7:02 am
>> officials here have long signaled the terrorist group isis, also known as isil, poses a danger to the u.s., but the fbi director was asked if the group is now a bigger threat to the u.s. than al qaeda. his answer, yes. underscoring the level of concern here. >> isil is not your parents' al qaeda. it's a very different model. and by virtue of that model, currently the threat we're worrying in the homeland most of all. >> that's james comey telling an adyunls that isis has become a bigger threat to the united states than al qaeda. their radicalization efforts have been especially effective, reaching thousands of americans through social media. urging followers who can't travel to the middle east to kill where you are. >> they have adopted a model of social media to crowdsource terrorism. >> u.s. officials have arrested a significant number of
7:03 am
radicalized americans in the last eight weeks. they include some of those who were planning attacks in the july 4th holiday. critics have accused the administration of underplaying the threat in the past, as reese ptdly as last september, senior intelligence officials were downplaying the group's capacity to attack the u.s., but earlier this month, president obama held a press conference on the growing isis threat. >> this will not be quick. it is a long-term campaign. isil is opportunistic and it is nimble. >> comey's remarks highlight the deepering concern among u.s. officials about isis' efforts to inspire violence in the united states. >> what keeps me up at night is the isil threat in the homeland. and i worry very much about what i can't see. >> now, comey also said in addition to tracking people who have been radicalized within the united states, officials have also tracked dozens of americans ranging in age from 18 to 62 who have traveled overseas to fight with isis.
7:04 am
all this as the u.s. continues its air campaign to defeat the terrorist group at its source in iraq and syria. savannah, back to you. >> all right, kristen welker, thank you very much. let's bring in clint van zandt. good morning to you. even as we learn more and more about isis, clear isis has bekm become ascendant and more and more influence. all along, officials would say it's not really as much a threat to the u.s. homeland. they do more damage overseas. this is a real change to say that isis has now eclimsed al qaeda in terms of the threat to this country. >> yeah, two things going on. number one, the u.s. military, now, they have been doing a wonderful job overseas of eliminated the al qaeda threat. number two, isis is continuing to improve its social media recruitment. right now, there are 21,000 known individuals that are
7:05 am
watching isis type of social media on the internet. when the fbi director says it's what you can't see, it's at least 21,000 people who do see, and what they see are isis recruitment, and realize what isis is doing, many times, is playing to the lowest denominator in the united states. they're looking for somebody who is very troubled. they're looking for somebody who wants a purpose in life. who uses drugs, and who is vulnerable to social radicalization. that's the type of person that isis is targeting. >> al qaeda all along has always wanted to repeat that grand spectacular mass casualty attack along the lines of 9/11, where isis seems satisfied to inspire one person hero there, take whatever weapon you can get, do as much damage as you can. is that why they're more frightening right now, because they can attack any soft target in any number? >> as far as isis is concerned,
7:06 am
now, savannah, you can recruit these individuals. it takes no training whatsoever. you don't have to provide funds for them. we witnessed that perhaps in chattanooga, as we're learning about the level of radicalization that that individual had to kill five of our service people. so it's a no-cost brainer for isis to just put out propaganda and say you in america, we can give you a reason to hate. now, pick up a gun and go out and kill somebody. so when they see the level of media coverage that they're able to get from, in that case, killing five of our servicemen, they say why should we invest more when we can get our puppets in america who are following this rhetoric to do it and itdizant cost us anything other than the production of a video? >> the fbi director said he's crowd sourcing terror. clint, thank you as always. let's turn to politics and donald trump heads to the center of the storm today.
