some ash in the air. some charred land. here at highway 128 at pleasant valley road it's closed to

traffic. you can see chp standing there along with the tractors. these are the type of equipment necessary and used in this this fire fight. this is near where cal fire has set up its command post. it went from 25 acres yesterday 2:00 in the afternoon to 1,000 acres 7:30 last night to 6,000 acres. it has forced mandatory evacuations for 200 homes in the area along with nearby campgrounds. firefighters will likely be out here for days. so far no injuries, just one house damaged and one shed or barn destroyed, but firefighters credit responsible homeowners for keeping those numbers low. >> taking care of defensible space does pay. the fire did approach a number of the structures and the defensible space ept can the fire out of those houses. >> reporter: we've obtained video showing a car crash believed to have sparked this

fire. by the way, you can't really see it, but there's horses and cows and the flames got pretty close and the good news is no injuries to people nor so animals. cal fire will be sending choppers up after 8:00 this morning. we will get better updates from the bird's-eye view at that point. live here west of winters, stephanie chuang, be "today in the bay." let's take a loong at those massive tlams. the winds were a huge issue yesterday. they died down overnight but the question now is will they ramp up again today? >> let's turn things over right now to meteorologist kari hall who is tracking the latest weather conditions in the area. >> and the temperature is nice and cool at 54 degrees, humidity at 89%. not much of a wind gust right though but the winds will start to pick up as we go through the day. winds gusting up to 30 miles an hour. we start out the morning with the humidity at 80% but during the daytime when the clouds

clear out the humidity drops down to 35% and temperatures once again -- it's still comfortable today but this weekend it starts to climb into the mid to upper 80s through the weekend and next week -- it takes quite a while for crews to get a fire of this size under control and we could still be seeing this being an issue into next week with temperatures climbing to 100 degrees they can week. i will keep you up to date on that. now as you head out across the rest of the bay area it's around 60 degrees. we start out with the typical low clouds, 73 degrees will be the high in the east bay peninsula, 79 degrees in the tri-valley. highs will only reach into the lower 80s but you see the low clouds and the fog there to start out the day as we could see that camera from sunol. also in the north bay skies clearing, becoming sunny and 80 degrees, only 64 degrees in san francisco. so is we had this cool of -- pool of cool air across the bay

hayward sergeant gunned down in the line of duty. the department and people this this that community are remembering and honoring sergeant scott lunger, a 15-year veteran of the force. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the hayward police department this morning. bob, the emotions still very rough for so many people an always prizing people who didn't know the officer personally show up to show their support. >> reporter: we've seen a few of those people this morning leaving flowers outside hayward police headquarters. hayward police chief diane urban says sergeant scott lunger was an inspiration and a great leader in this department, an incredible friend and father. as you can see by the large amount of flowers left here, he is being missed tremendously. yesterday morning sergeant lunger and his partner pulled over a person who was driving erratically through a nearby neighborhood. as the sergeant approached that car the driver shot him without warning. sergeant lunger's partner returned fire. the alleged shooter haas a

21-year-old man from oakland was arrested later at a hospital where he is till being treated for a bullet point. yesterday more than 100 people gathered to honor sergeant lunger. hayward firefighters and california highway patrol officers lined the perimeter to pay their respects. other citizens of this city remember the sergeant because of this his work in this community. >> you see somebody you know and recognize who was shot on the line of duty, i mean, it's terrible. i can't believe it even happened. >> reporter: sergeant lunger was 48 years old. the father of two daughters. he was a training supervisor who had served in the department's s.w.a.t. and gang units. the hayward police department and sergeant lunger's family are working on plans for a funeral. they hope to make an announcement by saturday. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." several hours after the shooting the intense manhunt ended at the hospital.

21-year-old mark astrada showed up at a san leandro hospital but was taken to highland hospital where he was treated for that gun shot wound. hayward police have not found any prior arrests for warrants for astrada, police say he can does have gang ties but isn't in a gang. he wo$#táñ with his father at a hayward roofing an construction business. this his neighbors tell us that they are shocked to hear what happened because astrada comes from a good family. hayward police say they found gun and ammunition at the site where sergeant lunger was shot. new this morning, a chp officer is also recovering from a head injury after his cruiser was rear-ended while he was investigating a separate crash. this happened just before 8:00 on westbound highway 580 near marina bay parkway in richmond. the officer was on scene of a crash there when his patrol car was smashed by another vehicle were behind. the chp this to shut down both directions of the freeway so

season. we have heard from caterpillar, mcdonald's, comcast, gm all prepped their numbers for this afternoon. markets hit by apple on wednesday, apple made a ton of money but not as much as investors hoped. the apple trades on the knack dak but measured on the dow. lyft behind a deal with starbucks allowing you to earn starbucks points when you get a ride from lyft or you can use some of those points to tip the lyft driver. starbucks is such a major company and it's partnering with lyft not uber. lyft needed a corporate friend. the ceo of starbucks said we have respect for uber but we want to make these decisions based on the long-term and based on business practices. that's a little bit of tweak at uber. they have gotten in trouble in the past over some of its behavior. >> i think thea kind of like a jab. >> thank you very much. an update on our breaking
